《Lilac's Lies》42

"Lilly," I heard Clara's voice whispering to me. She sounded close, like she was right in front of my face.
I didn't want to open my eyes just yet. I focused on feeling instead. I was laying down, I knew that much, wearing something I'm positive wasn't the same thing I put on this morning. There was a scratchy blanket on top of me, there was a faint beeping sound to my right. It didn't take long before I felt searing pain in my hands. I tried to move them, feeling the stiffness. They were wrapped in something, covered and I had no clue why.
I slowly opened my eyes, and my suspicions were confirmed when I saw Clara's bright blonde hair only inches away from me. She was looking down at me, tears swimming in her brown eyes. She looked worried, the skin on her face strained.
"Clara?" I croaked out, noticing my throat was dry. I tried to sit up, pushing against the bed I was in, but Clara only pushed me back down.
"Lilly, listen..." Clara started, but my mom's ringing voice cut her off.
"Lilly, sweetheart, you're up," my mom sighed in relief, and she emerged into my vision. It was then that I noticed I was in a hospital room. I felt my eyes widen as I looked down at my body, the spotted green hospital gown covering my body. My hands were indeed covered with something, both of them bandaged heavily.
"How are you feeling? How's your pain?" My mom asked me, coming to my side and placing her hands on my arms.
"I feel okay, mom, I'm just tired..."
"Jesse told us what happened," my mom rushed out, "you need to be taking better care of yourself darling."
"Jesse told you...?" I asked her, glancing towards Clara who only tilted her head at me.
"Yes, both him and Khalil were the ones who found you. Thank goodness they followed you into the bathroom," my mom continued, gently stroking my skin.
"Is he here?" I asked her, my mind swimming in confusion.
"He's here. They both are. I'll go get them," my mom let out, instantly rising to her feet and making her way towards the door.
"Wait, mom..." I tried to halt her, but she seemingly didn't even hear me as she waltzed out the door.
"Lilly, what the fuck happened?" Clara asked me, "is Jesse telling the truth? I mean, you never know with him. Oh my god, Lilly, you don't even understand how scared I was. The whole school was talking about it before I even knew what was going on. They made it sound like you were dead or something. I swear to fucking..."

"Lilly, babe," I heard Jesse's voice, causing Clara to stop talking instantly.
I looked towards the door, watching as Jesse strode into the room. Khalil followed him, then my mom, then a man in a white coat who I'm assuming was the doctor. Jesse came right to me, a disgustingly sweet look of care on his face as he grabbed my hand.
"Miss Lilac Green," the doctor said, glancing down at the clip board in his hand.
"It's Lilly," Jesse said instantly, almost cutting the doctor off.
"Right, Lilly. I'm Dr. Martin. I evaluated you when you came in. How are you feeling?"
I glanced around at all the people in my room in confusion, starting to feel overwhelmed. "I feel sore."
"Well, that's to be expected. You're receiving morphine through your IV, but I can increase the dose if you need it. Do you remember anything about what happened?"
I looked down at my hands, which were starting to hurt more and more by the second. I was beginning to feel the stitches that were underneath the bandages. Besides the pain from that, my head was throbbing. Then, I glanced at Clara, then back to Jesse. My eyes lingered on him for a moment, trying to decipher the look on his face.
"No." I said blankly, watching as Jesse seemed to look relieved.
"You hit your head pretty hard, you've suffered a grade two concussion, so brief amnesia is not alarming, but it's definitely something we need to keep an eye on," the doctor explained.
"What happened?" I asked him.
"Well, your boyfriend here is the one who called the ambulance. He said that he followed you into the bathroom because you told him you were dizzy. He watched as you fainted, hitting your head off the mirror, breaking it. You tried to push off the ground once you fell, slicing your hands on the broken glass. It's a miracle you didn't sustain any cuts to the head or the face. You were very lucky," Dr. Martin told me, as if he was reading a script.
"Oh," I said simply. I wasn't sure what else to say. I let my eyes drift to Khalil, who wasn't looking at me at all. He was staring at the ground, his arms crossed over his chest.
"You were severely dehydrated," my mom told me, her voice almost cracking. "And the doctor thinks you were sleep deprived as well, and that you haven't been eating, which caused you to faint..."

