《TNS Piper Season 8 (Must Read)》Oneshot #6: Riley in labour

Piper's POV:
"How about this one?" I asked Riley, holding up a tiny grey onesie, with the word 'Superstar' on it. She didn't know the gender of the baby yet because she and James wanted to be surprised.
"Nah, we've got plenty of grey outfits. What about that one, over there?" She asked as she pointed to a similar onesie but baby blue.
"Aww, that one's cute." I replied as I added it to the basket. Riley and I were doing some more shopping for the baby; she was due in a couple month or so.
"You know, I can't wait for the baby to arrive. I hope it's a girl." I said to Riley for the hundredth time, as we strolled through the countless baby aisles. "I think you're more excited for this child than me!" She replied, as we laughed and continued to shop.

"Where's James gone?" I asked when we arrived back home. "He went to go pick up the carseat." Riley replied as I nodded, and we both sat down.
"Can I please pack the baby's hospital bag?" I pleaded, giving her my best puppy dog eyes. "Sure, Pipes, but don't go over the top, with the outfits." She said whilst laughing as I giggled sheepishly, and nodded.
"I'll facetime Amy too. She wanted to come over and help but she had to go to her cousin's house." I said as Riley nodded, patting her stomach and grimacing a bit. "Are you okay?" I asked, sitting back down.
"Yeah, I'm good. My stomach just aches." She replied, as I gave her a warm hug. "Let me know if it gets worse. Okay?" I responded as she nodded again. With that, I ran up the stairs and pulled out a small red suitcase.
I facetimed Amy, who excitedly helped me pick out the outfits that we should take for the baby, as we tried our hardest to not go overboard. After a while, Amy had to go but it was alright as we had finished.
Zipping up the suitcase, I set it down next to Riley's one and nodded my head to myself in satisfaction, until I heard a scream.
"Piper!!"
Riley's POV:
I shook my head and laughed as I watched Piper dash up the stairs, in excitement.
As I was watching tv, James called to tell me how the store messed up our order and how he had to wait for them to get the right one. I just laughed and continued to rub my stomach.

As time went on, my stomach kept on aching, progressively getting worse. I got up and walked around to try and settle the pain but when I got back to the living room, I felt something in my stomach drop and an intense pain took over my lower abdomen.
It felt like a cramp but much, much worse. I screamed as I doubled over. "Piper!!" I yelled, panic taking over.
I heard her sprint down the stairs but in that moment, I was focused on taking deep breaths to try and relieve some of the pain.
"What's wrong?" She asked frantically, as I put up a finger, signalling that I needed a minute to catch my breath. After some few seconds, the pain finally dulled down into an ache.
"I don't know what happened. I was fine like a minute ago. It was really sudden." I said, standing up straight again. "Maybe it was a contraction." She suggested as I gave her a look.
"Oh, don't pretend that we didn't spend 3 weeks watching 'One born every minute' on repeat. I know all the medical terms now." She said, smiling, as I laughed, stopping when the pain began to intensify.
"No it's not that, it's the fact that it can't be contractions 'cus I still have about two more months until the baby's due." I replied as she looked away in thought before agreeing with me.
We made to sit down on the couch but as we moved, I felt another intense pain take over my stomach, though this time more sharper.
I cried out and clutched my stomach, as Piper tried to console me by rubbing my back.
"What's happening? You don't think it's the baby, do you? It can't be, it's too early! Something's definitely wrong!" I shouted out in panic.
"Calm down, Ri and take deep breaths. Let's not jump to conclusions, yet. We won't know if you're in labour until your waters-" Piper started, trying to think logically whilst calming me down, but she was interrupted by a quiet splash, as we both looked down to see a puddle of water on the floor, in between my legs.
"-break." She finished off, as I groaned at the returning ache. "Pipes, what do we do? It's too early, something must be wrong." I wailed, panic settling in once again.
"Don't worry, Ri. You lie down and continue to take deep breaths. I'm gonna start calling people." She replied, as I groaned and tiredly nodded.
Piper's POV:
I quickly grabbed my phone and dialed James's number. After explaining the situation to him, I called her mum, Hadley, and my mum, who both work together.

