《Maeve》ChapterThirteen: A Mouse Called Tommy

One lonely guard was walking towards The Great Hall. He had an important message he needed to deliver to The King. The Royal Beta informed that it's urgent and now the guard is running towards The Hall like his ass was on fire.
"What's your business in here" Another guard next to the door asked.
"Our Beta ordered me to deliver a message to The King."
"What kind of message?"
"Tell me if I'm wrong, but the message is nothing you should know. It is between our King and Beta and you are not one of them." The second guard glared at him.
"Fine, you can go in." He said and opened the door.
The King was sitting on his throne and stared at the door. He didn't like when someone disturbed his peace. The guard rushed closer to the throne and bowed.
"Why have you came here?"
"Your Beta told me to inform you that the human girl has broken in the dungeon. And is now back in her old cell. He also asked that you would go there as quickly as possible." He still stared at the floor, he didn't have the guts to look straight into The King's eyes.
"Leave."
"Y-yes sir, of course, sir." The guard said and rushed out of the room. A few minutes later The King followed his tracks and headed toward the dungeon. That girl simply couldn't stay away from trouble. While walking there every servant and guard he passed bowed and some maids even blushed.
Finally, he saw his Beta standing in the dungeon.
"You send a message." Cato turned around and smirked.
"Yes. It seems like your human is also a little thief."
Dominic's eyes widened. "A thief?"
"First she sneaked from a guard here and started to scream some weird name. Then she went in front of her old cell and started to crash things around but then suddenly she started to run away from here with something in her hands when she crashed on me. And now she is in her cell."
"And why do I have to be in here? It seems like you got everything handled."
"She is not my mate," Cato mumbled. That human girl is not on his responsibility and never will be. If she is going to on someone it would be The Kings or The Royal Gammas. And last time Cato checked he is a beta and not a babysitter.
"What did she take?"
'Oh, he is going to love it' Cato thought before opening his mouth. "A mouse."
The Kings eyes held an emotion that could be read as hate or that he was truly pissed of. "You called me to come here and it was all because of a fucking mouse?!"
"You told me to inform anything that associates with the human," Cato remembered like it was yesterday when The King walked into his room and asked... no more like commanded that Cato would be her babysitter. Or maybe The King didn't use the word 'babysitter', but that was the only thing Cato understood.

They stared at each other for a while. All the guards that used to guard the cells were now long gone.
"Where is this mouse now?"
"Well, when she walked into me. I tore her arms open and found a little mouse in her hands. Then I took him from her and tried to snap the mouse's neck. but that little bitch started to scream like a madman and jumped on me trying to take the mouse. Because I wasn't expecting her to jump on me we fall and she took the mouse and ran in her old cell."
"Him?"
"She screamed something like 'Tommy' or 'Tom' when I took the mouse." For the first time in months, Dominic smirked.
"You let a little human girl beat you?"
Cato frowned. "That was the only thing you got from that? And no she didn't win me, she just surprised me and is heavier than you would think."
Dominic rolled his eyes. "Just kill that mouse and drag her back to her chambers."
Cato paled and shook his head. "No way. I'm not going to go back there and try to take the mouse from her. That bitch acts like it's her child or something." He turned around and showed his upper back to The King. "See these? My shoulders look like some wild animal has attacked me."
The King looked at the cuts on his friends back. It's good to know that the human can fight like a wildcat if someone threats something she cares about. Sadly his beta was the test object but he deserved it.
"Kill that mouse." After that Dominic started to walk away. He couldn't believe that his Beta wasted his time because of a mouse.
"NO!!" A female scream echoes from distance. Cato grinned.
"See? That human needs to be an asylum." Dominic turned around and started to walk towards the cell that held his mate.
"What are you doing?" Cato asked. Is The King crazy or why is he walking towards the girl who has caused multiple wounds on his back.
"Doing something that you should have done a long time ago."
As Dominic walked towards the cell that Maeve was in, the human girl started to panic. She couldn't let Tommy die. He was the only family she had. Maeve didn't care that he is a mouse and couldn't speak and probably hates her for letting Cato touch him. But if someone dares to touch her friend and kill him, Maeve doesn't know what she would do. She would lose the only reason she keeps breathing and fighting against darkness.
"T-Tommy I need y-you to hide in my pocket." The human whispered. "He w-will kill you if y-you doesn't."
The mouse squeaked as if he would have understood what Maeve was talking. Tommy looked as scared as his friend is as if he would have sensed the danger.
Maeve lifted the mouse with her hands and kissed his head. "I love y-you." She mumbled and put the mouse in her pockets. It was pure luck that Cory had picked a dress for her that has pockets. That's when the cell door opens and very angry looking King is standing in front of it.

