Shit, my alarm. How is it already 5am? I turn it off, rolling onto my back and staring up at the ceiling. I was excited, I really was. But fuck me I was tired.
I throw back the duvet, pulling myself into a seated position before standing. I grab my phone and text Will, James, Ethan and Simon to make sure they are all awake before brushing my teeth and getting dressed. I slip down the hall and put my hairbrush and tooth brush in my case, before putting the kettle on and going to wake Alex and George. I decided to leave Harry till last.
'George' I whisper as I open his door. 'Come on, we gotta leave in half hour. Kettle is on.'
'Mmmhhh' he groans in response, throwing his duvet back and sitting up. 'It's too early' he moans.
I walk a little further down the hall and knock on Alex's door. 'Alex, time to get up' I whisper. As I open the door I see he is already sat on the bed dressed and ready to go. 'Jesus, you are already up!'
'Yeah, too excited' he giggles and he stands and walks towards his bathroom.
Finally I go to the living room where Harry is sound asleep. 'Harry, come on buddy you gotta get up. We gotta go soon. Kettle is on.'
'Jess. Do I have to' he whispers, pulling the blanket up over his head. 'It's too early.'
'I know it is, but just think of all the alcohol waiting for us in Spain' I giggle, tugging his blanket back down. 'Come on, I will make you a coffee.'
I go into the kitchen and pull out four mugs, making coffee's for us all. I find some croissants in the cupboard and bung them on the breakfast bar with the drinks. After about ten minutes all four of us are sat eating and drinking, the lads beginning to wake up a little.

'Uber is here guys, time to go' I call as I head towards the door to grab my suitcase. We all head out, locking the door behind us and piling into the elevator. It was holiday time.

We met the other lads at the airport, and after just a few short hours we touched down in sunny Spain. Once we had all collected our luggage, we piled into the minibus I had booked and were soon stood outside the magnificent Villa. It was even better than it looked in the pictures.
'So, there are 5 bedrooms, most of them are twin doubles. Some of us will have to share' I finally announce as we pile in through the massive doorway.
'I can share with George' Alex says looking at George for confirmation.
'Yeah that's cool with me' he replies.
'I don't mind sharing with someone?' Will pipes up.
'Yeah I will share with Will' James adds.
'I don't mind sharing' I say as we dump our suitcases in the hall and begin to explore. The Villa is incredible, better than anything I have ever stayed in before. Alex and George and Will and James head off to choose their rooms and dump their bags whilst everyone continues to explore.
'I don't mind sharing with you Jess, you did after all arrange this amazing holiday' Harry says quiet enough for the others not to hear.
'Go on then. Lets go choose our room' I say as I head back to the hall to grab my suitcase.
We wander all the way to the top floor where there is just one bedroom, and it is of course unclaimed. It has a massive ensuite and a balcony, and Harry and I instantly claim it. We quickly unpack everything into the wardrobes, before I disappear into the bathroom to change into a bikini. I am not wasting time getting in the pool!
By the time I reemerge, Harry is changed into his shorts and ready to go.

Leftover Apocalypse
[Participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] This is a story about the newly-adult Calliope Smith having a terrible day that ends in her getting mysteriously teleported from Phoenix, Arizona to a fantasy world where her life is in constant danger. She considers this an upgrade. Someone evil is looking for her, and she doesn't know why. Someone who seems to know a lot about her has promised they'll help her, but she doesn't know who they are. All that matters to Callie is that magic is real and one way or another she's going to learn it. The end of the world is coming up, sure, but Callie won't need to worry about that. In fact, by the time she even finds out about it one of the doomsday devices will already be destroyed, and the authorities will be well on the way to dealing with the other one. It's fine. Everything will be smooth sailing. Almost certainly. Probably. Chapters are usually about 2500-3500 words, and the goal is to post 2-3 per week but I sometimes get busy or have some writers block. It's your standard portal fantasy / Isekai premise, but unlike some the main character's time on Earth and how she got pulled into another world will (eventually) be explored. Some slight GameLit-feeling stuff later, no menus or level-ups but there's something suspiciously like a skill tree when the magic system gets going. No number crunching, and while the main character will get to do some silly stuff she won't be a god like in some fics (and will in fact spend a lot of time being badly outclassed by her enemies). Some reader interaction, ranging from adding to the worldbuilding to occasionally making big important decisions about skill progression. Please note that the main character is flawed and impulsive, and will make some stupid decisions. That's part of the story, but I get that it's not for everyone. Trigger Warnings: Foster care system references, crappy parenting. Some mental health adjacent stuff, specifically the main character has some issues where she experiences varying levels of empathy and emotional vulnerability depending on the day (it's complicated and not meant to portray any real-world conditions). Occasional violence including mention of death and grievous bodily harm, but no detailed descriptions of gore.

The Girl from the Mountain
Alexandra Bedford is a weapon, a young woman with telekinetic powers capable of leveling entire cities, born to fight in the desolate remains of post-apocalyptic North America. There is only one problem: she may be losing control of her abilities. Sixteen years after a global pandemic devastated the earth’s population, the lines in the old United States have been drawn between the Cheyenne Directorate in Colorado and the New England Alliance on the East Coast. The Directorate, of which Alexandra is a part, is a small but powerful organization dedicated to returning the country to its former glory. However, when a diplomatic mission to the New England Alliance goes wrong, Alexandra finds herself at the center of a bloody civil war. Battles are fought on the old highways and in dilapidated towns and once-great cities. And as the conflict escalates, all of North America faces the threat of being burnt away by nuclear fire. Against this backdrop of war, Alexandra tries to uncover the long-hidden secrets behind the plague, her abilities, and the two men fighting to decide the fate of the United States - Henry Bedford, Alexandra's father and leader of the Directorate, and John Martin, the mysterious figure at the heart of the New England Alliance who may hold the key to everything she seeks. None of this will matter, however, unless Alexandra can prevent the power growing inside her from taking over and consuming the very world she is fighting to save. Author's Notes: I appreciate you taking a look at my novel, The Girl from the Mountain. If you're a fan of post-apocalyptic fiction, military thrillers, and/or cosmic horror, I think you'll enjoy this story. I completed the novel's first draft back in 2011 and made significant changes in 2016. Since then, I've more-or-less sat on the manuscript while working on other projects. Thanks to a bit of prodding, I've decided to send this story out into the wild with some touch-ups and additional revisions. I welcome any comments or criticisms, and I hope you enjoy The Girl from the Mountain!
