《Wrecked》The 50

"Dru, Dru I think you need to come over here." Abby, a young girl whose infection I'd spent most the morning treating, pulled at my elbow. Her young eyes shone above the green tone of her skin- her face was hollowed out and I knew that the infection wasn't the only thing wrong with her. She was fighting a bug, a bug that made me keep her alone in the corner with just her mother. I was scared about what a bug could do to a group of people with no proper protection from it. "Dru, Darcy is asleep, she just stopped talking and fell asleep." I chuckled at the thought; Darcy hadn't slept all night because she didn't want to leave my side while I stay guard of everyone.
"Please Dru can you please go see her?" The pleading in her voice was that of a five year olds, telling me she wasn't giving up until I did what she wanted. Penelope nodded at me, Abby's mother was holding back the same bug and although I was treating her wounds I was happy to be done with her, I didn't want to catch the bug.
"Where is she Abs? Around the fire area?" She nodded, sitting down onto her mothers lap. I didn't rush over; I contemplated not going over at all but I could feel the girl eyes burning into my back.
"Hey sleepy head, I told you not to stay up and wait for me last night." I plopped myself down next to her on the sand, I wrapped my arms around where her head was lifting it from the pile of clothes that was her pillow. "Darc, time to get up- lunch time. I know you haven't eaten since we got here." I shook her slightly, her head in my lap showed no signs of stirring. "Come on man, get up." Panic arose within me as I felt something wet on my thighs, lifting her head up I found my jeans covered in blood- her blood.
Not caring about how rough I was my fingers ran threw her rain, trying to find where it was coming from. The back of her head, just above her spine was a shade of red, stain with dry blood and running with fresh blood. How had I not noticed? How had she not said anything? "Darcy wake up, now!!" I was screaming at this point, bringing a crowd over with my desperation.
"Darcy I know you're tired, just please open your eyes." A tear dropped onto her face, only then did I realise my face was drenched with them. "Don't you dare die on me like this."
Pulling her shirt off I found the wound I had dressed last night with a cheap sewing kit. The bandage showed no sign of bleeding, and that cut on the back of her head wasn't enough to kill her she must be losing blood some where else. I noticed a patch on her pants wrapped up with a large t-shirt, the t-shirt was red but seemed to have uneven colouration. Not wasting time I grabbed the knife in my back pocket and sliced open her jeans only to find a wound travelling down half of her thigh. It was to the bone, pieces of metal still wedged inside with puss evident within. How had I missed this? I looked through the pile of clothes she'd been resting on to find that item after item was stained with blood, she'd been trying to fix this her self. And she'd definitely lost more than enough blood.

"Darcy, you idiot why didn't you tell me." Pulling her back into my arms I knew I had to check for something. Placing my two fingers below her jaw I searched for her pulse. Nothing. I searched for it on her wrist, nothing. I even felt over her chest. Nothing.
"No." I screamed. "DARCY WAKE UP!" I held her tighter to my chest, my lips pressed to her forehead as my mind refused to accept the truth.
"No. No. Not you, please not you. You can't die Darcy. I didn't get to say goodbye, or that I loved you. Darcy..." I was a blubbering mess, my words barely legible.
"She knew you loved her." The voice didn't drag my attention, I didn't even look away from my best friends lifeless body. I could feel hands running along my shoulders and down my arms, grabbing onto my elbows and trying to lift me up.
"Stop. Leave us." I all but growled at the voice. "I can't leave her like this, I have to save her." Placing her down I began CPR, frantically pushing at her chest- I didn't care if I broke her ribs I just needed to see her open those eyes.
"Dru, you're scaring everyone." The voice came again, this time further away. I could hear it, the fear in her voice, the fear that I had lost it and that there wasn't going to be any one to take care of them anymore. I didn't care, I continued reaching for the medicine that fights of infect in my back pocket reaching to put some in her wound but an arm caught mine.
