《Male Lead's Villainess Stepmother》Chapter 4 - Poverty Stunts Ambitions

Fantasies were pretty but the reality wasn’t quite so. As much as Yan Shuyu wanted to just move away so that the male lead’s controlling father could experienced what it meant by “losing one’s pants” but after she had reached for the original owner’s phone and checked her bank account online, she had no choice but to give up on that idea.

Unfortunately, money talks. Yan Shuyu couldn’t figure out how the original owner, who had tens of thousands of dollars when she left the night scene, had only less than $10,000 left after just two months.

Most likely even the original owner couldn’t answer that question. Yan Shuyu tried long and hard and finally had to give up on trying to figure that out and turned to look for other options.

Ten thousand dollars might be a lot for a student. Yan Shuyu looked down at her instant son that was sleeping in her arms and thought to herself that it was not feasible to move to a different city with her little burden. She heard that it’s costly to raise a child, and raising herself… could also be quite costly.

The spoiled Yan Shuyu would prefer not to have to lower her standard of living.

Alright, so she might not be able to move to a different town, but she could still move, right? Yan Shuyu worried that human resource at her current workplace already has her address on file. It’d be alright if CEO Zhou didn’t care about what had happened. If he felt that he was taken advantage of, he could find out her whereabouts easily and would be able to retaliate. Or, it’d seem like she was playing hard to get. Plus, this was the center of the city and not too far from the Zhou’s headquarters. Even if Zhou Qinhe didn’t care about what happened last night, she’d still worry that she’d run into the father and son one day and that wouldn’t be too pleasant either.

So, for the sake of safety, it’s best that move from the center of the city to somewhere a little more remote. That way her chances of running into the wealthy father and son would go down significantly.

Unfortunately with the remaining amount in the original owner’s card, it might be difficult to move. Yan Shuyu had looked for places with her friend previously. She had an idea that when you move to a new place, you’d need to pay a few extra thousand dollars for deposit. She did not have enough money for deposit.

The financially broke Yan Shuyu looked around the quite elegantly decorated room and suddenly had a very naïve thought – the original owner had only been living here for two months and the room was kept in an immaculate state, perhaps she could go ask the landlord for the deposit back?

Thinking about that, Yan Shuyu wanted to reach for her phone and call the landlord. The slightest motion from her woke up Zhang Yuanjia. He rubbed his eyes with his little fists, blinked, and asked in his little kid’s voice, “Mommy, is it time to go to school already?”

“School?” Yan Shuyu had to pause for a second before she suddenly recalled, “Oh yeah, you started kindergarten recently!”

And it was particularly expensive as well. Yan Shuyu finally recalled why the original owner was so broke – kindergarten fees for Zhang Yuanjia was $4,000 a month and paid by the quarter. So that alone was over $20,000.

Over $20,000, Yan Shuyu’s heart hurt just from thinking about it.

Then she thought about it some more. The original owner didn’t have a lot of choices. She lived in a first-tier city. The cost of living there was already high, not to mention that they were living in the central part of the city, so they did not qualify for the much cheaper public kindergarten. Private ones were expensive, and the one that Zhang Yuanjia was attending was already a relatively cheaper one.

A single mother registering her kid to a kindergarten that cost upward of $20,000 sounded excessive, but Yan Shuyu could relate to that. She had been raised in a family that believed in the best education and everything else for the children. Ever since she was a child, her parents had always wanted to give her the best that they could provide. If she had her own child, she’d probably do the same as well.

If even someone like her would be that way, naturally the ambitious original owner, who wanted her son to be on the top of the pyramid, would be like that as well.

Of course, being able to understand the reasoning behind it didn’t mean she agreed with the original owner’s actions. As she wanted to move away, it’d be great if she could get some of the money back from the kindergarten. They didn’t need to live in such an expensive area any more. Kindergartens around her new area must be cheaper than the current one.

Yan Shuyu, her mind filled with the ideas of moving away, temporarily forgotten about her instant son. Suddenly, she heard the little kid asking her, “Mom, what time is it now?”

“Oh, I’m sorry. It’s already 7:15.”

“It’s alright,” said the little kiddo while shaking his head politely. Then, as he rubbed his eyes, he scrambled off of her, “Yuanbao needs to get ready to go to school.”

The way the little kiddo shook his head really looked a little like a golden yuanbao, making Yan Shuyu stared at him in awe. Zhang Yuanjia, now with both of his feet planted firmly on the ground, turned, and with a slightly sullen look, he asked, “Isn’t mommy going to make Yuanbao breakfast?”

Cooking? Yan Shuyu thought to herself, she didn’t know how to cook. Back home, she was still the baby of the family, who was fed all the time. No way she could cook; not in this lifetime. But, looking at the cute face of her instant son, she didn’t reject him right away. Instead, she patted her wallet and said, “we will go eat out today. Then I will take you to kindergarten, what do you say?”

Once they got to the kindergarten, she could even ask the teacher about a refund. Oh, she was such a smarty~.

Zhang Yuanjia found her suggestion acceptable. He nodded his little head and said, “Okay, Yuanbao will go brush his teeth and wash his face now!”

