《Edge of Glory | Supergirl 1》Chapter 25

Katie looked over at Kara, then back at the television, then back at Kara. Leah was with Winn, she hadn't even noticed that Kara had a weird doppelganger flying around acting like her. Hank tilted his head slightly to look at her, "Not exactly one for your greatest hits reel."
Alex walked around Hank and over to Kara, "I sent a team to scan the area. No signs of extraterrestrial activity, so we can probably rule out an alien shapeshifter." Alex moved her eyes to Hank adding, "Unless there's something you're not telling us."
Hank put his arms behind his back, "The skirt was surprisingly comfortable, but no."
Katie moved from her spot, leaning her body against the large table, "Who could she be? Is it a clone?"
"Unlikely. Even if an enemy had harvested Kara's DNA when she came out as Supergirl, the embryo would still be in gestation." Alex explains but made Katie just blink a couple times.
Kara pressed her hands against the table, "What about Maxwell Lord?"
Katie's head shot up, nodding as she pointed at Kara, "Could he have done something to the young woman you saw when you broke into his lab?"
"She was comatose, her cerebral cortex functioning was almost nonexistent. Bringing her back to even partial consciousness would be like raising the dead."
"Are you sure?" Kara questions.
"Maxwell Lord does have a God complex. But he's not an actual God."
Katie tapped her fingers against the table, "I have a feeling he has something to do with this though."
🎆~🎆~🎆~🎆~🎆
"Winn, Ms. Grant scheduled a content meeting in her office, but after that, we need to meet." Kara walked past Winn and Leah, sitting over at her desk.
Leah moved her eyes from the screen to her, "Is this about the truck you threw into a mountain?"
"Yes, but..." Kara clears her throat, "Um, that..." She leans in for a whisper, "That was not me."
Winn threw his hands in the air, "Nope. No, not interested." Winn tries to go back to his work, but he quickly turns back to Kara, whispering, "Okay, fine, I'm interested. Who was it?"
Leah turned in her seat, "I need to know now too, why was I not informed when this first happened?"
The elevator door pings, making Kara jump and look at Winn and Leah in terror, "Oh, my God, I forgot... Ms. Grant, I'm sorry, if you'll just give me a minute, I'll go get your latte." Katie walked in holding piles of paperwork in her hand, setting it on her desk with a 'hmph'.
"Oh, I had a little extra time this morning, so I stopped and I got my own." Cat twirled on her heels facing Kara, extending the lattes, "Oh, and I almost forgot, I picked one up for you, too. Spiced pumpkin with extra foam and a little cinnamon sprinkled on top." Katie rose an eyebrow, looking over at Leah in surprise.

"That's actually my go-to." Kara reluctantly took the latte from her, almost afraid it was a trap.
"Hmm." Cat gave her a smile, then noticed the eyes on her. She turned back, heading into her office. Winn dropped his mouth open, giving Kara a 'what the fuck just happened' look. She could only shrug, smelling the latte for poison. Kara followed Cat into her office, getting ready for the meeting.
Katie leaned against her desk, "What on earth was that? Was Miss Grant being nice to Kara?"
Leah slowly nodded her head, "Guys, I'm even terrified right now."
Winn eyes never left Miss Grant's office, "Did something happen yesterday that we're not aware of?"
Leah clapped her hands together, "Oh!" She laughed in amusement, "Kara has a date with Adam, that's why she's acting really nice."
Katie pursed her lips, "This is gonna end well." Her voice was laced with sarcasm, as she sat down to do her paperwork.
Leah and Winn look at each other, then turned to Katie, "So Katie..."
Katie pushed her glasses up the bridge of her nose, looking suspiciously between the two, "What?"
"Leah and I were thinking-"
"That is never a good thing." Katie quickly cut in, her eyes moving back down to her work, pen scrawling over it.
Leah continued to where Winn was cut off, "That you should join a dating app."
Katie put her pen down, raising an eyebrow, "A dating... app?"
"Yeah, to find yourself a dude." Winn playfully punched her arm.
"I will light you on fire."
"Okay..." Winn moved his arm away from his sister, afraid she would actually light him up in the middle of the office.
"Come on, it's not that bad of an idea!"
"It's not a bad idea." Katie responded, her voice was calculated and cold, "It is a horrible one. I will not do that."
"You can meet a nice guy." Leah tried.
Katie heavily sighs, picking her pen back up, "No."
"But-"
Katie stabbed the pen into the paper, "I said no!" The paper ignited into flames on her table. She groaned, extinguishing it with ease.
"Okay, you said no." Winn mumbled, "Jesus..."
James walked out of the meeting, looking at the charred paper, "What happened there?"
"Don't ever tell Katie to join Tinder," Leah warned, making it sound like a joke, which it was. She was teasing Katie now, she thought it was adorable that she got so defensive so fast.
James nodded in confusion, "Oh... okay?"
Kara came out of the room, "Office, now, please." Everyone piled into the elevator as Kara spoke to them, "It's like Invasion of the Body Snatchers. That thing in Ms. Grant's office looks like Ms. Grant. She sounds like Ms. Grant, but... But she's being nice to me in a way Ms. Grant never would."

