《Haurutsuki: Beautiful Snow》11. Where We Say Goodbye

Miyuki lazily woke up that afternoon and found herself in a bed with no one else around. She got up, still feeling sleepy, and dragged herself out the room to check on Rin.
She got there to find Obito had fallen asleep while holding her hand. She couldn’t help but frown in sadness as she re-closed the door. She spotted Katsu sleeping on one of the couches in the living room. “Ooh! That smells so tasty!” she heard Ryuu’s voice say. She dragged her tired feet towards the kitchen, ‘And now?’
She had to stand still, blinking in confusion at what she saw inside. Lee and Ryuu were at the kitchen counter, excited to watch as Kakashi chopped up vegetables and threw them into a large pan on the stove beside him. For her, the most baffling part was that he was wearing Granny Fumiko's pink apron. “Hee might just have a gift there, ya wee little chef!” Lee said as he brought Kakashi a plate. They were so consumed by the aromas that they hadn’t noticed Miyuki standing there until she walked up to them and spoke. “Uhm, what’s going on?” The three turned, “Miyuki! You’re awake!” Ryuu exclaimed, excitedly running into her arms. She was taken aback, but welcomed it nevertheless, “Gees, you make it sound like I was dying.” She chuckled. He pulled away from the hug, “Can you blame me?? Since when do you take afternoon naps anyway? Never! You over did it again and passed out.” Miyuki pouted at him in response.
“Come take a look, you two. The silver-haired lad’s about to dish.” Lee said. Miyuki raised an intrigued eyebrow, “Why is he doing the cooking? And why does Katsu look like he passed out on the couch?” she asked as they approached. Lee laughed, “Lad’s a whimp. Got tired from our fishing trip.” He explained. “Oh… Wait, he actually went fishing!?” she deadpanned in disbelief. Ryuu nodded with a confident smile, “Yep. And Kakashi offered to cook it for lunch. He’s really great.” Ryuu grinned. “You think so?” Kakashi plainly asked as he added fish and sauce to a plate. Old man Lee then garnished it with parsley and put it aside to hold the next plate up.
Miyuki peered over Kakashi’s shoulder and looked into the pan’s remaining fish, “Fishing sure picked up this season, huh?” Kakashi’s eyebrow twitched from her soft voice being so near his ear. “The trick is going just before winter’s end. They’ve been coming earlier each year. I’ve been around long enough to know these things.” Lee proudly stated. She retracted from over Kakashi’s shoulder and he immediately eased, letting out a breath he hadn’t realized he’d been holding.

The others watched in awe as he finished setting the plates with Lee. Granny Fumiko walked in and complimented his cooking before taking three plates of it upstairs to the other guests. There was one fish each for Minato, Lee, and Fumiko. The rest were split in half, sharing one for Obito and Rin, Ryuu and Katsu, and Miyuki and Kakashi. Granny came back to make drinks, and Lee left to take Obito and Rin’s plate to them. Kakashi then raised the plate of head-half fish to Miyuki’s face, “River fish meuniere… Kakashi-style.”
Miyuki huffed and looked away, “I don’t eat seafood.” She cheekily replied. “Eh?” Kakashi said in confusion, before lowering the plate. “You live in a fishing village.” He added in puzzlement. “A poor one that barely gets any fish.” She pointed out. He sweat dropped. Ryuu laughed and grabbed Kakashi’s shoulder, “Sorry about my sister. She lives off rice, meat and practically all things sweet.” He emphasized. “Sweets…” Kakashi said, making a sour face. She stuck her tongue out at him before turning away again. He was taken aback and confused. “Oh, come on sis. Don’t be so mean. He was only trying to be nice.” Ryuu told her. “No, I/ he wasn’t.” They retorted in unison.
They looked at each other in surprise, and Ryuu couldn't help but laugh even more, “Hahaha! And me and Katsu are supposed to be the twins!” She giggled into her hand and Kakashi let out a small smirk beneath his mask.
Soon after everyone settled to eat, Miyuki having gotten a stew instead, Minato appeared and joined them all in Rin’s room. Rin was awake, and by the look of it, starving. Obito had refused to leave her side. Katsu was still sleepy, but Fumiko insisted he wake up and eat with everyone else. Obito sat on his chair next to Rin. Ryuu brought more stools in, and Kakashi sat on the bed’s edge next to Miyuki. While her brothers sat on the stools across her with Minato. Rin tried to get a peak of Kakashi’s face while he ate, but coincidentally Miyuki’s head got in the way. She and Rin hit it off well though. After all, she was grateful for having saved her life.
When the food was done, Katsu spoke up, “We probably won’t see each other again.” He said plainly. “Huh?” Team 7 all raised their heads. “Katsu!” Miyuki whisper-scolded. “What? It’s true.” He countered innocently. “She meant you didn’t have to tell them yet.” Ryuu said beside him. “Oh.” He replied, resuming to drink his tea. “Wait, you’re leaving?” Kakashi asked beside her. She glared to Katsu in response. “But I just woke up…” Rin trailed off. “Don’t be sad. We’re not going anywhere. We just won’t be here, that’s all.’’ Ryuu sympathetically explained. “You’re going back to the Mountain of Thunder.” Minato stated. The trio were surprised, but quickly turned serious.

