《Gone》Chapter 51- Touch

Virgil growled as he managed to dig a notebook and pencil out of the desk in the bedroom he had been pushed into. His bag, along with everything inside, had been confiscated from him meaning he didn't have his own anymore. He quickly scrawled down a note on the pad before heading to the door and knocking on it. Nothing happened for a moment and Virgil knocked again, louder than before. This time he could hear the guard sigh as he unlocked and opened the door, "What is it?"

Virgil showed the not to the man who read it with a bored expression, 'I want to see Logan Croft.' it read

"You're not supposed to leave the room."

Virgil took the pad back and wrote another note on it, 'We won't leave his room. I want to see Logan Croft.'

The guard sighed, "Write a request to your grandfather, and I will have someone deliver it to him. He will decide if it is allowed or not."

Virgil nodded and quickly did as he was told before ripping out the paper and handing it to the man. Virgil back into the room, the door closed, and he waited for a response.

It took thirty minutes for the door to open again, and as soon as it did Virgil was on his feet. "Alright, come on, this-" Virgil rushed out the door and down the hall to the room next to his. They were supposed to connect through a door in the wall of the rooms they shared, but it had been locked just like every other door and window in the room. "Hey, kid, hold up" the guard called as he rushed to lock Virgil's door. The other guard, the one in front of Logan's door, prepared to grab Virgil if needed but Virgil made no move to go past Logan's door. Instead, he stood in front of it, bouncing on his toes and waiting impatiently for the guard to open it.

The guard watched him warily as the other one quickly made their way over to them before turning to unlock the door. Virgil rushed in as soon as he could and quickly found Logan and grabbed his hand, making his presence known. The nerd jumped, having been too focused to have noticed him enter, but smiled slightly when he saw who it was. He glanced over at the door, one of the guards now stood on the inside of the room, the other was most likely standing on the other side of the door.

Logan turned back to the window he had been facing when Virgil entered. It was a large bay window, spanning a good third of the wall, and it opened up towards the makeshift camp in the back of the castle. Virgil had a similar window in his room. "How are you feeling Virgil?" he asked with worry, "This can't have been what you were expecting?"

No, this hadn't been what Virgil was expecting. But he'd had a vision, and he had been expecting something bad to happen and something bad had happened. He had just assumed it meant his brother and Remus were going to be hurt, not that they would be caught. 'Scared' Virgil signed

Logan hummed, running his hand across the glass, "This can't be easy for you."

Virgil narrowed his eyes slightly in thought, 'You're worried,'

"I am."

'Not for you.'

"No, I'm not concerned for myself. If my uncle says he won't kill me, then he won't kill me." Logan leaned over the built-in bench and placed his forehead on the window and stared down at the ground, "I'm worried for Roman... he won't do well without me. I know it must sound a bit egotistical of me to say so, but he won't."

'He has Remus'

"Yes, that also worries me," Virgil watched Logan watch the ground before sitting down on the bench, back facing the window but not quite leaning on it, "He hasn't seen Remus for two years, when Remus disappeared, Roman was devastated. When it happened, I was the main person he turned to. I'm the person he goes to, for nearly everything... Roman doesn't do well with new things. It makes him nervous, and as you know, when he's nervous he tends to lash out with anger... I just worry for him."

'Pat and Remus will take care of him.'

"And you're brother?"

Virgil snorted, 'Jan's not the caring type. At least not with anybody other then Remus and sometimes me.'

"Do... do you think they'll get along?

'Jan and Roman?' Logan nodded and Virgil shook his head, 'Probably not at first. They kinda... contradict. Will clash'

Logan hummed and moved to sit down on the bench, forehead still pressed to the glass. "I estimate we are, give or take, forty feet up." Logan whispered, so quietly that Virgil almost didn't hear him, "The average human has a fifty percent chance at surviving a fall at that height and injuries are all but guaranteed. There is nothing to break our fall, I estimate a broken leg will be the smallest injury we aquire." Virgil's eyes widened in surprise and he grabbed at Logan's hand, pulling at it slightly, Logan looked at him and sighed, "You're right. Jumping out the idea is not a logical idea."

Virgil pulled at his hand again and Logan turned away from the window, now sitting much like Virgil was, with his back to the window. "Is there a reason you sought me out?" He asked.

The prince frowned as he nodded with embarrassment, 'Don't want to be alone.'

"Ah," Logan said with slight realization, "I understand."

'I wish they took us back to the cells, and let us stay with everyone else. Less scary

Logan hummed in agreement, "I'm sure we'll be allowed to see them again soon."

'But what if we're not? What if we're never allowed to see them again?'

