You stood in the kitchen helping Harriet get ready for dinner. You were putting the salad in a bowl when two hands covered your eyes.
"Guess who?"
"Ricky?" The hands disappeared from over your eyes.
"Wrong." He turned you around and gave you a kiss to your lips.
"You two better get cleaned up. We will have dinner soon." Harriet kindly said. She continued to set dinner out on the table. You turned around and washed your hands in the sink while David wrapped his arms around your waist and rested his head on top of yours.
You grabbed the towel and dried off your hands. David washed his before copying your movement. You sat down at the table beside your boyfriend. He started to grab his dinner while you watched him.
After dinner, you two went out into the backyard and sat against the white picket fence. He wrapped his jacket over your shoulders and held you close.
"See that bright one?" He asked while pointing up at the stars.
"Yes I do."
"That should be our star." He looked down at you. You chuckled and rested your head on his shoulder.
"I'm going to miss this when you go back to school." You sighed, you missed him too much when he was away at school. David was a year older than you so while you were finishing up senior year he was finishing up his first year at college. You saw each other on weekends when David would come home to his family. You two have been dating for a few months, but known each other for a long time. You grew up next door to the Nelsons.
"We've been able to manage and in two months you'll get to go along to school with me. Just like the old days," he reassured you.
"I just can't help but miss you when you're gone."
"The way you're talking makes it sound like we hardly ever see each other," he chuckled, "it'll get easier. Just you wait."
He pressed a kiss to your temple. You two continued to lay out in the backyard and look at the stars until you fell asleep in his arms.

MARY: The Dreadful
[participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] "You have to survive, Adam. You have to win." This is not a story starring Mary, because Mary is already dead. She bled out on her front doorstep following a sudden three-day absence. Seven years have passed, with her little brother—Adam—now standing at eighteen years of age. Following his sister's death, he lived the life of a delinquent, wandering the grimy streets of the city of Steeldale. All it amounted to was years of street fighting experience, no proper home and an uncertain future at a second-rate university. Unbeknowst to him, the day before university, he will be thrust from Steeldale into a brand new world. It is a world where a cherry red sky gazes down upon a fragmented continent, on which civilisations from other worlds have been dumped like refuse. The souls of man leak from their fingertips, coalescencing into superhuman powers and horrible fleshy monstrosities. Tribes of refugees clash against each other, attempting to carve out a place in this unrefined space. With no choice, Adam must traverse this dangerous new world, with Mary's shadow following him every step of the way. This is my entry to the April 2021 Writathon. Chapters will be posted as I write them.
