《Love on Top》Ch.37

Ever since I told Sam that I was pregnant, he was very careful. I couldn't blame him for being careful because this is our very first child we are having together. New parents always freak out when it comes to have their first child. I bet that if we had our second child a few years along the line after the first one, he'd relax a little. I actually found it quite cute that he was trying very hard to be the best father he can be. Other than Sam knowing about the baby, my sister's and Chad knew as well as Arabella and Fredrick, but Sam's parents and my grandparents did not know at all. We decided to visit them each one by one to tell them the news. I knew that once I told my grandparents, my grandmother would host a cookout to celebrate with my entire family. As for Sam's mother, I love her, but I know how over the top she'll be. Sam's mom would probably throw some type of elegant and grand party to celebrate my pregnancy and Sam and I's engagement.
"Are you excited to tell your grandparents about the baby and that we got engaged?" He asked.
"I am. They might be a little disappointed that I'm having a child before marriage, but they'll be happy nonetheless," I smiled softly.
"They should also be happy that you are getting engaged," He said.
"More like over the moon happy," I joked. He chuckled.
"I'm kind of afraid to tell my mother," He said.
"Why?" I asked.
"Because she's...what's the word...extra," He said, "My mother is extra." I giggled.
"Sam, that's not nice. She's your mother," I smiled.
"Oh you know it's true, Daphne. My mother goes overboard when it comes to us," He said, "I love her, but she's just extra."
"How so?" I asked.
"Remember when we came back from Bora Bora? Remember how she instantly assumed that we were engaged and started to make plans for an engagement party? Or how she assumed you were pregnant last month and started making plans for a baby shower?" He questioned.
"Okay, Sam. I see your point, but you can't blame her when, like, a year ago, it seemed as if you weren't ever going to get married," I responded, "Plus you should enjoy having a mother who wants to do things like this for you." He sighed and I knew it was because he knew that I was right.
"You're right," He said.
"I always am," I grinned.
"Speaking of mothers, has she even contacted you about the baby?" He asked.
"I don't know and I don't care," I grimaced.
"I know Regina or Marcela probably told her," He said.
"I know they did and I don't care about what she has to say because as far as me and the baby are concerned, she can stay in her damn lane with her bitter ass," I spat venomously.
"Oh-Kay..." Sam trailed off.
"Sorry, Sam, but to be honest, I don't care if my mother knows about our baby. The only thing I care about from her is if she says anything negative because our baby is innocent in all of this. This baby is innocent and if she can't see that, then she needs to stay the hell away from me, away from us," I responded.
"I can see where you're coming from," He said. All I could do was just sigh in response. He looked over at me for a split second with a small frown. His attention went back to the road. I looked out the window as the rain beat against the window. Sam suddenly takes my hand into his and rubs his thumb soothingly over it. I smiled softly.

"Sorry I brought it up," He spoke up.
"It's fine, Sam. I honestly didn't mean to snap like that though," I said.
"Daphne, it's alright. I understand how you feel about your mother. I can't blame you," He assured me.
"If she hadn't been so horrible to me all my life, then maybe, just maybe, we would've had a good relationship with each other today, but I don't think that'll ever happen considering the circumstances now," I explained.
"Yeah. I guess you're right," He nods. We sat in silence for a few minutes before I started thinking of something.
"After we leave my grandparents' house, let's head somewhere else before we go see your parents," I told him.
"Why?" He asked.
"Because I forgot to do something when we first started dating and I just remembered it now," I answered.
"What is it?" He questioned.
"You'll see when we get there," I smiled.
"Alright," He nodded.
When we arrived at his parents' house, Sam's mother ran out the house to great us with his dad right behind her. She had a big smile on her face as she came towards us. She instantly pulled me into a hug.
"Daphne, let me see the ring," She excitedly said.
"Oh...uhh...sure," I responded with a small smile.
"Honey, let's go inside first," Sam's dad said.
