"Okay." he stated, breaking the uncomfortable and awkward silence on my part, his one word wreaking havoc inside my heart, it made me open my eyes. I was not expecting him to agree this quickly, his easy acceptance crumbled my imaginative fairy land and castles, in a way it also validated my decision.
I averted my eyes, wanting to hide the sadness and simply nodded. I tried to pull away from his hold but he simply stood up with me and as soon as I regained my balance, he stepped away from me, putting a respectful distance between us. His handsome face was set in hard lines, I could feel him putting up his iron walls which made his aura more dangerous and frightening.
I opened my mouth to say something but words failed me, I simply curled and uncurled my fingers and toes in anticipation. Ranaji for a few minutes simply stood and stared at me, his golden eyes reading my face in a cool calculative manner, making me feel like a criminal. Without saying another word he simply turned away, about to leave but my hands moved with a mind of their own and I grabbed his arm, tightly. Half expecting him to brush off my hold, I coerced myself to speak anything, just to prolong this moment, "So what will you tell our families?" I asked him nervously, my voice breaking down twice.
This indeed was proving to be the most difficult decision of my life, letting go of the first person I childishly assumed I was in love with. On one hand I wanted to hold on to him and go ahead with this marriage irrespective of this huge divide between us but on the other hand I knew that over the years we both will end up hating each other because this huge divide will keep on expanding between us.
He chuckled humourlessly and faced me again, a dark sinister smile playing around his lips, "The truth." he answered calmly yet again, his tone civilised and polite but the emotions brewing behind his eyes were anything but civilised, he was a true diplomat.
"Can you reject me? I mean in front of my family...I don't want them to know that I refused this proposal, it will hurt my papa.... For some reason, he wants me to get married to you." I requested, trying to make him understand my situation, I was sure that he will simply agree and leave without turning back even once.
After all he must have thousands of girls lining up to marry him but to my utter shock, Ranaji threw his head back and laughed, making me leave his hand and step back awkwardly. "Siya, you are naïve." He declared out loud, still laughing, like an idiot I stood enchanted upon seeing him laugh whole heartedly even if it was at my own expense, his words not registering in my head, "No I will not lie for you Angel-"
"But-"
"No, let me complete."he murmured and held up his hand, silencing me effectively. He leaned down slightly, his eyes hooded and filled with a dangerous streak I was not able to put my finger on. "I heard you and your issues.....I am open for negotiations but not right now, it's late and I want you to have clear understanding of what you are asking from me." He finished smugly, reading every emotion passing on my face.

I opened and closed my mouth, wanting to respond coherently and demand a straight answer but his proximity and sudden playfulness, intoxicated my entire being, so I simply nodded and turned away from him, not being able to handle his magnetic presence. I was slightly annoyed at my reaction to his presence, silently cursing him for not being bothered by my presence and maintaining this civilised gentlemanly façade.
While here I was behaving like an hormonal teenager in front of him, getting flustered by his slightest actions. I didn't hear him leave but I could sense his absence as the smell and sight of the rain engulfed me again and I gladly stepped out in the rain, hoping that the rain will wash away any traces of doubt from my head.

The next morning I was sitting in the car with papa, on the way to Ranaji's farmhouse to have a late brunch with his family. I was twisting the ends of my lavender pashmina shawl while looking at the passing pine trees, my mind constantly going back to our yesterday's conversation, it shocked me that he didn't storm out of our house after my refusal instead he left after having tea with papa in his study.
"Siya beta, I am so proud of you." Papa's gentle voice pulled me out of my train of thought, I shifted nervously and looked at him, forcing myself to smile brightly. "Papa can I ask you something?" I asked him softly while tucking my hair behind my ear.
"I know what you want to ask me, bache....your mother told me yesterday. I was expecting you to refuse this proposal yesterday in front of everyone but you didn't." My father spoke and looked at me briefly his old yet stern face full of pride and happiness, i bit my lips to prevent myself from blurting out the truth, not wanting to upset my father in the morning itself.
I looked down at my hands and murmured, " But why did you choose him? What's so special about this proposal?" Upon hearing my inquiry, my father chuckled softly, making me smile despite my mood.
"Beta, Ranaji's father helped me a lot when you were born, financially as well as emotionally....... I was falsely accused in my early years of service for a crime I didn't commit, no one believed me.... I was even suspended but it was Vikram who stood by me and supported me. I can send my daughter to his house only as I trust him to take care of you as a father. As for Jai that boy grew up in front of me, he is a very nice boy.......thorough gentleman, he will treat you right." Papa explained and turned around in his seat to look at me, reading my reaction with a kind smile on his face.
I pressed my lips together to control my tears, of course my dear papa will secure my future, "I want you to build a life for yourself now." He murmured while wiping my tears, I simply nodded and turned around as soon as someone opened the door, wiping away my tears hurriedly. I was so engrossed in the conversation, I didn't realise that we have already reached Ranaji's Large and looming farmhouse.

