《The Country of Monsters》Chapter 21

Now I knew my hypothesis about killing the orc and taking its life energy was incorrect. At this point, with the information that I can call monsters I have never seen or killed before, what seemed most reasonable was that killing that orc allowed me to be aware of its existence. However, when I purposefully shape my magic by wishing to call monsters I have not seen before, I left the role of imagination to my magic. It guided me.
There were around 200 monsters bowing their heads as they greeted me – their Chief. I felt the need to speak:
“You can all stand up and raise your heads. Welcome to Harren. My name is Murder, the chief of the town. We welcome all of you with open arms and hearts as new citizens of Harren.”
As the monsters rose up, I was able to take a look at the different monsters. The ones that caught my attention first were around 4 meters tall and rose over the others like sturdy monuments. Their faces resembled those of evolved goblins with short fangs bursting out of their lower jaws and sharp ears. Their skin, however, was light gray, and those who had hair had black hair. Soon, I would learn that they were called trolls.
Another group of monsters looked almost identical to evolved goblins. The only differences were that their skin color was pale green, their hair colors ranged from black to blond, they did not have fangs, and their ears were much less pointy. From their stance to facial structure, I first assumed that they were even the next step of evolution for blue goblins. Later, however, I would learn that these were hobgoblins – a race sometimes born from an interaction of goblins and humans. They were apparently often shunned by both goblins and humans as a hideous race in Lostra because of this, yet none of the goblins that stood guard were moved by their emergence from the gate. I guess, it is because where they came from, no such discrimination exists.

The third group of monsters, whom I would perhaps compare to my own facial features if I had seen my own face, were around my height, had skin tones of light porcelain and beige, and had a wide range of hair color. Their ears were not pointy, nor did they have fangs. One feature they had, and I did not was the single horn they had on their foreheads. Besides that, they were probably indiscernible from humans. They were called ogres and were apparently very rare across the continent. Although they looked exactly like humans, they were considered monsters as they were first created by one of the siblings of the creator. They were known for their magic and fighting skills and were feared on battlegrounds.
The fourth group of monsters were pale-yellow skinned and had no noses. Instead, they had nostrils carefully places on the middle of their faces. Most of them had green or blue eyes and dark brown hair. Their ears were long and pointy and their bodies were lean like those of dark elves. They were around as tall as me, though on average they seemed to be around ten centimeters shorter. These were called giths.
These four groups made up the entirety of the new batch of monsters that walked in from the gate I opened. But, this only got me thinking: were there more types of monsters? Was I only able to call some of the races? Perhaps, only the ones with higher order consciousness? I was starting to feel magical exhaustion fill my veins: was it that some races required more magic power to call?
See, the annoying part about trying to understand my ow magic was that there was no one to guide me. Even the dark elves proficient in magic did not understand how I was able to redirect my magic to teach them a language or open a gate that let the monsters come in through. Most things at this point was inexplicable, yet I tried to understand the workings of my magic and this world for the sake of better adapting to it. It was an effort worth making, but it was mentally tiring.

After I ordered Gobo to help the new monsters find accommodation, I decided to rest a bit. I would soon call the monsters one by one to my room to learn their names and see if they remembered anything from wherever they came from. Since I was successful in calling monsters of different races, it would not be such a bad idea to check if their memories were intact. At the same time, I could see about their profession and talents while also learning if they can wield magic. Harren’s population was high, yet the workforce was not qualified for the most part. Even if these monsters never had their own professions in production or trade, if I could find a way to use their racial abilities, it might increase our overall efficiency.
Oh – and they might need to make new houses for the trolls due to their bodily size. Until then, I guess I will ask them to sleep in the cave goblins and initially spent the nights in, which should be big enough for them to rest.

Techno-Heretic
Eli is an ancient man sentenced to death for the crime of surpassing the sacred number of 32.8, which is the allowed percentage of increased mental ability from the use of AI chips. As he journeys through death and into a world of fantasy and magic, he finds himself approaching never before seen heights of magical power and ability. Powers that will shape the world and would see him go down in legends for generations ever after. But just because someone acquires magical abilities, that doesn't mean magic is suddenly the most important thing in their life. Some people aren't looking to be all-powerful gods, have the world bow at their feet, or spend their days obsessing over accumulating ever more power. Some people just want acceptance, stability, and the warmth of their loved ones to drive away the cold loneliness of the night. And in a world where magic is the bedrock of society, where magic is what determines who is preferred for siring children, where people with high magical ability are destined to live in great luxury and those without magic simply live to make due, this difference in values and perspective could not have a starker contrast. As Eli and the people around him navigate the misconceptions and deceptions of this world, he will represent a great and magnificent future for the human race. One where humanity will stand above the elves, dwarves, orcs, fairies, and all the horrors of the world. Sadly, men's tools are as fallible as the people who make them, and in a society where the potential of an individual is determined solely through their magical level, this seed of promise may yet turn venomous.
