《Edge of Glory | Supergirl 1》Chapter 15

"This is why I'm not nice to people. One compliment, and now you're coasting. What is taking you so long?"
Katie almost dropped what she was doing, "Hey, I'm only an IT girl, you know. I just... The last time I hooked up a live feed was for the high school AV club, okay?"
"Well, the last time I did a live broadcast was to end my award-winning talk show. So you and I are both returning to our roots."
Katie tugged something out, looking at Miss Grant in terror, "I broke something. I'm so sorry, Ms. Grant." Her voice began to stammer, "This isn't gonna work. I..."
"Normally, I would fire you and replace you instantly, but we're short-staffed. So instead I will inspire you. Even I was like you once. Before all of this, I was, well... I was a, um, sought-after media pundit and a celebrated magazine editor. But..."
"That's like me because..."
"Because before that, I was a humble wannabe journalist with the heart of a real journalist. Now, there are real stories out there..."
Cat began to fumble with all of the wires, freaking Katie out, "That's not going to help."
"...and they're not getting reported because Maxwell Lord is sucking up all the air with his negativity."
"And Supergirl's not here to lift everyone's spirits."
"So I will. And you, humble IT girl, will rise to the occasion and help me save this city."
Katie sighs, plugging a wire into a camera, she looked up and jumped, "Oh! Oh! I did it! I did it!"
"You see, Kathy. That's the story. Ordinary people like you, used to doing mundane and small things, finding themselves in the midst of a crisis doing something extraordinary. Heroes. Now, go find someone to do my makeup." Cat tapped the table, "Chop chop."
"For the... Got it. Yeah, okay."
"Actually!" Cat stopped her, "Turn." Katie turned her body around, "You will do, it seems you can do a decent job at makeup, hurry up over here."
🎆~🎆~🎆~🎆~🎆
Leah sat up, "Winn, what is happening?"
Winn flicked the TV on so Leah could see what was going on, "There was an earthquake."
"Oh my God." Leah struggled to stand, her whole body felt extremely sore, "Ugh."
"You have a fever, part of the symptoms tend to be a sore body, so you're not going anywhere." Winn made her lay back down.
"Won't you get sick from being close to me."
"Well I'm used to having fevers, I'll live. You on the other hand."
"I'm fine, Winn, really, I just don't want anyone getting hurt-"
"And I understand that." Winn sighs, sitting down beside her, "But you can't get yourself hurt in the process. I can't lose you, Leah, I just can't."

Leah lifted her hand up to place on his cheek, "I'm not going anywhere, Winn, I'm right here. Always and forever."
"You can't promise me that."
"I know I can't." Leah smiles kindly at him, "But I can promise I'll try my best to do so."
Winn smiled, "I'd kiss you if you weren't sick."
"I know."
🎆~🎆~🎆~🎆~🎆
"People of National City. This is Cat Grant, coming to you from Catco Plaza. We've just, minutes ago, restarted our broadcasting capabilities." Cat sighs, dropping her pen and pulling off her glasses, "Look. We're all suffering through a major disaster. Now, you could react to this crisis by being petty and divisive or preying on other people's fears. And after all, it is human to be selfish. But isn't it also human to face our weaknesses and rise above them? Act like a superhero, even if you aren't one? It's true. Supergirl has not been located yet. But her spirit stays with us, her insistence on seeing the best in people, a call for us to heed our better angels. Supergirl has faith in us. So let's have a little faith in her. Supergirl will return when we need her most. Until then, we need to help each other. Call us, share your stories of heroism. Let's show the world what we're really made of. And, no, we can't do what Supergirl does, but... We must choose to do what we can."
Katie stood behind the camera, feeling goosebumps prick at her skin, Cat's speech was amazing, the perfect thing for the people, it even made her feel like she could be a hero. She had powers, powers that seemed to be connected to the sun, the same as Kara and Leah. Katie paused, she blinked before leaving the room, hacking into the DEO's files. She quickly got the one on Superman and rushed to find Kara who was currently with James. She pushed open the doors, watching as the two pulled apart, "I accessed the DEO file on Superman... And I ran a differential analysis, uh, on the rates at which you might metabolize solar radiation."
