"I bet Veronica is excited for lunch today," Jessica said with a smirk on her face. She was leaning against Tyler's van as all of them gathered before classes started for the day.
"Well, they are having tater tots, and that's her favorite," Eric said, chewing on a Twizzler.
"Wait, we're having tater tots today?" Veronica asked, looking up from her math book in excitement. She had forgotten to finish her homework the night before.
Her friends laughed at her love of food before Jessica continued, pleased to spread the gossip. Veronica did nothing to stop her — they would all know four classes later.
"Emmett Cullen asked her to have lunch with him. Alone."
"Shut up!" Angela exclaimed, which was slightly out of character for her, but she was excited. She reached over and snapped the green scrunchie on Veronica's wrist. "No way!"
"Why are you surprised?" Mike asked, shrugging. "He's been staring at her since she got here. I'm just surprised he actually spoke to her."
"You're abandoning us," Tyler said, fake pouting. "You'll never come back."
"Pretty sure I'll be back tomorrow," Veronica said, pulling her hair up into a high ponytail since she would be heading to the gym in a few minutes. "It's Friday, which means they're serving pizza and Jess lets me have her crust."
"Fine, but just promise you won't leave us for those Abercrombie models if you start dating," Eric said, frowning.
"Course not," she said, scoffing. "And it's just lunch in the school cafeteria, E. It's not a date."
"What do you guys think you'll talk about?" Angela asked, smiling.
Veronica shrugged. "I don't know. No one really knows anything about them, right? Who knows what any of them are actually like?"
"Maybe you'll find out why they're so antisocial," Tyler mumbled. "Seriously, if I only ever talked to my siblings, I'd go crazy."
Of course, they were so antisocial because they didn't want anyone to find out about them. It also wouldn't do them any good to make human attachments, because they would have to move away soon to avoid suspicion about their ages. Which made Veronica wonder why Emmett was giving her the time of day considering that he thought she was a plain old human.
As she thought, the family in question pulled into the parking lot in their fancy cars. As usual, they took the two spots next to Veronica's Impala and made their way into the school.
As he passed, Emmett waved at Veronica, who returned it with a small smile.
"Cute," Jessica whispered. "Come on. We've got to get to the gym. After I'll fix your hair to make it look cute for your lunch date."
"Not a date," Veronica insisted but followed everyone to the building. "There's literally nothing less romantic than a school cafeteria."
"Got enough tots, Winchester?" Mike asked as they moved their way through the food line.
Veronica has double the serving of tots that anyone else had, and she had thought about getting more, but then there wouldn't be room on her tray for a chicken sandwich.

"There's no such thing, Newton," she said, grabbing two bottles of water and handing one to Jessica who was behind her in the line. Then they got in line to pay.
"Hey, looks like Cullen's waiting for you," Mike pointed out.
It was true. Instead of sitting at the table with his siblings, Emmett was a few tables away, sitting alone and clearly waiting for Veronica to join him.
Jessica squealed in excitement as she spotted the boy. She nudged Veronica in that direction slightly. Her excitement amused Veronica because if it had been Edward instead of Emmett interested in her, Jessica would probably be so jealous that she wouldn't even want to be her friend.
"Tell me all about it later."
"Chill, Jess", Veronica said, chuckling.
"Yeah, chill Jess," Mike said, bumping her shoulder. "Come on. Sit with me and let her go off with the walking refrigerator."
Jessica visibly blushed as Mike led her to their normal table, while Veronica laughed at the fridge joke. She then made her way to the table that Emmett was sitting at. People looked at her as she sat across from him, but she didn't give it any thought as she smiled at him. She felt the eyes of his siblings on them as well.
He grinned brightly back at her. "Hey."
"Hi there," she greeted, taking a sip from her water.
"Um, you look really nice today," he complimented, smiling which showed off those cute dimples.
Veronica grinned and looked down at her outfit which wasn't different from anything she'd normally wear — a corduroy skirt and green sweater that fell off her shoulders. It was a cute outfit but it didn't look like she was trying too hard just because she was eating with Emmett that day. "Thank you."
"Thanks for saying yes. Nick had me convinced you were going to say no and then say something mean to make me regret being born."
"I'm not that mean," Veronica said, chuckling. "But Lauren was being a bitch the other day and Jackson was just plain disgusting with that question he asked on the first day. I wouldn't have been that harsh if I'd have said no."
"That's a relief."
"Are you not hungry?" Veronica asked, noticing that he only had a bottle of apple juice in front of him. Of course, she knew why he didn't have a tray of food in front of him. But given how much she ate on the regular, it would make sense for her to ask why he wasn't eating.
"Oh, not really. My mom made this huge breakfast this morning — pancakes, eggs, bacon. I ate a bunch and then immediately regretted it considering we have gym first period," he said, faking a frown.
"That sounds delicious," Veronica said, grinning despite the fact that she knew the breakfast wasn't real. "I have PopTarts for breakfast every morning. I'm not a very good cook, but sometimes I mix it up with toaster waffles to show off my skills."
He laughed as she took a bite of her sandwich. "So, you said that you moved around a lot in class. Where all have you lived?"

