Passionate and poised at the very beginning of her tumultuous rise to power, Mary was already a headstrong woman by the time she was 15. She proved to be a formidable foe for anyone that stands in her way. She can also be a great ally, as she always puts people before herself. One reason Elijah fell for Mary is because she is utterly headstrong, and strong in general as she always takes a stand for what she believes in. She can be really stubborn but is always friendly and kind.

Mary, the only surviving legitimate child of King James V, was six days old when her father died and she acceded to the throne. She spent most of her childhood in France while Scotland was ruled by regents, and in 1558, she married the Dauphin of France, Francis. She didn't want to get married but she was told it would keep her alive and better her country. Mary briefly became queen consort of France but she was far from happy, until his death in December 1560.

Widowed, Mary returned to Scotland and that was when she met a family that were visiting Scotland and had become part of her court. The Mikaelson's. Mary had quickly fallen for Elijah.

4 years later, she married Lord Darnley unwillingly yet again and after a year of a horrible marriage and having a child, Elijah turned her into a vampire so they'd be together forever. 3 years after that, Darnley was found killed (an "animal attack") in the garden.

Mary was so forced to abdicate the thrown and went on the run with the Mikaelson's after a vampire hunt that raged through the country. Soon, Mary was caught by her cousin, Queen Elizabeth, who locked her up in various castles and manor houses in the interior of England. She eventually escaped and fled the country with Elijah.
