《Lover's Day: Izuku Midoriya x Reader x Bakugou》Chapter 8: Cheaters

Homeroom was a blur. Most of the morning you spent with your head down on the desk. You were exhausted. Not to mention your stomach was in knots.
A gentle hand on your head suddenly interrupted your deep self-wallowing. "Are you okay?" You didn't have to open your eyes to recognize Midoriya's voice. You nodded.
"Just didn't sleep well I guess. And my stomach is a little upset." He didn't say anything else. You plopped your head back down for a few minutes. Fshhhh. Clink. You looked up to see a can of soda on your desk that Midoriya opened for you. You raised your eyebrows slightly in confusion.
"My mom always gives me ginger ale when my belly hurts." You propped up on one arm, flashing him a sleepy smile. "You're my hero."
"Shut up and sit down, Deku!" A loud voice shattered your ears. "Can't you see she has a headache?!" Well if you didn't before, you certainly had one now.
"AH! You're right, Kacchan! I'm sorry, F/N!" Izuku spluttered. You opened your mouth to defend him, but all that came out was, "It's ok, Izuku." The truth was you still felt put out by him. So you were okay with him suffering one single tiny indignity from Kacchan today. 'But just one...' You flashed Bakugou the mandatory warning glance.
Bakugou sat down in the empty chair in front of you and turned in your direction. He handed you something in a little bag. "What's this?" You asked, narrowing your eyes. Why was he not attempting to kill you after Monday's ordeal with him?
"Coffee." He replied. You sniffed the small package. The aroma was rich and dark with a hint of vanilla. "It's imported from France. It's usually expensive, but I was able to pull some strings." He bragged. 'It's totally poisoned...' You thought.
"Aren't we too young to drink coffee?" Izuku asked innocently.
"Only if you're immature." He scoffed snidely at him. 'Maybe two is okay...'
Midoriya turned his eyes down to his desk. You did the same. To be honest, you agreed with him. Even last night his mother made hot cocoa for the two of you. You thought that coffee was totally bitter by comparison. However, you couldn't simply reject such a fine gift. "How sophisticated!" You claimed, thinking he earned a small stroke to his ego. "Thank you, Kacchan!" He shrugged, returning to his seat near the back of the room. "I play to win." He said; more to Midoriya than to you. You let out a scornful "psh" with your lips. Its not like Kacchan had to worry about that. Midoriya was going to choose Uraraka anyway. You heaved another heavy sigh.

Lunch rolled around before you knew it. You sat down with Ochako, trying to be cordial and calm despite the twinges of jealousy clawing at the back of your throat. You noticed Iida and Izuku were nowhere to be found in the cafeteria. That was actually semi-fortunate since you needed to talk to her alone anyway. Though you weren't sure where to start.
"Did you ever finish that novel?" You asked her. She nodded. "Could I maybe borrow it?"
"Sure." She rustled through her book-bag and pulled it out for you. "I saw Bakugou give you something today. What was it?" She asked with curiosity.
"Oh. It was some fancy foreign coffee." You said, tossing her the small bundle.
"Ooh." She sniffed the package. "Wait, do you even like coffee?" She tilted her head at you. You observed at the surrounding vicinity before answering.
"No." You whispered. "But it would have been rude to say that. I figured at least my parents can drink it. Also didn't seem like a good decision to piss Bakugou off more after what happened the other day." She smiled.
"That's a smart idea."
"Have you gotten anything yet?" You questioned cautiously. You followed her finger pointing to the top of her head. "Those?" You asked. How did you not notice sooner? Two beautiful silver beaded hair-pins sat nestled in her locks. "Who?!"
"Iida." She answered. This caught you by surprise. 'Didn't he ask what I liked the other day?'
"Not Izuku?" You asked warily. 'Crap! That sounded really suspicious! Way to blab, F/N!'
"Deku? ...No. Why do you ask?" She inquired nervously, her eyes narrowing. Was she hiding something too? Did she know he was going to give her something? Was she trying to spare your feelings because she knew how you felt about him? No. That's ridiculous. It's not like you told anyone. 'Unless it's obvious.' You chewed your bottom lip apprehensively.
"Is he doing something for Lovers Day?" She inquired. You shrugged, playing dumb. You were fighting an internal battle. You craved Izuku's happiness like you craved the sunshine on a rainy weekend. But in doing so, you would lose any shot of happiness with him.
"Can I be honest with you, Ochako?"
"Sure you can, F/N. What is it?"

