《Memories》XI - Things change.

Ah Si took out the wine from the cabinet, without glancing at the label and just poured himself a glass full. He didnt hesitate to take a long swig of the entire glass then started a refill. He was pissed.
He's been trying to get a hold of his friends now that he's in Shanghai and he finds out that they all went to Sanya. What the heck? He just got back from Sanya and now they're there? What kind of stupid is that?
He sighed heavily and took out his phone from his pocket. He was about to check on his emails when it flashed Meizuo's name on the screen.
He answered angrily, "What? You're looking for me now?"
Meizuo chuckled, "Ah Si, you cant be too clingy. That's so not you," he paused as if thinking of what he just said, "On second thought, it is so you."
"Cut the crap. What?" The wine forgotten, he spread-eagled himself on the large L-shaped sofa, His ruffled hair covering most of his face.
"We're all in Sanya, right now."
He scoffed. "So I was told."
"Can you come?"
"You do realize that I got back a day ago from Sanya and now you're telling me to go back again? Why?" He absently played with his beard, he really does need to shave, but he was too lazy to even care about his looks these days. He stopped caring about a lot of things. He shook his head, stopping his thoughts from going in that direction again.
Meizuo sighed. He knew Ah Si was going to get all prissy for leaving him behind. "It's important."
"I need to shave, that's important."
"Yes, you do. But you'll regret not coming here."
"I regret a lot of things."
"Well, I tried. If you're not coming, then..."
"I'll be on the first flight tomorrow morning."
Meziuo grinned on his phone. He knows Ah Si too much, he is still the same stubborn kid inside that god-be-damned deameanor.
Meizuo put down his phone and looked at Sanchai.

"He's coming, isnt he?" she said nervously, unconsciously crossing and uncrossing her legs.
He sighed. The head-strong girl whom he knew from a long time ago is still there beneath all that facade. He looked at her closely as she sat in one of the cushioned seats inside the library in the vast villa Ximen's family owned. The home was rarely used by their family, but is well maintained by their staff. The modern minimalist furnishings gave the place a wide open feel, almost cold and impersonal. Sanchai, with her petite frame, looks almost like a child against the interior backdrop. Her hair long, almost reaching her waist, slimmer almost a bit too skinny, her eyes holding a certain maturity in them, different from when he last saw her. But still the same, he thought. There's something different about her, a good kind of different.
"How have you been, Sanchai? Lei has told me what he knows. And done so far. I wish we were able to help as well. I have to admit, I am a bit hurt he had to hide it from us, but I understand his intentions. Lei has always been very protective of you. And I guess, we all were, without realizing it."
"Meizou, I dont know.. I just.. well.. I only knew what Lei and Li Zhen has told me until today.." She looked down at her hands, wringing them nervously. "After seeing you and Ximen... everything.. it came flooding in..everything that happened in Shanghai..I'm slowly processing it.. I dont even know if I want to.. its all so confusing for me right now.. a lot of unanswered questions.. I havent talked to my parents about it.. they dont know that I know now.. I just.. I cant.." she suddenly looked up and met his eyes, a mix of emotions are visible in the dark brown orbs. Interestingly, she still has the determined look of the fighter she once was, and always will be. "I am slowly finding myself now, Meizou. I am doing things for me now."
"But what about Ah Si?"