"I can't let you do that, don't waste it on her, she's already gone. Someone else is going to need that one day." The angry voice was not the one from before, this one wasn't afraid of me it was almost what my conscious was screaming at me from within. "Everyone please, just leave us for a minute. I'll sort her out."
"I don't need sorting out, I'm not a child. What I do need is to save my friend, I didn't do anything to save her- I could." My voice broke as the next wave of tears broke down my face. "I could have stopped this, She could still be alive. That should be me dead." I hands were shaking over her chest, I couldn't press down any more. She was gone. I could hear her voice in my head. I'm never gone, only out of sight. But she was in sight, and she was still gone. No closure, no good bye- just gone.
"How were you supposed to save her? Unless you've got a whole hospital hiding away that I don't know about. Nothing we have is going to fix a wound like that." He was still stood besides be, but I haven't raised by vision yet. So as I did I was shocked by who was before me.
"What do you want? You couldn't even leave me alone to be with my best friend! What are you?!" I spat at him, furious that this boy even dared to stop me from saving my best friend.
"Look, princess, I couldn't have you wasting resources on a lost cause." He held is hands up in defeat before crossing his arms over his chest. His arrogance shone within his eyes, like he didn't even care that he'd just torn me away from my best friend.

"Well don't expect me to ever use it on you because that would truly be a waste of resources on such a lost cause." I pushed myself off the floor and stood right before him, pressing out chest up together. "Don't you ever get in my way again or I will make sure to get in yours." I threatened. I could tell in that moment he realised how serious I was but he wouldn't back down either.
His breath fanned over my face, it was warm and stuck of whatever canned food he'd just consumer- spaghetti I believe. "I'd like to see you try." He breathed, challenging me.
"I'm going to make you wish you never said that, cause I won't ever back down." I shoved him once more with my chest before I bent back over Darcy's body. I could feel his presence leave as I scanned my eyes over her body. Apart from the wound on her leg she looked like regular Darcy, the smile lines on her face so pronounced because those were used 99% of the time. Her hair the same shade of blonde that I was created with a mix of four packet dies last month, her dainty freckles that id always played join the dot with on her nose and under her eyes. Her plump lips I'd watched her get injections in every 6 weeks for years, she refused to go alone to those appointments. That's when my eyes caught her necklace, the silver charm that held a simple bar at the end of it that we'd both gotten wonderlust engraved on. My fingers reached for my matching one in gold and fiddled with it absent-mindedly. Her last words to me echoing in my head as my other hand caressed the side of her face.
"They are going to need a leader you know." Darcy said out of know where, we'd been sitting in silence until that moment – my eyes searching the faces of all those around us, trying to guess what they were in the real world.
"That doesn't mean it needs to be me." I protested. And it didn't, there was no reason for me to be the one telling everyone what to do, there were people here twice my age.
"I know that your oblivious to it but these people adore you, they respect you already and all you had to do was stand there. They need someone like you who isn't going to back down on her belief, that isn't going to stop fighting for their survival. Because I know you will D, you aren't going to let anything happen to these people." She grabbed my hand that was fidgeting with the stick in my grasp.
" I don't want to be that person, Darc, I cant be that person when I know that I'm the reason they are like this. I'm, the reason the people they love are dead! I just need them to survive because no more lives deserve to be lost!"
" I love you D, because you care so much about the lives of others. This is not your fault, we could never have known they were going to do something like this. Stop blaming yourself and start redeeming yourself- okay? Give them someone to respect, look up to and listen to. You can do this D, you can protect them all."
At that time Ari had awoken, a small boy travelling with his parents. He was one of the lucky ones- they'd all survived. All five of them, his sister was close but I'd managed to stop the bleeding before she could lose any more blood. I'd saved her. A small voice in the back of my head said id saved a lot more people too. But I pushed that voice aside knowing the 167 people that I hadn't been able to save.
