《Actions Speak Louder Than Fortune Cookies》40 - Escape

Sebastian had an overnight shoot, so Rylee wasn't terribly disappointed that it was already Friday and she had to work. Sebastian grabbed what he needed from his apartment and threw it into his car and took Rylee to her house so she could change.
She decided to change it up and put on a miniskirt today instead of her jean shorts, tucking in her Ruby's tank top. Her wavy curls laid gently over her shoulders as she finished getting ready.
When she was done, she came out to see Sebastian laid out on her couch, scrolling through his phone. He tilted his head up to look at her, basically upside down, "Mmm. You're lookin like a snack."
Rylee laughed and threw a pillow at him as he sat up, "What?" He laughed, "isn't that what the youths are saying nowadays?"
"If I say no, will you never say that again?" Rylee laughed as he pulled her in for a kiss.

Sebastian dropped Rylee off at work and drove off to go to work himself.
When Rylee walked in she was greeted by Alexa with a giant hug. "Hey! Oh my god, are you okay?" She said pulling back and keeping her hands gently on Rylee's arm, seeing the large bandage. Rylee's day was so busy she had completely forgotten that she hadn't talked to Alexa today.
"Oh, yeah...the last 24 hours has been a bit crazy." She rehashed last night to her, Alexa's eyes widened in shock and surprise.
"How's Sebastian been? Is he okay?"
"Yeah, he's doing okay. He feels bad about me getting hurt. He feels like it's his fault since he was reaching for me and that's when I fell."
Alexa nodded, understanding Sebastian's perspective. "Well. I'm glad you're okay. And this is why we need to not go more than 12 hours without talking." She laughed lightly.
"Oh, but Alexa there's more." She then continued explaining their meeting with Jane and how there was officially an EPO in place.
"Thank God." Alexa sighed in relief, walking to the back room with Rylee to put their things down and start their night.

😍
Hope your nights been going well.
Mines been dragging.
Miss you.
Rylee smiled as she checked her phone leaving Ruby's for the evening with the rest of the crew in tow.
❤️
Not too shabby. Miss you too 🥰
See you soon! ❤️
Rylee hopped on her usual subway train home, scrolling through her usual sites to pass the time.
She got home at her usual time and went through her usual routines, though she was surprised she wasn't tired. Normally Friday and Saturday shifts wore her out.
She went to the bathroom, and climbed in the shower, letting the steam clear her head and help her relax. After she was done and dried off, she towel dried her hair quickly, leaving the bathroom and leaving what was left wet to air dry.
She padded over to her bedroom to change into her pajamas and tried to decide what to do with the rest of her night until Sebastian got out at 7:00 am. She checked her phone to see it was only a little after 5:00 am now so she had some time to kill.
In the midst of her thoughts, she heard a thump from across her apartment and a muffled yell. Rylee froze in her spot. Another louder thud. And another after that. Her heart started racing and then she heard it. That voice she never wanted to hear, bellowing through the front door. Michael.

"Rylee!"
Rylee was in the middle of fight, flight, or freeze and her brain couldn't decide which to do.
"Where the fuck are you?! I wanna talk!" She heard from the living room along with what sounded like her coffee table flipping into her tv stand.
Her next instinct took over and she immediately dove into her closet, tucking herself closely between the wall and the clothes now in front of her, hiding her from view.
"Rylee! You think an EPO fucking matters? Get the fuck out here!"
She quickly took out her phone, silencing and dimming it. She went into her texts and sent the text she had hoped she'd never have to send as she heard Michael stomping through her apartment, screaming her name mixed with obscenities.

