《Into the fire》Chapter Twenty Four

Wandas POV
It's been about, what? Another couple of weeks, maybe, since the beach. Give me a break. The weeks seem to blend together when you're going from one mission to the next and trying to sleep and eat in between.
So yeah. I'm kind of using that as the excuse as to why I haven't broken up with Lexi yet.
And it's mostly true. I'm not going to send her a test or just call her. I should do it in person.
It really has been difficult to find time alone with her. So I've been pushing it off. Though it's still a valid reason.
But that's also how we are going to try this triple date idea again with Nat, Spencer, Yelena, and Alex.
I definitely can't break up with her before as that would be mean and I can't while we're on the date for obvious reasons, so I'll have to wait until after.
I will break up with her.
I will.
Just.. not yet.
I'm not trying to lead her on or drag her along..
I just.. she's solid, you know? Like I know who she is and what she does and she's a good person. We're good together and it's healthy. There's no surprises.
I should be so very much in love with her.
But I'm not.
And I hate it.
What am I waiting for? Yelena to break up with Alex so Alex can come running to me which we both know wouldn't happen.
And so help me if I'm only hung up on her because she doesn't want me. Because there's a mystery there and I want to solve it, I want her to break down her walls for me.
But she won't. And I can't be upset with that.
She is for Yelena and they seem so good together.
So good that they're trying for another triple date.
And with the fact that my relationship is most definitely on the rocks and with the other two couples being incredibly happy.. well, it's not going to make this easier.
Oh well. We aren't going on some crazy day trip this time. We're just cooking at the compound and then watching some cheesy romantic comedy movies will drinking wine.
Which sounds really nice, actually.
I should seriously start to get ready as everyone should be here in.. oh great. Half an hour. I hardly have time for a shower but that's not going to stop me.
——————
I am amazing. I was out of that shower and down to help Nat in the kitchen before anyone showed up.
I also looked at the clock wrong in my sleepy haze and had an hour and a half to get ready, not just half an hour.
But those are minor details.
I'm helping get out some ingredients with Nat and I'm starting to question, "what are we making?"
Nat doesn't stop her movements but just answers as she goes, "umm.. great question. Spencer told me the name of it but I.. don't remember what it's called. She just gave me this list to make sure we had everything. Which I think were missing a few items she'll have to grab before she leaves."
"Oh. Well, if Spencer picked it out and she's helping us cook, then I don't really care what it is," I joke but I am so serious.
"I know. That girl can make anything taste like heaven," Nat agrees.
"Want to listen to some music while we wait for everyone?" I suggest.
Nat's answer is to have FRIDAY start playing a cooking playlist that I just know Spencer made.
"Spencer has a very wide range in taste of music," I start dancing, though.
Nat is also dancing, but is a little (fake) hurt, "how do you know this isn't my music?"
I give a 'really' look.
"Fine. It's Spencers."
And the next 20 minutes or so are spent with Nat and I dancing around the kitchen as we finish getting the food and wine ready. And yes, okay. We may have already opened the wine. Had a glass. Or two..
Don't judge us.
We're adults.
We're just starting the party early.
Just as we're getting into Heads Will Roll by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, the door is opened and Spencer is walking into the kitchen, immediately joining us in our dancing and singing.
"I love this song!" She shouts in between lyrics.
"I know, bub. This is your playlist!" Nat says back with laughter.
Spencer dances closer to her until they're face to face and Spencers hands are on Nats waist. She of course has to kiss her.
They're like teenagers.
"You know I love it even more when YOU sing this song, love." Spencer says this a little quieter but there was a lull in the music and I heard.
"You've sung for Spencer?"
Nats face goes red, "um.."
"Yes. And she's amazing! Her version of this song is" she does a chef kiss. "We went to the karaoke bar back home. And I may have been able to convince her to sing to me on a few other occasions." Spencer smirks before nibbling on Nats ear causing Nat to blush.
Okay. Where's Lexi?
"Ew. Why? Wanda is literally right there and you two still can't keep your hands to yoursleves," Yelena makes her presence and disgust known at the same time.
