《Distractions (Scrutinized Tanner x reader Fanfiction)》Chapter 9

A few days had passed since the calls were made by Tanner to help luna. For the most part, everything was quiet. No messages, no calls, nothing. It worried Tanner a small amount; he thought he might never get what he needed but eventually, Micheal called.
"Hey, Tanner. Got the information you're looking for."
"Really?! thanks! I was so worried something had happened."
"Yeah, sorry about that. The servers over here went down and Adam's computers and stuff are REALLY well guarded. On the other hand, though, I can assure you he won't ever know it went missing for the time it took to print all that information"
"why's that?"
"it's-- complicated. Something I think you won't understand. Just know it had a lot to do with backdoor hacks."
"I- uh... okay."
Tanner looked down at Y/N, who was clinging onto him in an attempt to feel safe. She looked a lot more afraid, he could tell, like at any second she'd lose him if he so much as left for a bit.
"now then, I sent it over to you yesterday. Hopefully, it should be there today."
"Alright, thanks!"
"no issues."
He hung up and re-called the other person he had given a call to a few days ago. He wanted to know if Luna was at least alive and Y/N's fears hadn't come true.
'Whaaaat?" the voice groaned at the other end.
"Hey, I was wondering how the whole, "defending Luna" thing was going?"
"Ah, that. She's fine for the most part. My team caught whatever his name is-- the bald Russian guy-- a few times. Otherwise smooth sailing."
Tanner sighed in relief, she was safe and thank lord too because he'd be fucked if she wasn't.
"Thanks, I don't think I'll need you any longer. I got the rest." Tanner said, petting Y/N's head.
"Alright, well if you ever need anything -- just ask... someone else."
The guy hung up and made Tanner roll his eyes. He was always that angry all the time. The guy hated Tanner almost as much as Adam did. But, knowing Adam, he knew it could only ever be, "almost as much" because Adam practically despised him.
Tanner stretched and slumped back in his couch, his hand firmly on Y/N's back. "Don't worry, Y/N, we'll be helping Luna in no time." he purred, she just lazily grunted in response making him laugh and pet her hair. Even when she was asleep she always managed to get an attitude.
For about 14 minutes, it was like this. Tanner unmoving so he didn't wake Y/N and his hand in her hair. It didn't last very long, but it was only because Tanner wanted to check his mail.

With a small amount of haste and ease, Tanner gently pushed the sleep infected Y/N over and off of him. After checking she hadn't woken up from that, he kissed her on the cheek and threw the blanket on her before leaving.
Tanner strode out of his apartment and into the hallway, not taking long to make it to the mailroom of the complex. he looked around at his apartment's small-ish lockers and soon located his apartment number, "692".
He fumbled around with the key and unlocked the small door, checking inside to see some papers and letters.
2 of them were junk mail, 1 was a letter from his grandmother (who he so fondly loved, he was a bit of a grandma's boy),
and the last one was exactly what he was looking for.
Tanner just tossed the two pieces of junk mail into the nearest trashcan and put the letter from his grandmother under his arm. A smile came onto Tanner's face as he saw the "Confidential" written in the corner of the letter.
He quickly got back into his room and set his grandma's letter down on the table, he'd read it next but for right now he needed this information. With a hasty opening of it, he read the words on the page, his eyes dashing around the words and making sure that everything was in the ordinary.
"Mr. Grayton,
Your information has been found and hacked successfully by my group. You can find it just by asking the front desk if you live in an apartment -- or if you live in a house, it should be in the package that was with this letter.
If you cannot find it, then please call us again and we'll initiate a search party for your said missing information. We take great pride in our work and would hate to have what we worked so hard to get stolen.
Thank you for your time,
-Micheal."
Tanner let out an annoyed sigh, he forgot about the whole "find it at your apartment's main desk" thing. He let out a deep growl and put his shoes back on, he was annoyed but it could've been a lot worse.
He sighed and stormed out of his apartment again and then retrieved the slightly banged up package. At this point, he thought maybe paying Micheal to E-mail him the information would be more worth it than this.
When he got back up to his apartment he slowly closed the door so Y/N wouldn't awaken. His somewhat rough hands fumbled with the old lock that he was sure barely worked and set the package down on the table.
Upon opening it, he was greeted with a small file. It had a weird symbol in the corner, but he promptly ignored it as he was more into the contents of the file.