"Katie-"
"You know, the long and short of it is basically that you might get your powers back if, um... If they are reignited by a Kryptonian version of extreme adrenaline. Just..." Katie stammered, quickly leaving the room.
"Hey! Katie!" Kara chased after her, "Stop."
Katie pauses, "Kara-"
"I know what you saw in there, but it's not-"
"I don't care Kara, seeing that just made me realize that I'm not going to get a relationship, even if you and James aren't actually together and he is with Lucy. Seeing that in there, made me realize how alone I've always been. Never really have a boyfriend ever, Winn has someone and look at her, she looks like a freaking supermodel. You and Leah live on different levels than me, you are both gorgeous aliens that seems to get so many people to like them, but then there is me. I'm an actual freak. I'm a mutant, Kara, my DNA was messed up when I was born."

"Katie-" Before Kara could speak the building rumbled, shaking below them.
James jogs out, looking at everyone, "Everybody okay?"
"Yeah, yeah, we're okay." An explosion caused everyone to look at each other.
"That wasn't an aftershock, that was an explosion." Kara gasps, her eyes widening.
Katie bit her lip, "It has got to be a gas line."
"I'll check the stairs." James took off.
Katie grabbed the phone, "Please let nobody be up there."
"Yeah. Hello."
Katie curses under her breath, "Of course there's someone up there. Hi, hi, yes. We're just a few floors below you. Help is on the way." Katie moved the phone down, whispering to Kara, "Um, I just lied to an entire floor of trapped people in a burning building, what's our next move?"
James came running back to them, "The stairwell's blocked going up."
"We have to at least get everyone on this floor downstairs," Kara mumbles trying to keep her calm in a horrible situation.
"What about the people upstairs?" Katie questions, keeping hold of the phone.
"The elevator shaft."
Katie transferred the call to someone upstairs using her cellphone, running behind Kara and James, "Yeah, yeah, go to the elevator."
Kara tried to pry the doors open, but of course, she couldn't. James walked in front of her, "I got it."
Kara stuck her head in, "Where are they?"
"Here, here. Oh... Oh, God." Katie had looked over the side, "Why'd I do that?" She heard the yelling over the phone, "Uh, problem. They can't get their elevator door open."
James looked up, "All right, I'm gonna have to climb up and open it from the other side."
"James no, we're 23 floors up."
"I didn't say I was excited about it, okay?"
"James."
"I'll be right back, I promise." James turned his attention back to Katie, "Tell them I'm coming."
"He's coming." Katie tilted her head in just like Kara to watch James as he climbed up, the tension was building, both females were worried about him, but for entirely different reasons. People began to file down, Katie helped the people as they got closer to the door.
"Be careful."
"Here we go." Katie helped them move, "Here we go." She helped more people get out, "I got you." The ground shook again making James lose his balance and fall, he grabbed onto the wires.
"James!"
Katie turned to see the people just staring, "Go! Go get help! Hurry! Go on! Come on! Geez, I thought I panicked under pressure."
"James! Reach for the ladder!" Kara flinched when she saw the wire snapping, her fists tightening, "Reach!"
Katie glanced at Kara, noticing her tightened fists, one in particular, her broken hand was moving, "Kara."
Kara looked down just as the wire completely snapped, Katie screamed as Kara jumped in flying down after him. Kara flew back up, placing James beside Katie. James chuckled nervously, clinging to the wall.
"You almost gave me a heart attack."
"Well, I guess that's what you needed."
Katie smiles, "There's a city out there that really needs you. Go get 'em, Supergirl." She blinked after Kara flew away, "I better go call Winn and tell him about Kara."
Leah and Winn walk into the office, making James purse his lips, "He might already know."
Leah smiles, not longer coughing, "Hey, where is Kara?"
"Saving the city."
"Well, I better go, huh?"
"Yeah." Winn gave her a kiss as she flew out, changing into her suit as she did so.
Katie looked at her brother, "How did she get her powers back?"
