《Rebuilding (COMPLETE)》*Episode 23 (6)

The Naberrie family was something of an urban legend in Lake Country. They were thought of well, but many questions surrounded its members. They were quite strange, if not the kindest people one had ever met.
Ruwee and Jobal Naberrie were the heads of the Naberrie bloodline. They had humble beginnings, but as their two daughters grew up, they found themselves doing well off. Residents of Lake Country rarely saw them anymore, as they had moved permanently to a vacation house on the far side of the lake. They would visit their daughters, the in-laws, and their grandchildren regularly and were excluded from the odd perception of the Naberries. Old retired folk were hardly strange.
The grandchildren in question, Luke and Leia, were adored by practically the whole community. No one had met them until they were well past the toddler stage, but they made friends easily with the other children. Their parents homeschooled them, but Luke and Leia could be seen waiting around the public schools for their friends to get out of class after school was over. They had been raised well; they treated adults with respect and had good manners. Some argued that parents who could raise such wonderful children as the twins didn't deserve the doubt others had of them, but more of that later.
As they got older, their reputation only grew. Luke and Leia Naberrie were known for sticking up for the little kids. They would walk children home from school to make sure they weren't hurt on the way and protect them when necessary. In fact, if they heard about any bullies, even if the bully was a friend of theirs, the Naberrie twins made sure that problem went away. Local police had caught them beating up fully grown adults because they had been preying on small children. They had never been arrested, but certain police officers had visited the Naberrie household so often that they were friends with their uncle, who usually answered the door.
The only people the twins didn't respect other than bullies were Imperials. If a stormtrooper patrol ever passed through town, Luke and Leia quickly grew annoyed and angry. This didn't often happen, though. Strangely, whenever stormtroopers visited, their speeders kept breaking down spontaneously. When asked, the police said they didn't know who or what was sabotaging the speeders, but they could be seen winking at the twins a minute later. My doctor says I have selective blindness, they said. There's no cure, they said.
Their aunt, Sola, was the least strange of the adults. She was home more often than her younger sister, and people knew her the longest. It wasn't her fault her sister married a strange man and had children, but she unreservedly associated with them. Sola was included in the parent-teacher conferences held every so often, and she often engaged by asking what the public schools were teaching at the time. It became evident that she was the primary educator at the Naberrie household, and teachers were more than happy to discuss their curriculum with her. The parents were less excited, but they shared the highs and lows of parenting with her, which she could also relate to. Sometimes, it seemed that Sola was the cornerstone of the Naberrie family.
Obi-Wan, the uncle of the twins, was wrapped in mystery. Supposedly, he was the father's brother, but people noticed they didn't exactly look alike. The two brothers lived in the Core worlds growing up (though they never specified which one) and had almost no family. He spoke only of a father, a man named Qui-Gon, but he was dead and nowhere to be found. Strangely enough, neither brother had a last name either. Whenever asked, they both identified as a Naberrie. This made sense for the father, who had married into the family, but no one understood why Obi-Wan had taken the name as well.

He had always been more of a reserved fellow. He was kind and caring, but he was not loud or extroverted. He was always willing to help, though. Once he started engaging with the community, about the same time the twins had started making friends, he was the go-to if a family needed an extra set of hands for a construction project or something similar. It was in this way that Lake Country found out that Obi-Wan was absolutely shredded.
This sparked rumors about what his occupation might be. Obi-Wan didn't work anywhere, not even in a mine or a workshop where his muscles could be explained. The twins said he was their teacher, but what was he teaching them? Certainly not what Sola was teaching them, but perhaps he was their fitness trainer? The twins were abnormally strong, but that didn't quite explain it in the minds of the gossips. Maybe he was a secret martial artist, or a fitness model, or something equally as ridiculous.
People at the bar knew him quite well, actually. He never turned down an opportunity to grab a drink with a neighbor or friend, and he was quite good at listening to the woes and worries of others. He never seemed to get drunk, though, at least not in the way other people got drunk. Obi-Wan Naberrie had an incredibly high alcohol tolerance.
Some people thought perhaps Obi-Wan had married Sola, but this rumor was debunked quickly. Both of them were quite single, as they assured other parents. The two were very good friends and united over their responsibility for the twins, but it became clear that they were not romantically involved.
The other sister, Padmé, was the mother of the twins and absent very often. In fact, Padmé had started disappearing with no explanation when she turned thirteen. None of her family members bothered to explain her absences then and only provided vague answers now. She worked for a galactic organization, and her duties took her off-world nearly all the time. Lake Country knew many things about Obi-Wan and tried to piece them together, but Padmé's strangeness came from the fact that they knew almost nothing and rarely saw her.
Friends of the twins knew Padmé Naberrie as the wise and loving mother Luke and Leia respected so much. Whenever she was home, her word was law, and even the other adults would hand her the reigns. Her authority went unquestioned in the Naberrie household, although visitors soon realized why. The system the family set up under her was a well-oiled machine, running smoothly and effectively when a task was set to them. It made them wonder what she did for her job. Maybe it was some type of management, which would explain why she was so good at managing her family of six.
Then there was Anakin. Anakin Naberrie, the father to the twins and easily the oddest member of the family, if not the oddest person in Lake Country. Like Obi-Wan, he had no family except for his brother, the father Obi-Wan sometimes spoke of, as well as his mother and little sister, both of whom were also dead.
For a time, he had also been unknown to the rest of the community. He started getting to know people when the twins branched out but was less reserved than his brother. Everything from his height to his strange hair threw off the other residents of Lake Country. He was pleasant and likable but startling nonetheless. He was also just as strong as Obi-Wan, leading others to believe that whatever made him so strong also bulked up Anakin.

