《Royal Jester》5. Anastasia

Maybe Ana was just out of the loop on regular interactions with people her age but she was sure that a grown man chasing after another grown man wasn't normal. She supposed she should have been used to it - having lived in the dorm for almost three weeks now - but she was somehow still surprised to see Mason tackling Josh to the ground in the living room.
"Do I even wanna know," Ana sighed as she side stepped the two currently wrestling on the floor.
"Paris," Josh shouted with a grin, "Good morning!" His face was suddenly shoved into the rug and Ana cringed as he tried to shove himself away from Mason.
"Morning Josh," she smiled. While he was most certainly one of the most bizarre people she had ever met, he was also one of the nicest. He was always the first to greet her in the mornings and would even usually offer to walk her to class. Ana almost always declined. "Don't you two have class in twenty minutes?"
They both froze.
"Fuck," Mason scrambled off the floor to look at the watch resting on his wrist. "Come on you ass," he reached down to pull Josh up off the ground. "You're gonna make us late. Again."
Ana laughed to herself as she moved to pull open the front door. "Wait," Josh suddenly grabbed her wrist and she paused her movements to look at him. "Let's go together," he beamed.
"My class is earlier than yours; I have to be there in less than ten minutes." Ana explained as she leaned back against the door.
"I can be ready by then," he reasoned.
She hummed softly, pretending to think about it as she watched his smile slowly fade. "You have five minutes," she replied and giggled as he practically sprinted out of the living room to get to his bedroom.
She sat on the couch, only remembering Mason was still in the room when she saw him standing across from her. "Jesus fuck," he blurted as he toyed with a random item in his hands. Ana was pretty much used to the random swearing by now so she didn't even question that but she was slightly curious to know what he was holding.
On closer inspection; was that- was he holding-, "Why do you have a whoopee cushion?"
Mason glanced down at said item, eyebrows furrowing as though he had forgotten he was even holding it. He looked back up at Ana with a sly smile, "The real question is why don't you have a whoopee cushion?"

"I don't have time for your strange mind games right now," she rolled her eyes with an annoyed exhale. She really shouldn't have even bothered asking; Mason reveled in Ana's irritation and would do almost anything to cause it.
"You have five whole fucking minutes actually," he gave her a smug look. "I think that's more than enough time to listen to my mind games."
"I never expected that our first interaction would be my favorite," Ana absentmindedly noted.
"Oh? You have a favorite moment of us? I'm so touched," Mason placed his hand over his heart with a pout.
"By favorite I meant least hated," she corrected with a pointed look.
Mason shook his head with a wry chuckle. "Yeah yeah, whatever you say. Still, your favorite moment of me also happens to be when I was naked? Fucking weird as hell if you ask me."
"That's not what I meant and you know it," Ana rolled eyes for what felt like the twentieth time that morning. "That was literally the only time you've ever been nice to me but now that I know the real you it's the only good memory I have," she feigned a sad sigh.
"Right," he drawled. "As if you aren't obsessed with me."
"Obsessed with seeing you embarrass yourself? Maybe. Obsessed with you as a person? Never happening."
"My naked body embarrassing? As if."
Ana hummed with a shrug, not denying or confirming anything he was saying.
"You didn't even see anything. Unless you did," he gasped suddenly as if the thought alone mortified him. "Pervert!" She hadn't actually seen anything at all, something he knew too, but semantics.
"Who's the pervert?" Josh reentered the room, noticeably having changed from his pajamas (which was just a pair of boxers) into a more presentable outfit.
"Me apparently." Ana stood from her spot on the couch, brushing off her skirt and straightening her clothing in the process.
"Sweet little ole' Paris?" Josh looked genuinely shocked at even the prospect. "Come on Paris; we need to get away from the crazy." He pulled open the front door for her, gesturing for her to walk through first.
Ana gave Mason one last glare, "Gladly."
"Have fun," Mason exclaimed just as Josh let the door fall closed behind them. Ana pressed the button to call down the elevator as Josh stepped alongside her. When the elevator doors opened Ana smiled upon seeing another person already on.
"Hey Ally," she greeted as she stepped inside.

