《Zero Falls: Season One》Cipher's Reign-Part Five

Bill couldn't imagine how he got to this point.
He was now sitting at the foot of Will's bed, while his brother rested soundly. A while earlier, he thanked the Oak twins for taking care of Will until he returned, and bid them farewell. Afterwards, the Pine twins could come inside the shack, and they now waited downstairs.
Earlier, Dipper had chastised Bill for throwing the journal, and Bill replied that he had no other choice, and that Dipper's life was more important than the book. However, Bill did feel a tinge of regret for leaving the journal behind, because Jill could easily use it against them, if she wasn't powerful enough already.
Bill wanted to fight back, but he could barely summon his powers, without being inflicted by a sharp pain. He didn't get it, how come it only hurt now? In the end, if he wanted to protect everyone he cared for, there was only one thing to do...
Bill looked back at his brother. Fortunately, Will's wounds were bandaged, so he wasn't loosing anymore blood. Bill frowned, when the blue haired boy shivered slightly, and the blond reached out to pull the blanket over him. But as he did, Will's eyes suddenly shot open and the boy sat up.
Bill watched, as Will rubbed his head groggily, before slowly turning towards the blond.
Will blinked, as though not noticing Bill at first. "Bill, what--"
Bill didn't give him time to finish, as he reached out and pulled Will into an embrace. The blond tried not to squeeze him too hard, since he was afraid of hurting his brother. Afterwards, Bill released him, and couldn't contain the relieved smile that spread across his face.
"Will, I'm so glad you're okay," Bill said, then asked gently. "Do you remember anything?"
"I remember some things, things I'd rather forget," Will said, a darkness veiled across his eyes, as he gazed down at his bandages.
Bill frowned, but decided it was best not to make his brother relive those traumatic memories. "Are you still hurt?"
"Only a little bit," Will answered. "Not as much as before."
"That's good," The blond replied, rubbing his arms sheepishly.
Will then noticed the blisters on Bill's forearms, and his eyes widened. "Bill, what happened to you!?"
Bill looked down at his arms sheepishly. "About that...I have my powers. And it turns out, fire hurts like hell."
"I don't think I want you using your powers, if it's gonna hurt you," Will said, seriously.
"Hey, I was worried that your powers might get you hurt, but that didn't stop you from using them, didn't it?"
"Point taken," Will admitted, then gently placed a hand on Bill's shoulder.
Instantly, the burn marks on Bill's skin grew smaller, and the stinging vanished. The scars were still very noticeable, but at least it didn't hurt anymore.
"Thanks," Bill said, gratefully.
Will nodded. "Did you tell the others, yet?"
"Not yet," Bill sighed. "Dipper and Mabel assumed I got the burns from Kill."
"Don't hesitate this time," Will told him. "I know it's hard, but let's not keep them in the dark any longer."
"I know," Bill agreed.
There was a moment of silence, Will then looked at him questionably. "So, how did you find me?"
Bill breathed heavily, rethinking everything that had happened, before he began to catch Will up to speed on recent events. He explained that Jill and Kill caged Wendy, Stan, and others in a facility, and that before they could free them, the press showed up. He also mentioned the Oak twins.

"The Oak twins?" Will repeated, in surprise.
"Yeah, by the way, don't use the shower for a while," Bill said.
Will titled his head. "Why?"
"Trust me, I'm sparing you some nightmares."
"Okay...?" Will said, in confusion. After a brief silence, the blue haired boy then asked. "So, our friends are trapped somewhere?"
"Yep," Bill replied.
"What are we gonna do?" His brother said, in panic. "How are we going to help them?"
Bill paused, before giving Will a serious look. "That's easy," He said. "I have to leave."
Will stared. "What?"
"All of this started, because of me," Bill said, sorrowfully. "Leaving this town is the only way to keep Dipper and the rest safe."
"Bill, we can't leave!" Will exclaimed.
"You misunderstood, you're not leaving, I am."
"What?" Will questioned.
Bill trembled slightly, as he tried to contain his emotions. "You have friends here, people who care about you, and compared to the two of us, you're innocent. I'm the problem, I lured Kill and Jill here, and endangered everyone in this town. I need to leave, but I don't want to force you away from your home."
"This is your home, too!" His brother insisted. "And, it won't even feel like home without you! Please, don't do this, we can figure this out--"
"We're out of options," The blond said. "Kill and Jill are after me, once I'm gone, they might leave this town alone."
"You don't know that," Will noted. "Also, you have your powers now, you can fight back."
"I can barely control my powers!" Bill snapped. "Also, what good will fighting back do? Even if Kill and Jill are gone, there will always be another threat out to get me. I refuse to be a burden any longer."
"But, you're not a burden. You're my best friend. Please, don't leave..."