"I may have almost fallen out of my window."
"WINN!"
🎆~🎆~🎆~🎆~🎆
Katie pushed the stuff out of Cat's office, Kara tailing behind her, "Katie, are we going to talk about what you said-"
"I think I'm just going to go back to the apartment and sleep, I've had a long day."
"Katie-"
"I'll see you at home, Kara."
Leah walked beside Kara, "What's going on with Katie?"
Kara released an airy sigh, "I'm not entirely sure."
Leah glanced at her mother, "I think we should go talk to her. She did help a lot today with that broadcast."
"Yeah." Kara and Leah walked out getting in their suits, both flying at the side of her door. "I heard your amazing broadcast today. Thank you."
"Thank you for the compliment. Now, where the hell were you two? How could you up and leave in the middle of the worst disaster in decades?"
Leah gave her a small smile, "We didn't mean to scare you."
"Oh, no. You didn't scare me. But regular people, they're starting to depend on you. It's easy for them to feel abandoned. You have to understand that most people out there spend most of their lives feeling isolated and alone. And when a tragedy strikes, they look to their heroes. Not only for rescue, but for solace and consistency."
"That's why we're glad they had you." Kara smiles at her.
Leah flew down so she was standing at the edge, "You gave them hope today. I know that you inspired them because you inspired me."
"You inspire us." Kara corrects, looking down at Cat. Leah had to resist the urge to hug her mother when she saw that bright happy smile on her face. She flew away with Kara, both girls feeling happy. When suddenly they are slammed down into the earth.
Leah groans, standing up from the floor as people surround them, "Who are you?"
"They're with me."
"Astra."
Leah staggered as she stood, "Mom?" She didn't even know her mother was alive.
"My dear daughter and niece. Did you really think this was over?"

To Blunt The Sharpest Claw
The Velvet Paw of Asquith Novels are a series of New Fable genre novels that involve cats and dogs and high adventure and romance and espionage and food-fights and hotels and explosions and car chases. With large casts, exotic locations and an absurdity only possible in the absence of human characters, the Velvet Paw of Asquith Novels blend Wind in the Willows with James Bond, though with more cafes and fewer badgers. This submission is the third title in its Morigan Trilogy, beginning two-thirds of the way through the series' longest adventure yet. Here's a quick recount of what's happened so far: When Oscar Teabag-Dooven, a Velvet Paw of Asquith, is ordered to investigate how a mysterious poet, the Ar'dath-Irr, is able to travel instantaneously around the world, two very bad things happen. Firstly, he meets Lydia, an insane librarian who punches everyone in the face, and secondly, the Ar'dath-Irr reveals he is intent on taking over the world. Although this second thing might be considered worse than the first, Oscar feels differently following Lydia’s destruction of a cafe, a library and his face in one afternoon. In comparison, thwarting world domination just seems easier. Along with Binklemitre, a fellow Velvet Paw of Asquith, and Lydia, Oscar infiltrates the Ar’dath-Irr’s realm of dark poetry to discover the dog not only intends wrenching the world apart but has no intention of cleaning up afterwards. As a result, Oscar decides it’s all too hard and goes home to have a bath. After lots of arguing and the sort of food fight that posh restaurants were invented for, Lydia and Binklemitre convince him that they must stop the Ar’dath-Irr for several reasons, one of them quite serious. A vibrant cast of characters collide as Oscar, Lydia and Binklemitre battle the Ar’dath-Irr and his disciples in an adventure involving exploding cafés and appalling hotels, car chases and inadvertent surgery, dreadful poetry, lots of arguments and at least one temper-tantrum, all of which draw the three into dark and convoluted corners of a world they weren’t aware existed. Moreover, any chance of sitting down and discussing things over some buns disappears when Lydia punches the Ar’dath-Irr in the face. This results in her having a psychotic episode and Oscar getting run over by an ambulance. Although Binklemitre suffers neither, he witnesses both, which is almost as dreadful, though not nearly so messy. An enormous battle ensues, followed by a dinner party and then everything explodes.
