Lia's pov
Everyone glances at Nick. Through Aaron's night vision, I see that he has a slight grin on his face but fear in his eyes. No one speaks so I pop up, "Why don't you like Nick?" Silence. Just as Billy opens his mouth to ask something different, the same voice rings through, because. I giggle and faces turn my way. "What? That's what I would say too." I smile. Bailee snickers and things are okay until Nick starts to cough. Not just a small cough everyone gets, but a bronchitis-type cough. "Are you okay, dude?" Aaron asks. Zak places a hand on his back and hits him. Nick is silent but I see that his eyes are watering. "Are you okay?" Billy asks. Nick clears his throat, "Yeah." He sounds dazed. "It's really cold right here," Zak, who is next to him says. Nick places his head in his hands but quickly stands up. "What?" Aaron says. "I swear I just felt something grab my leg. Like you know how little kids ride on your leg." He freaks out. He sits on the floor, "Oh my word, man. It's still there." "Get off of him!" Zak orders the little girl. I hear a sigh from Nick, "I feel sick." One of the guys walkies goes off. I catch Jay saying to bring Nick back to base. "He's right. You need to calm down," Aaron says standing up. We'll go somewhere else. "Wait," Billy says, "Someone should stay in here." "Who?" Bailee asks. "You can, Bill." Zak says. "Wait can I stay?" Bailee asks. "Me too?" I ask excitedly. "Sure," Zak says. Nick starts to cough insanely again as the three of them walk out, Aaron leaving his camera on a table facing the three of us. "Cool," I whisper. Billy grabs the Ovilus V, "Yes! I love that!" I say. Billy chuckles and turns it on. "Little girl? Anything you want to say, go ahead," Billy says sweetly. It's silent for a few minutes but then a word comes through, you. I open my mouth to ask something else but it says hurt. "Did somebody hurt you?" Billy asks. Little did we know that's not what the spirit meant at all.

Moment later the Ovilus is silent and so are we. I glance up at Billy and get slightly scared. He is looking at Bailee and me with darkness in his eyes. "Billy?" Bailee asks, "Are you okay?" Everything after happened so fast. Billy stands up and takes a step towards the bed we are sitting on. I scoot back towards the center praying he's okay. Bailee stays on the edge as the man grumbles angrily, "Get out." It was not Billy's voice. I knew that for a fact. I stay frozen in fear as he gets closer to Bailee thinking how could this be possible. It was like we were in a horror movie and this wasn't real life. A low growl comes from behind me and I turn around, seeing nothing. Bailee screams from behind me. I turn and see her on the floor and Billy Tolley coming for me next. I scoot back until I am against the pillows and wall. I look at him, "Billy! Stop!" I try. He grabs my arm and twists it, then pushing me off the bed.
Zak, Nick, and Aaron rush in. "Billy!" Zak yells. Aaron runs up and grabs his arms, Billy collapses on the bed. I could tell he was back to normal, his eyes having lost their gloom. "Oh my gosh. Oh my gosh! What the hell is wrong with me?" He has pain in his voice. "Billy relax," Aaron says calmly. Zak and Nick come over and help us up. I brush myself off and try not to move my arm Billy grabbed. Bailee doing the same with the shoulder she landed on. "Are you guys okay?" Aaron asks. Billy turns around, "I'm so sorry! I don't know what happened!" He stands up off the bed, "It's fine. It isn't your fault," Bailee responds. "Yeah. Honestly I just want to get out of here." I add. Everyone agrees and we rush to base. "Are you guys okay?" Jay asks when we walk in. "Course we are. Billy didn't know what he was doing," I smile at him. He still seemed pretty scared, luckily it was almost dawn. Jay shows us a huge black figure go towards Billy after the Ovilus says hurt, the same one leave after I fall off the bed. The same one Bailee and I saw in that room the first time we were there. "Cool," Zak says, astonished. "Scary," Nick adds.

A man opens the door, "How was that?" He grins, the sunrise peeking over the mountains. "Great place you got here," Zak says as we all pack up. Bailee and I help them load up the van. "Thanks a million for letting us stay tonight," I say. "Yeah it was amazing," Bailee adds.
"Really?" Aaron asks. "That was one of our most active places!"
"Exactly! It was amazing!!" I exclaim. "Well we had fun, too," Nick says. "Yeah," the other three chorus. I yawn, "We better get back to the orphanage. Madame Priscilla will be worried if we aren't back by eight." Bailee nods, "We really appreciate it!" "It was very nice meeting you girls," Jay says. "It was a dream come true meeting you guys," Bailee says. We turn around and start walking. "I wish this night didn't have to end," I say when we are out of ear shot. Bailee grins "Me too. But it was still the best night ever!"

The Beta Test
Our nameless narrator participates in a beta test for an early VRMMO game Meridian 60. That's not the real name but it captures the spirit of the adventure given the chronological and contextual era of the game. His character is unique and special but purely for mundane reasons and not because of any inherent or social significance. The first chapter which is mandatory to submit a story on RR serves as a bit of a prologue with some exposition, although I limited that to a reasonble level. I plan to begin releasing additional chapters starting Thursday, to align with the 48 hour submission approval process and also because I have something to do Wednesday. I haven't written anything but the summary and first chapter, nor have I plotted anything out. This is because my plan is to release roughly 34000 words a day, 10 chapters of ~12.5 pages each, for 3 days at which point the story will be complete. I'd have liked to plan for more but handling the interface tables and so forth needed for a data heavy litrpg slows down the writing process. 100k words is a bit short, a standard pre epic fantasy 300 page spec fic novel, but this is mostly a writing exercise and I am considering a longer project if I can maintain the pace. Probably do a different concept, maybe a dungeon core, over 5 days, since a 500 page novel is more common these days. Slight subversion of VRMMO stories Stat heavy/crunchy No paying your bills by gaming No out of game conspiracies No angst, interpersonal drama, or damsels/dudes in distress Schedule is 30000 words a day excepting the first chapter, a limitation of RRs fiction submission system Fantasy, high magic, male lead, no party, guild, or harem No gore, some profanity, no sexual content, and no current plans for anything traumatic

Delicate as Glass
[participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] Nuri, an [Assistant Glassworker], only has a single Skill. It’s really not fair. He’s worked in the hot shop his entire life, following in his father’s footsteps after his parents passed away, but he’s stuck. Despite possessing above-average talent as an artisan, he still hasn’t shed his [Assistant] status, gained a second Skill, or even leveled enough to reach the first Threshold. Besides, he’s bored; most days he daydreams of adventure and becoming a hero, or pines for the renown that’s sure to be his if he evolves his Class into a [Master Glass Smith], but nothing ever changes—until suddenly, fate strikes, and nothing is ever the same again. These days, Nuri sees more magic, prestige, and adventure than he can handle as he gets swept up in realm-shaking conspiracies and desperate fights for his life. Maybe a boring life wasn’t so bad after all. Disclaimers: 1) Names were mostly chosen through random generators and aren’t necessarily final. If they seem derivative or boring, blame RNG. 2) Skills, Classes, levels, and the entire system is currently a work in progress; please be kind if it’s not very well fleshed out yet. 3) This is the first full-length novel I've set out to write without a single plot point ready. I had nothing in mind other than a recent visit to a hot shop. Molten glass is pretty awesome. 4) Related, I know much less about glass than I’d like. I did some research, but mistakes are bound to happen. If you have a correction, thanks! Please be polite about it. 5) The prose is my experimental attempt at first-person, present tense. I realize it may not be everyone’s preference, but I hope you’ll give it a try anyway!
