Jeff, the colleague of your girlfriend, Polly, had phoned you, asking you to go to the hospital to pick up Polly. Seen as she worked at the hospital as a paramedic, that part wasn't weird, but you had never had to pick her up from work without it previously being planned between you.

When you arrived, Jeff told you that a little girl that they had been working on had passed away, and Polly had taken it badly. As she entered the car, she was silent, unlike her bubbly and talkative self and you could see the marks from the tears that had fallen down her cheeks. You turned off your car, needing to talk to her before driving her home as this was unlike her. Polly did become attached to patients and it would upset her if anything happened to them, which was somewhat common, but she never ended up in such a state.

"You okay, darling?" You smiled softly, not wanting to pry but knowing that she was a chatty woman and maybe talking it through was needed.

"No," she whispered. "I could have saved her. I should have saved her."

You gave her a sympathetic smile. In the phone call, Jeff had told you that the girl was already too far gone for either of them to do anything to safe her. Even though Polly would make it seem otherwise, she couldn't have done anything to save her, no matter how much she wanted to.

"You know that isn't true," you told her. "Sometimes things happen that you can't control and that can be really hard to accept. You can't always be the hero."

She sniffled a bit, trying to control her tears but a couple did escape from her eyes, trickling down her cheeks.

"I wanted to do more. I wish I could have done more," she croaked through the tears.

"I know," you said softly.

You wrapped your arms around her, the best you could due to being sat in a car, but it was a gesture that she needed.

"I love you Polly and you did everything you could to save her, but you're not a superhero, you can't save everyone and things don't always work out how we want them to," you assured her.

She nodded her head, wiping her eyes on the back of her hand.

"I love you too," she whispered.

"Let's get you home," you smiled before turning your car key in the ignition.
