《Mending the Battle Wounds (TodoBakuDeku)》Chapter 6

"Leave." Toga hissed as soon as all four of them were back at the dorms, Shoto included.
"Babysitting." Shoto said simply, following after Izuku into his dorm.
Toga gaped after him, but quickly got a hold of herself. "That does not give you the right-"
Shoto finally got annoyed enough to snap. "Look, I don't know if you noticed, but he almost attacked students. He's been here for a week and on the first night he got into a fight with nearly the entire class. I'm not saying it wasn't justified, but the staff has a hard enough time trusting any of you, especially him. If he stands a chance at staying out of jail, I have to try and buffer the situation. If you don't have a problem with him getting thrown into a prison cell for the rest of his life, then I'll walk right out this door and let the pros deal with it. Make your call." He said to her.
Before she could bite back at him, Izuku spoke up. He had already curled up on his bed, pulling his blankets up in defeat. "Guys, just go. He's right."
"You sure?" Dabi asked, pushing himself off of the door frame he had been leaning on. It wasn't that he didn't trust Shoto, it was just that Izuku was a villain and he didn't trust any hero around him.
"I'll be fine, really." Izuku said, just wanting to take a nap. And break some necks, but a nap would have to suffice.
"Fine. I have to go find Shigaraki anyway." Dabi said with a shrug and left the room.
"He's such a wimp." Toga muttered after he left.
"Fight me, crazy." Dabi yelled from outside Izuku's room.
"Gladly!" She yelled back, leaving the room with a smile in Izuku's direction.
"We're all going to jail eventually." Izuku said, more to himself, but Shoto still responded.
"You guys will be fine. You just... need to calm down a little bit." He explained, not thinking it was the best way to phrase his thoughts, but he had never been good with words.
"Clearly." Izuku said with an eye roll. He brought his hands up to his neck tie and loosened it until he could slip it off over his head. He threw it somewhere in his room, not bothering to pay attention. His blazer was next, also ending up somewhere on his floor.
There was the sound of a sigh and Izuku looked over at Shoto. "I know this can't be easy for you guys, and I have no clue what you're all going through with this, but-"
"Exactly," Izuku said, cutting him off. "You have no clue. You have no idea what this is like for us. We were ripped away from our lives, from the only safe haven we've ever had from this god forsaken world, and thrown directly into the lion's den. We had been chewed up and spit out our entire lives by the same kind of people. Why'd you think we do what we do? Think we do it because our lives were sun shine and rainbows? Because we had a mommy and a daddy that kept us safe and protected from all the things that go bump in the night? Because we all had amazing friends that helped and supported us? News flash, not a single one of us had any of that. We were beaten, burned and bruised. We clawed our way through life until finally, someone lent us a hand, one that wasn't going to push us back or punch us. One that helped us get our own footing. We owe them everything. Which is why this," Izuku motioned around the room, to the dorm and the uniform he had discarded. "This will never work. It's an amazing fantasy, but at the end of the day, it's just that. A fantasy."

Shoto blinked at him in surprise. He hadn't been expecting the rant, but he was going to take it in stride. "It doesn't have to be!" He urged. "You've been offered a second chance on a golden platter. All you have to do is take it."
Izuku furrowed his eye brows. "Did you not listen to a thing I just said? Even if we wanted to start playing for the other side, we can't." He said with a huff. He thought Endeavor's kid would be smarter than that.
"Whoever is keeping you from doing the right thing, you don't have to be afraid of them. They're not going to be able to hurt you guys-"
Izuku cut Shoto off, completely an utterly baffled. Pissed off. Offended. "You think we're scared he's gonna hurt us?" He asked.
Shoto was just confused now. Wasn't that what Izuku was getting at?
"We owe him, because he saved our lives. He did everything but hurt us. Do you know what all of us were doing before he showed up?" Izuku hissed. He had stood up and marched right up to Shoto, who just shook his head.
