《The Whipping》Chapter 35

I gaped in shock at the mostly empty field in front of me, which was now only filled with about a dozen motionless bodies; the once green grass now coloured a scarlet red.
I watched as my father looked at me longingly, dropping his head in guilt, dissipating into the woods along with his army he had gathered.
There were many wolves who had refused to listen to my father, ignoring the fact that he had told them to stop, but Logan grabbed them by the throats, pinning them to the ground, taking care of them.
My father wasn't an Alpha, so they didn't have to listen, to them, he was just the one who had gathered them all for the fight, but they were all there willingly, agreeing it needed to be done. However, he was a member of the council, so had authority, and was someone some people looked up to and followed.
But, once a child had been hurt, a lot of them turned on their heels, immediately exiting the territory, knowing that things were about to turn ugly, and the fight would most likely end in death for them.
Heather cried behind me, cradling her only child to her chest. Her wails sent a shiver down my spine, and I turned, my brows furrowed, unsure of what to say or do.
Millie was dead.
Logan swallowed in pain, taking a limp Millie from his sister's arms, turning to carry her back towards the house, motioning for me to follow. However, before I did, I noticed a tall man make his way through the trees, taking in the scene in front of him, shaking his head in disapproval.
"Alpha James?" I asked in confusion, scowling at him.
At the sound of my voice, Logan turned, growling, jogging back over to me, still holding Millie close in his muscular arms.
"What are you doing here?" spat Logan, his eyes shifting to black.

"Alpha Logan, I mean no harm. I tried to stop Eliza's father, David, but he went against my orders. I came to stop him, but I see he has given up on his own. I can only apologise and let you know I had no part in this," spoke James calmly, holding his hands out in front of him.
Logan shook his head, growling. "He's done things he can't take back. I hope you'll let him know that the only reason I'm currently not ripping him limb from limb is because he's Eliza's father and I know she'd never forgive me. That is the only reason he is alive right now, but that doesn't mean I won't change my mind on allowing him to live."
James nodded in understanding. "As I said, he went against my orders, and I do not take that lightly. There is no doubt he will be kicked off the pack council and will be punished accordingly, but they are family friends of mine, so I'm sure you understand my predicament."
Logan rolled his eyes, huffing. "If I ever see him again, I will kill him without question. Let him know."
James nodded once, his gaze drifting to my shaking form. "I also wanted to check on Eliza. I am happy our pack could do what we could to help you escape, and I am relieved you are alive."
"Thank you," I whispered, sending James a small smile, grateful that he was so selfless.
"Did you need any help with cleaning up?" asked James, motioning to the scattered bodies.
"We can handle it," mumbled Logan, turning, walking back to the house.
James scanned the field, his eyes settling on his shocked nephew. "Theo, you've been ignoring my calls. Your mother is worried about you."
Theo shrugged. "I was too busy being unconscious and fighting for my life, sorry."
I huffed, shaking my head.

James raised his eyebrows questionably, waiting for Theo to explain.
"I'll explain another time. I'll be fine."
"Very well, are you going to be staying here or do you think you will come back to my pack? Your mother would appreciate knowing your whereabouts," asked James.
"I'll be staying here for a bit, but I'll come back and visit. Don't worry, I'll call my Mom," answered Theo, running his hands through his light brown hair in angst.
James nodded, turning to leave, offering me a smile. "Oh, Eliza. You should organise to meet with your mother. She had no part in this and she's really been missing you. I think your father and her have really been struggling with their relationship at the moment, so she could use your support."
I nodded, a frown forming at my lips. Through all of this drama, it had been hard to find time to think about family, but I missed my mother dearly. I wanted to see her, especially now that I had just escaped death a second time. I knew that life was never guaranteed, especially after witnessing the deaths of people close to me.
We all made our way back to the house, Heather pulling on a large shirt over her naked body, dropping to the ground by Millie's lifeless body, placed in the bed.
Tears dribbled down Heather's cheeks as she caressed Millie's forehead, kissing her gently. "You were all I had."
My eyes welled up with tears at Heather's words as Logan made his way over to me, pulling me to his chest as he silently cried, squeezing his eyes shut in pain. I reached up, stroking his cheeks as I gazed into his eyes, attempting to calm him down.
Suddenly, the pack doctor burst through the doors, taking in the scene and fumbling around with her equipment, ordering Emily and I to sit down on the bed, before noticing Millie, her hair now stained red with blood.
"Is she...?" whispered the pack doctor, causing Logan to nod sadly. The pack doctor furrowed her brows, exhaling heavily as she studied Millie and Heather. "I think it's best if they go somewhere more quiet so they can be alone."
"I want to see my Mother," cried Heather, her bottom lip quivering.
"I got it," mumbled Theo regretfully, carefully picking up Millie, taking Heather's hand, and walking out the bedroom.
Logan inhaled deeply, pinching the bridge of his nose as he attempted to calm himself. He was clearly in distress as he kneeled down in front of me, gently placing his palms on my knees. "I thought I'd lost you."
I swallowed, nodding my head. "I know, but you haven't."
"I love you," whispered Logan, caressing my cheek softly as the pack doctor unpacked her equipment, laying it all out on the bed.
"I love you too," I said, tears dribbling down my cheeks.
The pack doctor assessed Emily and I quickly, nodding to herself in approval. "They should be fine. They need plenty of rest and food, especially Emily. Other than that, they both should make a full recovery."
"Thank you," mumbled Logan as he opened the door for the doctor, closing it behind her.
"I really don't know how the two of you are still alive if I'm honest."
