Balloon's POV:
I was in the middle of a large field. It was empty. No flowers, no trees, just miles of grass. The sky was blue and there were a couple small clouds floating by.
It was calming. I sat in the grass and ran my hand through it. It was bright green and beautiful.
I stood up and began walking through the large field, looking for anyone else that might be there.
I walked for what seemed like hours, but still no sign of anyone. Soon enough that familiar feeling of loneliness came over me.
I hated being alone.
I began to call out, hoping to get a response.
Nothing.
I sat down and curled into a ball. Suddenly I heard a female voice call my name. I looked up in the direction it came from.
Suitcase.
She was standing there smiling at me.
I stood up and ran to give her a hug and tell her how much I missed her, but by the time I reached her, she was gone.
I began to slowly sink into the ground. I panicked, and tried to pull myself up, but nothing happened. I shut my eyes tight.
When I opened my eyes, I was in a dark room. No doors, no windows, just a small dim light on the ceiling. The walls were concrete.
I stood up and looked around when the walls suddenly began to close in. I jumped at the sudden movement and I began to panic as the walls came in closer and closer.
I sunk to the floor and covered my head. I began to cry.
"AH-!"
I suddenly screamed and woke up. It was just a dream.
I looked around.
Still in the box...
Everyone else was asleep and the lights were still off. I assumed it was still late.
Then I noticed that I wasn't the only one awake. One other person was awake with me.
Lightbulb.
She was still sitting there looking at the floor. I sighed and scooted over to her.
"Hey Lightbulb." I mumbled, trying not to wake everyone else up. Lightbulb didnt respond.
I sat silently for a moment.
"Listen... I get it if you don't want to talk... you probably dont see a reason to... that-... incident... must've been really hard for you to watch..." I whispered, resting my back against the back wall of the box.
"I've lost a friend too..." I said quietly.
Lightbulb lifted up her head to look at me. "Really?" She suddenly spoke.
It surprised me at first, but it made me happy to hear her talk again.

"Yeah, her name was Suitcase. I dont know if you know her or not but... she transfered schools a while ago. I mean she's not-... she-... what I mean is, she's still alive somewhere, but... I dont know if i'll ever get the chance to see her again..." I mumbled.
Lightbulb nodded a bit. "Yeah... I realize now how hard it is to lose someone so close to you..." she mumbled. "Its hard to find a reason to do anymore..."
"Yeah... it is gonna be hard at first... but... over time, things will get better." I said smiling a bit.
Lightbulb stared for a bit, but then, she gave me a small smile. It made me happy.
"I'll give you some time to recover, if you want..." I said quietly. Lightbulb nodded.
"I'm hungry." she suddenly said. She hadn't been eating lately so I can understand why. I laughed a bit.
She reached for a sandwich that was still sitting in her box. It was from the day before and it was wrapped up so it should still be good.
She unwrapped the sandwich and ate it. I guess I helped her out at bit. I helped her realized she has someone to care about her.
It might still be hard for her for a while, but... I think things are starting to get better...

[Earlier the previous day]
Test Tube's POV:
I followed MePhone. He took me to an old abandoned cabin that nobody had inhabited for years.
It freaked me out a bit that he would be taking me of all places, but I guess it makes sense when you have someone hunting you down to kill you.
We entered the cabin and surprisingly, it looked pretty tidy.
There was a small couch and it was a lot bigger than it looked on the outside. There was a small table and to the right side of the room, was another room. I assumed that was probably a bedroom. There was a small kitchen straight ahead of me. It looked dirtier than the rest of the cabin but it was still fairly clean.
"MePad! I've got someone to help us!" MePhone called out.
Then a tall person peeked out from around the corner of the room that I assumed was a bedroom.
I guess that's MePad?
He walked out and stood in front of us both. He was larger than MePhone and had a purple screen with a light blue mouth that looked kind of like a shockwave.
"Hello! Pleased to meet you! My name is MePad, though I assume you already knew that." MePad greeted. He seems pretty nice.