Veronica cleared her throat and looked at her wrist as if she was looking at a watch and not her scrunchie. "How long is lunch again" Kidding, but I really did mean it when I said I've been everywhere. We move constantly."
"What's the longest you've ever been at one school for?" he asked, silently hoping that she would be around for quite some time.
Veronica nervously bit her lip. The number of times they moved was rather suspicious, but she also didn't want to lie to him like she had been to everyone else in Forks.
"A little over a month and a half," she hesitantly admitted.
If Emmett had been drinking something, he would have spit it back out. "The longest you've ever lived somewhere is a month and a half?"
Veronica nodded and focused on her tater tots. "My brothers have to travel a lot, so I go with them. I did a few years of online school, but I've been to more schools than I can count."
"S-so are you leaving Forks soon, then?" he asked, frowning.
Veronica smiled again and shook her head. "I talked them into letting me stay here for the rest of my senior year with them sending me money and stuff. That way I can make some friends and just feel normal. I turn eighteen soon, so they both agreed it was okay. They check in obviously, but still have to travel."
"That's nice that they're letting you have some freedom. Your brothers must be pretty laid back. What are they like?"
"Dean's the oldest and laid back is the last word I'd use to describe him," she said, chuckling. "He's the typical big, overprotective, annoying older brother. Though I suppose he's been more like a dad than a brother. We fight a lot because I don't always listen to him. Sam typically has to be the mediator."
"Sounds fun," he said sarcastically.
"Oh yeah. He just loves getting in the middle of screaming matches and trying to calm us down. Surprisingly, he usually succeeds. Dean was so against me living on my own for a few months, but Sam was the one to convince him that I could handle it."
"Are you handling it well?"
"Oh yeah," she said, waving off his worry. "Except for the being a shit cook part. I order a lot of pizza and Chinese food."
"So, what do Sam and Dean do that makes them move around that much?"
"You know, you've asked all the questions," Veronica pointed out. "I've almost finished all my tater tots and haven't gotten to ask you anything."
Emmett's smile almost took her breath away. "Ask away, Veronica."
"How about simple questions? We both answer. What's your favorite color? Mine is pink, though don't tell my brothers or they'll make fun of me."
"I like the sound of that," Emmett said, leaning on the table. "Red. Favorite sport?"
"Lacrosse. I like the more aggressive sports. You?"
"Football."
"Who is your favorite sibling?"
Emmett chuckled. "You sound like you're looking to start trouble with my family."
Veronica pretended to pout. It was a little funny, considering that the odds were high that his family was listening in. "Everyone has a favorite. Sam's my favorite because he doesn't piss me off as much. It's not a bad thing. I still love them both equally and would die for them. Come on."
"It's Rosalie, but that's not a surprise. She's my best friend", he said, smiling. "Nicholas is a close second though. Actually, I think you and Rose would get along well."
"Really?"
"Yeah. She's really into fixing up old cars. I know for a fact she wants to ask you about your car but doesn't want to actually approach you about it."
Veronica chuckled. "I get not wanting to make new friends. Though if she ever wants, I'm down to talk about Oliver at any time. She could even help me work on him."
"Oliver?" Emmett questioned, snorting. "You named that awesome car Oliver?"
Veronica nodded, grinning. "Dean and I have the same car, just different years. He exclusively refers to his as Baby, so I jokingly told him that I named mine Oliver. It just stuck after that. Next question."
"Favorite animal?"
"Dogs. I've always wanted one, but we move around too much. Though we had a stray for a few days." Veronica smiled to herself as she remembered the time that Dean could talk to animals and the German Shepard helped them solve a case. "You?"
"Deer."
"Oh, my Uncle Bobby makes really good deer jerky," she said, finishing her water. "Sorry for talking about eating your favorite animal."
Emmett chuckled. "You're good. It's a tasty animal"
Veronica forced herself not to smile. Clearly, they often ate deer on their vegetarian diet. "Okay, what's your star sign? You give off Aries vibes, but I need confirmation."
"How in the world did you guess that?" he asked, eyes wide.
"I put a lot of stock into astrology," she admitted. "Some people think it's silly but considering I believe in most things, why not the influence that celestial bodies have on humans?"
"What do you mean by you believe in most things?"
Veronica shrugged, knowing she wouldn't give too much away with her answer. "Aliens, Loch Ness, Witches, Werewolves," she listed off. She made sure not to mention Vampires. "The universe is a big place and I think it's a bit presumptuous to think that humans are all there is."
She didn't give Emmett much time to think about her answer before asking for the next question. Emmett's thoughtful smile was suddenly replaced with a mischievous smirk that had Veronica crossing her arms. There was no telling what he would ask.
"What's your favorite song to make out to?"
Veronica groaned while he laughed loudly at her expression. "Oh, Emmett, you were doing so well."
"I'm sorry," he said, chuckling. The bell rang and everyone began to gather their things to head to class. "I just wanted to see your reaction."
"Well," Veronica said, standing and grabbing her tray, "who knows? Maybe one day you'll find out."
Veronica winked at him before leaving him at the table with an open-mouth smile.