Logan smiled slightly, "One thing I learned while growing up with the twins is that rules can be surprisingly easy to break." Virgil laughed, the guard by the door shifted on his feet, as if already preparing to stop any attempts at doing just that.

Logan sighed tiredly before he leaned back against the window. This was something Virgil would never be able to do, he'd be to afraid that the windows weren't locked right and they'd open, and he'd fall to his doom. Of course, that wouldn't happen, the windows were locked and Logan wasn't stupid enough to lean on something that wasn't properly secured if it could cause him injury.

The prince hesitated as he watch Logan lean back, he was muttering things under his breath, quietly enough so that they barely made it into the air before disappearing forever. He moved to sit against the wall, now facing Logan's side, and looked out the window to the camp below.

Logan's first draft at an escape plan never would have worked. Even if they survived the fall without injury, they'd still have to walk right past the camp. They'd have to make it past the guards on patrol, and the guards at the border of the castle, and then through the forest were Tafe most definitely would have thought to place soldiers to prepare for the coming army Roman had sent for. It would have been impossible, and that was before they factored in having to break the others out of their prison. No, escape wasn't possible. At least, not at the moment.

"Virgil," Logan said, Virgil glanced over at him, "You're hyperventilating. You need to relax, you've already exerted yourself today. If you continue this way, you're going to aggravate your injuries."

'Sorry.' Virgil signed quickly.

Logan said nothing in response and Virgil returned his attention to the window. What about the captured citizens? What condition were they in? They had already seen that some of them were being kept in the cells outside, in the camp. Have any of them died? Virgil knew Janus and Remus had probably done anything in their power to keep the citizens safe but... nothing was guaranteed. If someone kept disobeying or trying to escape, the guards might have killed them. Or if they had gotten hurt in the attack, and hadn't received proper medical care. Or if-.

Virgil grabbed onto Logan's sleeve and pulled slightly

Logan's eyes snapped open, "Yes, what is it?"

Virgil shifted in his seat as he hesitated, his hands moving but signing, only shaking slightly

Logan sat up slowly and put a hand out to show Virgil he meant no harm, to calm him, "It's alright Virgil. What do you need?"

Virgil shook his head, and Virgil covered his face, he couldn't even speak.

"Easy Virgil. You don't want to cause distress. Slowly now, you can do it."

Virgil nodded and paused, waiting for a few moments before trying again, 'Hug' he was finally able to sign clearly enough. He sighed, the word really shouldn't have been so hard to sign.

"Hug?" Logan repeated, and Virgil nodded. "I thought you weren't fond of touch."

'Don't like touch. But-' Virgil froze as he tried to figure out how to continue, he couldn't.

"Alright. You don't like touch, would you like a hug regardless?" He asked gently. Virgil nodded and Logan repeated his action, "I can do that." he told Virgil before reaching out for him. Virgil accepted the hug, but then Logan began leaning back against the window again and he immediately pulled away.

Virgil pulled away in an instant, 'I don't want to lean against the window. What if it breaks? Then we'll fall and we'll land on our heads and die.'

Logan watched him for a moment before he stood up and moved to the bed, deciding not to mention how none of that would have happened. "You need to rest, even if you can't sleep, you're going to lean back."

Virgil followed Logan, taking a glance at the guard who didn't seem to care and honestly just seemed bored. The prince climbed onto the bed, Logan at the edge, and wrapped his arms around him for comfort. Logan shifted a few times, and Virgil rolled his eyes, 'Roman's right,'

"About?"

'You're bad at hugging.' Virgil told him, Logan laughed and agreed, 'Patton gives good hugs.'

"Indeed they do," Logan said with a nod, "You two have grown close, haven't you? A few weeks ago, you weren't letting anybody touch you. But just this morning, you refused to ride with anybody other than them."

'Pat is my best friend now. Nicer than you and Roman were when we met. Also, he's warm and you two aren't.'

Logan hummed in acknowledgment, "Well, I'm happy you've become friends. Believe it or not, the Marquess struggles to make friends with those closer to his age. It is why they prefer to spend time with children, he finds them easier to befriend."

'They're right.'

"You should rest now, I'm sure your brother and Remus would not hesitate to harm me if I made a fragrant enough of an error as to let you worsen your injuries or get sick."

Virgil sighed but pulled out of the hug and turned to lay completely on the bed, rather than lean up against Logan like he had been doing. He might have continued to hug Logan, but he knew himself better. If he fell asleep hugging Logan and woke up hugging Logan, his brain would panic about the touch and completely forget it was he who initiated it. Logan didn't comment on any of this as he got off the bed and walked to the half-bare bookshelf to inspect it and look for any books that might be useful.

