Chapter Seven
Saved
I woke up that night in Chris's arms as he was carrying me to the jeep.
"Stay here baby alright?" he pleaded. He sounded worried.
"Huh? Why? What's wrong?" I asked while rubbing my eyes.
"Nothing. Everything is fine. Just stay here okay?"
"Okay" I said hesitantly.
I watched Chris as he walked away from the jeep toward another guy who was yelling at him.
Jay. And he was drunk. Very very drunk.
Jay was walking towards Chris screaming at him about how I'm "property of him" and that Chris should keep his hands off of me.
Jay walked up to Chris and shoved him. But he didn't move Chris very far. That's when I got out of the car and ran towards them.
"Jay!!!! Stop!!!!" I screamed in plea.
"You little slut!! Break up with me and you're already sleeping with another man!!!" Jay slurred.
I held Chris back with all of my might so he wouldn't punch Jay's lights out.
"Jay, that was nine months ago. Plus, you're the one who cheated on me!!" I screamed in rage.
"Come on baby. Come back home with me. I need to get you away from this jackass he's obviously a bad influence" Jay said while looking at Chris.
There was no way I could hold Chris back anymore. This guy was a thousand times stronger than me. If he wanted to hit Jay, he was going to.
Chris lunged at Jay and began punching him repeatedly.
"CHRIS!!!!! STOP PLEASE!!!" I screamed at him tears filling my eyes.
Chris got up off of Jay, hit him one last time and came back and began to lead me towards the jeep.
"Don't you come near me or Nicole ever again, you got that asshole?" Chris yelled.
Hearing him swear made me fearful. He was angry.
"Don't tell me what to do" Jay replied.
"I'm gonna. And you're gonna listen. Now as I said, you got it?" Chris spat.
"Yeah whatever" Jay concluded.
Chris began walking me back to the jeep and tried to get my tears to stop.

"I know how to get you to stop cryin" he said.
He walked in front of me and crouched down.
"Hop on" he smiled.
I laughed and jumped into his back and wrapped my arms around his neck. He walked us back to the jeep and flipped me around and held me bridal style before spinning me around a few times and setting me into the passenger seat.
He closed the door and walked over to his side of the truck. He climbed in and started the engine.
We pulled away from the hill and began our drive home.
When we pulled into my driveway, he got out and opened the door for me. I took his hand and jumped out of the truck. He picked me up bridal style once again and spun me around before giving me a kiss goodnight.
I waved goodbye and stepped inside the house to see Lena and Kara sitting in the kitchen with my mum talking and laughing each of them with a mug of tea in their hands.
"Hey guys" I muttered awkwardly.
"Hey!!!" Kara answered.
They both ran over and gave me a giant group hug.
"What are you guys doing here?" I questioned.
"Well, we heard about Mr. Military Man so we had to come over and get all of the details." Lena answered.
I sighed and they followed me up to my room.
I told them everything. Including what happened with Jay tonight. I really did love Chris. I was just terrified because he would be leaving soon.
"You love him don't you" Lena stated.
A small smile made its way onto my face.
"Yeah" I managed.
"I can tell" she smiled "whenever you talk about him, your eyes light up and you talk like he's your world"
"But..I just met him"
"Doesn't matter" Kara said "you can love someone in a day and it's the same as it will be a month later, and the same as it will be in a year"
"He's leaving in September and he might not come back" I weeped.

"I know honey. It's hard. But he'll come back for you. I promise." Lena comforted.
"I'm scared" I whimpered.
"Shhh it's alright" Kara said.
They both hugged me and decided to call Chris to help ease my fear.
"Hello?" he answered. His sweet southern voice groggy.
"Hey Chris? This is Lena. I'm one of Nicole's best friends. We also have Kara here. So uh Nicole is taking this whole 'you having to leave next month' pretty hard and we called to see if you could maybe help with that, because Kara and I don't know really what to say" Lena said into the phone while holding me.
"I'm on my way" he said. And he hung up the phone.
Lena set the phone down on my bed and wrapped her other arm around me while I leaned back on Kara who was playing with my hair.
In about ten minutes, a tired and guilty looking Chris was standing at my bedroom door.
"Hey baby doll"
I sat up and ran over to him when I really broke down. I sobbed into his arms as he stroked my hair.
"Don't cry darlin because then you're gonna make me cry" he chuckled a tear rolling down his cheek.
I stood up and wiped his tear and he wiped mine.
"I'm sorry" I started "but....I.....don't know what to do. What if you don't come back?" I said, another tear rolling down my cheek.
"Well, I know that I can't promise anything but, I'm gonna try my very very very best to come back for you. And if worst comes to absolute worst, I'll still be watchin you. I'll always be by your side. Nothing will take me from you alright?" he said, choking up a little.
