《Evolve》8 - A Prank a Day
Advertisement
My day begins as normally as any other. I wake up early, and sneak out so my roommates don't wake up, and get changed in the bathroom where I'm also able to clean up. I run back to my room for my bag, money, and my skateboard before I leave the dorms to enjoy the morning sun.
I notice that something is wrong quickly, even though I'm not sure what it is. I feel like there's a shadow or something over my shoulder, and when I move to look at it, I feel something brush against my hair. I jump, and spin around to see whatever bug has decided to mess with me, when I realise that it's not a bug at all.
"What?" I exclaim, following the dangling toilet paper with my eyes until I see the whole dorm is coated with it. Someone has TP'd the girls' dorm and one strand had been thrown so loosely that it reached down enough to touch my head. "Who would do this?" I ask out loud, wondering who did it so early, too.
I debate going inside, but I decide that I don't actually care, and that the harmless prank isn't worth waking anybody up. I go to meet Logan, as planned, and find him laughing as I get off my board. "So..."
"What?" I ask, confused. "Why are you laughing?" I look subtly at my skateboard, wondering if I was skating weird, but also sure that I wasn't.
"How was your dorm?" He asks, and I finally get it.
"You did it," I sigh. "Why?" He laughs.
"Because it's prank week!" He sees that I have no idea what he's talking about, "prank week is a tradition, it's just a fun time to prank new students, don't worry about it!"
I groan. "Well, if you prank me while I'm trying to enjoy this peaceful morning, you'll find yourself in the fountain," I warn, gesturing to the fountain.
"Fine, fine," he smirks, and we set off together.
When more people begin emerging from their dorms, we go to breakfast, and then our lessons for the day, agreeing to meet back up at lunch. I regret this agreement when I find him with Chase and Michael, who are giggling like toddlers who just had their noses 'stolen'.
"What's up," Chase laughs, gasping for air, "Harper!" I roll my eyes at him and grab my lunch tray.
"Yeah, very funny," I say. It's not that I mind the prank, but it's not exactly funny, I mean there's better pranks in the world than badly decorating someone's house.
"Aw, Harper, we're sorry," Michael says, "we'll make it up to you, after prank week," he tells me. I smile at him.
"Why wait?" I ask, picking the dessert from his tray. "Thanks, buddy." He groans and we go to sit at a table with the girls.
I hear a little bit of their conversation, and they're talking about Abraham Lincoln getting shot. I'm very concerned.
"Hey, guys," I say, sitting down and beginning got eat my lunch.
"What goes on?" Chase asks, while the boys follow me and sit themselves the table.
"Hey," Logan says.
"What's up?" Michael asks.
The girls all greet them back, and it's not long before Logan turns the conversation around, "so I hear you girls woke up to a little surprise this morning."
"Yeah, someone TP'd our whole dorm," Nicole says, and I roll my eyes at the guys pretending to be sympathetic.

"We saw," Chase tells them.
"Yeah, somebody got you guys good," Michael says, and I make a show of moving the cake I stole off him, to remind him that he shouldn't be so smug.
"We're gonna find out who," Dana says, and I grin. I'm in to whatever scheme she plans to get the guys back with.
"I already have some theories," Zoey tells them, "I was thinking it was either the football team, or maybe-"
"It was us," Logan says, casually.
"I bet it was hippies!" Nicole says, as they all ignore the guys' confession.
Michael tries again, "we did it!"
"I hear hippies live by the beach, so maybe they snuck on campus last night and-"
"Wait a second," Zoey says. "Did you guys just say you did it?"
"Yes, they did indeed," I say, pretending to be some royal squire.
"Yeah," Logan agrees.
"We did it!"
"Surprise," Chase says, waving his hands. Zoey angrily throws some grapes at him. "Hey, don't be throwin' grapes!"
"Why'd you guys TP our dorm?" Nicole asks.
"Yeah, it's apparently a 'prank week' thing," I say, rolling my eyes again, and using air quotations around 'prank week'.
"Yeah," Chase agrees, pointing at me.
"Prank week!" Michael says, happily.
"Okay," Zoey says, confused, like I was. "What is prank week?"
"Man, don't girls know anything?" Logan asks, and I pelt him with my own grapes, "sorry, sorry," he whimpers, and grins at me.
"I know how to make you cry," Dana tells him, and I smirk.
"What are you gonna do?" He asks, "kiss me?"
"You wish!"
He laughs, "yeah I do!"
"Alright!" Zoey says, stopping the weird argument. "Will somebody tell me what prank week is, right now?"
"Okay, look, it's this tradition we have here at PCA," Chase explains. "And it happens one week, every year."
"This week," Michael clarifies.
"Yeah, see, the returning students."
"That'd be us," Logan says.
"Play pranks on all the new students!"
"That'd be you!"
"It's sort of like your intitation, into PCA," Michael explains to us, and for the first time I'm not hating prank week. We're officially becoming a part of the school.
"So how would we know what prank week is if it's a PCA tradition and we're new students?" I ask, poking Logan's shoulder. He frowns, and I smirk, "and you say girls are stupid."
