《The Compound》Chapter 20

Where were you right now? An underground bunker.
That's right, Steve insisted that you be put into one of his eight (yes, eight) underground bunkers while he, Buck, and Sam had their meeting with the president out of your safety. Ideally it would be more enjoyable with Rachel and Lyla, but the three Alphas decided that having the three of you in one place during such a tender meeting that could go wrong at any second was far too risky.
So here you sat, in a bunker ten stories underground with Nat and 15 security guards. You had to admit, the bunker was nice. It was decorated like a luxury living room, with a small kitchen in one corner and a small hallway that led to a single bedroom. But behind all the decked-out rooms was a wall that was 8 feet thick. So overall, you were pretty safe.
You were sitting down on the plush chocolate-colored couch, next to Nat. While she was the head of security, she was company for now. One of your favorite things about Nat though was the old stories she told of Steve on missions. He would always be a stuck up ass on them until they were over, and even then he was military Steve. "Then he met Peggy." She began, "And they were madly in love. Military Steve was never around with Peggy, she was the one who taught him how to be the Steve he is with you." You nodded. You never took offense to people bringing up Peggy, because you knew how important she was to Steve.
"And then, ya know, things went downhill pretty fast." Nat sighed, sitting back on the couch. "First it was small arguments, but they were frequent. And then it went into full out fights, and finally when it got too personal insults was when the two called it off. They knew it had grown toxic and there was no way they would be together after some of the things that had been said."
"It was mainly Peggy too," She concluded, "I mean, it may have been their biological dynamics, ya know Alpha stuff and all, but sometimes I would hear them, and some of the things she said were just ruthless. I mean, attacking Steve completely. He would fight back but would never say things on her level."
"What would she say?" You asked, sipping on some hot tea the two of you had made.
"Oh, I don't know." Nat sighed, "This one time she said Steve didn't have what it took to be a leader. It was right after the Incident, she blamed the entire population wipeout on him. And that comment alone still haunts him to this day I know it."
"That's why he blames himself for the death of his mom-"
"Exactly, it was Peggy." A part of you grew extremely angry at this woman you didn't even know. You knew Steve well enough to understand that under all the layers of tough skin he had he was somewhat fragile. And those comments hit him like radioactive bullets you imagined.
"What about after her?" You asked next, "Who else did he date?" Nat began lightly chuckling.
"A bunch of no good models," She admitted, "Stuck up girls with bleach blonde hair and a bratty personality. He never loved them as people, he loved the company. The ability to have someone to take to bed and then wake up and not actually give a shit about what happened to them."

"So he was a playboy?" You questioned next.
"Yeah, that's a good way to describe him." She added, "Tabloids labeled him as 'The new Tony Stark' because it seemed every night the paps would catch him playing with another woman in tight dresses with fake boobs." You lightly laughed. "But then he stopped, for a year or two. And he grew to almost become a gray person. It was hard to get a smile out of him. He absorbed himself in work, built up his company even further so it's the powerhouse it is today and stayed away from every woman who crossed his path."
"So why did he go to The Compound."
"It was Bucky and Sam's idea, actually." She began, "The two of them wanted to settle down, start a life. And they hated seeing Steve that way. So after a lot of begging and pleading, they got him to agree to browse Omegas. He hated the idea, to begin with, buying people. But I guess he found you and knew you were his soulmate. He wasn't wrong." You tightly smiled, placing your warm mug down.
"I'm going to make fun of him now for his playboy days." Nat scoffed.
"You'll get me fired."
"Don't worry," You shrugged and smiled, "He loves you. And even if he tried to I would yell at him not to and he would listen."
"You are the only person he listens to besides himself." You took some pride in that and smiled at her comment. Of course, you knew it was true. The man would do anything for you. But having other people recognize that felt even better. "Want some wine?" She asked next.
"Nat, it's like 4 in the afternoon-"
"And?" She got up, grabbing your mugs and walking to the kitchen, "We're going to be in here a while considering Steve's not leaving until he has an answer he wants."
"Do you think he'll actually be able to get one? I mean it's the president-"
"Sweetheart," She lightly laughed. You turned around to see her pouring two glasses of red wine at the kitchen counter and rolled her eyes at you, "He's Steve Rogers. That man has miles worth of blackmail on every government official. If Alexander Pierce doesn't do something about this, he'll be impeached and removed from office."
You two sat back down, large glasses in hand, and began watching a random chick flick you could find to occupy the last few hours before Steve came back, despite the fact you never really knew when he would come back. The meeting could have later hours and hours on end. But you knew Steve needed an answer. Whether firm or implied, he was Steve. A stubborn jackass sometimes, but that was Steve.
You two finally heard the elevator ding, both of your heads shooting back from the TV. And there, walking out, stood a tired-looking Steve. Physically to most, he may have seemed average, but you knew better. He was slightly slouched, his hair was out of place ever so slightly. So yes, he a long day.
Both of you stood up relatively fast, you sprinting on the hardwood floors and grabbing Steve hugging him, he hugged your right back. "Hey, Sweetheart." He huffed out in a tired sigh. You pulled away momentarily.

