《Why The Hell Not》Kate Kenner

It's been a week since I've seen my mate...in person anyway. He's been all over the news. Packs just can't get over how young he is and how it's somehow disrespectful to everyone. I personally think they feel threatened.
I've watched pretty much every news story about him, practically drooling over how sexy he is. I've only had one interaction with him and I'm already addicted.
I'll be lying if I said that some news about him doesn't have me feeling some type of way.
The hashtag 'Alpha Kai's Mate' would normally be a good thing to see if the pictures included my face.
Nope, the hashtags included pictures of my mate and the Purple headed chick from my brothers office. Countless pictures and videos of them hugging, smiling, and so very close to each other.
When you look up his name and click on images, 94% of the pictures have her in them.
What makes it worse is that I have no idea who she really is or anyway to ask him about it.
I just see this drop dead gorgeous girl next to my mate every fucking day and it kills me. She's at every meeting, every conference, everything he does she's right there like I should be.
It honestly made me feel defeated.
What if she was also in his bed? Hell I wouldn't even be surprised!
Her stupid tanned skin and dumb big brown eyes. Her horribly perfect body that was beyond fit and her horrifically angelic voice!
The thought of her being next to him made me want to punch someone in the face.
Anyway, it was about 7pm and I decided to go for a walk to clear my mind because if I spend more time thinking about it I'm going to explode.
I liked to take my walks late in the day where most people are in the house getting ready for the next day. This time the night was perfect, it wasn't noisy, hot, or dark.
I had on a Nike jumpsuit that I got in the towns where the humans lived. I loved going into their towns, they have the coolest stuff and best food.
We normally eat just a few meals because we only eat what we grow, hunt, or trade. Humans eat EVERYTHING! Including sweets! We don't have anything sweat besides maple syrup.

"Excuse me ma'am?" A strange voice called out. Judging by the pitch I could tell it was a child.
I looked to my side and met eyes with a young girl.
"Hey honey, where's your parents?" I asked, walking over to her. She seemed to be about 9 years old.
Light blond hair, green eyes, with clothes covered in mud.
"At home. I told them I wasn't ready to go in yet and they tried to force me, sooooooo I went back out to play. I tried to walk home but I think I'm lost" she said, grabbing my hand.
Luckily I was the one who found her and not some creep! This little girl was very trusting. She held my hand confidently.
"Do you know your address?" I asked, continuing to walk. Our pack's addresses are broken up into Street, Avenue, Drive, and Road, all started with a number and the our pack name, midnight. It should be pretty simple to find her house.
Kids normally don't get lost in our pack. My brother absolutely hates crimes against children. He made it a law that all children must be indoors by 8pm if they are not with their parents or a family member listed as a Guardian. He does have a list of all of the guardians of each child to make sure this rule is upheld. Families could spend 6 months jail or have to pay a good amount if their child is not accounted for at all times.
"Yes! 36 K.A.I Avenue. We finally moved into the big houses!" She said, smiling big.
My eyes widened in realization. How in the hell did she walk here?
"How...how did you get here?" I asked.
"We went for a trip to see some of the boring landmarks and just when I found something fun to do they tried to take me home" she said, shaking her head.
The closest landmark is only 4 miles away, maybe that is where they were. Did she really walk that far?
Some bigger questions are , how did she get past security? How long did it take for her parents to know that she's gone? Do they even know? Does Kai know? Is he on his way? Is SHE with him?
"Okay honey let me call our Alpha he'll contact Malakai and have you home, oaky" I said, walking towards a bench.

We sat down and she happily swung her feet, not letting go of my hand.
"Yes Zara" he said, answering on the second ring.
"I have a little girl here from Malakai's pack with me. She tried to find her way home and ended up here with me. Her parents took her on a vacation" I said, as she laid her messy head on my shoulder.
"A fucking child without a guardian? Find out her parents name, I will have them pay. She could've gotten killed, or abused" he growled.
"Key part, from Malakai's pack. Her address is 36 K.A.I Avenue. You can't punish them because they don't belong to you. Could you contact Malakai and let him know she's here?" I asked, rolling my eyes. It's like he only heard what he wanted to hear.
"Call him? Shouldn't you have his number? Or at least a mind link?" He asked, making me feel like crap!
I should be able to call my mate but he never gave me his number. He just gave me an orgasm and left me for days, then had that damn girl up in his face!
"Well I can't okay!? So can you contact him?" I snapped.
"Sure, bring her to my house," he said, hanging up.
I sighed loudly. If I felt like doing that I wouldn't have called him.
"Okay honey, we gotta walk a little bit" I said, standing up. She quickly held on to me tightly and nodded her head. She's such a sweet girl!
The walk only took 8 minutes, but that's 8 minutes I did not want to use. The whole walk she was telling me about her whole life. I know what school she goes to, her parents name, and what her room looks like.
I knocked on the door and waited about 30 seconds for him to open the door.
He didn't even glance at me, giving the child his full attention.
"Are you okay?" He asked her.
She gripped onto me tighter and moved behind my leg. Zion took the hint and stepped back. He started to walk up to his office and we followed him. The child was so pressed up on me she might as well be in my jumpsuit!
"He's a good person" I whispered to her as we walked in his office.
He sat down on his desk and pulled out a small book, which I'm guessing he kept everyone numbers in. After turning through a few pages he pulled out his phone and started dialing.
"Here take down his number for yourself" he laughed, showing me the book. I didn't even look at it, I want him to be the one to give it to me, not anyone else.
He placed the phone on the desk and put it on speaker.
"Alpha Malakai's phone, how can he help you?" a familiar voice said. I tried my hardest not to break the chair I was sitting in. Why was she everywhere?!
"Hello this is Alpha Zion. I need to speak to Malakai about a member of his pack" he said, crossing his arms.
A few seconds later a sweet manly voice sounded over the phone.
"This is Alpha Malakai, I heard that you needed to speak to me about a member of my pack?"
"Yes, she's a young girl, maybe 10 years of age. From what I was told she went with her parents on a trip and got lost. Luckily she found my sister, who brought her to me" he said, looking over at the child.
"Kate Kenner, yes her parents reported her missing a while ago. Soon as we were notified we headed to the place she was last seen. I was just getting ready to call you to see if she somehow got in your borders. Can you let your guards know we are coming in to take her?" He said.
Okay so just ignoring that I'm here? I know it's a bigger picture but knowing she's with him and didn't acknowledge me is killing me!
"Of course. How close are you so they can be ready?" My brother asked.
"Honestly we can get to your borders in 5 minutes. Thank you for keeping her safe, and tell your beautiful sister thank you as well" he said, making my heart thump.
"Oh she can hear you, we'll see you soon" my brother said, hanging up.

