《Kita Shinsuke》Chapter 17

I walked through the town my hood up, my head down and my eyes half shut. I passed by the shops and houses barely taking a glance at them.
I made it to the edge of town at around half 5 and just kept walking. There was a small neighbourhood to my left so I walked into it and started to walk through it.
I passed by groups of children, between ages 4 and 9, just playing around. They looked so happy and were full of energy. When I was at that age I never left the house.
The only time I left the house was for school or just out in the garden to help the boys practice volleyball. I never did any extracurriculars so I spent all my time at home.
I watched as the kids jumped around not a worry in the world. Now that I'm older I have so much to worry about, especially since the two boys in the house aren't exactly the best with money and stuff like that.
We moved out of the house with our mother at the age of 12. The new house is the one we live in now, it used to be owned by a close friend of her's but she wanted the house to go to our mother.
Our mother was diagnosed with a cerebrovascular disease a year after we moved into the new house. That's a disease that affects the blood vessels and blood supply to the brain.
She died after 2 years after being diagnosed. The one thing that I hated about being at the hospital was how quiet it was. The only noise was the distant shuffling of nurses and doctors and once she had moved rooms there was no noise.

Seeing her like always brought tears to my eyes. I sat by her side every Monday and Friday night for at least two hours just waiting for her to show any signs of life. But I never saw any.
We were barely 15 when it happened, that was the last time we saw our mother.
After that one of the doctors that was caring for our mother came into the picture. He offered to let us move into his house and live with him. We declined his offer but the police said that we needed to have someone over the age of 18 with us.
He worked with us and we agreed that he would come visit us every week in the house since it was clear we didn't want to leave. For the first while mothers money helped pay for food and school.
Since mother's friend owned the land around the house we didn't have to worry about that. The doctor, Phil, helped us learn how to cook and clean. Although Atsumu and Osamu could never make a full meal.
Of course the older we got the more changes happened. Change of rooms, fixing everything broken, more volleyball gear, school books. More and more money related things started to pop up and it was a lot to take in.
I wasn't ready to count on my brothers. I always wanted someone to help me with that. I never said stuff like 'I'm fine' because I knew that if I said that they would know something was up, so I always say 'I'm great!' Or something more cheerful.
It wasn't everything at home that was pulling me down, it was school as well. I'm not the smartest in fact I can barely get past all the tests and homework.

I spend every night studying so that one day I'll get a good job and we'll live happily. Free of worry. It was never easy to fit in with the girls at school. I was different.
Most of the girls enjoyed wearing skirts and getting boys but I hated them, getting boys isn't exactly fun for me either. I just prefer to have guys as friends, they're nicer and fun but one downside is they don't notice much.
Then I took up being the coach and probably the manager things got worse. Girls started to get pissed that I was able to be working with the boys. Maybe it was because normally girls aren't allowed to work with the boys teams.
Probably because everybody loved Atsumu and Osamu and no one really knew that I was their sister. Except the teachers I suppose. That resulted in a lot of bullying and that shit.
Since I was the coach, and a girl, there was a lot of sexism towards me. Girls can't be coaches they have to be managers, stuff like that. It never really bothered me but recently it's been getting harder to deal with.
I passed through another part of the neighbourhood and I felt a pair of hands grab me by the hips. I got twisted around and then I saw them.

The Humble Life of a Skill Trainer
For Joshua Still, Skills were the lifeblood of his business. He wanted to understand them, collect many of them, and teach a few of them. Which was a problem because while his profession of a Skill Trainer was perfectly legal, it was frowned upon by most of the kingdom. After all, it wouldn't do for a non-tailor to teach Tailoring. Or, so says the Tailors Guild. The same could be said by the Blacksmiths, the Bakers, the Butchers, the Candlestick Makers, the Mages, and every other Guild with enough money and clout to complain. But still, Skill Trainers provide a valuable service, and so he has managed to start his business and keep it under the table. To a degree. With many a bribe. But his quiet anonymous life of research, practice, and training was about to change. When the Baron demands you pay him a visit, you have little choice.

Author's Thoughts: What is litRPG (From wikipedia) - LitRPG, short for Literary Role Playing Game, is a literary genre combining the conventions of MMORPGs with science-fiction fantasy novels.[1] LitRPG is a literary genre where games or game-like challenges form an essential part of the story. A LitRPG work simultaneously narrates the story of characters inside and outside of the game-world. At least some of the characters in a LitRPG novel therefore understand that they are playing a game: they are 'meta-aware'. So, while Tolkien's Lord of the Rings is a fantasy novel, a book about people creating avatars and interacting in a Lord of the Rings MMORPG would be a LitRPG novel. Why do I read them? You know, I am not too sure. I love MMOs. I played them, quit them, joined up and repeated the cycle. They are fun! They are a massive waste of time but so are most games. Do I want to read about someone else playing them? Sort of?The advent of VR and the possibility of VR someday becoming so immersive that you can't tell them from reality sets the imagination on fire. What if this could be life? But most stories fall short. At the end of the day the protagonist hangs up his VR helmet and goes to have dinner with his mom and dad or other family and it becomes meaningless. It's like the story that ends because the main character woke up and nothing you read matters. There have been some books that explore the concept of the intersection of reality and total immersion VR. Enders Game is a classic. There were a few others that escape me but they exist, however, the cross between the game and reality is weak.So what if the game was real? The technology needed for total immersion VR is so advanced that by the time we reach that goal technology should have naturally evolved to include several items. You must have direct neural input. You simply can't have a total immersion (all senses and perfect presence) experience without this basic prerequisite. If you have direct neural access, you can probably do neat things like feed knowledge and skills directly to that person. You can undoubtedly do many horrible things as well. Muscles are controlled by the brain. If you control the brain why would you let the body just sit there and rot? A person that sits unmoving for 24 hours a day will have their body whither away just like a coma patient. However, if you control the brain you could control the muscles. On a basic level, this would be isometric impulses, working muscle group against muscle group to avoid atrophy. Taken to its logical conclusion you would be able to gain muscle mass and program muscle memory. The flip side is that you could remote control their body... but let's not go there. So what would people do if it were real? Well, they would probably limit and regulate it since the drawbacks are very obvious. Even if you look at the basic aspects of this you can see some negative possibilities. Look at the Sword Art Online anime. Personally, I think they missed the boat by putting a bomb in the VR helmet. Do you really need a bomb when you have direct access to the brain? So what kind of events would you need to have a situation where the obvious drawbacks haven't been explored? Maybe a society where the advancement of technology has so far outstripped the explorations of its applications that ignorance was truly bliss? Okay, so I had to put in an alien invasion to kickstart the premise, but that was just one of the possibilities.