Rylee quickly dialed 911 and could have wept when they answered on the first ring.
"911 - what is the address of your emergency?"
"1170 23rd Street, M-Manhattan" Rylee whispered.
"Do you need police, fire, or medical?"
"Police..."
"And what is your name?"
"Rylee S-Summers."
"Okay. What is your emergency?"
"My ex-boyfriend just broke into my apartment. I-I have an EPO against him and have had a PFA in the past. I'm afraid he's going to..." She whispered trying not to cry.
"What's his name?"
"M-Michael Wright."
"Okay. Does he have any weapons?"
"I-I i don't know. I heard him break down my front door and I went to hi- oh god. He's here."
Rylee put her hand over her phone, thankful that the responder stopped talking, she listened outside for Michael's footsteps, she was surprised to hear him sound so close. The closet became flooded with light from the bedroom as he ripped open the closet door, combing the area quickly but he immediately shut it when he didn't see her in plain view.
Rylee heard him stomp back down the hall, knocking things over as he went, yelling her name.
It took all she could not to sob into the phone, silent tears streaming down her face, "I'm afraid he's going to kill me. Please help me." She whispered in a panic.
"I have officers on the way to you, but I need you to stay on the line with me okay? Are you hurt?"
"No."
"What does he look like?"
"He's 6 foot. Muscular build. 250 pounds. Light brown hair. Short beard..."
"Could he be under the influence of alcohol or drugs?"
"I'm not sure. Possibly."
"Are there any other people present?"
"No, but my boyfriend may come home soon from work." She panicked even more. She prayed Sebastian wouldn't come barreling in.
"Do you think you can safely get out of your apartment?"
"I'm not sure... I have a fire escape in this room. But I'm afraid to move."
"If you have the ability, try to get to the fire escape, but if you feel you are safer not moving then stay put."
Rylee thought for a moment and decided it was worth a shot. He had already checked her bedroom, he probably wouldn't come back right away.
She decided to take the chance. It was either be found, or at least die trying to get out.
She slowly stood up and pushed the clothes she was behind out of the way. She gently opened the door and listened for any movement. She heard glass smashing in the kitchen, on the complete other side of her apartment.
She tiptoed out, shutting the closet door behind her and made her way to the window, sliding it open slowly. She was praising her past self for using this window often so it didn't make any noise when she pushed it open. She stepped out of it and onto the fire escape, shutting the window quietly behind her.

