《The Snake In My Dreams》Ch. 8

Remus had woken up extra early to eat his roach cereal before Janus woke up. It had become a natural part of his routine. He had a lot on his mind, so it was no wonder that Janus walked in before he had finished.
"O-Oh! Remus," Janus said, suprised. Remus said nothing, not even looking up from his food. Janus swallowed, before continuing what he was doing.
Remus watched out of the corner of his eye as Janus opened the fridge and took out some ingredients. Eggs, flour, butter, milk.
"He's making pancakes." Remus thought.
He had promised Virgil that he would talk to Janus again, but would Janus want to talk to him? Remus had gone weeks without saying a word to him, would he still wanna be friends with someone like that?
Janus wasn't looking at him, so Remus finally fully turned his eyes to him.
Janus was mixing the ingredients idly, a tight frown on his face.
"C'mon, say something!" Remus scowled. "Anything!"
"That milk is expired."
Janus froze, eyes going wide. He looked back at Remus, and the two locked eyes for the first time in three weeks.
"...I-Is it now?" Janus mumbled, his shock never wavering.
"Yep, why do you think I'm eating cereal?" Remus chuckled to ease the tension. "You know I love it when it's chunky."
"Can..." Janus began, testing his boundaries. "Can you make me a cup of milk?"
"Sure." Remus snapped, and a glass of milk appeared in Janus' hands. Janus quietly thanked him, and poured it into his batter.
The silence resumed, and Remus couldn't stand for that.
"So," Remus began. "Janus, huh?"
Janus chuckled nervously. "It's not weird, right?"
"Not at all."
---
Janus finished making his pancakes and sat down in front of Remus. "So..." Remus began.

"So..."
"How have you been?" Remus asked. "Stupidstupidstupidstupid--"
"I've missed you." Janus admitted, cutting some of his pancake.
Remus watched as Janus blew gently on the pancake to cool it down, brushing some hair out of his face. He watched as his brow furrowed slightly at the taste, something was probably off with it. He watched as Janus shrugged and continued eating happily.
And oh my god, he was in love.
He loved him. He loved him. He loved him. He loved him--
"I've...missed you too." Remus gave him an awkward smile. He blushed the second it came out, and quickly stammered out the first thing that came to mind. "I-I've had no one to fuck me when I'm feeling lonely, after all!"
Remus wanted to die.
Janus chuckled softly, a fond smile tugging at his lips. "Of course." He said, taking another bite.
Remus couldn't believe Roman was right. There was no way he was I'm love with Janus!
But as he watched Janus eat, his heart kept screaming Janus' name over and over again, like a mantra.
"Um," Janus furrowed his brow. "Are you going to eat your cereal?"
Remus blinked, realizing he was staring. "Y-Yeah! Just savoring the taste!" He squawked. Janus didn't seem convinced, but nodded anyways.
An awkward silence followed, one Remus wasn't sure how to break. He took a bite of his cereal, contemplating what he should say next.
Janus didn't seem to be too bothered by the silence, Remus was about to question if he even noticed the silence until he spoke suddenly.
"What happened?" Janus asked.
Remus paused. Ah, yes, the question he had been dreading. Why exactly had Remus been avoiding Janus?
"I had an issue," Remus said. "I think I understand it better now."

"What was the issue?"
"I can't tell you."
"Why not?"
Because Remus didn't feel like confessing his newfound feelings quite yet.
"Because it's not the right time." Is what he said instead.
"When will it be the right time?"
"...I don't know."
"Okay,"
God, Remus loved him.
---
Janus wasn't sure what to expect when Roman invited him to the Imagination. His day had been going amazing so far, considering he actually heard Remus' voice again. He was hoping this encounter with the prince wouldn't ruin his day.
Janus reached the door, lifted up his hand to knock, but hesitated before he did. Did he really wanna go through with this? He didn't want anything to ruin his perfect day.
The door swung open, causing Janus to squawk and fling himself backwards.
"Oh, Janus!" Roman beamed. "I was just about to go looking for you! C'mon!" Roman grabbed one of his hands, and suddenly they were both sinking out.
They rose up in the Imagination. Janus gasped in awe. They appeared to be in a garden, so serene and beautiful that Janus felt as if he had walked into a painting.
"Wow..." He muttered, looking around.
"Beautiful, isn't it?" Roman asked, leaning down to whisper quietly in his ear. Janus was about to ask why he was whispering, when he saw it.
A snake. An adorable, yellow, snake. It was fast asleep in the grass.
"Oh my god." Janus gasped, eyes widening.
"His name is Anguis." Roman told him, smiling. Janus rolled his eyes.
"Anguis? Wow, real clever."
"I try." Roman shrugged, smirking playfully. "He's all yours."
"What?!" Janus gasped, looking back and forth between the snake and Roman. "But--why?"
"Shh, you'll wake him!" Roman whispered, laughing slightly. "Consider him an apology gift. I felt my apology was a bit...lackluster."
"If anyone should be apologizing, or giving you gifts, it's me." Janus told him. "You don't need to feel obligated to repay me. I'm the one who hurt you."
"And I returned the favor, didn't I?" Roman sighed, running a hand through his annoyingly perfect hair. "And you can't give him back. It's very rude to return a gift."
"As if I would leave you in charge of such an elegant creature." Janus scoffed. Roman chuckled.
It really was the perfect day.