Miyuki stared at the hands in her lap and clutched to her kimono as she spoke, “Our parents might return from a very important mission tonight. We need to resume our training and be home before then.” She explained. “I see… Well, I hope we get to meet again someday. Right, Team 7?” Minato smiled. “Right!” the three nodded. Team Haurutsuki smiled at them, “Arigato, Team 7.” She quietly replied.
It was nearly two hours later when the trio felt it was time to go. They left Rin in her room and greeted the rest at the door. “Hey, Miyuki... Can I ask you something?” Obito asked, nervously averting his gaze. “What is it, Obito?” Suddenly he lifted his goggles and abruptly leaned into her face. She instantly reddened, and found herself unable to breath.
He stared right into her dazzling eyes, slowly leaning in, on the tips of his toes, “Can you use your water powers on my eyes?” Her expression instantly sank. “What?” she asked in puzzlement.
Obito backed away, “Yeah. My eyes have been really irritating me ever since what happened to Rin. I keep feeling like there’s something in my eyes.” Miyuki sweat dropped, “You’re probably just adjusting to all the mist, Obito.” She said, adding a nervous chuckle. “Hmm… I guess you’re right. Thanks Miyuki!” he said, grabbing her into a hug. She was surprised. “Especially for saving Rin.” He whispered. Her smile saddened into his hug, ‘He must really like her… Like alot.’ With that, and a brief good bye with Minato and Kakashi, the trio walked off into the misty streets of the Hidden Mist Village.
As they said, they returned home and changed into their ninja attire before heading back down the base of the mountain to train. That night, after dinner with Kaiyo, everyone sat in her living room waiting for their parents and her husband to return home. Minutes became hours, and soon, the early hours of morning came. “They’re taking too long.” Miyuki said in slight concern. “Their last scroll said to expect them hours ago.” Katsu remembered. “They're usually late, but never this late.” Ryuu thought aloud. Then Kaiyo cleared her throat, grabbing their attention, “Alright, you three. I was going to wait until Daichi came home, but I’m just so excited, I have to tell you all.” Kaiyo brightly clapped. “What is it, Kaiyo-Sensei?” Katsu curiously inquired. “I’m having a baby!” she announced gleefully. The three gasped.
“Congratulations Lady Kaiyo!” Miyuki said, jumping from her chair and giving her a hug. The two brothers joined in, and the four all giggled in delight. “Can I name them? Can I? Please!” Ryuu excitedly begged. “Don’t be ridiculous Ryuu. It’s not your baby.” Miyuki scolded. “It might inherit my Orb Jutsu. Since both its parents have it too.” Katsu concluded. Suddenly a white orb bounced off Katsu’s nose. He held it in pain, “Ow! Kaiyo-Sensei!? What was-” she smiled down at him, “My future baby is not an ‘it’ my cynic student.” Miyuki and Ryuu burst out laughing, “And here I thought you grew out your spoilt attitude all you own!” Miyuki laughed. Katsu scoffed, “I feel offended.” And everyone laughed their worries away.
That morning, they woke up in Kaiyo’s bed. They had slept with her while waiting for their parent’s return. However, they never came. Kaiyo brought them breakfast in bed and assured them they would return soon. After breakfast, the three went to the base of the mountain and began sparring with each other. As Ryuu dodged his sister’s constant kicks and jabs, he asked, “You think they're still at the inn?” Miyuki then flipped back and avoided Katsu’s jump-in punch. “Well, Rin isn’t on her feet yet. So, maybe.” She replied before Katsu came in for the attack. “You want to go look?” Ryuu asked from the side. Katsu received a solid side kick from Miyuki, and skidded across the ground, “Ouch. Ouch. Ouch. What about mum and dad?” he asked as he got up, holding his aching arm. Miyuki panted slightly, “Man… I’m still out of it.” She panted out. Katsu flipped up to his feet and both her brothers came to check on her. She just needed to catch her breath before she straightened up and said, “Even if they did come back now. They’d first have to report back to the Mizukage. Besides, they know we're here this time of day. They'd be too tired to come find us. We could always come back before dinner.” Miyuki concluded. “That is true...” Katsu mused. “Then what are we waiting for? Let’s go!” Ryuu said, before excitedly running into the mist over the river.
Katsu looked to Miyuki. They both smiled and shook their heads, chasing after him.

Epoch: An NPC's Tale
Epoch is a slow-burn LitRPG/Gamelit novel that tells the story of Luke, later named Lucius—a natural inhabitant of the game-like realm of Elyssia where thousands upon thousands of detached, virtually unkillable entities known as the Players were suddenly introduced right after the dusk of the magnificent Age of Heroes. Shortly after the Players arrived, the balance of power in Elyssia instantly shifted. Kingdoms fell, wars were waged, alliances between races were made, and Lucius, after ten years of training in captivity, found himself being used as a pawn in a prophecy that he had no intention to fulfill. With aspirations and desires of his own, Lucius must find a way to cautiously adapt to the drastic changes in the very foundations of the realm after being sent 300 years into a future that was forever altered by the outcome of the war that his captors had lost and the Players won in a victory that resounded throughout the ages, all for a terrible price. Author's Note As an avid fan of the LitRPG genre myself, I wrote this novel with character progression, heavy Gamelit elements, and some degree of world-building in mind. If you like these, please feel free to give this novel a try. Oh, and the MC is also an NPC, in a sense. And wait, isn't this also an isekai story? Well, it's all a bit complicated to explain here. Maybe you should start reading now?
