《Chasing the nerd ✓》Chapter 26| Noah

I don't know how much time I've been here but I can feel my stomach growling. Just as I'm about to check the time my phone buzzes.
I instantly smile with her message. I haven't seen her after the party last night and I was battling with myself not to text her until later but she beat me to it.
I checked the time out of curiosity. It was 3 o'clock in the afternoon. I shook my head smiling.
As I'm gathering my stuff to take my lunch break I hear a light knock on my door.
"Come in." I say, my phone in hand waiting for her message. When I raise my sight my blood runs cold when I see Jeffry Novac on my doorstep.
"Mr. Novac good afternoon." I say mostly out of breath and put my phone down.
"Hello, mr. Cooper. Can I have a word with you?" He says with that low voice that scares the crap out of me. What is it about this guy that makes feel this way around him?
"Please." I say and point the chairs in front of my desk while I stand.
He walk towards me with very steady and slow step, really sure about himself and before he sits he unbuttons his casmir blue jacket. He motions for me to sit as well. I nod lightly and sit. I feel my phone buzzing once again but i turn it upside down and put it away. I cross my hands over my desk and wait for him to speak.
"So? How you are handling all the work? Everything ok so far?"
Ok, that's odd. I put my poker face on and try my best not to show what I'm thinking right now, because what I'm thinking is that this guy is being a bit shady.

"Doing my best. There is a lot of organising to do, a lot of things that need to be sorted out but I manage." He is nodding while I'm speaking but looks at his hands without any emotion on his face.
"That's good." He says eventually forcing a small smile on his face. I wanna scoff because it seems so fake but I keep my cool instead.
"Is something wrong?" I ask and he raises his head and locks his eyes with mine. They seems even darker than before if that's possible and although he is still smiling, it never reaches his eyes. I'm not an expert but i would say he seems furious for some reason.
"No, on the contrary I'm impressed by your qualities. You are doing a great job this far. I'm actually thinking maybe you should be moved on another department, in a managing position maybe. I can tell you have what it takes, you could thrive in a position like that." He says slowly and keeps playing with a massive ring on his finger. That's bullshit. I don't believe a word he says. Something is wrong here, i can feel it in my gut.
I keep my face neutral nevertheless.
"That's very generous of you. Thank you but I don't think I'm ready yet for something like that. I have a lot to learn and having Dan to guide me through that gives me a sense of security. Plus that's why I'm here, to help him. That's my job description, literally." I'm not saying that I wouldn't love to be in a managing position someday, but the way he is offering me that, like it's something so simple, makes me think that there is a catch.
"I can talk to Dan if that's what you like. I bet he wouldn't have a problem. He is becoming quite fond of you." He says raising his eyebrows expectantly.

"Thank you again but I'd like to stay here for the time being. If that's ok with you of course." His lips are pushed in a straight line and his eyes are piercing me but he nods.
"Ok then." He puts his hands with force on the chair's arms, his metal ring clicking with the wood making a loud noise and he stands up. "I'll leave you to your work. You think about it thought. It was nice talking to you." He says and shakes my hand before exiting my office closing the door with a loud thud.
I exhale relieved he finally left. I wonder, should mention anything to Dan? Yeah, probably not. I don't want to meddle in their business, he probably will tell him himself. I can't help but feel a little suspicious thought.
My phone buzzes again and it pulls me away from my thoughts. Damn, I forgot about Rachel. I have three unread messages. Man, she types fast!
I chuckle a little, grab my wallet and head out of my office phone in hand.
"Hey, Linda. I'm gonna go grab something to eat from the cafe down the street. I won't be long." I say smiling to Dan's secretary. She looks at me confused, probably because of the way I'm smiling, but she nods eventually.
I laugh out loud while I'm inside the elevator which is filled with people, making a few heads turn my way. I seriously can't help it.
I'm a little surprised she guessed correctly but then again she knows how things go.
I knew it! I knew it was off. Something is going on, I'm sure of it now.
I change the subject as fast as I can. I'm going to look into the Jeffry thing on my own when I get the chance.
He texted me earlier saying that he has the new bumper for my baby and I can't wait to get her fixed.
Oh, yeah. She doesn't know who I'm friends with. I like that. I know mostly everything about her while she doesn't have a clue about me.
Here we go again!
My breath is caught in my throat. And my lips are starting to tingle. God, I really want to kiss her too.
R
This girl will be the death of me. I can feel my walls dropping one brick at a time but I don't know how much longer I can hold back.
Give up already, you ass! Live it!
Subconscious can be a bitch sometimes, mine surely is.

Sara's (not really) Fabulous System Armageddon, Book I: The World Ended at Rush Hour
Planet Earth, Monday, October 7th, 2019. 18:30 * * On a fateful day, during rush hour in eastern North America, Heavens and Hell crumbled and fell from their higher dimension on Earth. It came from "above" but not the same above we regard in our tridimensional Euclidean reasoning. No, it came from "above" as in from a higher dimension. Bits and pieces of those places fell on Earth from all directions, this time in tridimensional Euclidean space. Satellites, the ISS, and space debris all were wiped clean from orbit. Even those that didn't crash with the falling debris were knocked off orbit by the shockwaves. On the ground, power distribution lines were disrupted and most power facilities were left abandoned by their dead staff. Most of these had emergency shutdown routines that engaged in a few days. Some others had a survivor among their staff that followed protocol and activated their SCRAM switches, stopping the power plant. Long-distance communication disappeared the internet along with it. The world was plunged into technological darkness. Nine hundred and ninety-nine out of every thousand human beings perished immediately in the pulse of magical energy from the torn spatial boundary. Spirits were rent asunder and vanished, their fate neither salvation nor damnation, only oblivion. The criteria used for this culling was latent magic potential. It didn't discriminate against education, gender, age, or ethnic group. But of the around seven million survivors, most would meet their doom moments later. Those on moving vehicles, like the ones driving on highways suddenly had to contend with high-speed uncontrolled cars and trucks driven by corpses. Trapped in their vehicles and helpless, they became part of the long snake of crushed metal. Very few survived. Those in the air or out in the sea were alone and probably unable to control their rides. Airplanes crashed, and ships kept their course or drifted away, depending on their autopilot. Several ended their own lives in utter despair after seeing their loved ones die in front of them. Another large group would die at the hands of other survivors. Violence and aggression became the norm. Only a few sparse pockets of not-so-sane survivors managed to band together and cooperate for the sake of mutual survival. The sole survivor in a five-over-one apartment building in Georgia, a girl became the keystone to humanity's survival. Sara's fabulous System Apocalypse had just started. She has only one remark. It was anything but fabulous. * * Updates every Wednesday and Sunday.