"Himiko was killing everything in sight. She had gone crazy from blood lust because when her parents found out about her quirk, they made her suppress it until she literally went mad." Izuku said, gabbing his finger into Shoto's chest, making him back up. He wasn't scared, but he figured pissing Izuku off more than he already was, was a bad idea. He just went along with it, letting him take his anger out on him.
"Twice was already to far gone to fully save. He had made so many clones of himself, he didn't know which one was real and what ones were fake. If he's not wearing a mask, he feels like his head's splitting in half. Do you know how terrible that feels?" Izuku asked, but got no response. "That's what I thought."
"Tomura was just a kid when Master found him. He didn't have any sort of control over his own quirk and had disintegrated his entire family. He was a child."
"You're father fucked Dabi up so bad that he was literally burn his own skin off until Master stopped him. Ever wonder where he got all those new scars? His own quirk. He was trying to get rid of all the marks you dad made."
'I shouldn't have said that one. Shit, he's gonna kill me.' Izuku thought, referring to Dabi. He still hadn't admitted to being Shoto's brother, but Izuku had just confirmed it pretty damn hard.
Izuku had fallen silent, seething, but not saying anything more. He had just spilt the League's darkest secrets to, not a complete stranger, but someone Izuku wasn't even sure if he could trust.
Shoto grabbed a hold of Izuku's wrist, keeping him from hitting his chest anymore. "What'd about you?" He asked softly.
There wasn't a whole lot known about any of the League, but Izuku had to be one of the better kept secrets. After the death of his mother he fell off the face of the planet, only to turn up months later as a villain. No one had any clue what made the young boy snap. He had just been accept into UA a few days before he disappeared.
"What'd you know?" Izuku asked back.
Shoto felt this was a trick question. What he knew, was that most people thought he had a psychotic break, killed his mother, and ran away to join the villains. Something told the boy that this wasn't correct.

"I know that a lot of people think you killed your mom-"
Izuku broke free from Shoto's grip and stormed to the other side of the room. "I didn't kill her! I didn't kill anyone! I've never killed anyone. I'm not a murderer. God, the thought alone makes me sick." Izuku said, grabbing his stomach as he remembered the night he found her.
He had just gotten back from training with All Might. The day before he had gotten his acceptance letter into UA and he was beyond excited. He couldn't wait to start his journey to becoming a pro hero.
He walked into the kitchen, calling out for his mom. Usually she would show up at the door when he walked in, pulling him into a hug. That night was different.
His confusion only grew when she didn't respond. He walked further into his house, his heart dropping when he made it to the living room.
His mom laid on the ground, blooding surrounding her.
Izuku rushed to her side, his eyes wide as he took in the scene. He could see all the stab wounds that littered her body. In his blind panic, he tried to cover the wounds to stop the bleeding, until he realized that he was to late.
She was already dead.
He could still recall the feeling of his entire world shifting on it's axis. The sudden snap in the back of his head as he drifted away from his own reality. Everything felt like it was too much too fast. He could only see the blood, God there was so much blood. He needed to get out of there. He needed to get away.
So he ran.
He ran and he didn't care about the people watching him sprint out of his house, covered in blood.
He ended up in an alley, where he passed out for the night. The next morning the story was everywhere. Everyone was blaming Izuku. He was a fifteen year old. He was terrified. His mother had just been murdered and he was being blamed for it.
He stayed in the shadows that day, trying to stay hidden. That night he had a plan. He was going to end all of the fear, all of the pain, the suffering. He was going to end it all.
Until someone stopped him.
"Hey, I'm sorry. I don't think you killed her either. I don't know what happened that night, but I don't think you did it." Shoto said, trying to slowly approach Izuku without getting his head bitten off.
Izuku eyed him wearily, but didn't lash out again. "I wasn't home. When it happened, I was out." He said, starting to explain. He had to be careful to not give away his quirk. Even if he blamed All Might for his mother's death, he was still the same nerdy fan boy he was back then and couldn't bring himself to give the secret away, especially since it would create a giant target on his own back.
Shoto stopped moving, realizing that Izuku might actually explain what happened. Izuku could count on one hand, the number of people that knew the truth, and now he was going to add one to that list.