"How'd it go?" You asked. He sighed once again, this time Nat making close eye contact with him as well. Your anxiety was high for an answer, your breath caught in your throat.
"We're leaking all of it tomorrow," You gave him a look of confusion.
"Steve," You could hear Nat, she had a warning voice, "A-are you sure?"
"Yes." He sighed, "We have to."
-Time skip-
"Breaking news, President Alexander Pierce is currently scheduled to be placed in front of Congress tomorrow after an anonymous source leaked records that connect the president to 500 billion dollars taken from the yearly U.S. deficit over the course of six years and placed into his private checking account. Over 300 billion dollars of said funds were used to invest in stocks via insider trading, and a drug trafficking ring based in South America that spanned all across the world and even into Russia. If the president is convicted and removed from office, he could face up to 150 years in federal prison without parole."
You and Steve were placed in front of the TV as you watched it all unfold. The downfall of Alexander Pierce.
After his absolute refusal to shutdown The Compound, despite minor threats made by Steve, Bucky, and Sam, they decided to release the big dog. And yes, that was years of proof of money severe federal crimes he had committed. And now, he was up for impeachment.
After a few more minutes Steve sighed, grabbing the remote and turning it off. "That's enough of the world crumbling apart for today." You didn't want to say anything, even though you knew that if he wouldn't have released any of the information it wouldn't have been crumbling. But he was doing it for the common good.
"It should only be a week or two Steve." You reminded, "Then the VP is put in, and then we wait three years until another election."
"Yeah and let this country get a little more corrupt every day."
"If you're so upset then why don't you just run for office?" You snapped, turning your whole body around on the couch to face him behind you. "You have all the criteria, everyone knows you, I don't see a problem with it."
"There just is one Y/N, it's why I've never run before."
"And what is that Steve? You've been pushing off this idea since we met and everyone around you thinks it would be good-"
"To protect you!" He finally rose his voice. He rubbed his forehead for a minute before looking back at you, "You're an independent woman, Y/N. And while legally you're technically mine, I want you to be independent. The last time there was an Alpha in office with an Omega wife was over half a century ago, and a lot of those ideals from then about Alphas and Omegas are still around today. How do you think the media would react to a powerful Omega woman with an agenda to help save this fucked society would react to that?" You looked at him for a few moments. You weren't sure what to do: The Omega part of you was telling you to back down, while the human was telling you to stick up for yourself. You were split.
"Not very well, Steven," You stood up, crossing your arms over your chest and standing your ground, "But I don't give a fuck about the media's interpretation of me, and neither should you. And I know you have a very prestigious reputation, but you also have to let the American people, AKA the only people that really matter when you're in office, see progression. That's what people want Steve, that's what they have wanted forever!" You were pleading with him now, "Pierce was cycling through office by rigging the system, now he can't. So step up and be the damn man everyone wants to see. Steve, you're Captain fucking America! People love you! And they all know you're gonna do what's right."
This time, Steve was the one to look absolutely shocked. His eyes wide, mouth partially agape. He stood back in awe at your response, but it was hard for you to register whether he was impressed, pissed, or both.
"I'll consider it." He stated, making stern eye contact and moving past you in the direction of his office. That was enough to confirm that indeed he was both. You knew it was just the Alpha and man in him fighting. The Alpha wanted to put you in your place, the man wanted to praise you for sticking up for yourself. The conflict was frustrating him, so naturally, he excused himself.
You went your own way and back to the library. This was primarily because you too needed to calm down, but also because if Steve needed to find you he knew to look in the library. You picked out a new book from the thousands there and curled up in your favorite chair in the corner. Steve had even purposefully placed one of your favorite blankets there prior to making you as comfortable as possible, which of course you wrapped yourself up in.
You were far indulged in the book, you weren't even remotely sure how much time had passed before Steve walked in. You didn't notice at first until you eventually heard soft footsteps, looked up, and there stood your lover leaning against the door frame and smiling lightly to you. You placed your book down, swinging the blanket over and getting up, walking across the cool hardwood floor to him. "Listen Steve I'm-"
"No I'm sorry," He interrupted you, "I was putting myself over you and everyone else. Some of the comments I made were selfish and unnecessary and I'm sorry." You lightly nodded.
"I'm sorry I yelled," You looked up, your eyes meeting his pure blue ones, "It was out of line and I shouldn't have."
"It's okay." He said lightly, reaching his arms out, which you gladly took in a hug.
"I'm not sorry about what I said." You mumbled into his chest and he chuckled.
"I know you're not," he smiled, kissing the top of your head, "You weren't wrong."
"Yeah, I know I was right."