"You're right. Come on, Daphne. Let's go inside so you can show me that ring of yours," She gushed.
"Sure," I nodded. She practically dragged me inside behind her. I looked back at Sam and his dad who were just laughing at us. I turned to look ahead again as I was lead into the house. Sam's mom lead me into the living room and instantly sat me down on the couch.
"Alright, Daphne. Let me see the ring," She beamed. I showed her my hand and she took it into hers. She gasped at the sight of the ring.
"It's so beautiful," She said.
"Thank you. I think so too," I smiled softly.
"Mom, you were just going to ignore me?" Sam asked.
"Oh. Hi, Sam," She responded. Sam's dad laughed while Sam just pouted like the big baby he is.
"Mom," Sam whined.
"Quit being a big baby," She waved him off. I giggled and Sam glared at me causing me to shut up.
"Sam, quit glaring at your soon-to-be wife," She scolded. He rolled his eyes. I soon heard the sound of Sam saying 'ow' after his dad smacked the back of his head.
"Don't roll your eyes at your mother," He reprimanded.
"Before I forget, you two said that you had something to tell us," Sam's mom said.
"Yeah we did," I grinned.
"Well, what is it?" She asked.
"I'm pregnant," I announced. His mother gasped for the second time today and put she hands over her mouth.
"Are you serious?" She queried.
"Congratulations, son," His dad patted him on the back.
"Thanks, dad," He responded.
"How far along are you?" She questioned.
"As of now, I'm three and a half weeks," I answered.
"I am so excited. Not only are you two engaged, but you two are having a baby," She said, "I can't wait to plan the wedding and the baby shower." Sam, his dad, and I exchanged looks.
"But first we need to hold an engagement party for you two where we can also announce Daphne's pregnancy," She informed us.

"Mom, you don't need to go that far," Sam said.
"Oh, but I do, Sam," She replied.
"Honey, he's right," His dad said.
"Jiao-long, I want everyone to know that my son is going to marry an amazing woman, who he is also having a baby with," She whined.
"I think Sam and Daphne don't want to let all those people know that they're engaged," He told her.
"I know they don't, but Morgan's mother keeps pestering me about him just so she can have her parasitic daughter get back with him," She said.
"Oh so Morgan's been asking about him?" I asked.
"Yes she has," She replied.
"I guess this will be a good idea," I smiled slyly.
"I don't like that look she has on her face," I heard Sam mutter to his father.
"Me either, son," His dad replied.
"I guess Morgan and her family will be the first ones to get an invite," His mom said.
"Let's make her a VIP," I smirked.
"Daphne, don't be petty," Sam said.
"Whaaaat? I am not being petty," I innocently told him.
"What did I do to deserve such a daughter-in-law like you?" His mother asked.
"I guess two evil, but great minds think alike," His dad remarked.
"Uh-Huh," Sam nodded.
After practically planning an engagement party and baby shower with Sam's mom, we both left and headed to the florist. Sam and I, when we arrived at a shop called Daisy's Bloom Room. I grabbed a bouquet of blue orchids and headed straight to the register with Sam who was trailing behind me.
"What are we getting these for?" He asked.
"You'll see," I smiled.
"Oh. Alright," He nodded. Once I finished paying for them, I thanked the cashier and led Sam out of there.
"Do you mind if I drive?" I asked.
"Sure," He handed me the keys and I handed him the flowers.
"Please don't mess those up," I said.
"I won't," He replied. We got into the car and I pulled out of the parking lot of the flower shop. The car ride to our destination was a quiet, but comfortable one. I knew that Sam was still wondering about as in to where we were going and what the flowers were for. We had finally arrived at our destination, a cemetery. Sam turned to me with a questioning look on his face.
"A cemetery? Who's grave are we visiting?" He queried as we got out of the car. He still had the bouquet of orchids in his hands.
"You'll know when we get there, but be aware that this person is probably dying to meet you," I responded.
"Dying? Daphne, really?" He pulled a straight face.