Leah snorted, "Well, just enjoy it while it lasts."
"Yeah, I'd try but it's hard to enjoy anything when there's a body-double of me flying around the city, making me look bad."
Winn opened the door to their office, "We're on it. What do you need?"
Kara releases a long sigh, "Maxwell Lord had a woman in his lab, she could be tied to this. Can you check local hospitals to see if any comatose patients have gone missing recently? My age, my height, my weight."
"Yeah, yeah. I know all those." James and Leah look at Winn, "What, I measured her for her suit."
"To be more clear, I measured her." Katie raises a finger, "I would never let Winn get anywhere near Kara."
Kara giggles, catching everyone's attention. She turned around to see everyone's eyes on her, "Who's that text from?"
"No one. I... I..." Kara stumbled on her words.
Leah laughs, pointing at Kara, "You are blushing."
"I am not, it's hot in here... You guys aren't hot?"
"You're lying." Katie smiles, leaning her arm against the chair, "I've known you for years. I can tell, there's a thing that you do with your nose."
"Uh, was it that guy?"
"If you must know, it's a text from Adam, confirming our date tonight."
"Uh, Adam Foster? You're going on a date with Cat Grant's son?"
"Mmm-hmm. I mean, Winn is dating her daughter."
"Step-daughter." Leah corrects.
"And who asked who out?" James mused.
"Adam asked me, actually."
Katie pursed her lips, turning her back to them to search on the computer, "That's great." Everyone looked down at her.
Kara fumbled with her sleeve, "It is?"
Katie nodded her head, not looking back at them, "Yeah. I mean, you know, he seems like a... Like a terrific guy, so..."
"You've never even met him," Winn mumbled.
Katie gave her brother a glare, her hands lifting from the keys, "Leah has talked about him enough to me. She says he's a good person, then he's a good person. I trust her judgment. Okay?"
"Okay." Winn reeled back from Katie.
Kara tilted on her heels, "Okay..."
James stumbled up, "I would love to uh, help but- I have to get back upstairs, though. Uh, have a great time tonight."
🎆~🎆~🎆~🎆~🎆
Leah was about to fly and help Kara when she noticed a burning building, "Supergirl, I'll be there as fast as I can. Burning building."
"It's fine. I've got this handled."
Leah flew down at the building, blowing her cool breath until the flames when completely out. She used her x-ray vision to see the building's structural integrity, most of it seemed to be holding up but one part on the top level. She saw a child in there, "Oh God." She flew as fast as she could into the building, she swooped up the child holding her close, "You're gonna be okay."
"I want my momma!"
Leah landed on the ground, searching the crowd of soot covered locals, until a woman came running over, taking the girl from her. "Oh my little girl, my little girl." She looked up at Leah, "Thank you, Captain Marvel, thank you so much."
"It's no big deal. I'll do anything to keep you all safe."
Her com buzzed in her ear, Katie's voice was on the other end, "Captain Marvel, we need you back at the base. Now."
Leah smiled at the little girl, "Have a good day, okay?" She flew into the air and headed to the base. Once she was in she saw Kara walking with Alex, Hank, and Katie, "Is everything okay?"
"Kara encountered her doppelganger tonight."
"What?"
"She's as strong as me. She flies like me, she fights like me, except for the fact that she talks like Cookie Monster, she is exactly like me."
Katie pursed her lips, walking as fast as she could to keep up with them, "Red Tornado was programmed to analyze and mimic your fighting style and velocity. Dr. Morrow is dead, but perhaps his schematics for an Android-"
"No, but she is not an android. That's what I'm trying to tell you. I looked into her eyes and there was someone looking back. She has a soul. And somehow it's like mine." Kara put her hand on the table, "I know you said that a clone was impossible, but Alex, she does not just look like me. She is me."
"The good news is, if she is genetically identical or even similar to you, she has the same weakness. We can use Kryptonite."
"We have to subdue her somehow." Hank caught the disapproving look in both Leah and Kara's eyes, "It's okay. We won't use enough to hurt her."
"Not seriously, anyway..."
"I'll get on it."
Katie sighs deeply, putting her head on the table, "Sometimes I miss being normal."
"But where's the fun in that?" Leah muses, giving Katie a small shrug.

