《Maeve》ChapterTwo: Plaything

The next time Maeve apprehended her surroundings she was in a dark cell. She heard water dripping next to her. Sometimes the water landed on her shoulder. At first, it didn't feel that bad, but after a while, it felt like torture.
She could also hear screams in the hallway which made her question whether it was water or something entirely different that was dripping onto her arm.
She didn't want to know what was happening here. She felt her head sting the more she thought about it.
Perhaps all of this is only a huge nightmare.
"You are not in a nightmare my dear. We are in hell." Maeve heard a raspy voice next to her. The owner of that voice was an old man. His matted and dirty grey hair was longer than she had ever seen. It touched the floor.
"Who are y-you?" The girl whispered. She had not seen him there before.
"You do not know who am I but I know who you are" the old man answered. If Maeve thought she was scared earlier, she was shaking in fear after hearing that. How could someone she has never met know about her?
"How?"
The man smiled showing his yellow teeth.
"That is a discussion for another time, Queen of Beasts."
Maeve blinked. What had he called her?
She was a human and in the light of recent events she knew that no beast would ever honor her. "W-what do you m-mean by that?" When she turned to the old man seeking answers but he was no where to be seen.

"Where is the human?" The King growled out. For one to say that he was not having the best day, would be a huge misunderstanding.
Everything one could thing had gone wrong. The stress started to devour on Dominic's heart as he walked away from the Great Hall. Fate had started to play tag with him. And it had no idea with who it was messing with.
He had heard about the human currently inhabiting his castle. It angered him more than necessary. It was his order to bring a one to pay for the sins of their ancestors.

His little plaything.
"She is in the dungeon."
A dangerous smirk covered his lips. It was a while since he had had a human in his estate. And the last meeting with one had turned bloody. The stench of blood was hard to get rid of. He of all people would know. His souls was drenched in it.
"Bring her to me." The smile deepened. He had just the plan for his human.
"Where do you want her, my King?" One of his soldiers asked.
"Bring her here."
***
"Open it." A male's voice commanded after that few soldiers came into the cell Maeve was in.
"Remove her chains."
Maeve started screaming and struggled against the man's cold hands. She had no idea what is happening, but no good would come from it. "Oh look at that. The tramp can fight back, perhaps she more useful than we thought." One of the males snickered.
Maeve opened her mouth to say something yet she decided against it. It would not bring any pleasure for her. Only more pain.
"Did cat got your tongue, puss?"
"Leave it. Let's just get this over with as soon as possible. The King has had a rough day."
"I am aware of that. Regardless it does not stop us from showing the puss her place in here." He grabbed Maeve and lifted her until his mouth was next to her ear "You are nothing. You are the weakest thing in this castle."
Maeve knew that.
All of them had made it sure that she understood it. She was only a mere human in a castle full of shapeshifters. If they decided to snap her neck in this second, she would not realize it before it was too late. She just hoped that if and when she was going to die, it would be a fast death.
"Is the little damsel crying?" A man from the hallway asked.
"Why do you think our little puss would be doing something like that" He stopped in the middle of his sentence only to grab Maeve's hair and lifted her using it. "Good little puss does not cry now does she?"

A loud roar echoed from the hallway making her harassers freeze.
The man who was holding her hair let it go making her fall onto the hard ground. A large silhouette appeared in front of the cell.
"Where is my human?"A husky voice asked.
Maeve was stunned. And frightened as she looked at the shadow of a tall man. Who in earth could be? He was the reason why all the men were looking down on the ground. None of them even breathed not wanting to disrespect him. The power he was radiating made her want to bow as well, but she did not do it
One of the men footed her at the ground. "Show some respect to your King."
King.
Maeve did not dare to look into his eyes. The portals to one's soul which would one's true personality. He was a King. The King in whose hands her life was. Now she knew why her kidnappers had insulted her but never made a move towards her. She was his toy.
"Leave." The King commanded. He didn't even raise his voice. Maeve turned to look at the ground like her life depended on it. It probably actually was.
"Look at me human."
She did not look up. She did not want to see the eyes of the beast. No matter how hard the voice in the back of her head was telling her to do so.
"I said look at me." He clearly emphasized the last words but Maeve did not obey him. She did know that this will be fatal for her. But she could not do it.
His next move surprised her. He threw a knife in her leg.
Maeve's eyes filled with tears as she screamed in pain but still she did not look away from the floor.
That damsel was getting on The King's nerves. Maeve knew it and so did the King. He didn't throw her with another knife at her but he instead lifted her petite body using her neck.
That is when their eyes met for the first time.
Maeve stared at him in awe. He was definitely handsome with his dark features. But he was also a killer. He had killed William and Kiera maybe even her mother and the rest of her siblings.
"This can not be real." She heard quiet muttering. That's when he dropped her to the ground.
Maeve cried out in pain.
"This can not be happening."
Maeve did not understand what was happening. Yes, she does think that the King was handsome but she didn't believe that he would never possess mutual attraction to her the way she was attracted to him. After all, he only thought of her as a lowly toy. Lest she was a skank of a human being.
"You should not even exist." A painful growl left his mouth.
"W-what?" Maeve's eyes widened before she sank on the ground once more. She could not stop herself. She had done the one thing she never wanted to do. She had talked to the beast. Before she could react any longer further, he was far gone.
***
Far away from the castle stood a little wooden cottage. If an outsider would walk beside it, they would not guess that under that small cottage was a large room filled with different supernatural species.
A woman with black hair opened her eyes. Her white opaque eyes glowed brightly.
"It has happened." She said.
"Are you sure? He wasn't supposed to ever find her."
"Do you really think that I would lie?"
"Of course not, my lady."
"Fate is cruel. The strongest one of us found his other half in a weak human girl."
A witch named Tara snorted. "Do you really believe that she will be able to see another sunrise because I don't."
"That's is true. She will be dead sooner or later."
"His wolf would never forgive him." A little girl said quietly. She knew that they would hear her.
"Maybe not but the King can't have a weakness. If the girl dies he will never be the same now that they have met her."
"You can't know that Sirius, he's the King after all. He even killed his family because he didn't want any weaknesses and now that he has found his mate he will kill her too."

The Epiphany Colony
Brad Asher has been a private detective on the Epiphany Colony orbiting Mars for about a year before stumbling into a conspiracy that threatens the safety and stability of the colony. Note that the story here is the first draft and has a lot of ideas, characters, and plotlines that I ended up dropping in the final version that I released here currently available on Kindle Unlimited. The entire second half was restructured, as I ended up not being satisfied with some of the things that I introduced and felt like it had strayed too far from my initial vision of a space-based detective noir story.