She leaned against the cool brick wall, taking a deep breath, filling her lungs with the cool, dewey morning air.
"Rylee? Are you there?" Rylee heard the dispatcher say quietly through her phone speaker in her hand.
"Yes. I'm outside."
"Good." Rylee could've swore she heard the responder sigh in relief, "I'll let officers know you are outside and to have someone meet you there."
Rylee started climbing down the black, rusty fire escape one rung at a time, trying to be as quiet as possible and not stir any attention her way.
She made it down to the last landing of the fire escape and had to push down the last rung of the ladder to the ground. It took a lot of effort and all of her body weight but she managed to get it to slam down, causing a loud crash as it careened towards the ground and stopped a few feet shy from the alley below.
She heard glass break above her, "Rylee! You bitch!" Michael yelled, filled with anger and rage that she somehow snuck away.
"Get the fuck back here!" Rylee heard him yell from above her.
She jumped off the bottom of the ladder, landing awkwardly on her bare feet, but adrenaline carried her as she heard a gun shot and a bullet ricochet off the metal fire escape.
She limped around the front of the building and yelped when she ran into someone, a police officer.
"Please! Please, help! He's in my apartment! He tried to shoot me!" She started to crumple into him, bursting into tears.
"Don't worry miss, I've got you. It'll be okay. We've got guys upstairs right now."
As Rylee clung to the officer, who lowered her to sit down on the curb, she heard someone yell into his walkie talkie that they had detained the suspect, causing Rylee to weep in relief.
As the two sat together, waiting for an ambulance to arrive, they heard tires skid to a halt on the street in front of them.
The next thing Rylee knew, Sebastian was there, still dressed in a very Bucky Barnes-esque outfit, a dark blue leather jacket, black pants and black gloves. He pushed through the small crowd that had formed, trying to explain to another policeman roping off the area that Rylee was his girlfriend and he needed to find her.
She heard his voice and immediately stood up, and closed the gap between them, limping over. "Sebastian!" Rylee yelled.
The policeman let Sebastian through and he pulled her into a tight embrace, one hand on the back of her head in her hair, the other along her back.
"Fuck Rylee. I left the set as soon as you texted me. Are you okay? Did he hurt you? What happened?" He put his gloved hands on either side of her face for a moment, and then embraced her again.
Sebastian's mind was racing at hyper speed and couldn't stick to one single question.
"I'm okay. I heard him pounding on the door and I hid in the bedroom closet. Then I took the chance and went down the fire escape." She took in a stuttering breath, "H-he tried to shoot at me...but he missed." She was still running on straight adrenaline, the only thing carrying her through this conversation without collapsing.
"Oh my god baby. I'm so sorry I wasn't here." Sebastian was on the verge of his own breakdown about it but forced himself to keep it together for Rylee.
"I wouldn't have wanted you to be. He probably would have tried to kill you."
He pulled her back out from his body for a moment to check her over again, surprised she was basically unscathed through the ordeal. He gave her a long kiss on the forehead before wrapping her back in his arms.
As they were talking, the ambulance pulled up, lights flashing brightly, bouncing between the buildings in the early Saturday morning light. He was going to walk her over to the ambulance when he noticed she had a hobble to her step.
"Are you okay?" Sebastian asked, stopping her.
"Yeah, I think I just tweaked my ankle jumping off the fire escape."
As she finished her sentence, without saying a word, Sebastian scooped her up into his arms and walked her to the back of the ambulance, where he gently set her down on the gurney, the EMS staff diving into what they needed to do.
He sat there with her, holding her hand tightly. Rylee was surprisingly calm at the moment mostly from shock. As they sat in the back of the ambulance, they heard Michael yelling as they brought him through the lobby doors. Rylee flinched out of habit at his voice, making Sebastian's heart ache more than it already did.
They watched as Michael was hauled to the police car, cursing and yelling Rylee's name. Rylee squeezed Sebastian's hand tightly and he squeezed back, trying to reassure and comfort her.
Two of the policeman that put him in the back of the police car stopped to speak to each other for a moment and then walked up to Rylee and Sebastian. "Are you able to talk with us to file a report? Or do you need some time?"
"I-I can talk now..." Rylee said as the officers took out their voice recorders and pen and paper. As she spoke, one EMS worker put ice on Rylee's bruised and sprained ankle, encircling it in a bandage, while the other wrapped her in a blanket.
The police officers took their time asking Rylee a large array of questions. About Michael, about herself, about their past relationship and court orders, about Sebastian, and questions that covered every moment of the last half hour.
After she was done talking, one of the police officers mentioned that when they detained Michael, he smelled heavily of alcohol. He also had multiple large zip ties as well as a pistol with him, proving that he had obvious intent to cause harm.
Rylee got goosebumps at the thought. She obviously knew he had a gun, since he had shot at her, but she didn't know about the zip ties. What could have been running through his head tonight. What was his end goal...
The officers gave Rylee their business cards and said they would be in touch again. She nodded as they walked off to the patrol car. At the same time the EMS staff signed off that she was good to go and that she should RICE her ankle and it should be just fine in a few days. They were happy that that was all the further her injuries got today.
Sebastian hopped out of the truck and quickly jogged back to his car. He pulled it up and parked it beside the ambulance. As the EMS staff helped her off the back of the truck, he passed her off to Sebastian who helped her get into the passenger seat of his car. He thanked both EMS workers immensely for taking care of her and walked around to the drivers side, getting in.
Sebastian's hand immediately went to clasp Rylee's in her lap and he slowly drove around the small crowd that still remained, everyone tried to catch a glimpse into the car to see who had been involved and what was going on.
Their ride to Sebastian's apartment was ultimately silent. Sebastian wanted to ask her about what happened, though he was there when she told the police, but he didn't want to pressure her into talking about it right now. He wanted her to be able to rest and relax in anyway she could, even if it was just a silent car ride.
Soon enough, they arrived at his apartment and he parked right out front. Shawn the doorman saw him pull up and began walking to the door to open it for him. Sebastian came around to Rylee's side and helped her stand up, but he ultimately decided to scoop her up into a bridal carry again and walked her inside. She strung her arms around his neck, appreciating him carrying her, though any other time she would probably be embarrassed.
"Morning Mr. Stan, Miss Summers." Shawn wanted to ask if everything was okay but decided against it when he saw how worse for wear Rylee looked.
"Morning Shawn," Sebastian tried to smile, but struggled.
The two made it up the elevator and into Sebastian's apartment where he carried her straight to the bedroom, and laid her down on her side of the bed, crawling in right beside her.
They laid facing each other, staring into each others eyes, no words spoken between the two. Sebastian laid a long gentle kiss on Rylee's lips. A lone tear trailed out of her eye onto the pillow, as she shut them, giving into her exhaustion, wrapped in Sebastian's safe embrace.
