《The Compound》Chapter 7

It was your and Steve's first date. He had texted you to let you know to dress fancy, for the restaurant. You had spent about an hour before, perfecting your makeup and hair. You decided to straighten it, just to make your appearance cleaner.
You also decided on a straight black dress that went right above the knee. It shaped all your curves in the right places, hiding every insecurity you had. You topped it off with nude makeup, but with a light red lipstick to add a pop of color, with some nude heels.
"Hey Y/N, Steve just wanted me to check on you-" Kat came into your closet to see your final look. You could see her pause in the mirror and her mouth drop as she began looking you up and down, "Damn," She lightly laughed, "Steve is going to faint."
"Really?" You asked and lightly blushed.
"Uh, yeah," She said as if it were obvious, "I've seen him go through rounds and phases of women, and while some of them were hot, none of there were gorgeous like you."
"That's so sweet," You said.
"No problem," She lightly smiled, "Anyways Steve will be home in about five minutes, then you two will go out since he's already in proper attire." You nodded.
"Thanks, Kat."
"Anytime," She lightly smiled and walked out. You grabbed a nude shoulder bag to go with your heels and placed in your phone, your glasses (in the case you needed to read really small print), and of course a few other things.
You made your way out of your room, through the hallway, down the stairs, and into the living room. You could see the back of Steve in his suit looking down and readjusting his jacket briefly before turning around at the sound of your heels. He looked at you and smiled, which quickly turned into his mouth dropping wide open as he looked you up and down, gulping. "Hey," You lightly said and walked over to him, giving a small smile.
"H-hi," he stuttered, still staring at you. You lightly giggled.
"How was your day?" You asked.
"Okay," He said, "It improved a lot just now." he lightly laughed at himself.
"You look very handsome Steve." You lightly told him and straightened his tie, him looking down to see what you were doing and smiling after, approving.
"You look absolutely stunning," He said, "Not that you're not always stunning, but you're just a new kind of stunning." You laughed again.
"C'mon let's go before you start sweating too much." He nodded and blushed, leading you through the house and to the front door.
You got into one of his numerous cars, unable to identify which one, but it was extremely nice. He pulled out of the parking garage and into the streets of New York, which managed to be chaotic and beautiful at night. It was primarily silent on the way there, which was fine. It was only ten minutes, so it wasn't very awkward.
Once you got there Steve helped you out of his car. You two walked in hand in hand and were almost immediately seated. It was as if the hostess knew exactly who Steve was, although she probably did.
You began skimming the menu, so did Steve, but you were very overwhelmed. It wasn't even a large menu, but it had been far too long since you had been given this many options. "Need some help?" Steve asked and lightly chuckled, reading your mind.

"To be honest, yes." You sighed.
"No worries," he lightly smiled, "The filet's great, I always get that, but I know their scampi is phenomenal too."
"Then the filet it is." You lightly smiled and looked at him, who smiled back.
The waitress came and greeted you two, getting your drink and food orders. Steve, being a gentleman, ordered for you since you were still quite confused and anxious about interacting with other people. You were pretty confused about the world in general, it had changed significantly in the last eight years of being locked up, but you were gradually adjusting.
It was a beautiful small place. It was dark, but there were small candles at each table, with some more lighting here and there. You got a nice table next to a large window, across the street from a small park.
"So, tell me more about yourself," Steve asked and you both chuckled, well aware that you had been learning about each other for the last few days.
"I don't know," You started and lightly sighed, still maintaining a small smile, "What do you want to know?"
"Tell me more about your family." He began and sipped his wine.
"Oh, I don't know," You lightly chuckled, "The only super memorable thing I remember that's noteworthy was my dog."
"Your dog is more noteworthy than anyone else in your family?" He asked.
"Correct," You said and he lightly laughed. "Her name was Sadie, generic I know, but she was an Australian Shepherd who helped us gather cattle. She was also great at transitioning between work and home. She would sleep with me every night, curled up right next to me." You smiled at the thought of the warm being next to you, "I'm assuming she's passed by now. If not she would be 16." He nodded, understanding.
"I've never had pets, I've thought about getting one before though."
"You should, I mean if you want to of course," You began, "But they're so incredible. They can always tell when you feel a certain way and are always there to cheer you up when you need it most. Even more so than a human." He nodded again. "So what about you?" You built up the courage to ask.
