《Her Terrifying Love》Part 7

Through the murky woods, Jack carried Keenan by his wrists, Lyla gripped the corpse's ankles above his scuffed boots. They staggered blindly, gasping for breath. The wet leaves and moss coating the forest floor made the arduous trek all the more challenging.
She slipped then wheezed, "I don't think... I can go... much further."
A few yards away, hazy moonlight filtered through the trees illuminating what appeared to be the crest of a hill.
"Come on," Jack urged. "Just a little farther."
Lyla desperately wanted to be finished with this dreadful task, but she had run out of gas. She released Keenan's ankles. Dead legs slapped the hard ground.
Jack let go of Keenan's wrists and looked at her with concern. "Are you okay?"
She barely had enough energy to nod.
Behind her, a limb snapped followed by rustling through the brush. Dozens of panic-driven fragments of thought ricocheted inside her head. She whipped around, lost her balance, and landed in a blanket of leaves.
"Who's there?" she cried out in a weak voice.
No response.
Jack helped her to her feet. "Probably just a raccoon. Maybe a deer," he assured her.
She glanced over her shoulder and shuddered when she saw a massive deer standing in the shadows.
"What is that?"
"What? What are you looking at?"
She realized that what she'd thought was a rack of antlers was a tangle of branches from a fallen tree.
"Nothing. I just thought..." She wiped her trembling hands on her jeans.
"I haven't seen any cars," she said. "Up on the road,... have you?"
He shook his head. "I can't see the road. We're too far down."
A piercing ringtone rang out. Lyla's throat clamped shut. Jack's wide eyes stared at a cell phone, nearly buried in the sticky leaves. Keenan's cell phone illuminated the incoming caller: JOJO.

"Somebody's looking for him!" Jack panicked. "Come on," he said. "If we get caught moving this body..."
Lyla needed no additional motivation. She seized Keenan's cold ankles. They dragged the corpse to the edge of the hill, which overlooked a ravine.
"Okay. Let go." He placed his foot on Keenan's body and gave it a shove.
She peeked over the ridge as the corpse thrashed through the dark thicket and stopped abruptly.
Jack squinted through the blackness. "I don't see him."
She pointed. "I think he rolled down into that crevasse."
"Yeah, yeah, I think I see him now. Let's move his car and get the hell out of here."
Lyla eyed Jack. He was scarcely recognizable, his face lined with worry and grief. He dusted plant debris from his wool cap.
"I'll drive," she offered. "My DNA is already in that car. If they find traces of you in there..."
"You okay to drive?"
She nodded, hoping that adrenaline would continue to override the effects of the drug.
He picked up Keenan's cell phone and handed it to her. "Maybe leave this in his car."
They climbed back up, up, up toward the cars. The steep hillside seemed to rise forever before it opened up onto the road. Lyla's legs were becoming rigid, her lungs burned from the exertion.
The moment she slid behind the steering wheel of Keenan's car, an overwhelming smell filled her nostrils. She jerked her head around to ensure that he wasn't sitting in the back seat. Of course, he wasn't. His body was wedged inside a narrow rock opening almost a half hour's hike from the road. But the car reeked of Keenan, an unmistakable cocktail of perspiration, weed, beer, and some cheap cologne he'd apply to attempt to disguise the odor.

Jack drove past the car, signaling Lyla to follow.
Their first sighting of another vehicle came almost five miles from the accident scene. A speeding pickup truck roared past, traveling in the opposite direction, leaving behind a trail of loud country music. She watched the pickup disappear in the rearview mirror.
Jack steered his car to the shoulder of the road then waved her forward, directing her to drive Keenan's car to the edge of the steep embankment.
"Put it in neutral and get out," he instructed.
Just as she exited the car, Keenan's phone rang. She yelped and clutched her chest. It was another call from JoJo. She turned off the phone, tossed it onto the floor, and bolted out of the car.
She watched Jack at the rear bumper as he pushed the car forward. The car rolled down the rugged hillside, accelerating as it bounced wildly through the darkness. The sounds of breaking glass and bending metal reverberated off the rocky topography.
And then silence. The deed was done.

