《Protect Her》Epilogue

"Another round?" Cole asked, slapping my back.
"Nah, I think I'm going to head home." I said, standing up and throwing a few bills down on the table. I'd meet him after work for a quick drink, but I was ready to get out of here now. "Riley is with Cam's dad camping this week, and I've got a lot of plans for Cam, if you know what I mean."
Cole rolled his eyes, chuckling. "TMI little bro."
I smirked. "I'll call you tomorrow. Maybe we can take the boat out and fish for a while."
"Sounds good. Tell the Mrs. hello." He waved.
She wasn't officially the Mrs, but I finally got a ring on her finger and a promise that someday she'd be ready. I was content with that. I knew Cam was mine forever, and I had no doubts about our relationship, but I also understood her hesitation to get married. Her only experience with it had gone up in smoke, and although this would be different, I knew it was tough. I didn't need the official title, all I needed was her.
We were living in the Vancouver penthouse and spending our weekends at the mountain house. It was nice to be in the city since Cam and I both were working a little and we were close to Riley's school, but I think we all looked forward to our weekends away.
When we made the move, Cole and Kate, and the girls tagged along with us. My parents even spent half the year up here, and Cam's dad visited whenever he could. We were constantly surrounded by family, and while I loved it, sometimes I craved some time alone with my girls. Tonight was one of those times.
Cam wasn't expecting me so early. I told her I would be with Cole for a while, and I was excited to surprise her. I was quiet when I came through the front door and heard her back in our bedroom.
"Cam?" I called.
She didn't answer at first, so I headed that way.
The bathroom door was ajar, and the light was on. I pushed it open the rest of the way.
Cam was at the counter, holding onto it with both of her hands.

"Jesus, Derek." She jumped when I came in. "What are you doing here?" She swept her hands over the counter, knocking something off into the drawer. "I wasn't expecting you until later. What happened to Cole?"
She was definitely up to something, and I wasn't going to let her off the hook. "I told him I had to be quick. I wanted to surprise you."
"Well, you did." She let out a sharp laugh before heading toward the door. "Come on, why don't we go get something to drink?"
"Not so fast." I grabbed her hand, turning her back around. "What were you doing in here?"
"Nothing!" she said defensively.
"Are you lying to me?" I smirked, putting my finger to her chin.
"Derek..." Her cheeks blushed.
I let go of her hand, opening the drawer. When I looked inside, my heart nearly stopped.
I pulled out a pregnancy test, and then another, and then another.
Positive. Positive. Positive.
My eyes widened as I turned to her. "Cam..."
"It's probably just a mistake. The doctor said the hormones they have me on could give me a false positive." She rambled, clearly shaken.
"Yeah, one positive." My voice was hoarse. "How many of these did you take?"
Cam blushed again, opening another drawer. She pulled out a handful. "I took eight." A smile tugged at her lips.
"Wow." I held onto the counter, steadying myself, suddenly realizing why she was doing that when I came in. "How do you feel?"
"Tired, and a little nauseous." She chewed the inside of her cheek. "But let's not get our hopes up, okay? It could easily be the hormones."
"Babe, I know. And if it is, then it's okay. We'll keep trying." I put my hand to her cheek. "What do we do now? Go get an ultrasound?"
She nodded. "I made an appointment for tomorrow."
"Okay." I pressed my lips to hers. "Then there is no use worrying about it tonight. Let's just forget it for tonight and go watch a movie."
Except there was no way I was going to forget about it. There was nothing in the world that would make me happier than having another little girl with Camryn. We'd spent the last few months seeing the very best of doctors, and Cam was on all kinds of medicine and had been through all kinds of procedures. She'd been through hell trying to make this happen. I'd told her at least a thousand times I didn't need it, but I think she wanted it just as badly. We agreed that we'd do whatever we could to try, but we'd both be okay if it never happened. Things between us and with Riley were beyond perfect. A baby would just make things better.

Cam and I tried our hardest to focus on other things as we had dinner and watched a movie, but it was weighing on us both heavily. I tossed and turned the entire night with the prospect of a real life little baby growing inside of Cam.
We woke up and had a quick breakfast before heading to the appointment. Cam was an absolute mess of nerves and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't as well. She was shaking as she held my hand in the waiting room.
"Baby, whatever happens...'"
"I know." She cut me off, smiling gently. "I just want it to be true so bad." Her voice was hardly above a whisper. I brought her hand to my lips and gave it a kiss.
A few minutes later, we were called back.
"Alright, Ms. Sullivan." The doctor smiled. "Go ahead and lay back on the table and we'll get started."
I helped Cam up, and she leaned back. The doctor lifted her shirt up and spread a little of gel on her stomach. "Okay, this might feel a bit cold. We're just going to start up here and see... oh. Huh." She moved the wand across Cam's stomach as I tried to make sense of what I was seeing on the screen, but I couldn't tell what was what.
The doctor made a strange face, staring at the screen. I was prepared for the worst. Maybe she was seeing something other doctors hadn't. Something more damaged than we thought.
"Huh?" I asked, unable to take the anticipation any longer. "Is that a good huh or a bad, huh?"
"Well, I guess that depends..." A smile pulled at her lips. "Do you have room in your house for two babies?"
All the air left my lungs as I stared at the screen, trying to process what she'd just said.
Cam let out a sharp laugh. "What are you talking about?"
"Twins. Ms. Sullivan. You're pregnant with twins." She grinned.
"Here is baby a..." A small shape appeared on the screen and she paused over it. "And the heartbeat." A tiny bump-bump echoed through the room.
"And baby b."
My throat tightened with emotion. My eyes were glued to Cam, not even looking at the screen. I watched as happy tears welled up in her eyes, meeting our babies for the first time. Slowly, she turned to me, a smile as big as I'd ever seen on her face.
"I'm pregnant." She whispered. "We're going to have a baby."
"Two babies." I laughed, correcting her.
"Two babies." She repeated.
I wrapped my arms around her neck, holding her tightly against me as we both cried tears of happiness. This moment was such a long time coming, and nobody deserved this kind of happiness as much as Camryn. She'd been through so much, and come out on top, and now I was finally able to give her everything she wanted. We'd been happy, but these babies would be the pieces of a puzzle we didn't even know we were missing.
I could already imagine Riley as a big sister. The way she'd help and fawn over her new little siblings. How she'd dress them up and play games with them and teach them all kinds of things. I pictured her reading them stories and all three of them running with Champ in the backyard. I imagined the late nights up with Cam as we aced the hallways trying to get them to sleep. Holding her hadn't as she brought them into this world. The playdates, the music classes, the first days of school, the field trips and recitals. The sports games and movie nights and all the things we'd experience together as a family.
It was hard to even put what I was feeling into words. My life had done a complete 180 turn in the last several months, but somehow I had ended up exactly where I was supposed to be.