"Oh hi Paris," she smiled in return. "And josh," she threw her a confused look as Josh stood next to Ana. "How'd you two meet?" She might have been perplexed about how Ally knew about Josh when she had first arrived but - having been here for almost a month - she was well aware of how notorious he was.
"I thought I told you," Ana's eyebrows furrowed. Well, on second thought, maybe she hadn't. "Josh is my roommate," she explained.
"Wait, if you're roommates with Josh then that also means you room with-," Ana cut her off before she could continue any further.
"Yes, I do also live with that one too." Mason was equally as notorious as Josh, maybe even more so. Anytime Ana's living situation was brought up she could almost always guarantee that Mason would be too.
"You have got to tell me what it's like," she gushed as the elevator doors opened. She grabbed onto Ana's forearm, pulling her after her as she walked into the lobby.
"I guess that's my cue," Josh suddenly chimed in.
"Sorry Josh, I promise we'll walk together next time," Ana called out to him with a sheepish grin.
"Don't worry about it," he yelled back just as the two girls exited the building.
"So, is he hot as every one says?" Ana glanced at Ally, internally cringing at the excitement on her face. "I've only ever seen him in passing so I was never able to get a good luck. Plus you've probably seen him shirtless; does he have a six-pack," she squealed.
She hated to admit it but, "He is attractive, in a rugged sort of way I guess."
"That's the best type of way!" Ana winced at the sudden shriek, taking a small step away from the loud girl beside her on instinct. "What else? All the girls say that whoever gets to hang out with him is super lucky cause he's super cool. Is that true?"
Ana couldn't believe that Ally was rambling about (gag) Mason. "As if," she scoffed. "I would never consider anyone who has to spend time with that man as lucky."
"You're kidding," Ally pouted.
"He hogs the bathroom every morning and then leaves his clothes all over the floor too. And the only thing he eats is instant noodles so it makes the dorm always smell like them. Which is just disgusting," she shuddered at just the thought. "Plus, don't even get me started on Josh and Mason always waking me up with their ridiculous arguments. I'm honestly surprised they haven't been kicked out yet," Ana concluded.
"Wow, sounds like you really hate him." Ally nodded thoughtfully with a small giggle.
Ana often thought that hate was a strong word, but in this case she thought it might've been too small of one.
"You have no idea."

When they entered the room their lecture was being held in, Ana noticed Mason talking to the professor at the front of the room with a stack of papers in hand. "Speak of the devil," she muttered.
Ally nudged her shoulder before she started waving at Mason, catching his attention and making Ana internally face palm. "Paris, random girl I don't know," he greeted after walking towards them.
"Mason this is Ally, Ally; Mason," she introduced to the both of them. "Why are you here?" Everyone living in the dorm sent their weekly schedules together in a group chat they made to make things a little bit easier. So she knew his class wasn't supposed to start for another ten minutes and it definitely was not supposed to be in this room.
"Wouldn't you like to know?" Head tilted, mischievous grin present as always.
"Actually I just want to know how and why you made it here before us. We left earlier than you, or at least I think we did." Either she had some serious issues with her memory, or Mason sprinted to get there.
"You guys spent so much time gossiping that you didn't even notice me pass you huh?"
"Or maybe you were just so insignificant that I didn't care to," she argued.
"You wound me," Mason placed a hand on his chest, replicating the exact move from earlier - only this time for the opposite reason. "Whatever helps you sleep better at night. Anyways I've gotta go fucking die in Calculus now. Wish me luck."
"I hope you have a pop quiz and fail," Ana childishly stuck her tongue out at him.
"Thanks for the vote of confidence," he winked with a smirk and she rolled her eyes as he left the room.
Ana followed Ally to their arranged seats, which happened to luckily be right next to each other. The rest of the seats were already pretty much filled as the lecture was supposed to begin at any moment now. But just as she sat down, she realized too late that something was sitting where she normally would be.
A whoopee cushion.

The Stormcrow Cycle
Once a powerful and lauded witch, Ba'an salu-Ba'an now lives alone in a cave in the desert, waiting to die. When she rescues an outlander from certain death she becomes embroiled in a deadly game of politics and empire, of heart and soul, but worst of all--of hope and love and a chance at a peaceful future. Can a disgraced witch find a reason to live her life again--and if so, what price must she pay? The Stormcrow Cycle is a trilogy comprising of The Exile, The Lion, and Abomination. Tags or genres for each book: The Exile: romance, slice-of-life The Lion: romance, slice-of-life, politics Abomination: tragedy, high/epic fantasy (aka "Everything is on fire!") Updates once a week whenever I have time. Cross-posted on Wattpad and Scribble Hub. The CBMokedi cover will return! Excerpt: She looked down at him again. Young. Healthy, from what she could see, except for the wound that was killing him. He was handsome in a way that suggested a life of wealth and plenty. She did not think he had ever starved. Someone important. Her shadow fell across him, and he frowned. Blearily, he opened his eyes. They were amber and bright, even as he lay dying in the dirt. She could feel his soul, blazing inside of him like a fire refusing to die even as his body began to fail. He met her gaze, eyes widening in what she guessed was surprise—or shock. But he never looked away, staring up at her as though transfixed. Ba’an made her decision. She raised her hand and covered his eyes. In another moment, a murder of crows cawed as they took wing. The man and woman were gone from the road, leaving only the dead staring up into the sky. Note: This is a high-fantasy set in a low-magic world. The first book is largely character-driven and we really only hit the real plot in Book II, so if you're not fond of long epic yarns you ought to skip this one. I also don't include trigger warnings, but mind the "traumatizing content" tag--all societies minus one practice slavery and the world is indeed, rather grim!