On the Road to Elspar (Book 1)
The year is 1329. The Huntress' War has entered its tenth year, inflaming competing nationalisms and pitting the Confederacy of Caldrein against one of the continent's superpowers, the Tenereian Union. Desperately outnumbered, the Confederacy has relied on the prowess of its famed Caldran mercenaries, with highly-trained and experienced warbands returning from foreign conflicts to the defense of their homeland, and it is on their backs that Caldrein has successfully mounted a valiant defense for a decade. But they are losing, and day by day, with all the grace of a sledgehammer, the vast Tenereian armies take one more bit of Caldran territory, one footstep at a time. Sixteen-year-old Neianne from the village of Caelon has submitted herself to Faulkren Academy, one of the centuries-old institutions established to train the next generation of Caldrein's elite soldiers of fortune, to learn the ways of wars for three years before embarking upon the defense of her country. Her dryad family once hailed from reclusive woodland communes isolated from Caldrein's complicated mainstream society, and her upbringing leaves the shy village girl unprepared to suddenly train alongside other apprentices from backgrounds as low as the dirty slums of Caldrein's cities and as high as the halls of aristocratic power. Yet the war is eroding the norms and traditions that the Caldran people have long considered part of their national mythos, and the tensions within the confederacy that have long simmered under the surface - race, class, community, identity - are slowly but surely dividing its people, and Neianne must grow and discover who she really is, even as the war that she is steadfastly training for comes to its inexorable end... On the Road to Elspar is a fantasy quest - a work of interactive fiction wherein readers get to vote on what happens next at critical junctures - that is the first entry in a story that follows Neianne of Caelon, which first began on July 20, 2016. Originally a three-part in medias res prologue to a larger story titled On the Elsparian Road, it was eventually decided that this section - which covers Neianne's three years at Faulkren Academy - become its own independent story due to length, structural, and accessibility reasons. Despite this being a reader interactive work of fiction, due to logistical and verification concerns, voting will only be counted on its thread on the forum Sufficient Velocity, where this story originally began. As such, the content here on Royal Road serves as a story-only archive. You are, of course, entirely welcome to enjoy On the Road to Elspar as a conventional work of fiction, just as you are welcome to comment, discuss, and provide critique. But if you would like to participate in the voting, then I would be honored to welcome you on Sufficient Velocity. To facilitate accessibility and to ensure the best reading experience, this story-only version of On the Road to Elspar will be updated at a periodic pace, even though further content exists, so as to not overwhelm new readers on Royal Road. If you enjoy this story, wish to binge it, and/or want to participate in voting immediately, you may of course read all additional content via the link provided above. This paragraph will be removed once the content on Royal Road catches up with what has already been posted in its original thread. Cover artwork by DreamSyndd.

A seemingly chance encounter with an ancient machine and an assassination attempt threaten to disrupt Veil’s education at the premier mage academy of Ithalaan. The bombings and terrorist actions that follow throw the entire region into chaos and draw him inexorably deeper into a mystery involving cults, gods, and ancient mysterious races. These events threaten Veil’s carefully crafted plans, but there are few limits on his ambition. He is willing to do whatever it takes to advance his schemes to become a Magus, including pursuing the illegal discipline of soul magic. While Veil isn’t a powerful mage yet, his spell wrought guns and illicit abilities will help even the playing field. The need to face down his enemies and fulfill his ambitions will send him desperately searching from Forerunner ruins in the Great Northern Forest to ancient abyssal cities within the depths of the planet. _________________________________________________________________ The book is primarily fantasy with a steampunk background. Science fiction elements won't be introduced for quite some time. I currently update my work at a rate of one chapter per week. I'm also in the process of editing chapters 1 - 7, changing the format to make it more readable, and introducing more show and less tell. The reworked chapters will have (edited) after the title. All chapters after 8 have already been written in the new style. I have a Patreon page if you wish to donate. Also, there will be intense situations, some explicit violence, and although it is not an erotic work, one or two sex scenes.
