《The Midnight Man》Chapter 7 - Punishment

Cindy was frozen, speechless. Her body trembled as she stood there, eyes wide. She knew she had to do something, but what could she say or do to fix this?
Thump, Thump, Thump!
Whoever was talking was now coming in Cindy's direction. Even though she desperately wanted to know who desired to kill everyone, she didn't want to risk her life by finding out. Cindy turned on her heels and sprinted back to her room silently as the footsteps grew closer. She ran inside without being seen and closed the door behind her.
"CINDY!" Keira yelled a little too loudly. Cindy was shocked when she saw that everyone else was awake. They looked worried and relieved to see her at the same time. Cindy realised she must have woken them up when she left.
"Shhhhh!" Everyone said in unison, but it was too late. They were about to find out the dark side behind the orphanage...
Suddenly, the door burst open. Cindy was shocked to see The Midnight Man standing in the doorway. Cindy's jaw dropped to the floor as her heart sank. It all made sense now; Mr Midnight is The Midnight Man's dad, the conversation, the killing and the evil side behind the orphanage. It was all him.
"What's going on in here?" The Midnight Man boomed. No one replied. "Get them!"
Suddenly, four people ran in and grabbed them. They were armed with guns, knives, pepper spray, bats and a taser! What happened here that they needed those weapons for? Cindy, May, Keira and Madison were dragged out into the hallway; They had a gun to their heads, so they didn't dare say a word.
"Now, how many of you know about my... plan?" The Midnight Man asked as he looked down at them. May, Madison, Keira and Cindy were all lined up in a single-file row, all on their knees. Four people were standing behind them, all pointing a gun at each of their heads. The Midnight Man paced back and forth as he awaited an answer.

"J-just m-me," Cindy stuttered, "I-I'm the only one that knows" The Midnight Man just looked at her, then back at the others.
"Is she telling the truth, or is she just sacrificing herself to be nice to you all?" He asked
"She's telling the truth," May said eventually. The Midnight Man smiled.
"Good," He said evilly, " I have the perfect punishment for you," The Midnight Man walked over to one of the guards and whispered something in their ear. Their face went pale as their eyes widened when The Midnight Man finished explaining something to them.
"B-but sir! That's just cruel! No human deserves to even witness something like that-"
"It either happens to you.. or him. Now do what I say!" The Midight Man barked. The guard, clearly terrified, nodded and walked to the fifth door on the right. He opened it and entered, returning a few minutes later with... Kirk.
"Now, Cindy, it's time for your punishment!" The Midnight Man laughed.

Recruit - An Infinite Labyrinth prequel
A prequel to The Infinite Labyrinth. The year is 1816. The British Empire is in full swing, under the auspices of King George III. The Infinite Labyrinth has been pouring out its product from beyond our reality and fostered a new industrial revolution. Times are changing, and the people of London are feeling the winds of the revolution while British Professionals push into the Labyrinth. The newly formed Artefact Hunting Company is looking for recruits, and they have new technology to help them. From the slums of London, they aim to recruit a new wave of Professionals. And make Zacharias and the Earl of Carnavon lots of money. So, for Rowan Rivers and a handful of lucky ones, it's time to head into the Labyrinth, and discover what makes it different from England. And what makes THEM different? Recruit is a bunch of chapters I wrote to create to the setting, mood, and game systems of the Infinite Labyrinth. It is NOT a complete story in the classic sense. It's more of a slice of life view of early days of a normal Professional from the Infinite Labyrinth, and it's heavy on info-dump. It's 90% canon - there's probably a bit of a difference between how some characters and common behaviour are portrayed here and how they'll come out in the main story. Set two years before the events that kick-start the main series, it features some of the secondary/peripheral characters of the Infinite Labyrinth and will tell you all about the basic mechanics of the Labyrinth's RPG system. It can be considered a spoiler, as the characters in the Infinite Labyrinth are going to need to figure out all that, on their own. But if you like a much deeper exposition in the mechanics, here it is. The entire prequel is about 80 pages long.

The Card Thief of Culnivar
Deep with the cozy kingdom of Daeton, among the generation-old farmlands and villages, a young farmer’s daughter stumbles upon a dead man. His elaborate clothing has been torn to ribbons, yet his skin remains unblemished. His face is peaceful, and tucked into the hand lying across his chest can be seen a solitary playing card. He is a Ludum Haeres. The last remnant of a Summoner. Numbered among those few capable of changing their destinies. The unseen rulers of the world known as Vesperia, and one of the most powerful creatures in existence. The woman knows none of this. And so, she picks up the card... This is my third novel on Royal Road, the first being "Beyond the Horizon's Eye", and the second being "The Dawnfire Archives". This story is something of a test in a new genre, that of CardLIT. We'll see how well it succeeds as the story continues. It takes place in a different setting than my other tales, with an entirely new cast of characters. It does, however, contain several ties between the stories. Average post between 1000 - 3000 words.

Parallel universes exist. Ten years ago, a terrorist organization called Liroli waged an all-out war against the World Order, bent on obtaining the means to travel between these parallel universes. Although the war ended with the government's victory, it was not without consequences. A poisonous element known as Lorine began leaking from the other worlds, bringing a plague that wiped out a third of humanity — the infamous May Death. Those infected gained strange abilities, in exchange for their certain death in a year. To counter the great plague that threatened humanity's survival, the government launched the World Restoration Project: gathering those infected and sending them into Lorine-polluted parallel worlds to seal the leaks between them. But it isn't that easy a task, as many dangers lurk behind these worlds, while those infected must deal with their own looming deaths. This is the story of Jack Waterfelt, the only human in the world immune to the May Death, and the 43rd Sealing Squad.
