《Protected by BTS》Chapter 24: Hoseok

"Hoseok!" You felt a few tears fall and they landed on Hoseok's cheeks. His breathing was steady and shallow as he watched you cry and press your forehead with his. In the distance, he could hear Yoongi on the phone with who he assumed to be Dr. Choi.
You finally opened your eyes again and saw Hoseok's drooping closed. "No!No! No! Stay awake, oppa! Yah! Stay awake!" You held onto his cheeks and cried harder. You couldn't bear to watch someone die in front of you again.
Hoseok understood and forced his eyelids opened. "I'm... awake. I'm," he took a second to breathe, "alright. I'm not falling asleep, calm down, Misun-ah."
You unconsciously smiled at his reassurance. "Okay, just stay awake for me, okay? We're a little far from Dr. Choi but we'll get you there. You're going to be alright, right?"
He took it upon himself to reassure you. You may be new to this but he and the boys were used to dangerous situations like this. Maybe they weren't used to fatal situations such as this one, but they have been in life threatening ones which resulted in serious injury. Number one rule to staying alive, is to stay calm.
"Misun-ah, you have to stay calm." He gulped audibly and squeezed your hand. "Staying calm, keeps us all- keeps us all alive."
You nodded. "Yes, you're right. I'm sorry oppa. I'll be calm, we'll be alright."
He hummed a 'yes.' "You know what I always think about to stay calm? I learned it a long time ago from Jimin-ah." You brushed a few tears away, glad that he's awake and still speaking. "What, Hoseok-ah?"
"Well I think about all the good memories." He paused to smile, "I think about how the bad memories turn into good memories."

He tried to move positions but winced immediately with a harsh gasp. "Don't move! We'll be there soon." You scolded, "But what do you mean?"
Hoseok looked at Yoongi who was too focused on driving; however Yoongi was still listening to your guys' conversation. "I mean, no matter how bad things get, everything happens for a reason. A bad situation can turn into a good situation. And that's what I like to think about.
It may be hard to understand at first. But you see, for example, me. I was abandoned as a child. My mother left me in an amusement park. She closed my eyes and left a chocolate bar in my hand. I counted to 10 until I realized she was gone.
I had developed many issues because of it. Abandonment issues, easy stressors that triggered my past, I had even developed Munchausen Syndrome. As if that situation wasn't bad enough, I was admitted to a hospital and had no means of leaving. No family, no friends, no means of living.
That's what I mean by a bad situation. It seemed hopeless and pitiful. I even tried to throw myself down the hospital stairs. But that's where I met Jimin-ah. He saved me from falling. Jimin was another patient in the hospital and had his own problems. But like me, he had no one, no one who truly cared about him.
We became each other's only friends. He helped me get the courage to leave since he couldn't. Jimin was stuck in the hospital but I visited him when I could. I tried to make a living off of street racing, a passion I had when I was young. It was the only thing that got me through all the foster homes I was put in.
I got good, as you can tell from tonight," He stopped to chuckle softly and brag to you. But his soft chuckles pained his own chest as he gasped for air. "Okay, no laughing I guess."

You shook your head, "No. But keep talking, you're doing great."
"Oh yeah. Anyways, I met the boys and somehow we just got close. Namjoon wanted me to race for him. It took a little bit of time but it happened. He provided me with better cars to drive and the tools in order to pimp them out. Because of him, I earned a bigger reputation for my racing and earned more money to make ends meet. That is, until I fully joined the gang and moved in. I eventually met the other members and slowly we became friends. We eventually broke Jimin out of the hospital of course. Like you, I ran away. I didn't want to be part of them because I never asked for their help in my life. Looking back on it now, I guess I just wasn't used to being in a family so it was hard to accept people. I ran away for a few days but Jungkook found me, that dumb maknae.
So you see, I have had years of bad situations and pitiful events. But it has all led to this."
You retorted, "It has all led to you bleeding out in the back of your own car?"
Yoongi slapped your knee from the front of the car. "Yah! You know that's not the point of the story," he scolded you without taking his eyes off the road and still doing 100 miles an hour.
Hoseok laughed at the interaction but hissed as it strained his body even more. "I know I'll be fine. I have you guys. Don't worry Misun-ah. I'll live. It hurts but I'll deal with it, I'm a man. I'm just glad you and hyung aren't hurt."
You brushed the hair off, letting your hand fall and brush his cheeks. "Oppa, I didn't know you had gone through so much. I'm sure it must have been hard." You reverted to a sad expression and fought the tears away. If Hoseok could go through all that, you surely could stop being a crybaby.
"Why did you tell me all of that?" You asked softly.
He smiled, despite all the pain he was in, and shut his eyes, "You're one of us now. You deserved to know."