“Okay, go!” Watching the little body pitter pattered toward the bathroom on his little feet, Yan Shuyu looked down on her own uniform that she was still in and got to work. She found a pretty dress from the closet and paired it with a trench coat.

The original owner’s taste in clothing was quite close to hers, except much prettier. Yan Shuyu spun around a couple of times in front of the mirror. Pleased with what she saw, she finally walked toward the bathroom to get ready.

Yan Shuyu, who cared more about how she looked, didn’t even think about her instant son’s size. At his age, there were many things he couldn’t easily do on his own. Luckily, kids from poor families matured faster, and Zhang Yuanjia was definitely more mature than other kids his age. By the time Yan Shuyu came out from the bathroom, he had already plopped himself down on the blanket and changed. He was sweating from the operations, but he was able to complete his tasks.

Yan Shuyu felt even more entitled to not worry about anything else. She sat in front of the dresser and decided to give herself a nice makeup so she could look blindingly pretty others. She didn’t expect the little villain was already quite bossy at his young age. Standing behind her, he said, “Mommy, I am going to be late for school!”

“Oh? What time does school start?”

“Eight.”

“That early?” Yan Shuyu checked the time and reluctantly put down the foundation liquid in her hand. She quickly put some lipstick on and announced, “Okay, let’s go!”

Zhang Yuanjia already has his backpack on his back. Standing next to Yan Shuyu and looking up at her, perhaps noticing something different about her today, his eyes beamed and he said, “Mommy is so pretty today, like stars in the sky!”

Yan Shuyu assumed he was praising about how amazing she looked. Filled with mysterious self-confidence, she leaned down and gave him a smack on his cheek, “Of course, your mommy is the prettiest!”

Even without makeup, she still was the prettiest woman on this street!

Filled with confidence, Yan Shuyu left the house holding her son’s hand in hers.

They lived in a dual purpose residential / commercial building, but even though there were malls and shops on the streets and lots of food places, none of them were opened at this hour.

Zhang Yuanjia, the one who’d be competing with the male lead for his glory, was quite a smart boy at his young age. When Yan Shuyan was standing downstairs in the middle of the busy commercial street, baffled, he suddenly said to her, “Mom, Lingling said there’s a shop by our school that serves really good soy milk. She gets a bowl of it everyday on her way to school.”

“Really?” Yan Shuyu held his hand tight and said, “Then let’s go get ourselves some soy milk!”

Following the lead of kiddo Zhang Yuanjia, they easily located the breakfast shop by his kindergarten. After a hearty meal, the mother and son resumed holding hands and walking toward the kindergarten again.

The teacher welcoming the students of the kindergarten happened to be Zhang Yuanjia’s class teacher, Teacher Lin, today. Teacher Lin looked like a very quiet and very patient young woman. She waved at them from a distance away, “Classmate Zhang Yuanjia, Yuanjia’s Mommy, good morning.”

Zhang Yuanjia, in his well-mannered way, greeted his teacher, “Good morning, Teacher Lin.”

Teacher Lin bent over and patted him on his head, took his hand, and said, “Say bye-bye to mommy then go to your own classroom, okay? Your little buddies are all there.”

Compared to the gentle and delicate kindergarten teacher, Yan Shuya looked much more like a single person. She didn’t even bother with any routine enjoining. She just casually waved at the little kiddo and acted like her job was done, acting nothing like a real mother.

Zhang Yuanjia seemed to already be used to that. He politely bid her farewell before he nonchalantly turned around and walked inside the kindergarten.

Now that her kid was gone, she wasn’t in a hurry to go home. She stood where she was and approached Teacher Lin in a very straightforward manner, “Teacher Lin, I have a favor to ask.”

“Oh, what is it?”

Yan Shuyu casually made up an excuse, “There were some changes at my workplace, we might be transferred to Tianning District….”

Hearing that, Teacher Lin looked worried, “That’s pretty far away, you will need to switch the subway a few times to get here.”

That was the whole purpose. Ideally, she would never seen the male lead or his father for the rest of her life. Thought Yan Shuyu, but she maintained the troubled look, “Exactly, it will be a hassle to commute here, which is what I wanted to ask, if we are to transfer in the middle of the school year, can we get a refund for the remaining time?”

Teacher Lin shook her head and said definitely, “Yuanjia’s Mommy, unfortunately our school has very clear rules about that. We will not be able to refund you for that reason. In fact, not just our school, no kindergarten in the city would issue a refund.”

Even though Yan Shuyu hadn’t been around the block many times, it didn’t mean she was stupid. She understood subtext, the definitete way that Teacher Lin had put it meant there was no room for negotiation at all. There was no possibility at all, she felt very defeated.

Teacher Lin was still comforting her gently next to her, “Yuanjia Mommy, maybe you can see if there any other options at your workplace. His tuition aside, switching schools is not a good thing for a child. Yuanjia is a smart and mature kid, so he’s also more sensitive than other kids his age. He had finally gotten familiar with the kids in his class, going to a new environment now would surely be a shock for him.”

Hearing Teacher Lin’s words, Yan Shuyu had no choice but to nod unhappily, “Okay, let me see what other options I have.”