And the world's changed that video games level and classes governed the power system of the new world! What will she do as a weak and fragile girl? Will she get her power back? How will she survive in the harsh world? Author's note: I will update daily if possible and each chapter is around 2,000 words. Gores, Sexual Contents, and Traumatising Contents are limited and I try my best not to write them. However, for the progress of the story, I can't help but write some of them in the latter part of the story. However, don't expect them too much ^_^ English is not my native language, so there might be grammatical errors (maybe a lot), but I'll try to fix them, so constructive critiques will be appreciated (^_^)

The Paths of Magick
Credits: Story by Xcaliburnt. Cover Art by @Bervolart. Magick, the power to bend the laws of reality. All because of a mystical substance known as mana. Mages follow the Paths to achieve power, for there is no more addictive chase. Each Path winds and twists, forcing mages through the flames of adversity and challenge. Though the operative word is "path", the reality is far less straightforward. Instead of a road, Paths are like the branches of world trees, erupting into the heavens, intertwining, and ending in sharp snaps. Only the strongest reach the sky. There are several Paths, and many Ways to walk them—variations of the same Path, and like the stars, they are endless. Magick is the sacred flame that scours the fat, rendering the truest self. Superfluous flesh melting away to show the skeleton of one's being. A chance for ascension—apotheosis. Though not every mage works to godhood, if they survive long enough, It is inescapable. Witness the lives of those that tread the knife's edge of self-destruction. Each one intertwined in their search for answers, revenge, and, most of all: power. These individuals have all lost something precious—irreplaceable—and In search of filling the void left behind, they have taken up the mantle of a mage. Per aspera ad astra. Ad mortem vel divinitatis. (Through adversity to the stars. To death or divinity.) There is no consistent release schedule except my consistent inconsistency. Besides, there’s like a thousand pages worth of content, how can—you already read it? Goddamn. Oh, and there is a very long hiatus between volumes as I intend to edit and rewrite a lot. What to Expect: This story is progression fantasy, so expect a healthy dose of training. It's also heavy on slice of life, and it isn't entirely overarching-plot-driven. Expect characters to live their lives, and not always be on some quest to save the world. There's a lot of magic theory and discussion about it in the story. So, if you don't like impromptu lessons on sorcerous theory by traveling monster slayers, this might not be for you. But if you do like it, rejoice! For there is a lot of it. This is also heavy on prose, purple as a bruised eye. I use outdated, uneccesarily collegiate-level terms and play around with the writing style just for the heck of it. I find it fun to wax and wane poetic, and that might grate on you—I don’t plan to change this aspect of the Paths much if at all. Onto the viewer discretion is advised parts: This is grim-dark/ grim-heart. Take the tags seriously. There will be combat scenes that are brutal and horrifying. Fights to the death tend to be. This is a tale about medieval mercenaries (quite literal killers for hire), man-eating monsters, and eldritch gods beyond the material plane. Beside that, there will be traumatic events that are best left unread. I do not detail certain acts I find heinous enough, instead leaving some parts unwritten but still alludded to if not outright stated; there is simply no graphic narration thereof. This is not for the faint of heart.