Then, a few years after he had introduced himself to the neighbors, he started disappearing for longer periods of time than his wife. His brother and sister-in-law said that he had been employed by the same organization Padmé worked for as a security official. This encouraged the working theory that Anakin and Obi-Wan were martial artists in disguise, although it was never confirmed. Just like Padmé, he never talked about his work unless it was in vague terms.
Kids in the area knew him as the 'cool dad.' If the twins wanted to hang out or stay up late, Anakin would drop them off or pick them up. He volunteered to chaperone events when possible, and he was easily the most chill chaperone at any given function. Anakin could relate to teenagers very well, which only increased his popularity among the youth, but he also knew when to step back and let kids be kids. Everyone under the age of eighteen knew that Mr. Naberrie knew how to party. This came as a relief to other parents because at least someone kept an eye on their hormonal teenagers.
Although the adults weren't nearly as actionable as the twins were in their dislike for the Empire, it was clear that the entire family despised it. Any one of them could be coaxed into a conversation about what they thought was the worst part of the Empire. They talked about the slavery of aliens (non-humans), the oppression of poor, undefendable systems, the non-democratic nature of the Imperial Senate (mostly Padmé spoke to this issue), and the corruption of the Empire's legislators, officers, delegates, business partners, and leadership. It seemed that Anakin and Padmé's work off-world taught them a lot about the inner workings of the Empire.
It didn't take long before the residents of Lake Country realized that all four parents had taught Luke and Leia to dislike the Empire. When local police would escort Luke and Leia home (usually for beating up a criminal or a thief), Obi-Wan would scold them for using violence to solve the issue when that was the job of the police. When they escorted them home for sabotaging stormtroopers (which didn't often happen, thanks to the officers' selective blindness), Obi-Wan would only scold them for getting caught. Even Sola, who was regarded as the sanest of the Naberrie adults, was rather opinionated about the Empire.
Aside from the people who made up the family, Anakin and Padmé's marriage was the most confusing aspect. It was getting rarer and rarer to see them in the same place together since they both worked so often. Not only that, but it was clear to anyone with eyes that they were complete opposites. Anakin was a casual, rough man who was as wild as his hair suggested. Padmé was practically a queen, elegant and poised and quite serious when she wanted to be. How two polarized people could fall in love was beyond most Lake Country residents, and some wondered if they had considered a divorce before.
Needless to say, questions surrounded the entire family constantly. There were so many secrets and unknowns about them, and rumors flew around about different theories to explain their strange traits. Answers seldom rose, and the more questions someone had about one person, the more likely that person was unable to be reached. In fact, the only time anyone could count on all six members of the family being present was on the twins' birthday.
Even Anakin and Padmé made sure to be home to celebrate their children. Every year, the Naberrie family would go to the same restaurant for dinner. It became such a notable occasion that some people made plans to visit the restaurant that night just to see them. Luke and Leia's birthday became something of a community-wide event where interested folk would take advantage of the opportunity to catch up with them and their parents. Everyone wanted to see how the family was doing and if the evidence lined up with any of their theories.
One rumor was always dispelled every year: Anakin and Padmé were absolutely in love. In fact, they usually put other couples to shame with their teasing and flirting. Despite having teenage children, meaning they had to be married for at least sixteen years by now, if not longer, they still seemed to have the 'just-married' air about them. They could have been twenty for all an observer would know. Their opposite traits seemed to make the relationship even more adorable rather than dysfunctional.
In fact, the entire family seemed to get along. Obi-Wan and Anakin would banter often, and Obi-Wan would smile and laugh more around his brother than he did otherwise. The twins would tell their parents stories, and Anakin and Padmé would listen and chime in at the perfect times. No other parents seemed to connect with their teenage children quite as well as they did. Sola would sit back and watch, presumedly taking a break from trying to manage the twins. Despite their regular absences, Anakin and Padmé could parent well and were more than happy to give their siblings a break from their responsibility.
Everyone would stop by their table, visit with their closest friends in the family, and wish the twins a happy birthday. The restaurant staff was so accustomed to hosting the Naberries for Luke and Leia's birthday that they already had a table waiting for them before they stepped in the door. They offered a free dessert for people who came in on their birthdays, but the twins got an entire cake to share with their family and friends. Everyone would stand around and celebrate, cheering as Luke and Leia blew out the candles together every single year since they turned seven. Their sixteenth birthday was the tenth year of this tradition. To celebrate the occasion, the master chef made a special sweet sixteen cake for them and came out to present it to the family himself. The entire restaurant sang to them off-key, making for an out-of-tune but very entertaining choir.
Maybe the Naberrie family was strange and questionable, but no one could say that they didn't love each other more than life itself. Besides, the cake was so good that most of their questions were forgotten anyway.
