After eating breakfast my mom prepared for my pops and I, we decided to go to the restaurant to check up on it. Since I was out of school, I decided to accompany my dad. I wanted to let him know that I'm down for taking over the restaurant but never could find the right time to so maybe this would be a good opportunity to. We drove to the restaurant and was surprised to see a row of cops surrounding the empty restaurant. My pops and I got out the car quickly and approached the entrance that was broken. Windows was busted, glass on the floor, chairs on the floor, and tables were flipped over. I opened the busted glass door and tried to be careful from stepping on glass. The restaurant was ransacked and looked like it was broken into.
"Sir, are you the owner of this restaurant?",the officer said resting his hand on his gun on the side of his hip.
"Yes I am. Can you tell me what happen to my store? This is my restaurant",my dad said with a thick accent.
"Yes, we got a call from I assume one of your customers, saying this store looks like it got robbed. Unfortunately, we don't have any information on who the person who is behind it. But we are doing our best to collect any information."
"My family and I just came last night. We was in Dominican Republic for only two weeks. I can't believe this",my father said looking around putting his hand on his forehead.
"I'm sorry to hear that sir. I assure you we will get to the bottom of this. In the meantime, we will have to shut this place down until further notice."
My dad was real disappointed and i was too. I couldn't think of anyone that would do somethin like this. Although I wasn't the owner, I felt my dad's pain because this was our family's restaurant. Someone had to really have it out for my family to do something like this. The cops gathered up information and left. My father and i stayed at the broken restaurant and sat in silence.
"This doesn't make sense. I didn't know I had any enemies for them to sabotage my business",my dad complained.

"Hijo, you have a problem with anyone? I know sometimes you like to start trouble in school",he asked me. The only person i had a problem with was Khia's ex and I know he ain't that stupid to do something like this cause he know I'd give him a rude awakening. But the more I think about it, the more I'm starting to think maybe he could be the one behind this mess.
"No not that I know of pops",I lied. My pops didn't know about Khia's ex and I getting into a fight and me being in jail so I decided not to tell him nothing. This is just something I'm gonna have to handle on my own. Just then my phone ring and it was my boy Juan.
"You back in town didn't even tell me. Wasup?",he said once I answered.
"My fault man. I'm at the restaurant right now tryna figure out who broke into it."
"Damn someone broke into the restaurant?"
"Yea there's glass everywhere looks like a mess in here. Tables flipped over", I explained.
"Nobody was hurt though right?"
"Nah. Whenever they did it, it had to happen over night when we shut it down. Crazy thing is, my pops was here last night checking up on it and it was fine."
"You think it could be that fool Khia was datin?"
"That's what I'm thinking but dude a lawyer. He deals with the law and stuff. He ain't from the streets."
"Damn I can't think of nobody else. You only got into it with that dude.i would've showed up at his place and popped a cap in him."
"Nah Khia would never forgive me."
"She ain't gotta know."
"She gonna know cause she know I don't like the cat."
"Damn police was there?"
"Yeah we found them here. They said they gone do they beat to find the person that did it."
"Sorry to hear that man."
"It's cool. It's my pops that's torn. You know he loved that restaurant more than me",I said chuckling.
"True that. Since you back, I'm throwing you a kickback this Saturday so come through."