"Well, what about me?" He asked and lightly smiled, imitating you from earlier. You rolled your eyes but smiled too.
"What about your family?" You could see him physically become slightly uncomfortable. "You don't have to talk about anything if you don't want to of course."
"No, it's important you know and that we're both honest," He began, "My father died when I was very young, I really don't have any memories of him. My mother raised me, and she passed about ten years ago from various health complications that just couldn't be solved. It was right after The Incident, and resources were low, so there were no medications to help her. I really tried to put as much money as I could at the time down, but that wasn't much considering I gained all my wealth in the reconstruction of it all." You nodded. You could feel some of his pain. "I just wish it all went different. Not only for the sake of the world and the universe but also for my mother." A few moments of silence followed after he finished up.
"Steve," You began, taking your small hand and placing it on his large one, which sat on the edge of the table, covered with a white table cloth. "Don't blame yourself for this. You did your absolute best, and we all know that. I'm sure your mother did too, and that's all anyone can ask for." You lightly smiled and he lightly smiled back.

"Thanks," He said and looked up at you, making eye contact.
"So what else should I know about you?" You asked, lightly leaning back and removing your hand, trying to make it more comfortable for both you and him after the air had gone tense.
"I travel a lot," He said and sighed, leaning back as well, "But it's usually boring." You nodded.
"But what about you?" You asked once again.
"Me?" He asked.
"Yeah, about you as a person. Like what you like to do in your free time, your favorite show or movie, your favorite color, I don't know." He lightly chuckled.
"It's been a while since I've been asked about myself," He lightly smiled. "In my very sparse amount of free time I like to work out and run, it's a way to relieve stress." He said, crossing his arms over his chest, "I used to read often, but I just ran out of time to." You nodded your head.
Right after he wrapped up speaking, your food came. You began eating, and to say it was delicious was an understatement. "How is it?" Steve asked.
"Incredible," You smiled and cut into your steak to take another bite. He smiled.
"I'm glad." He lightly smiled back, taking a sip of his wine.
We wrapped up dinner, relatively quickly. Steve paid, and we got up to leave. We left hand in hand just like how we had walked in and briefly waited for Steve's car. Once it arrived, we both got in and went off back to his place.
"I didn't know if you wanted dessert," Steve said as we walked into the living room, "But I had some of my people pick up a cheesecake, since we skipped dessert at the restaurant. If you don't want it right now it'll be in the fridge for later." He lightly smiled.
"Actually, some right now would be great." So you and he resorted to the kitchen, him cutting large slices, and placing them on small plates, giving them to each of you. Instead of going anywhere else, you hoisted yourself on the countertop, Steve leaning against it but right next to you. "This is delicious, where is it from?"
"This cheesecake place down the street," He said, "They have the cheapest but best cheesecake in New York."
"Agreed," You said.
"So did you enjoy tonight?" He asked you, taking his eyes off the cheesecake and placing them back on you.
"A lot, it was great," You smiled and he smiled back, "What about you?"
"Tonight was the first time in years I've relaxed, so I most definitely enjoyed it."
"I'm glad." You said and smiled even brighter.
"We should do this every Friday," Steve spoke up, this time facing you.
"We should," You said and placed your now finished plate down next to you, "It's really nice spending time with you." You mentioned barely above a whisper, like a slightly embarrassed sixth-grader with a crush.
"I enjoy spending time with you too," He smiled, thinking about how your scent tended to relax him immensely, "I'm just lucky I get to spend so much time with such a beautiful woman."
"Oh stop," You lightly chuckled and blushed, him lightly laughing with you, "I get to spend every day with Captain America, how do you think I feel?" He awkwardly smiled, which made you realize that title didn't bring back great memories for him. After a few more awkward moments of silence you finally spoke up, "Sorry I mentioned that." You said and looked down.
"It's no problem," he said, "It's just been a while." You nodded. "Things are just a lot different." After an additional amount of awkward silence he spoke up, "Why don't we go outside, get some fresh air?" You nodded, eagerly agreeing.