"Dru." A voice whispered, cautious as if not to disturb me. I turned around slowly, not wanted to let Darcy out of my sight. It was Caila and the boy that had helped me with the Indian sister yesterday. "Dru, I know that this can't be easy but we need you. Everyone needs you, we need to know what to do." She was so quiet I could see she was scared of causing the same reaction I had before. This time the boy spoke up.
"We can take care of Darcy for you, we've got a spoke we've been putting the bodies when can find." He fidgeted with his glasses as he spoke, you could tell he wasn't a confident person but the amount of space he had put between himself and Caila.
"Take me there." I wanted to see the bodies, see where I would be taking Darcy before I took her there.
Standing over the beach front right next to where the plane had crashed my stomach got caught up in my throat. There wasn't many bodies, and those that were there were un recognisable as humans.
"They need to be buried, and we need to make them tombstones. We're on a island so there should be plenty of wood." I stated before I immediately began to dig a hole destined for my best friend. I think they got the message as I heard them shout out a bunch of instructions to the people around us. Everyone kicked into gear and I could see them copying my actions.
Who knows how long it took us but before I knew it my forehead was beaded with sweat and I was watching as they lowered Darcy into the whole I'd created. They had covered her in a white blanket but left a bit open ready for me to say good bye.
Kneeling down besides her I kissed her forehead, a tear falling onto her cheek. "I'll do it for you Darcy. I love you more than anything, heaven has picked the most beautiful flower today."
Remembering her favourite quote; why do the good die young?
If you were in a garden which flowers would you pick?
The prettiest ones.
Exactly.
She used to joke about this when her favourite characters on Tv died, today was no joke though- it was true. My other half was gone and as I watched them cover her face up and begin cover the sand over I couldn't even bring myself to cry.
I was numb.
"I'll protect them Darcy, I promise." I whispered before turning my back and heading back to the other 49 survivors.

The Shadow Paradigm - Book 1: Project Orb Weaver
Gardening, cooking, innovation, preservation, charity events... Madzistrale, Tom and Gabzryel does it all. But when they encounter the mysterious Shiakar Paradigm Society, a clash of paradigms ensues. Although both groups are aiming to make humanity stand stronger, their ideals and methods could not be further apart. Between the trio's optimistic yet naive ideals, and the SPS's tried-and-true surgical methods, determining the answer which methods can better humanity is a struggle that both parties must resolve in their own ways... Welcome to the 7th revision of my 10+ years ongoing novel trilogy. This revision took out some flawed plot concepts to re-introduce a more down-to-earth, film noir-like ambience, where a battle of wits is what will determine the outcome. It also added instead more in-depth expansion into the lives and mindsets of the characters, especially the heroes (a missing factor in older versions). Third-view limited storytelling was also introduced more prominently over my favoured third-view omnipotent, with each chapters concentrating as much as possible on a single character's point of view instead of head-hopping. So I shall begin uploading the chapters as I finish them; they're edited as much as I can, but there'll most likely be some typos and mistakes. As always, I welcome your comments and critiques, and I hope you enjoy reading that story as much as I did creating it! A parting poem to introduce the story (translated from its original French version): Credit: Les Mots, Mylene Farmer & Seal Firmly, the sky writhes When a mouth begets a death There, I will give my life to hear you To tell you the most tender words When all becomes all alone I'll break my life for a song And to lives that stoop to notice mine I know I will say goodbye But a fraction of this life I would give anything, anytime The universe has its mysteries Words are our lives You could kill a life with words Soul, how would it feel? If our lives are so fragile Words are mysteries Words of feelings Words of love, a temple If one swept the world away One could touch the universe I will tell you how the sun rose high We could with a word become one And for all those words that hurts us There are those that touches us Which illuminates, touches the infinity Even if nothingness exists For a fraction on this life We will give anything, anytime The universe has its mysteries Words are our lives We could kill a life with words Soul, how would it feel? If our lives are so fragile Words are mysteries Words of feelings Words of love, a temple