"Shut up, Harp," he tells me. "It's fun!"
"For us," Michael corrects.
"Yeah, not for you," Chase says.
Nicole isn't convinced, "are you sure this isn't just some excuse for the guys to pick on the girls?" It's a valid point.
"No, we do this every year," Michael says.
"Yeah, it just so happens that this is the first year that girls are allowed into the PCA," Chase adds.
"Which makes you guys prime targets," Logan says.
"Okay, and what do we do?" Zoey asks them.
"Nothing," Logan shuts her down.
"Except, you know, get pranked," Chase says, more gently.
"And we're just supposed to take it?" Dana asks, and I'm also a little annoyed at the thought of being made to be a victim for a full week, with no way of retaliating.
"Hey, they're catchin' on!"
"Logan, you're so lucky we're not the ones doing prank week," I tell him, knowing how annoyed he's making Dana.

"Okay, well, I think prank week is idiotic," Zoey tells us, and goes back to eating her lunch.
Michael is offended, "hey, we had to do it our first year."
"Yeah, and the pranks were pretty harsh," Chase remembers, as the others join him in reliving their own prank week.
"Well, we're not gonna be such easy targets," Dana asserts, and I nod.
"Yeah, now that we know about prank week, we're gonna be on guard," Zoey tells them.
"And, since you're so stupid, it shouldn't be too difficult to avoid your pranks," I tell Logan.
"Avoid this," he says, wiping sauce on my cheek. He laughs and I bite my lip to stop myself from joining in, instead wiping it off with a napkin.
"Uh, hey, Nicole," Michael says. "Could you toss this in that trash can behind you?" Michael asks. I silently ask if she'll take my sauce napkin too, and she is pleased to help us out.
Nicole walks over to the trash, and goes to toss the garbage into it, when a kid jumps out at her and she runs away screaming. The boys laugh, and I find it a little funny, but feel bad for the gullible brunette.
"You got to love prank week," Logan says.
"Totally man," Michael says, and they high five each other while the girls begin brooding.
We go away, and decide to plan our own prank, which has a lot riding on it. Our prank has to convey our creativity, our willingness to get involved, and also show that we're so much better at it than the boys.
"Wait, wait," Quinn says, and I prepare myself to call the police if she suggests murder, or another form of violence, for our prank. "I have the perfect prank!"
"We're not removing anyone's kidneys," Nicole tells her, and I furrow my brow.
"Huh?" I ask, and the other girls just shake their heads at me, and I know to drop it.
"No, no. Okay, we wait til it's dark," she begins.
All of the girls in the room are intrigued by her seemingly innocent plan. "Yeah?"
Then, we sneak up to one of the boys' dorms..."
"Okay," Vicky says.
Nicole is already sold, "loving this."
"Then, we set off a sonic high-frequency device, and render all the boys unconscious!" We stare at her in silence, disappointed in her prank and also in ourselves for listening.
"Quinn, there's no 'sonic device' that renders people unconscious," Nicole tells her.
"Oh, really?" She asks.
"Would that even be a prank?" I wonder, aloud. "I mean they wouldn't notice, if we did it at night, when they would already be sleeping."
Quinn is not fazed, "just wait." She leaves the room, attempting a hair flip, and leaving us stunned.
"Zoey, how come you're not saying anything?" Nicole asks her. "You always say things."
"I don't know, I just don't think we should sink to their level," the blonde says.
"We wouldn't be," I reassure her. "Our prank will be much better, I promise."
"That's not what I meant, Harper," she says, softly.
"What do you mean?" Dana asks.
"Well, I mean, we'll prank them, they'll prank us back, what's the point?"
"So we should just sit around and be victims?" Nicole asks, and I point at her.
"I mean, come on, aren't you the same girl who challenged Logan to a basketball match, with only two good players?" I ask her.
"I think we should talk to some of the guys," she says, reasonably, "and tell 'em we don't want to be a part of prank week."
"But it's a PCA tradition," Vicky says.
"Yeah, and it's used to be a tradition that girls weren't even allowed here, but we changed that!"
"I think that was more of an administrative rule," I mumble, but all the other girls agree, so I nod enthusiastically.
"Ah, help me!" We hear a boy shouting, from outside our dorm. The girls all fish out to see what's happening, but I hang back. It's prank week, after all.
I watch from the doorway as the boys begin throwing water balloons at the huddle of girls who are so nicely displayed for them. The girls are screaming and I wince as I hear the balloons breaking.
"Alright, they've had enough," Chase tells the guys, who stop their assault.
"Cease fire!" Michael laughs.
"You're all dead!" Dana shouts at them and I go over to her, pulling the tissue packet out of my bag and offering them to her.
"It's okay, Dana," Zoey says, calmly. "It's just water balloons. It's no big deal."
"Incoming!" I hear Logan shout, and look up to see him throwing a huge balloon from the roof. I promptly jump to the side, and watch as it lands solely on Zoey, the water soaking her completely.