He helped you off the counter, taking your hand in his and leading your out to the patio. The cool New York air was fresh from the altitude you were at, with a light breeze, but you still managed to hear the distance voices of people talking and laughing and the beeping of cars from down below. "It's always incredibly beautiful out here."
"It is," He smiled, "Still not as beautiful as you though."
"Are you ever going to stop telling that joke?" You lightly laughed and looked at him, him laughing and looking back to you.
"As long as you remain beautiful."
"That's so sweet Steve." You light nudged him as your laughter continued. He nudged you back, but it was a little bit too much for you. He also weighed a little less than 100 pounds more than you. Losing your balance, you stumbled back and lightly yelped as you felt yourself fall.
However, Steve was right on your case. He immediately grabbed your waist with his arms and hoisted you back up. He held on to you as you caught your breath briefly. "Sorry doll," He cringed at himself, still holding on. "That was definitely my fault."
"No problem, it was an accident." You lightly smiled. Steve refused to let you go, as even that small drop to the floor of the patio made his heart stop. You briefly looked up at his gorgeous blue eyes, as his met yours. You swallowed quickly, knowing exactly what would happen after his eyes grazed down to your lips then back up.
You slowly moved towards him, as he moved down towards you. The gap caused you to have to stand on your toes, but soon enough your lips met. They moved in tandem, as the butterflies absolutely erupted in your stomach like never before. You wrapped your frail arms around his neck, his hands tightening around your waist.
You both eventually let go, gazing back at each other for a few moments before you took it upon yourself to slam your lips back together. You could tell Steve was taken aback for a moment, before smiling into the kiss and holding on to you even tighter than before, leaning in even further to the kiss. After a few minutes of pouring into your kiss, you two finally let go, with swollen lips. "Well shit." You said as you both began laughing.
"We should do that more often." He added on, still holding onto your waist even after all that time.
"That sounds like a good idea." You lightly smiled. You stood there for a few more moments before you realized it was actually about 10 minutes later. "It's getting kinda cold-"
"Yeah it is." Steve lightly laughed, letting you go but still holding your hand and helping you inside, holding the door open for you as always.
"I'm gonna take a shower," You smiled at Steve and made your way to the bathroom.
After a nice, long, hot shower you got out and quickly changed into a t-shirt and sweatpants, as usual. Steve smiled at you and went in right after you, leaving you to browse through a few channels on TV. You had found a cooking show and immediately relaxed remembering the countless hours you spent as a teen focusing on your own cooking and baking, and using these shows as a pathway to expanding your passion for food.
While you had grown up loving biology and the sciences, you knew your family could never afford for you to go to a top college, let alone medical school. So you settled on opening a bakery, going to culinary school for a few years. It would be cheaper and you would be able to stay in town and support your family. That was of course until you were whisked away to The Compound.
But of course, you became cold relatively fast. You walked to your own closet but got a better idea after looking at the collection of hoodies and sweatshirts you had. So you skipped your way to Steve's walk in, to find his large collection of clothes, but specifically went to the hoodies and sweatshirts. They all smelled like him and his scent, making you relax and soothing your mind immediately.
So you grabbed a large grey one and slipped it on. The garment went down to your knees and almost fit like an extremely loose dress, going right back to the bed and climbing under the covers, getting comfortable.
Steve came out about 15 minutes later in just sweatpants, framing his abs, which you of course focused on for a second. "Like the view doll?" he asked and chuckled. Your eyes went wide as you decided to hide your bright red face in the sleeves of the sweatshirt. "Don't be embarrassed." He laughed a little more. "Wait, is that my sweatshirt?" You lightly nodded.
"It's just, I got cold and it smelled like you and-"
"No need for an explanation," he climbed under the white duvet next to you, "You look adorable in it."
"Thank you," You smiled and blushed some more, then focused back on the TV.
"Food shows, huh?" You nodded.
"I used to watch them all the time, I loved to cook and bake."
"Is that why your cookies were so good?" You lightly giggled.
"Maybe." After a few minutes of you two watching, Steve seemed a little bored. You realized he had fallen asleep as you heard him lightly snoring. You lightly crept over him and turned off the lights and TV with the remotes, climbing in next to him and falling asleep as well.
(A/N: I always end chapters with going to sleep, don't I? I don't know why I think I'm just not great at ending these things. I'll try to try something new, but I can't make promises.)