"This is my decision, Will," Bill countered. "Wherever I go, those monsters will follow, and you have to accept that."
There was a heavy silence, that seemed to drain out all life. A hundred emotions seemed to flash across Will's face, before it was set in determination.
"If you're leaving...so am I."
Bill shook his head. "Will, don't--"
"Why not?" Will snapped, blinking back tears. "We promised to be there for each other. I don't care about what I'm leaving behind, as long as I can keep you safe."
"You're willing to leave this town behind?" Bill asked.
Will smiled sadly. "We'll always have the memories."
"It's decided, then," Bill said. "I'll order some bus tickets, and we'll leave soon enough."
"You think Dipper and Mabel will be okay?" Will asked. "You know, with their friends being captured and the town being against them?"
Bill gave him a reassuring look. "Dipper and Mabel are powerful beings, they'll take care of everything. They...they don't need us."
"I guess, you're right," Will sighed.
"Baa!"
The two looked down, and saw Gompers peering up at them. The goat immediately jumped onto the bed, before resting on Will's lap. Will patted his head.
"Sorry pal, I don't think they allow animals on the bus," Will told him, softly. "Besides, this is your home, it'll be unfair to take you away from it."
Gompers nuzzled against Will's arm, and Will turned to Bill. "Hey, you think Mabel will take care of Gompers while I'm gone?"

"Of course," Bill replied.
Will nodded. "Good. I don't want him to be lonely..."
The blue haired boy trembled, the rims of his eyes began tearing up. Bill could only watch helplessly, before he made a move to comfort his brother. Bill wrapped an arm around Will, and pulled him close, allowing the boy to cry on his shoulder. They sat there for what felt like hours, pondering over everything they're planning to give up.

Gideon's wrists were tied together.
He tried to struggle out, but it was impossible. Around him, were the Guardians that had been captured, and had their wrists bind like him
"Damn that Demon!" Gideon snapped. "I can't believe Jill was manipulating all those people!"
Wendy glared at him coldly. "Wow, how hypocritical of you."
Gideon blinked. "What?"
"You tried to manipulate Will into killing his own brother," She sniped. "Compared to you and Jill, she's the lesser of two evils."
"But, I was only trying to protect him!" Gideon insisted. "I predicted Bill would destroy everything!"
"Oh, I didn't think you knew Bill more than his own brother."
Gideon frowned. "No, I don't...but, my predictions have never failed me before!"
"Well, your latest prediction said that Guardians are evil," the redhead remarked.
"That's different, that prediction is all wrong!"
"Oh, so it's only wrong when you say it is?" Wendy snapped. "You're only okay with it, if the predictions are yours, and you choose to believe that Will was exaggerating because some stranger told him that his brother is a destroyer of worlds."
"I...I don't think Will was exaggerating," Gideon said, softly. "I'm just worried about him..."
"Sounds to me, that you can't admit that you were wrong," The redhead noted.
"This isn't about me!" The young psychic snapped.
"Yes, it is! You're the entire reason we're in this mess!" Wendy yelled, back.
"You two, shut your traps," Stan told them. "We can toss the blame later, but now, we have to think of a way to get out of here."
"The old man is right," Robbie agreed. "We need to think of a plan."
"What plan?" Pacifica snapped. "We can't use our powers with these binds on, and the best we can do is wait for Dipper and Mabel to show up."
"Then, we'll wait," Stan decided. "Hopefully, it'll be soon--"
He was cut off, when footsteps approached them. They turned to see Jill entering the room, this time, in her own body.
"What happened to the mayor?" Candy demanded.
"He's fine," Jill said, dismissively. "He's back in his manor, and doesn't remember a single thing about coming here. With that out of the way..."
The Demon paused in front of Stan, before throwing down two objects in front of them. They were Journal #3 and Journal #2. And they were both opened, to reveal a page with strange blueprints on it.
"Do you recognize these?" Jill demanded, glaring at Stan.
Stan narrowed his eyes. "No, should I?"
"You should, because I recognized my older brother's sigils on this blueprint," She sneered. "This machine harnesses the same energy as the portal that Ford entered. What I want to know, are the two connected?"
"How should I know, Bill was the one who summoned that portal," Stan snapped.
Like a strike of lightening, Jill struck Stan across his face with the back of her hand. After being smacked, the Day Guardian remained nonchalant, with a red mark on his cheek.
"I don't have time to explain, you old fool!" Jill hissed. "Just, tell me the purpose of this machine, so I can figure out this mess!"
Stan chuckled. "Nice try, but that's not the first time I've been slapped by a woman," He remarked. "Also, I don't know anything about this machine."
Jill groaned in frustration, before muttering. "The rest of the instructions must be in Journal #1."
