《Picture Day (Inanimate Insanity AU)》No Point In Running
Advertisement
No POV:
Fan stared, speechless, motionless.
His eyes began to well up with tears and he broke down crying.
He collapsed to the floor, sobbing.
Nickel didn't know what to say and Balloon sat by Fan, attempting to comfort him.
Suddenly without warning, Fan jumped up and ran.
He didn't know where he was running to, just anywhere to get away from here.
"Fan-!" Balloon called as he ran away, trying to reach for him.
Fan was already out of sight.
It was silent.
"We need to go find him." Taco said suddenly. "If Cobs finds him he's done for."
Nickel, who was still really confused and anxious about the situation, nodded in agreement.
He was still fairly shocked about seeing Balloon and Fan again, and seeing Taco with them for that matter, but he was just glad that they were ok.
Nickel followed Balloon and Taco in the direction that Fan went, and Balloon jumped at every small movement in the shadows.
Balloon was paranoid to say the least, he was traumatized and worried that any second, he could be attacked and brought back to the lab where he would most likely spend the rest of his days being tortured.
They searched for hours, but still no sign of Fan.
"What are we gonna do?" Balloon asked, fearing the worst had happened.
Taco stopped, then sighed, and began walking the other direction.
"Wh- where are you going?" Nickel asked as Taco walked away.
"He's gone. We should just leave." Taco said, not looking back.
Balloon's eyes widened.
"We can't just leave him!" Balloon spoke, "we need to find him before something happens to him!"
"He isn't coming back Balloon! Just let him roam around aimlessly. Someone will find him soon enough, wether it's the police or Cobs. It's his own fault he ran away." Taco responded.
Balloon stared at her as she walked away.
He then glanced at Nickel who sighed and began following Taco.
Balloon didn't know what to think.
"So you're all just- giving up?!" Balloon snapped.
"We've looked for hours and haven't seen any sign of him Balloon." Taco said, crossing her arms.
Balloon stared as they continued walking, when he turned the other way and ran.
Nickel turned around just in time to see him run.
"Where are you going?!" Nickel called, causing Taco turn around and also see Balloon running.
"I'm going to find Fan!" Balloon called as he ran.
"Are you crazy?! You're going to get caught!" Taco yelled, trying to get Balloon to come back, but Balloon was already out of sight.
Taco sighed.
"Fine, let him get caught." She said as she continued walking.
Nickel didn't know what else to do at this point, he just stood there silently.
"Are you coming or not?" Taco snapped.
"I think I'll stay here." Nickel responded, sitting on the grass.
Taco stared at him for a bit.
"Suit yourself." Taco said, before walking away.
Once Taco was completely out of sight, Nickel stood up and ran in the direction Balloon went.
He wasn't about to let them get caught again, and he wasn't about to leave them out there alone, especially after the trauma they had been through.

All he had to do was find them.

Fan's POV:
I didn't know where I was running to, all I knew was that I wanted to get away from there
Was Test Tube really dead? I didnt want to believe it.
But what if it was true? Then what?
Theres nothing I could do about it anyway.
Eventually I ended up at the school. I dont know why I went there, but I did.
All kinds of horrible memories flooded my mind.
I glanced around and noticed something out of the corner of my eye.
Upon closer observation, I could see the dirt and rocks stained green, small shards of glass surrounding the area.
I stood there for a moment confused before realizing.
I almost threw up and I burst into tears, taking a few steps back.
"Test Tube..."
I looked away, I couldn't bear to look at the scene.
I rushed closer to the school and sat on some steps that were in front of a door, and just cried.
Why am I still going? What is the point? So many of my friends were killed because they came looking for me. If I hadn't showed up none of this would have happened.
I put my face in my hands.
"I'm sorry..." I unintentionally said out loud.
I sighed and wiped my eyes, then stood up.
I should go find Balloon. He's probably worried about me.
I began walking and ended up in an alleyway. It was dark and honestly, a bit unsettling.
Then I heard something behind me.
I froze, hoping whatever it was wouldn't see me.
It's Cobs isnt it.
I tried my best to stay calm and made up my mind to just run for it.
After a bit of standing there, I sprinted as fast as I could to get out of there.
I was just about to exit the alleyway when suddenly I was tackled from behind.
I let out a scream and at first, I though I had been caught by Cobs, but then the thing that tackled me spoke.
"Who are you and why are you here?!" The person snapped.
They had a sort of accent and sounded angry.
"I-I'm Fan I'm sorry I didn't know you were here I swear!" I studdered, shaking uncontrollably.
The person was silent for a moment before jumping off.
Their mood change was very sudden. They seemed very bubbly and bouncy.
I stood up, brushing myself off.
"Sorry about that! My name is Toilet! Nice to meet ya!" The person said, bouncing up and down with a grin, "I thought you were here to steal somethin' or hurt me!"
I rubbed my head.
"I-it's fine, I was just looking for my friend, I didn't mean to tresspass." I muttered.
"Who's your friend?" Toilet asked, still bouncing.
"Well, his name is Balloon and uh-" I was about to mention our kidnapping but then I realized.
What if Toilet is working for Cobs?
I tried to shake away the thought.
There wasn't a very high chance, but even though this city is very large, there aren't many inhabitants, meaning it is a possibility.
Now that I think about it, ANYBODY could be working for him and I wouldn't even realize it.

