《Leather Jacket Girl (girlxgirl)》Chapter Twenty-Seven

A few days later, after my French lesson had ended, I decided that it was time for me to do some revision of key vocabulary. My grades in art and mathematics had been rising but French was where I had a steady row of Cs. I was surprised that I had done so well in math and was fairly sure it was a miracle that I had managed to get a B on the last exam that we had practiced in class. However, I supposed that hard work really did pay off. I hadn't been spending all that much time with Emmy recently, given that she seemed to have so many dates with Lois.
"Hey Phoebe," someone said nearby me.
I looked up from the bench to find that Oliver was stood there.
"Hey Oliver," I greeted him, with a warm smile.
"I thought I'd bring you a cupcake from the cafeteria," he told me, as he passed me one.
I smiled back at him, as I received the cupcake and took a bite out of the pink frosting. It was so good!
"Thank you," I told him.
That had been really sweet of him, actually. I realised just how much I needed something to cheer me up and I knew I could always depend on Oliver to help me out.
"How are you feeling?" he asked me.
By now, Oliver knew about the whole Emmy situation. As much as I didn't like to talk about it, I knew I could trust him.
"I'm just happy if Emmy is happy," I admitted.
Oliver nodded his head in understanding at that.
Of course, I wasn't sure if I really was happy. All I knew was that I wanted Emmy to be happy and if that ended up being with Lois then that was something I was going to have to deal with. I loved her more than anything and knew I would do anything for her. Sometimes you had to make sacrifices for your friends. This was a fairly significant sacrifice but I knew that I had to do this either way. It would be unkind to get in the way of a friend's happiness, especially when I knew that Emmy could be truly happy with Lois. She could be happy with her in ways that I couldn't make her be.

Kian soon wandered over to join us and I decided that I was probably going to have to take a break from studying for now. Conversations with my friends tended to be the number one reason for me to become distracted.
"Hey Kian," I greeted him with a warm smile.
"Hey," he replied. Kian had this expression of curiosity upon his face again, as if he was wondering whether I was alright. I wondered if Kian knew about my feelings for Emmy, too.
If he did, he didn't mention them.
"Oli, I brought us some books from the library," he stated.
"You're a star," Oliver said, as he took some of the books from Kian.
Kian was known for being an A-grade student across all of his classes. He even had a blog where he handed out tips to people that wanted them. I had to admit that I did admire his determination. Of all the people in our city, I could imagine that he was probably one of the highest grade students. I knew that he had dreams of one day getting into Oxford and nobody would interfere with Kian when he set his mind to something.
"You're welcome," Kian said.
Kian then turned his attention back to me.
"Are you okay, Phoebe?" he asked me.
"Huh? Yeah, I'm fine," I said.
Kian nodded, too. He looked less convinced than Oliver had done, though.
"Okay, well, I need to go and organise my bag for my next class. I have about five textbooks I need to return to the library too. Want to come with?" he asked the two of us.
I was simply grateful to have some friends that I could spend time with that separated me from the whole Emmy situation.

I decided to walk to the library with Kian and Oliver and we arrived there swiftly.
Kian and Oliver were both far taller than me, so I believed they had an unfair advantage. However, we arrived and Kian was able to return his books.
After that, the two of them sat down at a nearby table so they could begin to study some more.
I found that my brain already felt fairly fried from all of the studying I had done for French class before Oliver had walked on over.
I sat there and watched the two of them studying until Elijah joined the table.
I got up to go and talk with him outside, so that the two of us wouldn't end up getting yelled at by the librarian- Sarah.
"Hey Elijah. Not studying?" I asked him.
"You know I take my studies very seriously but I've already done them all today," Elijah told me, "I wanted to come and see how you were, actually. You haven't been around much the past few days."
"I've been fine," I said.
Mostly.
"Yeah? Are you sure? I just can't help but notice how all of this started to happen right after Emmy began to spend time with Lois," he told me.
"No," I said.
"No?" he asked.
"No. Everything is fine. Nothing changed," I said.
Elijah's eyes narrowed slightly at my statement, as though he wasn't convinced I was being entirely truthful. I couldn't blame him for that because I knew I was holding back a lot about how I felt.
"It's going to be alright, yeah?" he asked me.
Elijah tended to be the one person in our friend group that tried to keep the peace between the other members. There wasn't any anger between Emmy and I, though. At least, not yet. I didn't want there to be any, either.
"Yeah. It'll be fine," I said.
Elijah nodded his head in response.
"Okay, good. I'll see you in the next class, Phoebs," he told me, before he walked off again.
I was left wondering what I was going to do next. I couldn't keep avoiding Emmy.
