《Outlawry》Chapter 9 ~ Ava//A Starless Midnight

I was beginning to have second thoughts about this. What would he do if I didn't come over? The note said if I wanted to live, I had to come. I looked down at my watch.
It was 11:55. He wouldn't be expecting me for another five minutes. Luther seemed like the sort of person that needed everything to be exactly right. If I showed up thirty seconds early, what would he do? I didn't want to know.
In a desperate act, I sprinted down the street away from his house. The air was hot and sticky. Street lights illuminated the streets, giving it an eerie glow. I ran and ran until I felt fire crawl up my throat.
In the distance, I saw a tall, dark figure approaching. It clearly wasn't Luther, but the person looked quite threatening.
Great, I thought. First I run from Luther, and now I'm going to be assaulted by some random stranger.
I looked around, my heart beating not only from my sprint, but from the anticipation.
The person approached faster. I jogged away. I heard him pick up the pace, so I started to run faster too. He ran even faster. I let out a shriek as he caught up to me and cupped a hand around around my mouth.
I thrashed around, but the person held me close to him, keeping me still.
"Ssshhh," he said. "Ava, it's just me."
I stopped squirming. This person's voice sounded familiar.
"Gomez?" I whispered.
"Who else?"
He released me and I spun around to face him. I let out a sigh of relief, seeing that it was someone somewhat familiar, even if I didn't completely trust him.
"What are you doing here?" I asked. "It's midnight..."
"I know," he replied. "But I was going to check on you. I suppose you changed your mind about Luther."

I crinkled my brows. "Gomez, I am so scared."
He bowed his head and looked up at me. "You should be. You have every right to be."
I gulped. "I don't know what to do."
"Let me just tell you one thing, chica," he began as he stepped closer. "If you don't go there tonight, he will take you by force. And anything he had planned for you...it will be 10 times worse."
I let out a sigh, for I knew that he was right. "So, I go back?" I glanced down at my watch. 11:59.
He nodded. "And hurry. He doesn't want to be kept waiting."
I twirled around and sprinted down the street back towards Luther's house. I could hear Gomez cackle in the distance.
What is it with him? Why is he helping me?
I shuddered. Just before I reached his house, I slowed down to catch my breath. I looked down at the watch. 12:00. I let out a nervous breath.
Just as I began to take another step forward, someone snuck up behind me and put their hand on my mouth, grabbed my hands and held them behind my back. I gasped.
The hand was white, clean and had a chalky texture. He leaned down next to my ear and whispered, his hot breath filling my head.
"You're late, Ava Lane," he spoke in his shaky voice. "And I don't like playing by myself. The games I want to play require two players."
I gulped. "Luther," I said into his hand. "Don't hurt me."
He released my hands and slid his hand down my stomach and under my pants. I took in a sharp breath.
"I can't make any promises."