"Nope. Sorry, Lena, but I'm only kind of sorry," Spencer smiles. "Just come dance with us," Spencer opens her arms as an invitation and Yelena rolls her eyes but accepts the invitation.
"Whatever. Where's Lexi?" And Yelenas question brings one of my own.
"She's on her way. There was some traffic. Where's Alex?"

Yelenas entire demeanor changes. Her once fluid dance movements going stiff. But for only the briefest of moments.
"Uh, she couldn't come."
We all stop dancing. Nat asks FRIDAY to turn the music down.
"What? How come? Are you okay?" Nat fires questions at her. Better her than me.
"It's nothing. She just.. couldn't make it. Something came up." She shrugs. "We're fine. Just.. she had work."
Sounds familiar, no?
"Awe, I'm sorry, Yelena. That sucks. She seems to work a lot," Spencer comforts her.
"Yeah.. she does. But it's fine. She has to do her job," Yelena brushes it off.
"Still. I'm sure we'll be able to meet up at some point. At least I hope so. Starting to think she just doesn't want to meet me," Nat nudges Yelenas shoulder with hers getting her to smile.
And if only I could just.. read her mind. There has to be something else going on here.
She's still smiling, "no, that's not it. She wants to meet you." Her smile fades as she looks at the ground, "she actually wants to meet the whole family.."
"Well that's great! We can't wait to meet her. Which I'm sure we will. We understand she has to work," Spencer says rubbing Lenas back.
"Yeah.." Yelena starts.
But then, "sorry I'm late! There was an accident on the way here and I was stuck there for like an hour." Then Lexi places her bags down making her way over, pulling me to her in order to kiss me.
"Hope I didn't miss anything?" She asks looking around. I know she notices Alex's absence and is going to say something. So I gently grab her arm to get her attention and just shake my head.
Although I do plan on talking to Lena after this. I think Nat and Spencer will, too.
"Alright! Let's get to cooking! I'm starving!" Spencer says, grabbing Nats hand and half dragging her to the kitchen.
We all follow suit.
Spencer gives us each a roll in order to help make the dish and we keep the music going as we do.
We are actually a really fun group to hang out with; dancing and singing as we slice veggies or make dough or pour more wine.
And there's moments, just a few Yelena let's escape, when she thinks no one is looking, where her smile fades.
And my heart breaks for her. She seems to really like Alex and I know her not being here is hurting her.
I almost can't wait for this to be done so we can talk to her again.
But for now, I will enjoy this amazing smelling food with my third glass of wine while we watch Made of Honor.
It's actually a pretty cute movie. And it's just the start. Spencer says she has a few for us to watch along with some snacks for when we're hungry again. (Of course she did. I should have known by the amount of bags she brought in.)
But it's a good time. Despite Alex not being here, Yelena seems to (eventually) let herself enjoy the triple date? Can we call it that anymore?
Anyway. It might be the wine talking.
I did stop after my third.. okay fourth glass. But I'm not the only one and we're all having a good time.
"Okay, did anyone else root for the boyfriend though?" Lexi asks.
"I mean.. yes and no. You've got to root for the best friend, though! Some people realize they love some one a little too late. Not everyone has their perfect person perfect timing," and then she kisses Nat.
I swear..
"Yeah whatever you say, Spence. What's the next movie you have for us?" Yelena says, reaching for more wine. I'm not sure how many she's had. But hey, I've had 4? I think.. so I can't really say much.
Don't worry, I'm drinking water now. Spencer insisted.
Yeah.. I know. Lexi is pretty gone too. Otherwise I'm sure she would have. Spencer is just really caring.
"Um.." she reaches over to a bag and pulls out a few dvds. "I have She's the Man, 27 Dresses.." she doesn't get to say any others.
"Ooh! 27 Dresses! I love that movie!" Lexi says.
Laughing, "okay, 27 Dresses it is!" Spencer says, going to get up to put the dvd in.
"Don't even bother. I know Nat won't let you move," Yelena says taking the movie from Spencer.
"Thanks, Lena!" Spencer sings.
