《Whodunnit 2》Chapter 9 - Down The Ol' Chimney

The guests of the Heaven Honour Resort woke up that next morning to the high pitched noises of the main resort fire alarm.
Before most of the guests could even get out of their rooms, Giles roared from the bottom of the marble spiral staircase.
"Outside everybody, please."
The butler waited at the bottom of the staircase until one guest wasn't present, and waited outside. He knew that this meant something. The fire alarm definitely couldn't have been a coincidence. Chantal or Colton was dead.
The group was outside of the resort by the time that sunrise had occurred. The scenery was amazing but that was the last thing which was on the guests' mind, they were concerned with the welfare of the guests. They didn't really know for sure if this was a normal run of the mill fire alarm, or if this was the death call of one of the scared guests.
"What's going on?" Jeremy demanded answers from the British butler. The director was already a cold person, but the unexpected early wake-up call was just fuel to fire.
Giles stood in silence, not really knowing for sure what was going on. Nothing was confirmed.
"Giles. Was this set off by the killer?" Kendra asked in a tired yawn.
"Guests, I know as much as you do at the moment. We will just have to wait this out." Giles tried to calm the guests down in his trained butler persona. The professional knew how to keep his voice projected, yet not firm or condescending.
The ten guests waited outside for almost ten more minutes. It didn't take any genius to realise that one of them was missing.
"Where's Colton?" Mary asked after scanning the group quickly.
The group tried to call out his name but to no avail. For now, Colton was missing.

Brett & Chantal embraced a short distance away from the bulk of the group. The two were glad that they were both still together at the resort. Even though this knew that Colton must be dead, Brett really didn't care. He trusted Chantal a lot more than Brett while he was in the majority alliance. Something seemed sketchy to the singer about the business student.
Just as the group (plus Giles) were starting to get fed up with waiting outside in their bed attire, Sophie the maid suddenly came strolling out of the resorts front doors and towards the group.
"Apologies guests, we had an unfortunate malfunction with one of our fire alarms. After much evaluation, we have assessed that it is safe to re-enter into the resort." With her short speech finished, Sophie turned with her heel and returned back to the main resort building.
The guests all looked around at each other uncomfortably. The group didn't necessarily know if they could trust the maids' judgment. How did she know for sure it was safe to re-enter? However, the guest who was most worried was Chantal. After the short speech from the maid, there was no mention of Colton. So he had to have still been alive, right? It's a possibility he could have just slept through the fire alarm.
However, seeing the early hour, the group decided to re-enter the resort through the great room. However, before they could re-scale the staircase, Sophie stopped the guests.
"Breakfast will now be served in the parlor, please enter."
Some guests have some questionable looks to the maid.
"At 6 AM?" Grace questioned.
"What's going on here?" Mike had an uneasy feeling about what was happening. The whole situation left him not at ease.
With persistence from Giles, the group all eventually sat in the parlor and waited for breakfast to be served to them. For most of the guests, this had been the first time they had actually spent a prolonged amount of time in the parlor. It was pretty stunning, the small room had a lot of similar characteristics of the parlor from the two previous Rue Manor games.

It had the same pool table, same bar, same curtains, same furniture. But a new addition with an old furnished chimney. The wide chimney bottom had several wooden logs along with baskets of back-up wooden logs to the side of it for refills. The fire was only slightly going, with only a tame flame rising from the logs.
Eventually, breakfast was served. But it wasn't soon until everything changed.
Kristina only just bit into her croissant until the group all heard a loud, yet slightly muffled sound.
Thud
The group all whipped their heads around to the core of the noise. It had come from the bottom of the chimney. Ash had pooled out causing a small cloud of smoke to blur the vision of what happened.
"What the hell was that!" Grace instantly rose from her seat on one of the many couches of the parlor.
The group all stared in a stunned silence until the ash evaporated. The group soon noticed a body. The body was face up, at the bottom of the chimney. The expression on the face looked diabolical, almost like they had been frozen stiff during a shock. It was also clear to see that it was Colton Rhodes' body. The third victim of the killer.
The group all erupted into screams and yells as they tried to adapt to the shocking scene.
Giles came rushing in and soon split the alive guests from the deceased at the bottom of the chimney.
"Guests, please into the great room!"
The group was clearly shaking as they stood motionless in the great room, next door to the parlor.
Giles took his moment to speak.
"The next round of this game is now beginning. You should all know the rules now, I'll be back in five minutes to hear which areas you will be attending."
As Giles walked out of the great room, the ten guests were left to their emotions.
-
"I feel sick," Jeremy commented as he surrounded himself with his group of Troy & Kristina.
-
"I'm so glad I didn't die. But he didn't deserve that." Chantal could barely stand as she tried to discuss what area she wanted to go to with Brett.
-
"These deaths are getting more and more brutal. I don't think I can handle this much longer." Mary also sounded on the verge of puking as she stood around with Mike, Kendra, Cecilia & Grace.

How was he supposed to live a life of peace and luxury if the Hero couldn’t stop the end of the world!? Donning a mask, Cyrus took up mentoring the Hero himself; how hard could it possibly be? . . . Four years later, the kind jack-of-all-trades hero Leon had become a twisted powerhouse: alienating his party members, clearing enemy encounters in a single magical blast, and coldly ignoring the affections of the girl whose love would have allowed him to clear the final boss. He seemed to have plastered himself to his Master’s side, instead. Cyrus bit back his despair while the hero reached out to grasp his hand. “Please stop ignoring the saint, Leon; you can't beat the Demon King by grinding stats! You need the power of love, remember?” “Don’t worry, Master,” Leon smiled as he traced the lines of Cyrus’s palm gently, almost reverently. “I have all the love I need.” VDL is two parts plot and worldbuilding, one part slow-build gay romance, starring a man far too proud to admit he's in over his head and the hero who loves him. Should be updating weekly.