"Give me that mouse."
Maeve took a step away from the back wall, now wasn't the time to be scared. "N-no." Why did she have to stutter every time she was afraid? Why couldn't she be one of those heroines that fought for what they believed in? Why did she have to be stuttering little human girl that couldn't do anything?
"What did you say?" The King also took a step forward.
Maeve felt like her legs will soon betray her, but if she let that happen Tommy would die. And she will never let that happen. The girl looked at her legs and took one deep breath before locking her eyes with her captor. "I s-said no."
While the two mates were staring at each other, Cato walked to look at what was happening in the cell The King disappeared in. He couldn't believe that the human had finally grown a backbone.
Maeve felt mesmerized by his eyes. They were so much more beautiful than she remembered. It was such a big crime that the cruelest of us is the most beautiful too. Now she could also see a few scars running through his face. If only he wasn't so cruel, Maeve would have been heading over heels in love with him. But who can love a monster?
"I will n-not let you hurt T-Tommy."
Dominic laughed. "You really think you can stop me? If I wanted him to be dead he would already be cats food."
Maeve felt Tommy moving inside of her pocket.
"Now, give that mouse to me." He raised his voice little. And that caused a chill run down her spine.
"N-no," Maeve whispered.
And that pissed The King. Next thing Maeve knew her back was against the brick wall. The impact with the wall caused tears to form in her eyes. And those tears didn't go unnoticed by Dominic. He felt something stir inside of him but he didn't let that effect on his actions. He wouldn't become weak because that human started crying. Crying is an act of weakness and everyone who feels bad for a crying person are weak too.
"No, my little mate. I know that the mouse is in your stolen dresses pocket, thief. I'm going to give you five seconds to give Tommy to me or I'll take it by force." Their faces were so close to each other that if Maeve tiptoed their lips would have crashed.
"One."
"Two."
"Three." Maeve felt panic crowing in her chest. Is this really the way Tommy will die? Because she was too afraid to fight for his life?
"Four. Your time is getting low, mate."
"Fi..." He didn't get the chance to finish. "My King," Cato said.
"The border guards send a message. They need you there to check one thing they found."
Dominic turned to look Cato's face. He looked like he was serious. The King shed one look to his mate and then started to walk away from his Beta after him.
Maeve was in shock. Did The Royal Beta really save Tommy's life? Or was there really an emergency? Which one it really is it doesn't change the happiness she felt. Tommy is alive and hopefully will be many days from here too. But why did Cato stop it right when The King finally reached number five? It is a mystery only he can answer.
They didn't lock the door so Maeve guessed she can go back to the room she sleeps in. And what is different from the last time is that Tommy is with her.
"T-Tommy? Did you see t-that? You're safe." Maeve said, but she had forgotten that the mouse is in her pocket.
"Oh sorry." She said and took the mouse from her pocket and smiled the widest smile she had smiled since coming there.
The human walked away from her cell and headed towards the kitchen. Maybe she can get some food and cheese that they can celebrate. But there is one thing Maeve do know; that they are not safe, yet.
***
A witch ran through the woods. She knew she never ever shouldn't have gone there. Now they are after her and her family despite her because she wanted to warn him. It may sound ridiculous to warn The King of Werewolves, but she didn't want her to die.
"STOP!!" Someone yelled.
What are they thinking? That she will stop after many miles of running because they say so. Hell to the no, Cat wasn't stupid.
"Few miles." She whispered.
Soon she would reach the border and would be safe in there, hopefully. But what she didn't know, was the few assassins that were hiding behind the trees waiting for her.
***
After many minutes of pleading Maeve finally got a small slice of cheese and few slices of bread and fruits. They didn't want to feed a human, but after Cory walked inside the kitchen and whispered something to the cook's ear he finally let her take something that would have probably gone to trash.
"You could have just asked me to get some food for you."
"Oh, I just w-wanted to c-celebrate with Tommy."
Cory looked confused. "Who is Tommy?"
Maeve looked around to see if someone is close enough that they could see the mouse she was going to show her friend. She definitely didn't need someone seeing him and who knows what will happen after that.
"L-let's go somewhere p-private."
"Okay?" Cory is truly confused. She has worked in the castle for many years and never has she heard someone who's name is Tommy. And now the human says he is her friend.
"Is it short for Thomas?"
Maeve looked at her confused. "No? I named him Tommy."
After they walked to a hallway which was empty, Maeve put her hands in her pocket.
"Cory, I want y-you to meet T-Tommy." She said and opened her hands which held a mouse. Maeve did expect Cory to be little confused, but she never imagined her to run away screaming.

Interface
Welcome to the World-City of Thousel, the sixth iteration of life on the planet. These are the recordings of the people of Thousel. Thousel is believed to be the second longest iteration of life, and the overall most prosperous compared to what we know about the past five iterations. Medicine and technology have all progressed abundantly, and the world itself has been turned into one great city, governed and managed by the Governmental-Company Alliance, or the GCA.These particular recordings concern the discovery of a peculiar machine. When two very different people find themselves bound by the fate of one mysterious bot, life in the World-City begins to change… Interface is a cyberpunk webnovel set in an ecumenopolis world where people evolved with electro-sensory abilities. These senses shape the face of modern technology and life in a world where the three largest corporations run what has effectively become the government. Each of these three companies control various aspects of life in the city, and they all constantly vie for domain and power over one another. The world stands at the precipice of biological, technological, and historical breakthrough. After decades of study into microbiology, archaeology, and geology, it has been discovered that sentient life has lived on the planet multiple times over. These past peoples are referred to as the “prior iterations of life,” and it is believed that five great civilizations were constructed before the rise of the modern world. No one can be sure for certain what caused these peoples’ extinction long ago, and the theories range from simply dying off over time to massive tectonic fractures in the face of the planet. Advanced technology, far more complicated than anything the people possess today, has been uncovered in multiple locations. This has lead scholars to speculate on exactly how long each iteration of life survived and how far they progressed as a society. None of the companies have been able to find a way to make this ancient technology work for their own profit. It is as though they are each missing the final key needed to unlock these centuries old secrets. What could this knowledge reveal about the nature of life across every iteration? What power could it give to the one who wields it?Far from the investigation into the origin of life, two kids unlock a new mystery – one that ties their fates to the discovery of an old, mysterious robot. Suddenly, eyes begin to turn towards them as life in the city of Thousel changes wherever they go…