She whirled towards Gideon. "Where did you find Journal #2?"
Gideon glared at her. "I didn't find it, it was past onto me by my ancestors. I have no clue where the first journal is."
"Then, that just leaves my younger brothers," Jill said, thoughtfully. A smirk crossed her face.
"No!" Wendy exclaimed, angrily. "They don't have the other journal, they only found the one!"
"What an unconvincing lie," The Demon shot back. "You can beg all you want, but I'm going to get that journal, and find out where Ford was cowering all these years!"
Jill was about to make her leave, when Kill entered the room. He looked tired, he had a couple burn marks on his bare torso, and a large gash in his heart was in a process of healing itself.
"Kill, where the hell were you?" Jill snapped.
Kill cleared his throat awkwardly. "I...I was fighting against Bill."
"Bill?" Jill questioned, then looked her brother up and down. "I'm guessing from your crappy appearance, he got his powers back?"
Gideon's eyes widened, when Kill nodded. "Yeah, he almost burned me to a crisp."
"Well, this could definitely give us an advantage," Jill smiled. "With his newfound demonic powers, it might be easier to influence him."
"Yeah, but it'll also be easier for him to destroy us," The Red Demon countered.
"He can't destroy anyone, if he can't control his powers," Jill reassured. "And with that kind of strength, only a Demon can teach him the works. Soon, he'll be begging us for help."
Kill grinned at the prospect, then turned to look at the journals on the ground. "Oh, where's the third one?"
"I suspect that Will and Bill has it," The female Demon explained.
"If you want, I can always hunt them down."
Jill shook her head. "That won't be necessary...actually, I think I have a better idea."
She turned back to the captives, a devious glint in her eyes. Robbie must have recognized that look and what it meant, because he sank himself to the floor, and covered his head with his arms as much as his tied wrists could allow.
"Don't!" He pleaded, desperately. "Not again!"
"Aww, it's cute that you think covering your ears will work," Jill laughed. "Now, let me serenade you once more, along with your friends..."
The others could only watch in horror, as Jill opened her mouth, and uttered the first melodic notes.

Bill and Will waited by the bus stop.
Mabel and Dipper were there in human disguises, to bid them farewells. Mabel was currently giving both of them the biggest hug possible.
"Don't forget me, okay?" She said, blinking back tears.
"We won't, Shooting Star," Bill promised.
"You'll take care of Gompers, right?" Will asked her.
"Of course, Will, I'm sure he'll get along with Waddles," Mabel said, before releasing them.
Dipper stepped forward, and gave both of them a warm smile. "I never thought we would end up as friends...you know, with me trying to kill you and all."
"It's water under the bridge now, Pine Tree," Bill reassured. "Are you sure the weirdness aura of this place is under control, so Will and I can leave?"
The brunette nodded. "Yes, I took care of it, and it'll be smooth sailing from here," He said, then looked at the blond shyly. "I'm probably going to miss you the most, Bill..."
Bill blushed madly, then stuttered. "Dipper, I..." He paused.
The male Guardian looked at him questionably.
Bill hesitated, his heart almost banging against his ribcage. "I...I'm going to miss you, too."
Dipper turned pink, then nodded in return.
On cue, they heard the sound of approaching wheels of a bus. The vehicle parked before them, and the door slid open. The Cipher twins took one last glance at Dipper and Mabel, before stepping into the bus, dragging their luggage with them.
After they took their seats, the bus began to move down the road. The two looked sadly out the window, as the town they once called home, began to fade in the distance.
"Should you have told them about your powers?" Will pointed out.
"Does it matter?" Bill countered. "We're officially leaving all this supernatural stuff behind, remember?"
"Yeah, you're right," Will sighed.
Afterwards, only the sound of the bus moving filled the silence between them, then Will spoke.
"Bill, now that we're leaving, where are we gonna go now? Where are we gonna stay?"
Bill breathed heavily. "I don't know," He admitted. "But, I'm sure we can figure it out, we always do. Plus, we're stronger now than we ever were."
Will stared, then a warm smile formed on his mouth. He gingerly lifted up a fist. "Demonic Twins?"
Bill laughed softly, then raised his own fist. "Demonic Twins."
They fist bumped, but on that very second, a flare of golden light exploded outside of the bus. Will and Bill looked out the back window, just in time to see a flaming form barreling out of the nearby woods. They were astonished to see, that it was Stan, though his golden eyes seemed monstrous.
"What's going on?" Will panicked.
Bill didn't say anything, as he noticed more forms bursting from the woods, and running to Stan's sides. It was the Guardians that had been trapped in the facility, and all their eyes glowed a golden colour. One person stepped in front of the group, it was Gideon, but Bill recognized the look in his eyes belonged to none other than Jill Cipher.
