Like Rome, I watch the empire I built collapse around me. I desperately cling to the remains, unable to piece it back together. The asphalt sifts through my fingertips as I search for answers. Was it me? Am I responsible for my own downfall? Or is it their fault for pulling the trigger when I handed them a loaded gun? I gave them exactly what they wanted, a target. Are they to blame when I already tore myself apart at their feet? I stood still as they pressed the silver blade against my spine, sealing my fate. I allowed the knife to pierce my skin with nothing but a wince. I knew what to expect, yet I waited patiently for my blood to spill in their hands.