Sometimes castles carried books on their own history, filled with information such as where to find secret passageways, or how to get past an unusual door. The Light Realm castle, Roman's home, had three of these books and Logan had read them all. Of course, the twins had used Logan's newfound information to get into trouble but that was nothing new.

Logan sighed with remorse as he thought of Roman. He seriously hoped his boyfriend wasn't going to be causing any trouble. And not just with the guards either, Logan worried Roman might pick fights against those he shared the cell with. Roman could be sensitive at times, and protective, he knew that eventually, Roman was going to be upset at Remus for leaving and going to ask questions. It would probably end with hurt feelings and words no one meant, and if what Logan had heard about Crown Prince Janus was true, then Roman will have probably upset him as well.

"Please be careful Roman."

Roman and Remus sat in the back corner of the cell, facing each other, with their legs crossed in front of them. The brothers were trying desperately to catch up on two years worth of history as fast as they could. The two of them were smiling as they talked, voice overlapping and making the conversation almost incoherent and incomprehensible to others, but to the twins, it was easy. They knew what the other was saying no matter how loud or fast they spoke, talking over each other wasn't a problem.

Janus was sitting at the opposite end of the cell, trying to give Remus as much privacy as the small cell would allow room for. He watched as Remus smiled a real smile for first time in over a month. His boyfriend was practically in tears as he bounced up and down and talked to his brother. He seemed so happy, he was happy. Remus was with his brother for the first time in two years, and had spent most of that time thinking his family had tried to kill him. Janus couldn't blame him for being happy.

He did find himself slightly jealous though. He wished he could talk to his own brother. Pull him close and laugh and catch up and have conversations others didn't understand. Of course, Virgil and Janus had only been separated for a month, and they didn't have the history the twins had. But Janus obviously still cared about him. Virgil was his little brother, he'd do anything for him.

"You know, I haven't seen Roman this happy in nearly four years," the voice of Patton said as he came to stand by Janus, "Can I sit down? When we first met Ann, he didn't like people getting too close. I just want to make sure."

Janus eyes him warily before nodding, "Yes, that's fine."

Patton smiled as they took a seat, "Has Remus ever looked this happy?" he asked.

Janus shook his head, "Not like this. He's been happy, just not like this."

"Do you love him?"

Janus narrowed his eyes and turned to look at Patton with a small glare, "Of course I love him. Why wouldn't I?"

Patton laughed slightly, "Oops, sorry, did I make you nervous? That was a pretty big change in conversation, huh. Sorry about that kiddo." Janus said nothing, simply continuing to watch Patton for a moment. "I just meant, that Ann is always telling us all these wonderful stories about the two of you. I just wanted to hear it from the two of you, but Remus is busy, so...."

"Oh..." Janus said slowly before he turned his attention back to watching the twins. "Yes, I love Remus. I love him very very much. He's adorable and funny. He doesn't care what others think of him or me. He treats Virgil like his little brother, I could never date someone if they were rude to Virgil so I'm very glad the two get along. He's kind, and loving, and brave. He listens to me, he understands me. And I him. We don't have to be afraid around each other, the two of us can just be ourselves. That is something the two of us couldn't really do, without being criticized, until the two of us met."

Patton smiled as he adjusted how he sat, "That's good. Remus had trouble with the whole 'dating' thing when he was younger. He used to be very jealous of Roman, because Roman is very good at wooing others." Patton laughed slightly, "The ironic thing is, for most of the trip, Roman admitted to being jealous of Remus for finding a relationship so beautiful."

"Does he not have the tall boy?"

"Logan? He does, but they only started dating a little bit ago. Like two weeks or so, maybe not even."

Janus hummed, "...how is Virgil?" he asked eventually.

"Oh... uhm, thats a good question actually. He's had some ups and downs this month, his downs could be pretty bad too. His ups were okay though."

"Was he hurt during the trip?"

Patton nodded, "We all were. We ran into some dangerous stuff on our way here. But Ann is very brave. Brave and strong, he handled it really well... I'd still talk to him though. I don't think he fully trusts us enough to tell us everything."

Janus nodded in understanding, "Thats how Virgil is. He can be a hard egg to crack. I'll do what I can, it'll be harder from in here though." The Crown prince looked beyond the bars of the cell, "When did you say that army was coming?"

Patton shrugged unknowingly, "It depends, Logie said anywhere from four days to a week in a half. They're going to use portals, but they have to "

"That's a long time," Janus muttered, "We need a plan. Got any ideas?"