I stood on my toes and wrapped my arms around his neck and he wrapped his arms around my waist and we held each other like we'd never ever let go.
He gave me a quick kiss on the cheek and he sat down on my bed with his back against the headboard. I went and sat with him, my back against his chest with his legs on either side of me. Kara layed down on my chaise and Lena made herself comfortable in my chair.
We all talked for hours until I fell asleep on Chris and not too long later the girls and Chris also fell asleep.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
To be honest, I didn't know what to do about me going away.
She had obviously been thinking the same as I was but I had to stay strong and act like I was 100% confident that I was going to make it back okay.
But, I've done several tours. And I never know if I'm going to come home afterwards. And I always do. So I must be here for a reason.
I have witnessed many accidents that I barely made it out of.
A few years back, we were doing a training exercise when, right where I was standing seconds ago, a bomb went off. I would've been blown to kingdom come.
And another time, about five years ago, I was in a plane with one of my buddies bringing supplies back to our base when we were shot right out of the sky. I grabbed my friend and jumped out of the falling plane.
We landed in a small lake 500 yards from the base and left the scene with minor burns.
I had made it out of so many awful situations and I never knew why I made it out when so many others didn't.
Then, the Captain suggested that I take a break for the summer. So, I drove for a while and found Beckton.
And then I found Nicole and I realized why I had made it out of those terrible ordeals.
Nicole Collins was my reason for surviving such terrible times.
She, even before I knew her, saved me.
A Wheel Inside a Wheel
Two brilliant young me, Reinhard von Musel and Yang Wen-li, are forced to flee the countries of their birth and become refugees on opposite sides of a century long galactic war. While they both struggle to adapt to their new lives, their obvious talent propels them to the forefront of the war. Their choices will shape their adoptive homelands forever, and their clash will decide the future of the galaxy. This story is broken up into volumes, each following one half of the conflict. You can read them in chronological order, or you can follow just Yang or Reinhard. See individual descriptions below. Part One - Speaking in Tongues When Yang Wen-li’s father dies, the only thing that he inherits is a mountain of debt, which can only be paid off with fifteen years of his life. Wanting to escape that indentured servitude, Yang flees his homeland and takes up a false identity in the Galactic Empire, a hyper-stratified society where stepping out of line is punishable with imprisonment or death. Yang enrolls in the Imperial Officers’ Academy to study history, but despite his unusual and unmistakeable talent as both a tactician and a scholar, his classmates resent him for being a visible outsider. When tensions at the school boil over and several of Yang’s classmates attempt to murder him, Yang finds an unlikely ally in the top student in the class: the aloof Oskar von Reuenthal. But Reuenthal and Yang both have secrets, secrets which could destroy both their lives and their newfound friendship. [70k words, complete] Part One (Alternate) - Talking Without Speaking When Oskar von Reuenthal enrolls at the Imperial Officers' Academy, he doesn’t expect to make real friends. The IOA is a competitive place, and Reuenthal has never been well liked. But when a foreign student shows up to challenge him for the top spot in the class, Reuenthal can’t look away. [77k words, complete] Part Two - Life out of Balance When Reinhard von Musel's mother learns that her husband is about to sell her daughter to become the concubine of the Kaiser, she takes her two children, Reinhard and Annerose, and flees to the Free Planets Alliance, where the three of them must start a new life. [129k words, complete] Part Three - Servants of the Pharaoh Now an officer in His Majesty's fleet, Yang Wen-li struggles to maintain his principles in the face of everything that is expected of him. When he's unwillingly drawn into the politics of the court, he has to use all of his talents to keep himself and his new friends out of danger. [173k words, complete] Short - Whatever It Takes to Keep the Body Warm After their falling out, Reuenthal and Mittermeyer are both posted to the brutal wasteland of Capche-Lanka. It's difficult to hold a grudge when you're just trying to survive. [23k words, complete] Short - Keep the Home Fires (Burning) Three soldiers. Two bodies to be buried. One haunted house. [33k words, complete] Part Four - Lighting Out for the Territories While his sister has joined the fierce Rosen Ritter regiment, Reinhard's fame has earned him a post stuck on Phezzan. Instead of getting to fight, he's caught up in a web of secrets, including the shelter and care of a mysterious refugee from the Empire. Separated from everyone he cares about, Reinhard is forced to make some unexpected allies, and make connections with old friends. [147k words, complete] Part Five - Serpent's Mouth, Serpent's Teeth After having sacrificed his freedom to save his best friend's life, Yang must figure out how to win, and not just survive, the largest civil war in human history.