I waved awkwardly. "Nice to meet you too, I'm Test Tube." I replied.
"I guess she knows about Cobs' whole kidnapping thing, so I figured she could help us." MePhone said. I nodded.
"He took my friends and I've been looking for a way to get them back, but I've run into a couple obstacles along the way..." I mumbled.
MePad looked at the crack on the side of my head. "What happened there?" He asked.
"She was attacked by MePhoneX." MePhone said before I could even open my mouth to speak.
Umm...Ok then...
MePad gave a worried look. "Well you're lucky you escaped! That could've ended badly." MePad said. "Let's get that taken care of."
I sat on the couch and MePad went into the room to the right, which I confirmed was a bedroom due to the fact that I could see it from the couch, and teleported back with some bandages, startling me.
I didn't know he could teleport!
I didn't expect him to appear so suddenly, and I guess he noticed me jump because he apologized.
Eventually MePhone and MePad finished bandaging up my head.
"Wait if you can teleport, couldn't you just teleport to where everyone else is?" I asked.
MePad began to speak. "I would... but it would be too risky. We are outnumbered there, and you already noticed how powerful MePhoneX is correct?" I nodded.
"Well, imagine that, but with multiple other MePhone's added on to it. That place is highly guarded. MePhone and I are some of the older models, meaning we aren't as powerful as the others." MePad said.
"Well, I wouldn't say that weaker than those idiots, but they could probably take me out if I wasn't careful." MePhone mumbled under his breath.
Well at least I have more people to help out.
I stood up just a bit too quick and triggered a bit of vertigo. I put my hand on the arm of the couch to maintain my balance.
"Ok, then what are we gonna do?" I ask, still recovering from the vertigo.
"We aren't quiet sure yet." MePad responded. I gave a dissapointed look.
"Well, then let's get to planning." I said.
MePhone and MePad looked at eachother and nodded.
"Alright then." MePad said. "Let's do this!"

Paintbrush's POV:
I suddenly woke up. My neck felt sore.
Huh?
I looked around and noticed I was in a dimly lit room.
How am I not dead?
I looked at my hands and pinched myself to make sure this was real.
I am alive. But how?
I began to sit up, but I felt too dizzy. I felt something cold on my ankle. I shook my leg to try and get whatever it was off but it didn't work. I heard rattling when I shook it.
Chains??? What is going on???
I finally managed to push myself up against the wall and look around.
There was a shackle around my ankle and it was attached to the wall. The room was empty except for one door across the room that I couldn't reach.
I recognized how the door looked. It took a while for me to understand exactly where I was. Then I remembered.
I was grabbed and then I heard a snap and everything went black. I faintly remember hearing Lightbulb crying...
I was still in that weird lab, just in a different area of it. I remembered seeing the same type of door in the room with everyone else in them.
Suddenly the doors opened and I jumped. Cobs walked in.
Seeing him filled me with rage. I tried to get up to attack him but I fell back down. I was still too weak to get up. Either way I probably wouldn't be able to reach him.
"Hello Paintbrush, long time no see!" He said with an almost cheery tone in his voice. I glared at him. "Where is Lightbulb." I snapped. He began to walk back and forth. "Currently mourning over your death." He grinned.
She doesn't know I'm alive does she...
"How am I even alive right now???" I questioned. "I recovered you. Your little friend doesn't know though, she still thinks you're dead. Kind of pathetic isn't it." Cobs said with his hands behind his back.
I hate him so much.
"You better tell her I'm alive or I'll-" I snapped before getting cut off.
"Or you'll what? Look at you, you're helpless right now." Cobs snarled. I wanted to punch him straight across the face.
"Anyway, I've got work to do. And I think I'll keep you alive, you could be useful." Cobs said before leaving the room and shutting the door.
I'm gonna kill that psychopath.
I sat there against the wall silently.
I need to find a way to get out of here...
find a way to get out of here.

But instead of safety, every step brings them closer to danger: sky pirates, cannibals, and a relentless soulless scourge unleashed by their enemy are all intent on killing Lian—or worse. Death, Aralt realizes, might be the greater mercy. ---------------------------------------------------------- What to Expect: Character-driven Plot Novel Pacing (which I accept isn't typical for serials) Elaborate Worldbuilding (you gotta pay attention) Soul-bonded Swords Sentient Wolves Longish Chapters What Not to Expect: Litrpg (sorry!) Harem (not sorry!) Magic System Short Chapters Dancing Bears (at least so far) Seriously, this is a second-world low fantasy/science-fantasy featuring a strong, but flawed male protagonist, a cheeky teenage boy that’s driving him crazy, a wee bit o’ Scots flavor, and a whole lot of culture clashing. I’m preparing to relaunch this story on Kindle once the second and third books are ready and I’d love some feedback as I move through those revisions. I'm serious about the feedback. All comments are welcome. I'll name a characters after you. And kill them, if you want. :) Oh, did I mention soulless assassins and cannibals? Yeah, Aralt’s day is not getting any better. cover image by brosedesignz