Immovable Mage
What do you call a mage incapable of casting spells? In this story, we usually call him Terry. When the boy is accepted into Arcana Academy, his talent in the pillars of mana foundation awes everyone. All the bigger is the eventual disappointment when Terry turns out to be an utter failure at spellwork. Diagnosis? Major aspect impairment. No cure. Ever. Faced with expulsion, Terry is blessed with the unexpected kindness of others. Terry loses his spot in the Academy but in exchange, he finds a home with a family. Terry starts to train as a pure mana cultivator but never stops looking for his own path as a mage – day after day, season after season, always searching for compatible spellwork… Until finally, Terry’s perseverance earns him a single spell – the only spell he will ever be able to cast. Disclaimers: Chapter Frequency: I aim for one chapter a week. Chapter Length: I try to keep chapters between 3000 and 6000 words. Binge Preference: I plan for 30 chapters per arc. If you want to binge a complete arc, then that is the number to wait for. I will also add a line to chapters indicating the beginning and end of an arc. Advanced Access: I have created a patreon page with early access to four chapters for patrons. What to Expect: Progression fantasy with a western fantasy setting and with eastern fantasy elements. A main character that is forced to explore a very narrow path of magic due to a permanent condition. A main character that is a part of a larger cast. A main character that is growing but won't become the strongest around anytime soon. A story following a single main character but with introduction or theme setting scenes without the main character. What Not to Expect: Edgy grimdark characters – I will never write a sexual violence scene or gory descriptions of torture. I hate reading it and I would hate writing it even more. Romance – romantic relationships will never be the focus of the story and only appear in the background. The main character is preoccupied with other stuff. Other forms of relationships (family, friends, companions) play a bigger role. Cover: The cover art was commisioned from redditor Linh-Nguyen87. The font is alita brush by Inovatype Typefoundry. The Twin Lands
Join our heroine Enru on her journey in a world where humanity lives in perpetual light and warm while their enemies, the spider beings called Araxin, live in perpetual darkness and cold. Just because they live in the darkness and cold though doesn’t mean the Araxin want to stay there forever however, and this time their bid for the Southern half of the continent looks to be shaping up worse for humanity than ever before. Every ten years the planet nears its second sun in such a way that the Northern half of the continent warms and thaws and the Araxin enter a period of explosive growth, before always attempting to assault the humans in the South. Through events that you will need to read and discover yourself, sixteen year old Enru ends up vital to the survival of humanity, but can she succeed? In a world full of humans, dragons, giant intelligent spiders, trogs, behemoths lurking in the deep, magic, politics (can’t forget the politics) and more, what wonders await you? NOTE: This is my very first attempt at writing ever. Not just my first attempt I am showing people or my first attempt that went anywhere, but my first of any kind. I welcome constructive critisism and I know my grammar is not always the best. If something is majorly bothering you please leave a good comment or review on it rather than just a 0.5 rating and saying I suck. NOTE2: The main character will be gaining power that is, if used correctly, well above the standard for her race however I plan to implement it in such a way that she does not end up being crazy over powered and able to end every fight at her whim. She will struggle, she will lose sometimes and there will be loss along her journey to save her race. There will be no harem and I am unsure if there will be any sex scenes or even romance as this is my first story and I am not confident yet at being able to write that properly. So if you came here for the standard royalroad super OP guy that flies around having sex with every female character he meets, this is not that. Update Frequency: As this is my first story and I am still in the early stages, I cannot say how often updates will be. I lead a very busy life and this is a new way for me to relieve stress. I hope to be able to put out a few thousand words every few days at the least. Enjoy the story! PS. Cover was found on the website thedailybell.com, they did not source where they found it. I rotated and resized the image.