"Yeah, yeah."
She puts the movie in and we fall right back into it, reaching for snacks whenever we're so inclined.
And I want to watch another one with them, but I also don't.
"Babe, I'm sorry but I should probably go," Lexi breaks my train of thought.
"Oh. Okay. Are you okay?" I figured she'd stay over..
"Yes, of course. I had a great time. And the food was delicious. Thank you, Spencer."
Spencer waves it off, "we all helped make it."
Then Lexi turns back to me, "I'm sorry, I just have a meeting in the morning I should really be ready for. And I know if I stay here, that is so not happening.." she smiles as she leans down to kiss me, I return the smile and the kiss.
"Okay, babe. Let me at least walk you out." I stand up and walk her out to her car.
With her gone, I have a determination to talk to Yelena.
She's going through something and I don't want her to have to go through it alone.

Rei tells her it's not that simple... Net's playstyle is void. It's an enigma. It's chess that should not exist, and should physically not be possible to play. It goes against all logic, and it's power is not something that can be measured in numbers. It's something that would "absolutely not work" in a professional setting. Anasthese attends Rei's funeral as a last rite before setting off for Japan, bound towards the disintegrating Futenma Shintenkan Highschool chessclub, of which there are only two members left: Mukuro and Net. She has to see it with her own eyes, a playstyle that Rei lost to... And as Anasthese stays for the long-term, various misadventures are started at Futenma High, including rebuildung the club, Anasthese's "Royal Guards" (four girls dedicated to serving Anasthese and helping challenge Rei) coming to take her back to America, and unexpected guests gracing the local Sports Meet chess scene. The Dreamside Road
Five years after the world fell into chaos, a treasure of artifacts is up for grabs. The relics of the Dreamside Road offer a power that could help rebuild or annihilate what remains. Orson Gregory is an adventurer for hire, but hunts this treasure for answers, not glory. Enoa Cloud’s late aunt helped hide the Dreamside Road, but following in her aunt’s supernatural tradition offers her as much peril as power. Together, Orson and Enoa battle a magic-obsessed militia, clash with a host of rivals, and face constant adventure on their journey to find the Dreamside Road. *Updates Monday and Friday The Dreamside Road is now on TopWebFiction! Vote so people know this exists. _____________________________________ NOTE: The Progression tag applies specifically to Enoa. Also, fair warning, that element doesn't enter the story until she begins her studies. Content: Main characters range in age from teenagers to people in their thirties and older, but it will not contain gratuitous violence or explicit sexual content. It also won’t shy away from implication, anything to make this story and its world feel more real. Characters will freely allude to potentially triggering topics, including living with a disability, facing terminal illness, coping with trauma, surviving societal destabilization, and the consequences of bigotry. At its most intense, the Dreamside Road is a hard PG-13. Worldbuilding: This is not a story with a lot of early exposition scenes, conveniently explaining ‘magic systems’ and political dynamics. Readers will learn, progressively, as the characters do. This story/world has a ‘magic system’, or rather, a set of systems, but the effort to quantify and understand the truth of the setting plays a role in the backstory, as well as in some character motivations. In that same vein, not every character has a firm grasp on the nature of their world, and not every piece of dialog from every character should be taken as entirely truthful Worldbuilding. Also, this isn't the softest Sci-fi. There are at least some basic explanations given for various elements, but Royal Road does not give me a spectrum to choose from. Given the choice between hard and soft, let's just say The Dreamside Road won't be cited in any college Physics papers. Setting and Theme: The Dreamside Road walks the line between fantasy and science fiction and deals with finding one’s place in a changing world. Many of the characters in this story are United States natives and the story begins in the United States, my homeland. However, knowledge or interest in this country is not necessary to understand the story, especially as it progresses. Also, as this is a novel that deals with societal collapse and while that damage may be widespread, in story, I don’t want to overstep and critique the culture of others’ unless I have particular knowledge in a given area. Ultimately, the Dreamside Road is American in the same way Harry Potter is English, fantasies that do not have a full secondary world, but with enough original elements to fully diverge the setting from our the real world.