While possessing Gideon, Jill shot a command to the mindcontrolled people. "Stop that bus!"
Immediately, the group charged towards the moving vehicle. Bill quickly ran to the front of the bus.
"Floor it!" Bill shouted at the bus driver. "We're being chased!"
The bus driver turned, and was revealed to be Soos. "Hey, dudes."
"Mayor Soos, you're a bus driver!?" Will exclaimed.
"Occasionally," Soos said. "Like my DJ business, this is mostly a hobby, but bus drives usually calm me down. And after the stressful day I had, I really needed this..."
Just then, an arrow crashed through the back window, and embedded itself into a seat. Bill stared, and turned to Soos urgently.
"Can't this thing go any faster!?"
"Don't worry, dudes," Soos reassured. "I am 50% sure on what to do. You better hang on."
He turned, and pulled on the clutch. Immediately, the bus zoomed forward, and the twins almost lost their balance. The vehicle sped across the street, while the powerful beings pursued them.

Wildling
Blurb: Silas--a scavenger living off the ruins of humanity--has spent his entire life fighting tooth and nail to provide for himself and his crew. But when a scavenging run goes awry and he's snatched up by an android patrol, he finds himself thrown into a cage and priced to sell as a pet. And when a suitor comes calling, he fears the worst: that he'll be turned into a Domestic, a human lapdog brainwashed into total obedience. Instead, he discovers an equally disturbing truth: that the creatures who stole his world have created a videogame the likes of which Earth has never seen; a sprawling, game-like theme park where humans are the Avatars and androids are the players who control them. And to make matters worse, his android guide is as hopeless as they come, having gotten all of her previous Avatars killed in record time. So if Silas wants to regain his freedom, he'll not only have to fight his way through a world that was specifically designed to murder him in brutal fashion--he'll also have to convince his android guide that he should be the one calling the shots. FAQS: Q: Who are you, handsome stranger? A: I'm Kyle Kirrin, the author of Shadeslinger, book 1 of The Ripple System, published by Portal Books, and I write crunchy LitRPG. Q: What is Wildling? And is it complete? A: Wildling is a crunchy LitRPG mash up of Fantasy and Science Fiction. And yup, Wildling is already complete at 64 chapters, or about 120,000 thousand words. You're looking at something like a third draft here--it's fairly polished, but it hasn't been picked over by a copy editor yet nor has my developmental editor seen it. Q: Upload schedule? A: 5 initial chapters today (2/15/2021) and one chapter a day for the next month. After that I'll probably slow down to 2 or 3 chapters a week until the story is complete. Q: How crunchy is it? A: It's pretty crunchy. I'd put it on the same tier as Ascend/The Land/RSSG, but it might be a bit crunchier than those three? Q: Is this the first book in a series or a web novel or what? And what are your plans for it? A: It's currently a standalone with series potential. Full disclosure: this story may head the way of my publisher eventually, but will be available on RR for quite a while no matter what. Likely several months after it's complete with plenty of warning before/if it's taken down. Q: What kind of build does the MC create? A: Sword and board! Q: Crafting? A: Plenty! Crafting isn't as center stage as it is in The Way of the Shaman, but it's close. Q: Base building? A: Two fully separate, distinct bases, both of which play a major role in the story. Q: VRMMO? Portal? Reincarnation or what? A: This one's a bit tricky. Basically an advanced race has created a game-like world that closely resembles a theme park. Think Westworld but with copious amounts of loot. And the MC has to fight his way through that to earn his freedom. Q: Permadeath? A: Nope! The MC gets 3 lives to play through the entirety of the game world, and death is extremely punishing, but not fatal. Q: Harem? Or romance? A: No and no. Q: Cursing? Blood? A: Quite a bit of cursing, yeah. There's blood, too, but it's not a gory book by any means. Q: How can I support? A: Instead of a Patreon/donations etc, I'd ask that you consider giving my debut LitRPG Shadeslinger a chance. It's free on Kindle Unlimited and the audio is already out narrated by Travis Baldree. It's an epic fantasy VRMMO where the main character gets 3 days of exclusive access to a new game plus a snarky, talking axe to guide him through it in exchange for agreeing to become the target of a serverwide manhunt once the Head Start period ends. Q: How's it similar to Wildling? And how's it different? A. The crunch level is very similar, but Shadeslinger is a much lighter, epic fantasy take on the genre. It's also VRMMO, but without any real world components aside from the first chapter. The MC is very different--he comes off as a bit of a jerk early on and can take a bit to warm up to, especially before his backstory is revealed--but he's also got a talking axe that constantly puts him in his place. Shadeslinger's a much more humorous story in general, and it's a great deal more polished as well. Thanks for reading! I hope you enjoy Wildling!