"Oh you know what I meant," I waved him off, "Now let's go before I get into some trouble." I started walking ahead onto the path.
"Trouble? What kind of trouble could you get into here?" Sam asked from behind.
"Big trouble. Now come on," I called over my shoulder. Sam began following me up the path. The walk there was only a few minutes long, which I was thankful for because had it been further, I would've drove the car up here. Sam was now walking beside up the trail and he was also making sure that I was okay too. I appreciated him doing that for me. We reached our final destination. A rectangular grave stone that had a medium sized picture in it with a photo of a man with honey brown skin, black curly hair, a beautiful and perfectly white smile with straight teeth, light brown eyes, and a muscular body from years of sports and working out. The epitaph read,

I took the flowers from Sam who stood behind me silently. I stooped down and gently placed them onto the grave.
"So I guess you're probably upset with me, huh? I guess I haven't visited you as much as I should have one in the past, but honestly dad, I'm sorry. I'm really really really sorry," I said looking down at my feet as if he was there in front of me, scolding me like a child.
"I know you probably want to break off a tree branch and just chase me around with it," I chuckled looking at the granite headstone, "I can't blame you though. It's been over a year since I visited you and I know that there isn't really any excuse for me not to visit. I am so sorry, dad. I didn't mean to forget about you." I started to sniff.
"I really am sorry for forgetting about you like that and I know that if you were here, you'd probably hug me and tell me that it was alright and that it was okay, but you and I both know that, that would be a lie. It's not alright that I did this to you and it's not alright that I just decided to show my face like this after a year," I croaked as tears started spilling from my eyes, "I am such a bad child for not visiting you, dad. I am so sorry for not visiting at all in the past year. I hope you can forgive me for my carelessness." I wiped my tears with the back of my arm.
"I'm sorry I forgot, but it's just that things got worse between mom, Sidney, and I. I know you hated it when they would be mean to me and that you hated it when we would fight over every little thing which made you force us to apologize, but this time, an apology is not enough," I sniffed, "Now that you're not here, the insults, the constant putting me down, and emotional damage they caused me was too much this time. I know that you'd probably just stand here and shake your head in disapproval, but you have to understand that this time it was too much to the point of where I pretty much cut all ties with them. I know you wanted us to be more of a family, but I don't think that'll happen ever again, the fairy tale fantasy of us being the perfect little family that gets along." Sam wrapped his arms around me in a comforting embrace. I smiled softly as the tears continued to flow.
"I know you're probably wondering as in to who this strange man standing behind me is," I chuckled, "Dad, this is Sam. We've been dating for over a year now and just last night, he proposed to me. He asked grandpa for my hand in marriage of course, which was very honorable of him. Not mention that we're also having a baby too, which means that you're a grandpa. I wish you were here to witness me and my pregnancy during this time. I wish you were here so you could get to know Sam and see how much of a good man he is. I wish you were here to walk me down the aisle. I wish you were here to hold the baby in your arms and smile down at him or her with that wonderful smile of yours while telling the baby that they are lucky to have me, your daughter, as their mother." Sam kissed my cheek softly.
"I wish you were here to give me some advice on how to raise a child and to give advice to Sam as well on how to protect the baby if they are a boy or something. I know you two would have an extensive conversation on what types of guys would be best for fending off potential boyfriends, I explained. The wind blows a little against my face and I giggled.
"I guess what I said about fending off this baby from potential boyfriends must have been right," I beamed. Sam chuckled behind me.
For the next few hours, Sam and I sat at my dad's grave until it hit sunset just talking to him. About any and everything that has happened from Sam and I meeting to now. Let's just say that by the time sunset hit, we weren't even finished on explaining everything to him. It felt great to just talk to my dad and get all that stuff off my chest. I promised to come back to the grave to finish telling him the story before leaving with Sam. I even promised to bring Sam along again so he could talk to him and have a fresh face to have talk to him other than me, my siblings, my grandparents, and my relatives.