"You know I'm there."
"Ight man. Keep ya head up, they'll find the person",he said. We finished talking and I hung up. My pops passed me a broom as I helped clean the broken glass on the floor. It took us a minute to clean but once we were done, it was time for me to head to work. I got home and went to my room to change into a stripped woven shirt and black slacks. I put on my shoes and grabbed my keys to go to work. My dad must've told everyone the bees because once I got downstairs, my abuela sitting down with her hand to her chin.
"Bye mamá. I'm going to work",I kissed my mom who was cooking dinner and was out the door. My shift was a 3-11 shift and i was prayin God will give me strength to get through it. I looked at my phone and decided to call Khia but she didn't answer. She must've been at work like she told me. I haven't spoken to her all day and I was starting to miss her. Waking up in the mornings not being able to see her face was tough for me. Truth be told I was already starting to get used to her.
Once I parked my car, I got out and entered the three story building with a Red Bull in hand.
"Good afternoon Mr. Rodriguez. Welcome back", the front desk receptionist said smiling at me. She was a petite blonde hair lady that I knew was feeling me for a while.
"Good to be back Ms. Owen",I said smiling back and walking towards the elevator to the 3rd floor. I reached the 3rd floor and everyone greeted me so I greeted them back. I walked to my cubical and saw a small cake at my desk that read 'welcome back'.
"Alright which one of y'all did this?",i asked smiling.
"You know it had to be blonde over there or brunette. One of the two",my coworker Marcus said dapping me up and we hugged. He knew the females were always tryna come onto me
"Welcome back, Santiago",Kendra said hugging me. Kendra was a thick Caucasian girl that was overly friendly with all of the men here. She was the brunette Marcus was referring to.
"Thanks. You did this?"
"Yeah just something small to make you feel welcome",she flirted.
"That's nice of you. I appreciate it Kendra", I said. She had a plastic knife and announced for me to cut the cake and I did. She knew I liked red velvet.
"Mmm this cake is good",I said eating a bite.
"You know what else is good?",she said liking her finger.
"I don't want to know",I said before she could say anything. Marcus lied and told her the boss needed her for her to get away from me and he was a true lifesaver.
"How was the trip?", he asked me.
"The trip was great. You know it was babygirl's first time going to go see the fam. She was nervous and everyone liked her so I didn't know why",i explained.
"Even your moms? I know you was telling me how ya mom couldn't stand her."
"Yeah they cool now. She having genuine conversations with her now, they hug, I guess my mom realized that she wasn't going anywhere."
"That's wasup. How's Rico and them?"
"They cool. Romeo still gettin high as usual. But everyone is good."
"That's wasup. Looks like everything's going good for you."
"Not necessarily. I stopped by the restaurant and it's a mess over there. Someone broke into it and stuff."
"Damn. I was gonna go over there for lunch too",I saw his disappointment. Marcus was Dominican, he was mixed with Puerto Rican but loved the food. Sometimes him and I go over there to get a bite to eat for lunch.
"Yeah i know man",i said putting my hand to my head.
"That's crazy. Well keep ya head up,man",he said.
"Thanks",i said dapping before he left.
I logged into the computer and saw the stack of folders I had on the corner of my desk. This was gonna be one hell of a day I said to myself taking a sip of my Red Bull.

Madness Led by the Hands
‘Great, no… splendid. It was for naught.’ ‘Naught? Depends. If your desire is to send an army of killers our family’s way, yes indeed. If it’s plain survival you seek, then no.’ ‘They don’t coexist?’ ‘What… don’t tell me you’re still all groggy from the fall. Perhaps in novels, but real life is much tougher–––many more times a drag than anyone can possibly imagine. If dusty history is not a reliable teacher for you, then the pandemic surely took that place. At least that one has the advantage you needn’t be literate to savvy how reality always trumps imagination.’ ‘Whatever you say, whatever you say. So… what now?’ ‘Now? Isn’t it obvious? Now we shall survive. And live a good life.’ ‘Ohh… pretty much everything here has something against this little weird wish of ours. Might you consider?’ ‘Then pretty much everything here is a goner.’ ‘Hm, I don’t like the sound of that. Too much trouble, you see. I’d prefer laying low somewhere safe.’ ‘…nobody told you it’s mutually exclusive, no–––or did you forget about that too?’ ‘Fine, then I wish my future enemies all the best.’ ‘They are undeserving of your pity.’ ‘Of course not. That unlucky bunch won’t ever comprehend the reason behind their demise. Just let me smoke in peace and offer my condolence in advance.’ ‘Idem, let me study alchemy, unobstructed by all, if possible. This also includes you. By the way, are you sure you smoke to offer condolences? It seems like an excuse to me.’ ‘I-it is none. Plain truth, you see?’ ‘Seriously, why did I even ask...?’