I stared silently and Toilet looked confused.
"Actually- I-I should probably go now, he's p-probably worrying about me." I mumbled, fiddling with my fingers before waving and beginning to walk away.
I walked for a while before I heard Toilet hopping behind me.
I turned around to see him standing behind me grinning happily.
"Why are you following me?" I asked, shuffling my feet.
"I want to help!" Toilet chimed, doing a little spin.
I didn't fully trust him, but if he isn't working for Cobs he may be able to help.
I contemplated it for a bit, before agreeing to let him help.
He looked ecstatic and hopped alongside me.
We didnt say much to eachother, but Toilet would occasionally start ranting about his living space and house, which was actually just a cardboard box in the alleyway.
"Fan!" I heard a highpitch voice call suddenly.
I turned around and saw Balloon and Nickel both running towards me.
When Balloon finally got to me, he wrapped me in a hug.
"Are you ok??? You scared me to death!" Balloon spread out his arms in exaggeration.
"I'm fine Balloon, sorry for running away." I mumbled, rubbing one of my arms, but then quickly stopped doing so, thinking it may be offensive.
Balloon didn't seem to notice though.
Balloon then turned his attention to Toilet.
"Who's that?" He asked, pointing towards Toilet with a confused look on his face.
"I'm Toilet." He said, sounding a little less excited than he did with me.
"You good?" I ask Toilet, a bit confused.
"I'm not so sure I like him." Toilet says giving Balloon a little glare.
Balloon and I stared for a moment.
"Oh come on! You dont even know me!" Balloon shouted with a dissapointed tone in his voice.
"Eh". Toilet mumbled.
Balloon sighed and frowned. "Come on Fan, let's go." He said as he waved an arm gesturing for me to follow.
"Where are we going?"
"We're going to go find help somewhere else." Balloon responded.
I glanced at Toilet then back at Balloon, and began to follow.
I heard Toilet still hopping behind.
They are going to get into a lot of fights arent they?
We all walked silently.
For a while, I completely forgot that Nickel was with us until he walked up next to Balloon and started a conversation.
"Hey wait, where's Taco?" I asked, suddenly realizing that she was gone.
"She gave up on searching for you and ran off to who-knows-where." Nickel responded.
I stood there silentlh for a bit.
"Well that sure makes me feel wanted." I mumbled sarcastically.
We continued walking and got absolutely nowhere.
I was beginning to think we were just walking in circles.
Then I noticed something familiar out of the corner of my eye.
"Crap guys- we gotta go." I said shakily before leading them off to hide.
It was the MePhone with the X again, Cobs had probably sent it to search for us here once he realized we weren't in the forest anymore.
Balloon, Nickel, and I all held our breath, while Toilet just glanced around confused.
Once the MePhone was gone, we all came out of hiding.
"What was that about?" Toilet asked.
I still didn't really want to tell him because I still wasn't entirely sure he was safe, but Balloon confessed it before I even had the chance to open my mouth.
I tensed up, worrying the worst would happen, but instead Toilet just stared in shock.
"Wait you were kidnapped!?" Toilet exclaimed.
I shushed him in case anyone else was around.
"Why didn't ya tell me in the first place?! I coulda' told the police!" Toilet hopped back and forth.
At least I know he isn't working for Cobs.
"I was just worried at first." I mumbled, holding my arms close to my body.
Toilet stared for a moment.
"Well let's go get the police and we can get you guys some help!" Toilet said before leading us off.
I doubted they would believe us, but it was worth a shot.
I'm doing this to avenge Balloon, Lightbulb, Paintbrush, and anyone else who had to suffer like this.
I'm doing this...
...to avenge Test Tube.