"Well I talked to both of them. Ida came up to me and asked what I think is romantic. And Izuku... well he asked me about what YOU like." You felt better getting it off your chest.
"What?" Her head fell to the side, making a disturbed face. You held your hands up in a clueless gesture.
"Sounds like they're playing both of you." A voice said. Oh. Right, headphone girl can hear pretty much everything. "Huh?" You asked in unison.
"Neither of them wants to lose so they are courting both of you so they have a better chance of winning. Sleazy move in my opinion."
You and Ochako looked at each other, mouths agape. "They wouldn't do that, would they?!"
"Of course not!" You answered, suddenly doubting your own words. 'But they both have been acting peculiar. Is that what they are hiding?'
"How will we know if that's what they're doing?" Ochako asked her helplessly.
"I dunno." Jirou waved her hand in apathetic dismissal. "Try to catch them in the act or something... If that's what they're up to, a good revenge plot would be to make them jealous."
"Catch them in the act..." Stroking your chin thoughtfully you claimed with confidence: "I think I have a way to find out for sure."
"Here you go, Izuku." You handed him Ochako's romance novel with such fraudulent geniality, you imagined even someone as thick as himself would have seen through it. 'Ugh. I'm not bitter. I'm NOT!'
"Thank you so much!" He praised, mirroring your good spirits. "I really appreciate it."
"No problem." Your tartness lightened slightly. "Er-well- See you later." You turned on your heel to walk away.
"W-Wait! Did you not want me to walk you home today?" He asked wistfully. "I wanted to make sure you were feeling better." A pang of guilt struck you with great force. 'There's no way he would do what Jirou said. He's too thoughtful. Maybe I should call this whole thing off...'
"Uh..." You paused, wanting to say yes. But you also had to think about Ochako's feelings. You couldn't ditch the strategy without her permission. "Sorry, Izuku. I made uh- study plans." 'Ah. Right. There's a test coming up. I should probably get around to that.'
"Oh." He replied, slightly crestfallen. "Ok then." He waved as you turned to leave.
"I'll text you later to let you know how I'm doing." You hollered to him. "But I'm feeling much better thanks to the drink you gave me." You felt that familiar tiny internal triumph when he smiled in response.
You ran to find Uraraka at the designated meeting place. The two of you proceeded to follow Midoriya as he walked through the school courtyard. You stealthily peered around the corner. "He's talking to Iida." You whispered.
"Well, they are friends. I'm sure this is just a misunderstanding." Ochako defended.
"You're probably right." You agreed. "We're being stupid. Let's g-" You were cut off as you saw Midoriya pull out Uraraka's novel from his backpack. "Oh no..."
"What?" Uraraka demanded, peeking around the corner with you.
'Don't do it...' You strained within, somehow believing if you willed it hard enough, the universe would force Midoriya to obey. You let out a quiet lament, sinking back against the wall as you saw the book fall into Iida's hands. Ochako opened her mouth, voicing your verbatim thoughts: "I can't believe they would do this!" She covered her mouth, appearing as if she wanted to cry. For the most fleeting instant, you felt the same. But it was quickly washed away by Jirou's proposition of vengeance.
"What do we do?" Ochako asked you tearfully. You paused, eyes ablaze.
"We make them jealous." Your voice was low, full of grave severity. She nodded, wiping her eyes with a finger.
"Right!" She huffed, making it clear that she was on the same page. "But who do we make them jealous with?"
One figure came into your mind, the plan now becoming as repulsive as it was delicious. "...I know exactly who."

Author's note: I love the idea of kingdom-building novels and think the genre has a lot to offer, but I don't think many authors do them very well. Here is my attempt. The novel has a strong focus on politics and kingdom building, with occasional action and a bit of humor. Have fun. Cover was made by MrZombie Updates three times a week.
