《The Boy with the Chestnut Brown Hair》CHAPTER 25

We arrived at Vino's at almost one in the morning. We had the house to ourselves since Vino's parents and his sister were still in Australia. Their house helpers were on vacation too.
It had been a long night but everyone was still pumping with so much energy, especially Lily and Brian. The latter was about to open a bottle of beer, but I told him that I want to get changed first. I grabbed my backpack before heading to the nearest bathroom.
When I returned to the living room in my blue camisole and shorts, I found them all still in their party clothes. Jeff and Vino had both ditched their jackets, and the latter had removed his tie too. Lily and Bianca were still in their dresses but were barefoot. They all looked at me funny.
"Sleeping so soon?" Brian joked as he helped himself to a mug of beer.
"Very funny," I replied as I squeezed myself between Jeff and Lily.
I took the time to look at each of them. My heart was swelling with pure happiness and gratitude because I got to spend time with my favorite bunch. It had been more than two years since we had been complete like this.
We talked about our party and which part we enjoyed the most.
"I loved the presentation that Jeff made. It brings back so many memories," Lily answered before I got to say it first.
"Yeah, I know we were going to rock as usual," Miguel chuckled, giving Lily a high-five. "But Jeff's video...that's another level of awesome."
I turned to Jeff who gave us a modest smile. "I didn't know you have a candid photo of me," I mumbled.
"I have lots and lots of photos of everyone like what Lily and Brian had said." Jeff laughed before looking at me.
"I loved the presentation too, but I liked the food as well," Vino added, making me break eye contact with Jeff. "The pasta was so good."
Miguel nodded his head in approval and said, "Great choice of caterer, Kane and Bianx." He reached for his mug of beer which I noted was already his second one. I glanced at mine and I had only consumed half of mine.

"Hey, why don't we play a game of truth? This time, no dares and just truth," Brian suggested.
"I'm in," Lily was quick to agree.
If I was being honest, I would think that these two had planned this game already.
Brian spun an empty bottle and it pointed at Lily. He asked her who she thinks is the best-dressed male during the party.
"No doubt it's Supervino," she answered, quickly as if she wanted to say, 'duh'. "Look how dapper he looked in his suit."
"Yeah, and I think it's also because of how you dress up on normal days," Bianca added. "Miguel often wear dress shirts, so seeing him in a suit doesn't look much different. Jeff dresses more like a boy-next-door while Vino and Brian look more like the bad boys."
I smiled. Every time our conversation had something to do with clothes, Bianca always had a lot to say. But I agreed with everything she just said.
"Excuse me?" Brian asked in a high voice. "I prefer to be called a trendsetter."
"I appreciate your outfit for tonight and how you showed us a bit of your chest in purpose." Lily commented, pointing to Brian's unbuttoned shirt. "It's just, you know, it's too provocative for my liking."
"That's why he's awarded as a big flirt," Bianca remarked, laughing, and Lily did too, prompting Brian to make faces at them.
"No, he's a trendsetter, girls," Miguel disagreed. "And look at his necklace. That's worth something."
"Gosh, Don Brian was showcasing his wealth in front of the whole class," Lily joked. She reached for the bottle and spun it.
Brian playfully pushed Lily, and I had to move closer to Jeff when Lily started hitting Brian in the arm. I glanced at Vino, who was already watching me, and I smiled at him. It seemed like he isn't in the mood to join the teasing.
"He had to look good for his exes," Jeff chimed in, moving a few inches to give me some more space.
"What exes?" Brian asked, feigning innocence. "I don't have an ex from our class."
The bottle stopped at Jeff and everyone's attention was diverted towards him.
"Okay, I got a good one," Lily grinned and I could see the glint in her eyes. "Was there anyone you used to like among the three of us?"

I reached for my beer mug as we all waited for Jeff to answer.
He snorted before mumbling, "Kane."
"What?" I asked in disbelief, holding my mug near my lips.
Bianca and Brian asked at the same time too.
"You liked Kane?" Lily asked, her voice an octave higher. "How come we never knew?"
"I don't remember you doing something that will make us think that you like her," Bianca added.
Exactly my thought.
I placed my mug back on the table and looked at Jeff.
"Well, actually, I did. But everyone was so focused on Vino that's why nobody noticed. Not even Kane," he replied.
I tried to remember how we used to be back in high school. Jeff had always been a good friend. He was always ready to lend a hand when I needed help, but I never thought he was nice to me because he liked me. Besides, he was nice to everyone.
Vino cleared his throat, which prompted me to glance at him.
I wonder if he knew about this.
"I used to really, really like Kane in freshman and sophomore year," Jeff explained. He kept on talking about me in the third person like I wasn't even sitting next to him. "We all knew Vino likes her and he also found out that I like her."
"Whoa, whoa," Brian interrupted him, holding up his hands. He gave an accusing look at Vino before asking, "You did? And you didn't tell us?"
Miguel chuckled, looking amused at how things were unfolding. I glanced at his beer mug and according to it, he wasn't only amused. He was also tipsy.
"I can't believe this," Lily gushed. "Why didn't you say anything?"
"I figured it's not something Jeff wants everyone to know," Vino answered.
I smiled, remembering how good Vino was in keeping secrets. He always stuck with their bro code.
"How did you react when you found out about it?" Brian asked.
Vino shook his head. "That's too many questions already, and it's not even my turn yet."
"Did you two argue before?" Bianca asked Jeff instead.
I took a deep breath and gripped my knees, waiting for Jeff's response.
His eyes darted to Vino before looking back at Bianca who was sitting beside the latter. He smiled at her and mumbled, "No, of course, we didn't."
I knew I should be relieved that Jeff said they didn't argue. But I couldn't shake off the way he glanced at Vino and how the latter had relaxed his shoulders after Jeff answered. Their actions were telling me a different story. I didn't know what happened then and I wasn't sure I want to find out what it was.
"Of course, they didn't, Bianx. We had a deal not to fight over a girl," Miguel chimed in.
"And not to pursue the same girl," Brian added. "But this is still surprising."
"Alright, enough about us," Jeff decided. "That's a lot of questions for one round."
We spun the bottle a couple more times, but it never pointed at Vino and me. I had a feeling it was what Brian wanted to happen, and he was already exasperated, so he suggested stopping the game.
"When are you going back to Australia? Are you planning to work there?" Miguel asked before refilling his mug.
Vino cleared his throat before answering, "I'm not sure yet. I want to stay here, but I'm still looking for more reasons to stay."
Brian coughed dramatically and glanced at me before asking, "Does the reason need to be a person?"
If he needs a reason, isn't his girlfriend enough to be a reason for him to stay?
I was halfway through my second mug, and my eyes were beginning to feel heavy. It might be the beer, or I was just tired from the party.
"I think I'm going to bed now," I announced, standing up. Everyone still looked so game for some more bottles. Brian was even refilling his mug.
"Do you want me to walk you upstairs?" Vino asked and stood up after me.
"No. No. I'm fine... I just want to sleep."
"Good night Kane..." the gang said in chorus.
"Nighty night," I answered. My head was feeling heavy as well and I needed to catch some sleep.
"It's the third door, okay?" I heard Vinoreminding me.