I adjusted my simple white suit and lavender shawl while heading for the entrance with my hand tucked at the crook of my papa's elbow. "Princess, I have promised your mother to have breakfast with her, so I will not be able to join you but you call me when you are done, I will come and pick you up." He whispered softly, cautious of the servant following us, carrying the fruits and vegetables from our kitchen garden .
"Rajput, how are you?" Ranaji's father loud voice greeted us as soon as we entered their lavish yet homely farmhouse. Papa simply chuckled and the two men embraced each other warmly, making me smile. I was surprised that I didn't notice their comradeship earlier, "Siya, beta." Ranaji's mother who was wearing a sophisticated light green sari, air kissed my cheeks, making me smile nervously.
I bowed down and touched her feet as the two men were deep in conversation, standing in a corner, "Namaste aunty." I greeted her shyly with my head bowed. " God bless you beta, you look like a fairy in this white suit and that lavender colour is looking so pretty on you." She spoke warmly and caressed my cheek, making me blush.
I mumbled a soft thank you and looked around the lavish wooden space from the corner of my eyes , my eyes searching for the man who has occupied my every thought and dream, "He is in the library."Ranaji's mother whispered teasingly, making my cheeks go bright red. She laughed upon seeing my reaction grabbing the men's attention and pinched my cheek tenderly, " Fairy." She murmured lovingly, staring at me adoringly.
As soon as the men joined us, I bent down to touch Ranaji's father feet but he stopped me and gave my head a slight pat, "God bless you, beta."
I smiled and took a step back next to my father, keeping my head bowed and twiddling my thumbs while the conversation flowed around me.
In no time my father excused himself and to my surprise Ranaji's father also left with him, discussing about some site he wanted papa to see. "It's like this between them but I am glad that I have you to myself for the time being." Ranaji's mother stated while grabbing my hand and pulling me along with her, giving me a tour of their beautiful farmhouse which I got to know was designed by her.
"So tell me something about yourself." Ranaji's mother broke the comfortable silence between us while pouring a cup of tea for me and passing it to me with a warm smile on her face. "I love painting and sketching..." I started with a bright smile on my face, " I also love to dance and bake. I am not good with numbers but I love languages, I can speak Hindi, English and French...." I went on speaking while sipping my tea, an effortless conversation flowing between the two of us.

Lalita Rana smiled upon seeing the angelic girl talking animatedly, this girl was a breath of fresh air, little ball of energy, full of colour and positivity. She now understood her husband's fixation with this girl, why he pestered them to travel all the way to Shimla to see his friend's daughter. Lalita Rana known as a witty and ruthless socialite found herself bewitched by this fairy like beautiful girl , a perfect girl for her workaholic son, she thought to herself with a smile on her old yet beautiful face.
Rana Jai Singh found himself again observing the girl in fascination as she continued chattering animatedly with his mother who was hanging onto her every word. A small smile was playing around the corner of his lips, yesterday her refusal came as a shock to him, her walking away from this proposal was all the proof he needed for him to believe that this silly girl, god knows how, was still untouched by the maliciousness and viciousness of the world.
He walked inside the dining room and stood directly behind Siya's chair, who was completely unaware about her surroundings, talking animatedly. He motioned his mother to keep quiet with his eyes and placed his hand on his angel's chair.
"Aunty I once asked Ranaji about his favourite colour and you know he said that he had never thought about it.....I was shocked."Siya muttered, her eyes wide and full of shock which made Lalita laugh out loud.
Jai simply leaned down such that he was whispering right next to her ear, her sweet floral scent engulfing him.
He felt Siya sit up straight which made his lips touch her ear and she gasped out loud, making Jai smile and his mother look away with a smile on her face.
"I think I like lavender." Siya heard him whisper huskily, his lips touching her ear and like an idiot she pressed her hand against her face and moaned out loud in embarrassment.