I winced slightly as Riley's grip on my hand tightened as her contractions worsened. James and our parents arrived soon after and I ran upstairs to grab the bags; as I was there, I hit Emily's number.
"Hey Pipes, what's up?" She asked. "Hey Em, Riley's in labour and you've gotta come home!" I rushed out. "I knew it! I knew that as soon as I left on this trip, something good would happen!" She exclaimed as I laughed slightly, still worried by Riley's cries of pain.
We said our goodbyes and I loaded the bags into the trunk, all of us setting off for the hospital.
When we finally got to the hospital room, the doctor said that Riley was already 7cm along but she couldn't start pushing until she reached 10cm, so she gave her gas and air to relieve some of the pain.
Not long after, she reached 10cm and had to begin pushing. She was scared but we all kept encouraging her to keep going.
"I can't do it anymore!" She wailed, as tears streamed down her face. "Yes you can, babe. You've got this." James said, as he kissed her forehead. He held the gas and air in her mouth as I placed a wet flannel on her head.
"Just one more push, darling, then your baby will be here!" The doctor called out to her as she squeezed mine and James's hands tightly, sighing in relief when the doctor held up the tiny infant.
"It's a girl!" She said, as we all screamed in delight. James cut the cord and the doctor handed the baby to Riley. "Have you guys decided on a name?" She asked, as James smiled and nodded.
"Yeah, we decided that if it's a girl, her name will be Adalyn Bree Flanagan." Riley replied with a large, warm smile on her face.
It was beautiful, looking at my brother and his family; a tear was about to slip from the corner of my eye, as I sniffled but when the doctor took Adalyn to weigh her, the monitors started beeping like crazy again.
"Riley, some doctors are going to come in. Don't panic, it's just that it seems like you've got another baby waiting to come out." The doctor stated, hitting the red emergency button, as we all gaped at her in shock; other nurses walking into the room.
No wonder Riley went into labour so early. She's having twins! I'm going to have twin nieces!
The excitement died down a bit as Riley started screaming again, but 6 pushes later, another little girl was gently placed into Riley's arms.
"What's her name?" The doctor asked softly. "Aria Naomi Flanagan." She replied tenderly, as she gazed, adoringly, at the two, tiny infants in her arms, who were currently sleeping.
"Those are some really beautiful names that you guys have chosen." The doctor replied making James and Riley smile. "Yeah, we wanted names that were unique." James said gently, as his and Riley's eyes glistened with unshed tears at the sight of their newborn babies.
》》》
The next day was Monday and A troupe were coming to visit later on but in the meantime, they facetimed Riley and James to say congratulations and to see the twins, who were in their hospital cribs.
Finn excused himself from rehearsals and came all the way to the hospital just to see the babies, which Emily would not have allowed but she was still on her flight and Nick was a lot more lenient.
"They're so cute!" He gushed when he arrived, as we all laughed. "Hi Adalyn and Aria! I'm Finn, your uncle!" He said in a baby voice, as him and I played with the babies.
"You know Pipes, I can't wait until you and I get married and have our own children." He said happily before continuing to pull silly faces at the probably confused kids.
A subconscious smile made it's way to my face at the thought of marrying Finn and having a child, but obviously that would be in the far future.
"Yeah, me neither." I whispered. I don't think he heard me but Riley did. She mouthed the word, "aww" and made love heart signs with her hands as I laughed.
I turned back to the babies and cooed at them, playing with their tiny fingers. They were so small and cute and I was ecstatic to have them as my nieces.
My mind began to wander as to what the future would hold but that could wait. Right now, I was enjoying the time I had with the babies before A troupe would come and hog them!

With one foretold hero brutally snuffed out, another will inevitably arise. For Aleyr, the cycle only further embitters her towards the gods of good and all those who serve them. But the truth is that her downfall might be something much closer to home than their prophecies, those last dregs of mortality beating inside her own chest.