"Alright," she says. "This means war."
"Ha ha! Yes!" I shout.
We work on our prank and the other girls get cleaned up and I go fresh clothes. We paint black war paint under our eyes, and wear camouflage clothing, with me wearing a pair of camo shorts, a white shirt, and a camo baseball cap. I get called Cadet Kelly, when I walk into the lounge, until the other people who dressed up arrive and I'm able to tell Carrie to shove it.
"Okay, everyone knows the plan, right?" Zoey asks, and we all mumble affirmatives. "Okay, now, let's make sure we've got everything."
"I got the dress," Vicky says, holding it up.
"Good."
"I got the paint," Dana shows off her paint.
"I got the bra," Nicole says, and we all look at the large bra in confusion.
"Where'd you get that?" Zoey asks, laughing slightly.
"I got it out of the dryer when Coco was doing her laundry," Nicole explains.
"You stole our dorm adviser's bra?" Dana asks her.
"Where else was I supposed to get one this big?"
"She has a point," I say, and look at my own small chest, knowing none of us would have anything suitable.
Quinn runs in, excited and holding a strange sphere, "I did it!"
"What'd you do?" Zoey asks.
"I built this; it's a sonic neural neutraliser!"
"We don't speak geek," Dana says.
"It's obviously her device to knock the guys unconscious," I say, and Quinn nods.
"I just push this button and it emits a high-frequency sound that interferes with human brainwaves, causing anyone within 100 yards to lose consciousness," she explains, grinning. "Shall we try it on the boys?"
"Quinn, it's not gonna work," Nicole tells her.
"Then you force me to demonstrate," she says, "prepare to be knocked out." She presses the button and an awful, loud ringing sound comes out of the device. We cover our ears, but remain awake.
"Quinn, turn that off!" Zoey yells at her.
"Before it kills us," I add, the noise threatening me with a huge headache.
When her glasses break, Quinn turns the noise off and we're able to take our hands off our ears. "We should all be unconscious," she says. "Do you feel dizzy? Confused? Woozy?"
"No?" Nicole says.
"Just annoyed," Zoey tells the scientist.
"Wait," I say, "if you had to turn it off, what would have happened if it did work?"
The science geek stares at us all, and then pretends to occupy herself with the device, "it must need adjustments."
"So must your head," Dana quips.
Quinn leaves, looking over her orb and I turn myself back to Zoey.
"Alright, let's go get this done!"
We all clap and say, "break!" We ne him heading to the boys' dorm, when Coco stops us.
"Where're you going?"
"Oh, hi, Coco," Nicole awkwardly says.
"Uh, we were just getting ready to study together," Zoey tells her, not very smoothly.
"Yeah," we agree, "studying!"
"Dressed in camouflage?"
"Well, if we can't see each other we won't distract each other, eh?" I joke, my smile failing when the other girls send me weird looks.
"It's a new fashion thing," Nicole covers, pushing me behind her so I won't say anything else.
"Yeah," Zoey agrees, "camouflage is the new black!"
"Yeah," we all agree, and Coco either doesn't care or actually buys it.
"I see, alright. I'm gonna go watch Leno," she says, as we pass her. "Oh, wait, have any of you seen a large bra? About, yea big?" She asks, gesturing to her boobs.
"No," we chorus, denying any knowledge of her missing bra, which Nicole expertly hides. We all run away as she turns around, and only return when our prank is finished.

Shadowrun: Blake Island School of Magic
It's a high tech, low life. It's the Seattle Metroplex in 2074. It rises like a steel and concrete cancer out of the earth. Poverty is rampant, corruption is everywhere, crime is out of control, corporations basically control everything, the old United States is fractured, magic has come back and now it turns out that humanity has been joined by elves, dwarves, orks and trolls. The old world ended but the rent is still due. Life goes on. You'd be surprised what people can adapt to, especially if they don't have a choice. One of the places where life goes on is just west of Seattle. Surrounded by the waters of the Puget Sound is an island. On that island is the Blake Island School of Magic. A decade ago it was known for producing some of the most talented awakened in the world. That reputation was hijacked by the wealthy corporate elite who now park their teenage children there. And since it's a boarding school, their parents mostly forget about them. Three young people, who are certainly not wealthy or elite, are chosen this year to attend this school of magic in hopes of revitalizing their reputation for talent. One from the ash drifts of the Puyallup Barrens, one from the most densely populated slum hive in the world and one from prison. This is their story. -- This story is set in the Shadowrun universe. If you're not familiar with Shadowrun, it mostly tells the stories of deniable mercenaries called shadowrunners in a cyberpunk dystopia. Instead of telling another story solely about shadowrunners, this story will tell the tale of young people navigating a world that is indifferent to them at best and actively hostile at worst. Shadowrunners will be in the story and we'll see them operate, but they won't be its main focus. This story originally began in 2017 as a passion project and continues to this day on the Somethingawful.com forums. The unedited version is over a million words strong. There are currently seven books in this series and I am currently in the process of editing them.