He opened it and was immediately overwhelmed by the information of the file; Words crowding the paper until it was practically turning into word soup, a few foggy images, and various marks that were highlighting some of the most important information.
The top simply read, "Blueblood Killer" along with a few other things, but Tanner was too overwhelmed to really care about that. He shut the file and meticulously readjusted the paperclip keeping the papers together.
yep, that was what he was looking for.
He was thrilled, he finally had all he needed to help Luna and please Y/N and boy was it causing an adrenaline rush. Ignoring the newly made boner, he just picked up the letter from his grandma and smiled.
Tanner's grandmother was one of the most important people in his life. Being one of the only people who genuinely cared about him, even as a baby, he had grown up making her the only person he was open about his feelings to. So much so he'd often visit her just so he could talk to her and spend time with her.
Of course, she didn't mind she loved her grandson to near death. She'd bake him things the second she heard he was coming over to visit her, all because according to her "he looks cute with his cheeks filled with food."
He was never open about who he actually was, and because of her poor vision, she never knew he was a murderer and never knew about his B.O.L.O. But, he will say he does get a bit aggressive with people who insult his grandmother. One time he had to be restrained by her simply BECAUSE of something like that.
Tanner snapped out of it and shook off the pleasant memories of his grandma. Now wasn't the time for lollygagging. He opened the letter and read it with a smile on his face, his eyes narrowing.
"My baby boy Tanner,
How have you been, sweetie? I miss you coming over, but I understand your busy which is why I also don't plan on keeping this letter long.
I've been knitting a lot more lately. In fact, I'm making something for you like I used to do when you were 9. Now that I think about it, do you still have those old things? I remember you mentioning them but I wasn't sure if you still had them.
Other than that, I've been thinking of getting better eyeglasses. The tv is getting harder to see and it's pretty annoying. By the way, I've heard of this thing on tv called a Bowllow? apparently it has something to do with criminals but I think it sounds like a cooking show.
I love you! Grandma"
Tanner nearly cried, she's such a sweet old lady, really.
He reread it a few times, not noticing Y/N had since woken up from her very long nap.
"Awww, is someone a grandma's boy?"
Tanner jolted and turned to see her standing behind him, she had read the whole letter and was smugly staring at him. His face turned beat red as she titled her head, waiting for a response.
"s-shut up..." he mumbled looking away embarrassed, even though he knew she was right -- he wasn't going to admit it.
"Awww, I think someone isss...~" she teased, poking his nose which only made him blush more.
Tanner sighed and folded the paper back up, putting it back in the letter and setting it with the other letters he had from his grandmother. The letters were right next to an old stuffed animal she had made him when he was 10, a few pictures of him and her lined the shelves as well. It didn't take long for Y/N to notice it.
"oh? what's all that? a little shrine for your grandma?" she teased, peering from behind him. Tanner didn't respond.
"I'll take that as a yes... Hey, by the way, if I'm allowed to ask, what's the stuffed animal about? n-not to rub off as rude or anything."
Tanner sighed, "he's a stuffed animal she made... I was 10 when I got it."
"I see... does he have a name."
At first, she couldn't hear anything, but then Tanner mumbled something as his face became redder.
"what was that?" she asked softly
"M-Mr. stuffles..."
Y/N stayed silent as Tanner looked at the ground, his face becoming as red as a strawberry and his fists clenched.
"Awwww, don't get embarrassed it's a cute name!"
"Don't patronize me... T-This isn't the point, anyway!" he huffed, trying to hide his face.
"On the actual topic, I got what we need to help Luna." he mumbled, "It's on the desk, the little box."
Y/N looked over and opened it, her eyes widening when she saw the file, "is this?-"
"Mmhm~ the file containing all the information your little bleeding heart could desire about the Blueblood killer," he said fairly more confident.
"Now all we need to do is get Luna and give her all of it!"
Y/N nodded and hugged him, "Thank you, Tanner! this means a lot... my baby~"
Tanner's face immediately turned red again, unprepared for the sudden name and embrace.
at least this was finally going somewhere...
A/N