Ars Magica
Our vision comes back into focus. Our eyes, while being able to perceive the immediate surroundings, still leave us with our minds uncomprehending towards what is actually occurring. Sure, there are definitive things that we can focus on, like the fact that we're either out upon the open sea or the open ocean, there not being much of a difference with no land in sight, as well as the fact that we appear to be upon a haphazardly constructed metal boat, whose seams are barely able to keep a hold of themselves in the crashing waves. However, that does not let us understand what exactly is causing the waves in the first place. If we were to rewind time, we'd find ourselves upon a calm sea under a peaceful sky with the only difference, being a small whirlpool that would be the precursor towards this uproar around the boat. Lightning flashes in the sky, with no clouds being near, and anyone actually manning the boat has either died towards the cause of the smashing tides in the first place, or are fighting amongst the flashes of lightning, all while trying not to become devoured, demolished, and utterly decimated by the beast roiling in the whirling waves. To better understand exactly what is happening here, there is one singular event that needs to be understood, that needs to be explained, and that is the arrival of a creature named Dave. Stepping back from current events and going towards this creature's first appearance in the world, we begin to hear the sound of water slowly dripping across rocky ground. The cavern is utterly silent except for this one constant, its cause feeding channels downwards, sloping towards cracks in the rubble along the floor from broken stalagmites and stalactites. And there, lying on top of something which had fallen over recently, judging from its cracks, is a person, the creature named Dave. His form is fast asleep, either from the impact or from an intoxication, judging from the smell upon its breath. A bright light suffuses into it for a second, giving life towards the pale skin, before it slowly dies down back to the comfortable black of the cave that it's within. Before this moment in time, Dave did not exist in the physical world. At least, not in the reality that he finds himself born into. We do not know whether or not his existence is simply a cosmic joke, or something that is being played out on purpose. All that we do know, is that one moment, the body was not in the cave, and simply formed in the next. The actual earliest time that we know Dave exists, is the interpolation of the memories of J-209, which we'll begin looking into shortly to gain context towards the coming narrative that is being written and hastily trying to keep itself written. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Warning: This story has several things which might turn its readers away. The first is that this story has shifting points of perspective. Don't worry about that previous sentence too much though, as the main character will always have a first person perspective associated with them. However, any other character from which we're viewing the story from will either be in third-person, as we are not necessarily in their shoes at the moment, or in first person, given that the narrator is an actual physical presence within the story. For the most part, chapters will be self-contained with their perspectives, so there will not be an abundance of switching perspectives within the same chapter. The most that an average reader would have to worry about is the fact that perspectives can switch between chapters. The second thing is that the main character is a bit on the 'special' side of things. He's not exactly mentally there most of the time, so there will be some times that his personality or his thoughts do not actively align with his actions. The third, and final thing of importance, is the fact that past the first couple of chapters, nothing has been planned in advance. There are arcs and plots that I want to do, want to implement, or have already been set into motion from our main character's introduction to the world, but the method that I use for my story writing and generating leads towards a bit more random chance being enabled. Basically...there's a lot of dice rolling behind the scenes. To not complicate the story further than its regular LitRPG elements, the rolls will not be publicly available. However, there will be knowledge within the author's notes on whether or not there were positive or negative critical rolls that had occurred within the chapter. You have been warned. Updates: Mondays & Fridays (Schedule permitting) Typical Chapter Length: (2,000-3,000)
