"That doesn't sound right, though."

"I think she was trying to say 'wed her'."

Luci gives me a skeptical look, her brain gears working overtime.

"I guess that would make sense. There's no harm in trying it."

"But it has to be out of love. Not desperate need or anything else. Love."

She wraps her arms and leans in.

"Thankfully, I deeply in love with you."

"And I am hopelessly in love with you."

She plants a kiss on my lips, smiling.

"How are we going to do this?"

"I have some friends down at the court house. We can get a justice of the peace to do it."

"Of course you have friends in high places. You're a doctor."

"I won't take any offense to that. I treated Judge Matthews' son after he was in a bad car accident. Because of me, the kid lived and got to keep his arm, though it was almost completely severed."

"Wow."

"Yeah. So I'll get on the phone, hopefully they can fit us in this weekend."

I kiss her forehead before turning a bit.

"Wait!"

I look back at her.

"Are you just doing this to save me because you feel sympathy towards me and my situation?"

I fold Luci in my arms, stroking her hair.

"I'm not doing this because I feel sympathy towards you. I'm doing this because, in the time we've spent together, I've fallen for you. Hard. I'm hopelessly in love with you, Lucifer. That's why I'm helping you, that's why I'm going to marry you."

I pull the small box from my back pocket.

"That's why I woke up at the crack of dawn and got you this, to make our marriage official."

She doesn't even give me the chance to get down on one knee. She throws her arms around me. I manage to slide the ring on her finger, officially making her my fiancé.