"I came back later than usual. I thought it was weird that she didn't greet me or respond when I called out. I made it to the living room and- and she was there. I panicked when I saw all the blood. I tried to stop it, but then I realized she was already dead." He said.
Shoto thought it over. That would explain all the blood witnesses had said they saw on him. "Why'd you run?" He asked, seeing as that was the one piece he could fit together.
"I was fifteen. I found my mother brutally murdered. I was covered in her blood from trying to save her. All rational thought went out the window and I just knew I had to get out of there. I needed to get away from all the blood." Izuku said, still not being able to believe that apparently that wasn't a normal person's reaction.
Shoto continued to approach him slowly. He had his hands up and grabbed Izuku's wrists in a caring grasp, bring him over to sit on his bed again. "What happened after you ran?" He asked.
Shoto knew that if there was even a hope of Izuku becoming serious about school at UA, he was probably going to need heavy counseling, they all would. But for now, someone listening and understanding his story from a 'good' perspective, would have to be enough.
"I hid out in some dark alley. When I woke up the next morning, everywhere I looked someone was saying that I was the one who killed her. I was scared. I was traumatized by what I had seen, and now everyone was blaming me? I couldn't handle that. All I wanted was my mom back. So I did the only thing I could to make that happen. I was gonna jump, I was so close, but before I could, Master found me. He stopped me and I've never been more grateful to a person." Izuku finished explaining.
"By now, I'm assuming when you say Master you're referring to All For One?" Shoto asked for clarification. All Might had fought with him last year and had finally put him behind bars.
Izuku just nodded his head.
"Wh-" Shoto's next words were cut off by Izuku's dorm door flying open and Kirishima running into the room.
"Todoroki! I need your help." He rushed. He looked over at Izuku, flashing him an apologetic smile. "Sorry, I knew he was supposed to be looking after you and he wasn't in his own dorm, so I just kind of assumed he was here."
Izuku just shrugged, not bothered. Kirishima was a chill guy, Izuku had no problems with him.
"What'd you need help with?" Shoto asked him.
"Bakubro's in a lot of trouble and you always seem to be good at talking to the adults and... and well manipulating them, so we kinda need you." Kirishima explained, scratching the back of his neck nervously.
"Well that's not very heroic." Izuku said with a sly smile at Shoto, who just rolled his eyes in response, but in a sort of playful way that surprised Izuku.
"What'd he do?" Shoto asked, already standing up and moving to the door.
"He... well he... you see... the thing is...."
"Kirishima, spit it out." Shoto said, getting impatient.
"He kind of nearly killed some third year guy." Kirishima finally admitted.
Izuku perked up at his words. "Kacchan did what?!" He asked in disbelief. He could get in serious trouble for that. He could get expelled. He could get arrested. He could have just thrown his dream of becoming a pro out the window.
"Okay, so it was nearly killed, but the guys definitely got a broken jaw and a few second degree burns." Kirishima said, wincing at the memory of the scene.
Izuku was up and out of the room before either of the two other boys could react. He had to go try and get that hot head out of the mess he seemed to create.

Edge Cases (Book 1 Complete!)
Rare classes and powerful skills are helpful. Too bad the system doesn't seem built to handle them. What even are all these errors? Our team of outcasts and adventurers will have to rely on their trust - and the bane of all stories, healthy communication - just to survive, let alone understand what the system is doing. Because they're quickly realizing that it's doing something; to people, to monsters, and maybe even to the gods themselves. And their goal isn't just to survive; it's to make things better. It's a good thing they're not doing it alone. --- Edge Cases is an attempt to take the LitRPG genre and the overpowered MCs trope and write a story where numbers aren't everything. Sometimes it takes trust, support, and just a touch of being very, very clever. Expect a mix of action, slice-of-life, friendship, and ominous worldbuilding. Updates M-W-F at 6pm EST. Cover art by Alovck of Artstation, and typesetting by jessessey right here on RoyalRoad.