MePhone4's POV:
"Ugh! Curse that man!" I exclaimed, kicking the wall angrily.
It sent a wave of pain through my body.
I sat on the ground, trying my best to ignore the pain.
If only MePad wasn't corrupt, he could possible teleport us out of here.
I glanced at MePad, who was still shut off, leaning against the wall.
I've gotta get us out of here.
A bunch of different plans had gone through my mind, none of them seeming like they would work.
Except for one.
It was fairly simple really, though I wasnt sure it would work.
"Might as well give it a shot." I mumbled.
I focused and tried to generate a key or crowbar to break the door opened.
The pain of glitching overcame my body.
Being shocked so much had probably affected my circuits and inner functions.
I tried again, and managed to generate a glitchy looking crowbar.
"Good enough I guess."
Picking up the crowbar, I approached the locked metal door and shoved the end of the crowbar in-between the slit in the midde.
I kicked the crowbar first, which only made a small dent, then shoved my whole body weight onto it, causing it to open the door more.
"Hah! Finally we can-"
I was cut off suddenly when the crowbar slipped out of the gap, hitting me straight in the face and leaving a large crack.
I hissed in pain and covered the area with one of my hands.
"Dangit." I mumbled, still covering the area.
I picked up the crowbar again and tried to be more careful and after a while of struggling, I finally made a gap large enough to slip through.
"Thank goodness for being thin."
I rushed over to MePad, and picked him up, rushing over to the door and sliding him through on his side.
He flopped over when he got on the other side.
Then I exited the room as well.
I picked up MePad, being careful not to drop him.
The easy part is done, now for the hard part...
Hopefully this will go well...

Wildling
Blurb: Silas--a scavenger living off the ruins of humanity--has spent his entire life fighting tooth and nail to provide for himself and his crew. But when a scavenging run goes awry and he's snatched up by an android patrol, he finds himself thrown into a cage and priced to sell as a pet. And when a suitor comes calling, he fears the worst: that he'll be turned into a Domestic, a human lapdog brainwashed into total obedience. Instead, he discovers an equally disturbing truth: that the creatures who stole his world have created a videogame the likes of which Earth has never seen; a sprawling, game-like theme park where humans are the Avatars and androids are the players who control them. And to make matters worse, his android guide is as hopeless as they come, having gotten all of her previous Avatars killed in record time. So if Silas wants to regain his freedom, he'll not only have to fight his way through a world that was specifically designed to murder him in brutal fashion--he'll also have to convince his android guide that he should be the one calling the shots. FAQS: Q: Who are you, handsome stranger? A: I'm Kyle Kirrin, the author of Shadeslinger, book 1 of The Ripple System, published by Portal Books, and I write crunchy LitRPG. Q: What is Wildling? And is it complete? A: Wildling is a crunchy LitRPG mash up of Fantasy and Science Fiction. And yup, Wildling is already complete at 64 chapters, or about 120,000 thousand words. You're looking at something like a third draft here--it's fairly polished, but it hasn't been picked over by a copy editor yet nor has my developmental editor seen it. Q: Upload schedule? A: 5 initial chapters today (2/15/2021) and one chapter a day for the next month. After that I'll probably slow down to 2 or 3 chapters a week until the story is complete. Q: How crunchy is it? A: It's pretty crunchy. I'd put it on the same tier as Ascend/The Land/RSSG, but it might be a bit crunchier than those three? Q: Is this the first book in a series or a web novel or what? And what are your plans for it? A: It's currently a standalone with series potential. Full disclosure: this story may head the way of my publisher eventually, but will be available on RR for quite a while no matter what. Likely several months after it's complete with plenty of warning before/if it's taken down. Q: What kind of build does the MC create? A: Sword and board! Q: Crafting? A: Plenty! Crafting isn't as center stage as it is in The Way of the Shaman, but it's close. Q: Base building? A: Two fully separate, distinct bases, both of which play a major role in the story. Q: VRMMO? Portal? Reincarnation or what? A: This one's a bit tricky. Basically an advanced race has created a game-like world that closely resembles a theme park. Think Westworld but with copious amounts of loot. And the MC has to fight his way through that to earn his freedom. Q: Permadeath? A: Nope! The MC gets 3 lives to play through the entirety of the game world, and death is extremely punishing, but not fatal. Q: Harem? Or romance? A: No and no. Q: Cursing? Blood? A: Quite a bit of cursing, yeah. There's blood, too, but it's not a gory book by any means. Q: How can I support? A: Instead of a Patreon/donations etc, I'd ask that you consider giving my debut LitRPG Shadeslinger a chance. It's free on Kindle Unlimited and the audio is already out narrated by Travis Baldree. It's an epic fantasy VRMMO where the main character gets 3 days of exclusive access to a new game plus a snarky, talking axe to guide him through it in exchange for agreeing to become the target of a serverwide manhunt once the Head Start period ends. Q: How's it similar to Wildling? And how's it different? A. The crunch level is very similar, but Shadeslinger is a much lighter, epic fantasy take on the genre. It's also VRMMO, but without any real world components aside from the first chapter. The MC is very different--he comes off as a bit of a jerk early on and can take a bit to warm up to, especially before his backstory is revealed--but he's also got a talking axe that constantly puts him in his place. Shadeslinger's a much more humorous story in general, and it's a great deal more polished as well. Thanks for reading! I hope you enjoy Wildling!