"I don't know," I told my mom, feeling guilty. That was a lie. I knew I was exhausted. I knew I wasn't drinking or eating properly. How could I be?
"What's the last thing you remember?" Jesse asked me, his voice just a step away from panic.
"The last thing I remember..." I started, trying to think. "I remember driving to school."
"And that was right before the accident?" The doctor asked, scribbling down on his clipboard.
"Yeah, maybe half an hour before." Jesse answered for me.
"Okay. Well, I think that this is just a side effect from the concussion, but we need to keep you here for evaluation," Dr. Martin told me, nodding to my mom as if they were having a silent conversation.
"I'm going to go order that morphine for you, Lilly. A nurse will come in to administer it to you shortly. Ms. Green, if I could have a few words?" He asked my mother, gesturing for them to leave my room.
My mom blew me a kiss before leaving the room with Dr. Martin, which left Clara and I alone in the room with Jesse and Khalil. It was silent at first, as we all looked around at each other. There was a tension in the room, mostly emitting from Khalil and Jesse.
"You should have seen it, Lilly. As soon I heard what was happening I ran into the hallway, and Jesse was carrying you through the halls. There was blood dripping down your arms. It was crazy. It was like a scene out of a movie. Oh my goodness, what if no one found you? What if you were laying in that bathroom for hours before anyone came in?" Clara rushed out, her words coming out in a single breath.
I would have laughed if my head didn't hurt so badly. It was something Clara did when she was emotional but didn't want to confront those emotions. She talked until someone made her shut up.
"Clara, take a breath." I told her, my words scratchy.
"Lilly, you really don't remember anything?" Khalil asked me, speaking for the first time since he entered the room.
"No," I said. "Not a single thing. It sounds pretty intense though, I mean... fainting and hitting the mirror face first and breaking it? Ouch."
"Yeah... it was scary," Khalil said, shifting his eyes back down to the ground.
"But, at least I found you babe. I saved you." Jesse told me, leaning down to press a kiss on my hand. I only stared at him, wondering what game he was playing.
"Jesse, can you get me that blanket you bought me last year? The purple one with flowers? It's at my house. I really want it." I told him, trying to keep my voice even.
"The blanket? Purple with flowers?" He repeated my words, and I could tell he had forgotten what blanket he had given me. He probably had no idea what it looked like. "Yeah, of course babe. Khalil, let's go."
Jesse leaned forward, gently pressing a kiss on my cheek. He turned to Khalil, and I only faintly saw the fire in his eyes resurge when he looked at him. They didn't speak at the looked at each other, they just walked out the door without another word.
"So," Clara started, coming to sit on the edge of my bed.
I didn't let her finish. I sat up as fast I could, which admittedly was a lot slower than usual. "Clara, listen to me."
Clara looked taken back by my actions, she opened her mouth again to talk but I only shook my head again.
"Listen to me. They are all lying to us. To me, to you, to the doctor. Jesse is lying, Brett is lying, Khalil is lying." I rushed out, trying to get the words out before anyone came back.
"Wait what? About how you fainted?" Clara asked me. "I thought you didn't remember."
"I lied." I told her instantly. "But, that's the least of our worries. Clara, they're lying about what happened that night. There's something important that we don't know. Khalil was trying to tell me, and Jesse hit him. Then, Jesse was about to tell me before I fainted. It's something really important."
"What the fuck?" Clara asked, clearly in shock.
"You need to go home, get your laptop and come back. Tonight, we're going to look into every single article ever written about that fucking boating accident, and we're going to figure out what the hell everyone is lying to us about."
"Okay," Clara stood instantly, gathering her things.
"And then, we're going to free ourselves from this never ending fucking nightmare."