She paused. What she felt for him seemed like they froze in time. Stuck in that moment when she last saw him. The past few weeks, she has been purposely avoiding her feelings. She became greedy for her own benefit. She wanted to be her own person, no longer living in the shadow of her past, but someone wanting to be somebody. She knew she has changed, the walls around her heart has hardened, but deep down the young and naive Dong Sanchai is still there, afraid that if she opens up again, she'll only give in to the broken pieces. Daoming Si was more than just a name to her. She knew that now. But each time she brings herself to remember even a small memory of him, she always ends up in tears.
Yet now sitting here, talking about the past, has brought back a lot of pain and she doesnt know if she can deal with that. She had been broken once, she cant break again.
"I don't know. We parted ways. He asked for it. I obliged. I guess what happened to me after that was some wicked way of making me move on without remembering." she smiled at the irony.
"Have you even tried to see how he is doing now?"
"I'm sure he's doing just fine. He is Daoming Si afterall."
"Are you sure about that?"
She looked at him in the eye. "What are you trying to say?"
The door to the library softly opened and Ximen came in with Li Zhen in tow.
"Li Zhen?" she stood up, surprised to see her friend here. "What are you doing here?"
Li Zhen reached her for a hug and patted Sanchai's hair in place, "I guess this is their idea of a reunion."
Sanchai pulled her friend beside her to sit down on the sofa.
"Sanchai, Do you still remember your friends back in Shanghai?" Ximen asked, as he sat across them in one of the tufted chairs.
"I dont think I have a lot of friends in Shanghai."
"What about Xiao Yu?" Ximen carefully asked, knowing that Sanchai had always been wary of him and what once was a complicated relationship between him and her best friend.
Sanchai looked at him, confused. "Xiao Yu?" It took her a few minutes to process the name. "Oh my.. Of course! Oh god, how can I forget about my best friend! How is she? Does she know? Is she well?"
Ximen breathed a sigh of relief. "She's fine. She doesnt know. Not yet, anyway. I'm not sure what or how to tell her yet."
Meizou chuckled, "And there's something Ximen should also tell you."
"Hey!" Ximen looked at him in sudden alarm and annoyance.
Sanchai smiled, somehow having people who knew her then and now surrounding her with a sense of familiarity made her relax. She had been uneasy since she came here. But Ximen and Meizuo was their usual boisterous selves, their friendly banters helping her relax at least.
Li Zhen squeezed her hand, "Xi, I heard Ah Si will be coming. He doesnt know."
"I guess that makes two of us."
Lei entered the room holding a cup of what smelled like tea. "Ah Si called me, said he'll be here tomorrow afternoon at the latest." he sat on the other side of Sanchai. "Are you going to meet him?"
"I dont know. I dont need to."
Ximen and Meizuo stopped from their bickering. "What do you mean?"
"I...uhmmm.. I'm not sure If I want to meet him."
Lei blinked, confused at her answer. He wasnt expecting that from her. He was hoping that she wont remember her past so she wont look for Ah Si anymore. But here she was, her memories slowly coming back and yet she still doesnt want to meet Ah Si again.
"Why?"
"We parted ways. I know I'm being childish, but he let go. I let go. We both ended it."
Everyone in the room was confused and surprised at the attitude Sanchai was showing. This wasnt what the Sanchai they used to know would have said. She would have held on, no matter what.

Saga of the Jewels VOLUME ONE COMPLETE
Prefer to listen to rather than read Saga of the Jewels? I'm also releasing it as a free audibook serial podcast on iTunes here! Epic YA JRPG-influenced GameLit progression ensemble-cast steampunk romance fantasy! When Ryn’s hometown is destroyed, will he be able to gather together the twelve Primeval Jewels in order to defeat the evil Emperor and save the world of Mid? A fan novelization of an amazing Final Fantasy game that doesn’t actually exist, that currently releases at least one chapter a month. Epic in that this will be very long. “It’s a marathon, not a sprint!” (-Kandaj) YA in that this should be enjoyable to~13-year-olds and upwards. Some gore, some swearing, some sex, but nothing more than PG-13. JRPG-influenced / GameLit in that it uses lots of JRPG tropes, particularly from Final Fantasy. I’ve read a lot of fan Final Fantasy novelisations and you can basically think of this as a fan novelisation of its own Final Fantasy game that doesn’t actually exist as a game... Progression in that the characters level up over time (though not with visible litrpg stat boxes). They grow in ability through training and experience, gain new skills, individually and as a party (think Chrono Trigger) and spend time discussing and stratgeising about how to defeat their opponents. Main protagonist from book three would definitely be able to defeat himself from book one! Ensemble-cast because we've got quite the roster of misfits here. The first volume is all from the main protagonist's POV, but it starts dancing between his and different POVs thereafter. Steampunk in that we’ve also got airships, steam trains, pistols and ambiguous ‘amber bars’ that function a bit like artificial lights… Romance in that there is lots of shipping here, a few love triangles, and you may be kept guessing as to who will actually end up together... Fantasy in that we’re in a vaguely pre-modern setting. We’ve got swords, magic, dragons, dungeons, monsters, all that good stuff. * "This story captures that Final Fantasy quality perfectly. Kiddy but also grim. The characters are great... Severely underrated and needs more favorites/follows. I look forward to seeing how this story will unfold." -Gilgamesh9999 "Starting at the end and jumping backwards is not a writing style seen every day. I'll admit, I was a bit skeptical at first, but you've executed a fairly crazy idea very skillfully so far. Overall, a strong start to what could be a very strong story." -RandomFF.netUser "You definitely have my interest piqued. It'll be interesting to see where the story goes... It definitely has an 'old school Final Fantasy' type feel to it, which I appreciate...Good job! I am glad you are going into more details about the story you laid out in the prologue...of course the big burning question is 'You know they lose in the the first chapter, so how will they end up winning?' That of course, is the story you're writing...so we'll see how it goes! #Following." -KyleQuicksilver (quotes are from reviews on other sites) * If you enjoy it, don’t forget to boost Saga of the Jewels on topwebfiction.com!
